Your notebook shouldn't be getting so hot. I run FAH 24/7 and my temps max at about 65 degrees.

Agreed... those temps are way above the norm. Call Asus to get an RMA.

The BSOD problem is back...E.B.E or AlexF can you advise me on exactly what drivers and utilities I should reinstall and in what order....Sorry to trouble you guys. I'm not sure but I think the problem started after I installed Kaspersky Internet Security 8 and everything seemed to work fine fine for a week and again not sure but I ran TuneUp Utilities and had it remove temp files and clean up my registery and soon after that the problem reappeared. This is the code I got last time...not exactly the same as before.

    Problem signature:
    Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
    OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.256.6
    Locale ID: 1039

    Additional information about the problem:
    BCCode: a
    BCP1: 00000000

800mhz ram will work in the notebook, but it will only run at 667mhz. You could overclock the ram via SetFSB (it will automatically overclock your CPU and Ram) ;)

    elvenone,

You can put 800mhz memory into the V1S but it will run at 667mhz. I purchased 4GB of 800mhz last year for mine just in case I upgraded to another notebook that could benefit from the additional speed.

Is there going to be a refresh on the v1 notebooks with the montevina chips?

Probably not anytime soon. It seems like Asus is focusing on the consumer notebooks more than the business models. :(

I don't remember the earlier problem, but if re-installing WiFi and ATK solved it, you could try that again.

Also, if Kaspersky and TuneUp seem to cause problems (I especially suspect TuneUp, might have removed something from the registry), perhaps it's also a good idea to make a clean install, and NOT install these two applications. You could use AVG instead of Kaspersky, and (if you're using XP) jv16powertools. I've never had any problems with either of these apps. JV16 is a software to clean up the registry, and whenever it says something is safe to remove, it really is safe to remove.

I don't know those codes. Note that if you get several BSODs with different codes it can also be RAM. Try Memtest86+ to eliminate that.

hi, as you know, i had problems with hot temperatures, so i send my V1S to service using global warranty (my notebook was bought by 1toppc.com in USA, iam in European Union)

the results are drastic!...like now its very good, cause the temperature jumps from +20C and than back -25C in just seconds...before the service, the temperature was lowing and raising very slow, like it taken 5 minutes to get to +20C temperature, and the cooler had to be always on...

now they replaced the entire cooling, and it runs 90% less than the old cooling, and is about 1/3 quiter, the temperatures are much much better

after the service, i had problems, while my notebook was suddenly shutting down...just so... it happended after fresh install of vista, also after driver installed...i thought i send it back...but as the time passsed, the shutdowns were more and more rare, and now i had none...somewhere i heared its connected to prefetch and intel memory ribon

I want a V1Sn. But I'm not sure about getting one-- my husband who is a computer pro so I do respect his opinion things I would be better off with the Dell Precision M4300 due to known excellence of build quality and availability of parts.

But the V1Sn has all the features I want and its prettier. So let me ask: Is it difficult to get parts in north america? How does the notebook hold up overtime? I've read some posts with concerns about heating-- my orignal notebook 7 years ago, an HP had big problems with the heat sink and I do not want to go through heating issues again.

Convince me of the glories of the V1?

I'm not sure whether I should recommend the V1Sn. There have been some complaints about its build quality; although other people have been quite satisfied with it.

Another thing is that there are some battery issues. They seem to be mostly solved by know, though. The problems manifest themselves by the battery wear increasing abnormally fast. On the V1S with latest battery series though, it seems that the wear "resets" to 0 from time to time.

Finally, the V1S is already no longer latest generation. The new Montevina laptops are out, the M50 perhaps the closest thing to the V1S. I don't know if the V1 will get refreshed for Montevina, a reseller will know that, perhaps along with a time frame for the refresh, as well.

Now, to the questions. I don't know how the V1S does with heat. About holding up over time, I haven't seen a significant amount of complaints about V1 notebooks breaking down, and the "J" model is almost 2years old by know. The lack of reports indicates that it's holding up well -- although it's by no means direct proof.

As to getting parts, it's not difficult. First of all you are covered by 2year warranty, with overnight shipping. So if it goes bad, in NA it's usually fixed within a couple of days. Second of all, when the warranty runs out, you can buy parts off the ASUS eStore, and they are relatively cheap. So no worries there.

I would suggest you look at the M50 as an up to date alternative. Maybe you'll like it more than the V1. On the other hand, the notebook is too new to determine its build quality and how long it's likely to last -- it's a "dark horse" from that respect. :)

    Hope this info helps.

thanks. I looked at the M, but they don't have quite the right specs for me-- the docking station is a big draw for me. I'll get the practical (yet not terribly exciting) Dell and add stuff.

Being a owner of v1sn for 2 months time, i would say it's a good machine. I use it for heavy scientific calculation and gaming, everything goes fine. It stays quiet, cool and lightning fast. The 9500 GS (OC'd) runs Crysis at average 18fps with everything high except shadow and shading medium at 1280x800, the laptop is only luke warm (my colleague's MBP almost boiled an egg when running crysis).

The built quality is alright, although the lid has a little bit flex. My unit got a samsung screen, it's a bit grainy but the color is still nice if you fine tune it using the Nvidia control panel. Love the esata port and the HDMI outputs (this was the only business machine which has these two ports 2 months ago). But i would recommend HP dv5t now, it got nice screen, better graphic card, similar weight and spec to v1sn, decent outlook and a cheaper price.

Has anyone replaced their main battery in their V1S? I've begun having problems with mine (which is a replacement from Asus) over the last several weeks, but I'm outside of my 1 year warranty, so I am looking for a replacement. These aren't exactly easy to find. Most dealers are sold out.

I've found some at different sites, but they have a different part number than my current battery (70-NGF1B1000M; label also has a V1JL821 indicator). Newer batteries are using a 90-NGF1B110 part number.

To make things even more interesting, all of the replacements are listed as 4400mAh, while the label on my current battery (along with all of the warnings, etc) states 5200mAh.

Strangely enough, I've noticed that the part number for my modular battery is different, as well (70-NGF1B2000M on mine vs 90-NGI5B2100T on the ExcaliberPC.com site).

Maybe Asus finally got around to fixing the initial battery problems and making batteries that are specifically for this model, and not the V1J.

Yes, I think that is actually the case (without being sure or remembering all the details, the discussion was around half a year ago).

Here is the battery with the 70-... serial number: http://estore.asus.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=4176

But if I were you, I'd try the one with the 90-.... part number.

You should also dig up the old threads about the V1S battery problems, I think people mentioned some serial numbers there as well.

    Hi All

    I recently purchased V1S (AK015E):
    Asus V1S
Intel Centrino Pro 2.2 Ghz (T7500)
    2 GB RAM
    1 GB Intel Memory Turbo
    GeForce 8600m GT - 512MB Screen 1650 x 1050
    200MB 4200rpm (Hitachi MK2035GSS

I wish to upgrade the hard drive for maximum storage and speed?
Can anyone advise what is the maximum size (GB) that this laptop will cope with.

I have been told that it will only support a max. of 200GB at 7200RPM.

Can anyone confirm or dispute this?

I want to install a 320gb 7200rpm drive such as - Momentus 7200.3 SATA 3Gb/s 320-GB Hard Drive or similar.

Has anyone gone beyond the 200GB for this laptop?

    Many Thanks
    H.

As long as the interface of the hard drive SATA and has a form of 2.5", then it should work on the V1S. At the moment, the largest hard drive for a laptop available on the market would be a 500gb 5400rpm drive.

Yes I agree emporiumboutique, it should work.

But has anyone actually installed and have a fully functional hard drive greater than 200GB.

According Asus technical support 200GB is the maximum capacity :(

I do not expect problems with large drives. I am running a 250GB on my 2+ year old computer.

The reason they list 200GB is because they only tested with 200GB at the time of the release; there were no bigger HDDs to test with, at that time.

    E.B.E - but you haven't tried anything >200GB on a laptop?

Everything points to > 200GB hard drive working, I was hoping someone could give proven confirmation that they have installed a high capacity drive (>200GB) on a V1S without any problems.

    I don't want to be stuck with a 320GB drive that I can't use.

Anyone else tried running the Windows 7 Beta on their V1S? I've got it loaded and all devices installed (except for the Intel Turbo Cache and Management drivers).

Everything is working great except shutting down takes forever, if it works at all. Just curious if anyone has tried it and is having similar issues.

(and yes, I still love this laptop!)

DTrump, I'll be doing this at some point for a dual-boot so I'd be interested in hearing about your progress. I've been playing with W7 in Hyper-V so I can get used to it before trying it out on my system. Are you running the 32 or 64 bit version?

Now, for any V1S owners who believe their fan is running more loudly and/or frequently, I'd recommend sending it into Asus service. I had to take advantage of my ADW service because of a damaged LCD and I also mentioned that the CPU fan had been running more frequently and quite a bit louder compared to when I purchased the unit. The difference with the fixed system is very noticeable. The fan is so much quieter and from CoreTemp I'd say its running on average about 8 degrees celsius cooler!

    Hi
Can someone please explain why 800MHz(effective) RAM will run at only 667MHz(effectively)?
(Why can't FSB :DRAM ratio be changed to 3:6 - see below for current setting)

From CPUZ I have the following info:
    Bus Speed 200MHz
    Rated FSB 800MHz

    MEMORY 333MHz
    FSB :DRAM 3:5

Now I understand the FSB :DRAM ratio is 3:5, which gives us 200Mhz:333MHz.
Memory is DDR so effective rate = 333Mhz x 2 = 667Mhz - which is the current rated memory in the system.

This is clear to me, BUT why can't the 333MHz memory be replaced with 400Mhz memory.

    This would then give effective rate of 400MHz * 2 = 800Mhz!!

What is the limitation on the system if any?

Please help me to understand :)

    Thanks all.

HevJ, this is a limitation of the "Santa Rosa" chipset as it doesn't support this speed. Therefore, it downclocks the 800Mhz bus to 667Mhz.

hi guys, just a few questions from me about my V1S...

    1. Are there any problems running Vista 64-bit? Are all the drivers supported?

    2. Are there any problems running on 4GB RAM other than 0.5 of it may be useless? I have heard issues about crashing on 3-4GB (that's why I'm still on 2GB)

    3. The paint on my palmrest is fading away and now there is a dark patch on either side of my palmrest. Would the 2 year international warranty cover it or do I have to pay for a new casing/palmrest?

    4. I have a feeling that my laptop temps are on the high side. May I know what's an acceptable range of temps and what program do u use to measure them?

Edit: I have just checked my temps with Speedfan. (I'm just doing some light surfing.)
    GPU: 66C, Core 0: 60C, Core 1: 59C

    thanks in advance! :)

    1) You shouldn't have any problems with the 64 bit Operating Systems. I've been running Server 2008 x64 for a year now (similar driver codebase as Vista SP1) and it's been great. Also, you'll see others in this thread running Vista x64. Besides the official Asus V1S driver page, you can find additional x64 drivers in this thread - http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=100357.

    2. I'm running with 4GB and all this memory is accessible. The OS and chipset control how much of the memory you see and you'll see all 4GB if you're planning for Vista x64.

    3. Not too sure but I'd imagine you would be responsible for this. Doesn't hurt to contact them though.

    4. Too hard to gauge acceptable as different people run different power profiles, OS's and applications. I can say that the V1S fan is tied to the CPU temp and it reaches it's loudest as it approaches 70 degrees celsius. I run the Balanced Power Plan and average in the high 50's but this is only after the changes made by Asus support (see previous post). Prior to this, I was probably averaging in the mid 60's. Finally, I use CoreTemp and always have this running in the taskbar so I can see how the system is reacting to the workload.

    3. I would also suggest you try contacting them. After all, it's nominally a business laptop so you would expect the paint to be more durable.

    4. You should clean up the fan and the heat radiator if you didn't do it in a while (or maybe at all). There is a generic guide linked in the Info Booth (may be slightly different for your model). Otherwise, use Chaz' cooling guide. Compressed air doesn't help much after a while, though, and direct access is required for a thorough cleaning.

Hey, I was wondering what you guys are getting as temps (CPU and GPU please)? I always feel like my V1S is so hot...and the fan is ALWAYS on. I don't know if this is normal or not =\
I just got Rivatunre (never used it before) and it's saying my GPU is 65-70 (Celsius) when I'm just surfing the internet and typing. The fan is currently on and rather loud...
As for my CPU I also just got NHC and it says it's around 62 degrees (Celsius). I really don't know if that's that hot or not. Could you guys let me know if I'm just over reacting? This fan always being on is really annoying though!!
    Thanks!

ok so a few days ago, i noticed IE locking up after about 15 minutes after booting, and it started just ie, but now the machine completly locks, so checked for spyware and nothing really there, cept a few cookies.

cleared them checked out hijackthis and the whole 9...

well the last 2-3 days the locks are more frequent and i have to force a reboot, and its doing it everytime now..

i did a clean install with all the drivers for vista 64 and x86 tried both versions, and im still getting lock ups on the clean installs..

it runs hot so im thinkn my cpu may have overheated and it could be ruined..any ideas, ive contacted asus support but they havent gotten back yet..

    i have a stock v1s-b1 with the 2.2 core 2duo not the 2.4

Have you read the post above yours? :) This could be caused by dust accumulation in between the fan and the heat radiator. Please try to clean that and see how it affects your temps.

Perhaps this is caused by overheating. Monitor your temps. See above advice for cleaning, if your computer is overheating.

If the CPU and GPU are not overheating, some other components may be going bad (e.g., motherboard or RAM). You can do some checks: HDD, RAM, etc. See my Tips and Tricks, the relevant questions (HDD, RAM).

Oh heh sorry I guess I didn't think of that. How often should I be cleaning the fan? And how//what tools would I need to do so? I saw you mentioned an "info booth" but I don't know what that is. Could you post the link to it? Thanks a lot for the help!

The link is in my signature. Bold so it's easy to spot :D

How often, I would say once every 6 months, more often if you're in a dusty environment. And whenever the computer is overheating. :)

Oh my I'm so dumb! Thanks, I'll have to wait until winter break to do this though, I'll be sure to post the results :D
And my CPU is at 70-80 and the GPU is at arounf 70 nowadays (back in my dorm room with heat). Those other numbers were from my house and my parents don't put on heat so the room was like 45 degrees to begin with. >.<

I am not sure I understand those numbers. Are you mixing Celsius with Fahrenheit perhaps?

(BTW, if the computer is overheating, I would suggest cleaning sooner rather than later...)

    Hi,

Just to update you guys on my situation, I have brought my notebook in to repair the palmrest. As expected, I had to pay for it because it's not covered under the 2 year warranty. It's about USD90 if anyone's interested.

As for the RAM upgrade and 64bit OS installation, everything went smoothly.

However, the RAM slot is rather difficult to access because the CPU cover has to be opened first. Therefore, I decided to get the ASUS ppl to do it instead of running the risk of snapping the cover. The upgrade was free of charge. You just have to provide the RAM.

Most of the drivers for 64bit OS can also be found on the ASUS support website. There are 1 or 2 which I did not manage to find but you can install them from your drivers disc.

Finally, for my temperature issue, since my notebook's already in for repair, I asked them to clean the fan and internals for me as well! =D It is now running at 3-4 degrees Celsius lower than before...I might consider buying a notebook cooler as well. Any suggestions? I read that Zalman's a good brand...

Thanks for all your help guys!

If you get a notebook cooler get one that blows air toward the notebook.

They don't always provide a significant temp drop, though...

    Fellow owner's..
What's up with the poor vista x64 driver support from asus download site?
Can't find any chipset, LAN and other crucial ones, so I ask, you're supposed to fill these in with the x86 drivers? What will be the response of this?
[[Edit: Found some thanks to this forum]]

Secondly, it's time to change my stocked HDD. 4200rpm toshiba goes bye-bye.
    Any recommendations on this?
    I thought of a WD Scorpio Black Edition 320GB, 7200RPM (2,5", 16MB Cache, 3 Gb/s) As this works great in my friend's Playstation3 :D

    Suggestions and answers appreciated.

i have up on the 4 gigs, figured i would just go back to the x86 and be fine with the 32 bit os and 2 gigs of ram...

x64 really isnt worth the install for me, only 2 apps i use are 64bit so ef it...

the driver support sucked and my dvd burning in x64 was SLOOOOW

i figured id wait for windows 7 befor i try x64 again, its just not ready for primetime imho...

If you read through the thread you will see many references to those running an x64 OS on this notebook. Personally, I've been running the Windows Server 2008 x64 (same codebase to Vista) for over a year and it has worked perfectly. I recently tried Windows 7 and you will defnitely be happy when it's released as it natively supports more devices after the initial install which means less time hunting for drivers.
