Okay so it looks like the battery issue is rearing its head. In my case, I shut down the computer after about an hour on the first power up. The battery was charging, but when I shut down, the battery charge light turned off, and it's no longer charging. It's supposed to charge faster when the computer is off, and I didn't see any warning to leave the computer on until the battery is finished charging....
I guess I will try turning it on on battery power until it powers down, then open it in bios, etc as suggested before. Can I just say how much this spoils the party of getting a new laptop?

Well I figured out the fingerprint sign on thru single sign on and it is quite a cumbersome program, I was hoping I could just go to a website or open a program and swipe my fingerprint instead of clicking on the icon then swiping, I wish there was something like Keepass for fingerprints.
-
-
likewise, you might have configured it wrong in the settings.
-
I figured it out. I want to swipe before it fills in my information. Before I had to click on the icon in the top right of the window for the fingerprint scan window to come up. I found some settings and now when I load up a password protected website or application a window pops up automatically asking me to swipe my fingerprint. Thanks for the info though.
-
Alright now I am just being annoying. I have another question. Are the passwords that SOS is keeping track of being saved to a file somewhere that I can backup? To use after a reformat or crash whatever the case may be? Thanks in advance.

After getting my laptop it would never shutdown whether I be plugged in or running off the battery. Every thing would seem to shut off except the lights and the fan. I notice a lot of people seem to be having the same problem. I found a solution that worked for me as strange as it may seem. I have shutdown my computer over 20 times plugged in and out and have never had the same problem. When I booted up during the post somewhere it starts talking about Intel ME at this point I just hit *enter*. I get a quick little message I can not remember what, but it worked so maybe someone else will find this useful. Unfortunately it did not fix my modular battery problem. It just will not switch over to other battery. hmmm...

Asus has released BIOS 209 with updated thermal policy.
Has anybody tried it? -
I'd be interested in using it to see if it'd have any effect on changing my battery problem, but it doesn't seem to be available for download just yet.
-
Kettle do you mean 208? Its been out for some time now, Couldnt find 209 on the website.
-
Matt, I see a 209 bios but when I try and download it i receive a 404 error.
-
No, I mean what I say - 209:
http://dlsvr02.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/V1S/V1S209AS.zipand http://dlsvr04.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/V1S/V1S209AS.zip but somehow I couldn't see this update in Opera, seems strange... -
strange, when I go to the V1s download page 209 dosent appear under bios.
-
My guess is it is a tweek to 208. Here is the notes:
-
but the v1s doesn't have the t5500...
-
Have somebody tried to upgrade memory? I was not able to open the memory cover. Are teh any hidden screws?
-
you have to remove the five screws and the larger cover above the memory compartment then the memory compatment cover.
-
Thanks. With the help of an old credit card it was not that hard. The Geil 2x2memory works nice in my V1s.
-
-
Removing screws was not a problem. I have used an old credit card to open the cover and unlock the snap tabs- screwdriver could leave scratches.

Newegg has a very good deal ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144066)

Question: After playing a game and quitting, I get a little yellow caution sign in my tray. I can't click it or get any pop up info out of it. My temps are fine.
What does it mean? -
I have this problem: Whenever i try to use calibrate the mic and webcam for the first-time-use on Windows Live Messenger, MSN would crash!
Anyone have this problem? -
well asus couldnt fix the problem on my notebook of the primary battery shorting out when using a secondary battery, so ill be waiting until the next shipent of machines from tawain at the end of the month and will be receiving a brand new laptop...
kinda rediculous being that they had my laptop longer then i did...but at least they honer their word -
-
-
How on earth could he possibly know that?
-
well the tech i talked to said that mine was the first received back to them with the issue, and they tried all kinds of things to try and fix the problem, he didnt give me much detail...
so for now its a waiting game on if the new notebooks will have this same issue, for all we know it could of been an issue with the first batch, these things happen, i will be sure to let everyone know after i get it back...
Jdaswat, when you rma your stuff include your Secondary Battery, and when you write a description make a note that you want a replacement since its fairly new...
it took them 3 weeks of working on my laptop and then i called them everyday to check the status, finally one of the customer reps, talked to the manager, and asked me if wanted to let them continue fixing, or just get a complete replacement when they come back in stock...i opted for the replacement...in hops of a change in manufacturing...we'll see -
They're supposed to look into the battery issue for me, as well as fix the screen due to a messed up pixel already! Seeing as though the issue is unfixable (to our knowledge) they'll probably just give me a new unit as well... Did they give you an ETA on the new batch of laptops? I might as well hang onto mine for a few more days of limited productivity since the RMA is good for 30 days.
Judging by the date you received your V1S I'm assuming you have an A1... mine's a B1, so the problem goes across the spectrum, though I believe my set-up just has a better processor... here's to hoping both batteries will work in tandem in the new units! -
they said the end of october into the 1st week of november...they may have the v1s-b1 in stock though mine was in- deed the a1...
if i were you id hang on to it until early next week, since shipping is overnight and its in their system in a matter of 2 days or so...just be persistant and continue to call them, that usually gives em a lil kick in getting your problems taken care of... -
Yeah, suppose I'll hang onto this guy for a little bit longer.
-
I just ordered my V1s-B1 yesterday from GenTech and wanted to thank you guys for having such a detailed forum/support system. It definitely factored into my purchase. Can't wait for it to get here (my first notebook ever)!
-
just received a call from asus, they are sending me a brand new v1s out finally, i should get it tomorrow or friday...about time its been a long un productive work month!
they gave me the option to have it fixed or replaced so i went with replaced, it didnt seem like they were making any progress getting it fixed so i figured i could handle the wait....amazing how long it takes for new gear to get back in stock... -
That means modular battery problem has not been fixed yet.
-
I have a new gripe, I think.
I was innocently typing the other day, and got a blue screen of death. When I tried to reboot, a black screen informed me that winload.exe was missing or corrupt, and windows would not boot in any way. I tried everything; the BIOS looked fine, I couldn't boot off of an ubuntu disk, and of course my damn OEM disk had no repair utility. I had to do a disk restore, obliterating my HD data. I'm a student, so that could have been a tragedy. Luckily, I didn't lose a whole lot.
Asus' tech support was little help; he just blamed windows. I ran check disk, and recovered to error on my Seagate HDD. At this point I just chalk it up to Vista sucking, but it was disconcerting. And Asus has a poor website and such, so I got little help. A lonely experience.
Any ideas about why? It has worked great since. -
Got my V1S back lastnight...i dont think im going to test out the battery issue quite yet....
they gave me a brand new B1 with a 2.2Ghz cpu as opposed to the A1 that i sent in...
has me wondering if they discontinued the a1 all together? -
I got my V1S last Monday and have not run into any problems with it whatsoever. My only gripe is that the ArcView (ESRI Geographic Information Systems) software does not load on Vista (it knows the dvd exists but shows nothing on it) but as Vista is not officially supported by ESRI yet, I'm guessing it's the dvd. Although other people have gotten it to work, perhaps it's because I have the student edition copy. Who knows. Anyway, I have not updated my bios, as battery ware is nil and the fan doesn't bother me much (it is a bit loud during class) but I don't want to ruin a good thing. Occasionally the battery stops charging at 96% but then I just unplug it for a while and then recharge it again, at which point it'll go back up to 100% or 99%. All gravy.

has anyone had issues with the brightness automatically going to full brightness when on battery, i have to lower it constantly its quite a pain...

ist das "problem" bekannt?... Is the "problem"? ...
Das Problem hatte ich im Akkubetrieb auch und konnte ich bei mir lösen. The problem I had in battery mode, and also for me, I could solve.
With me were under "advanced energy-saving settings for the values of" screen "->" screen brightness "->" battery "Profile" P4GBatterysaving "be different in profile" energy-saving mode "and therefore it after a few minutes on the" energy-saving mode "changed with the brightness settings were far too high.
Hoffe das ist einigermaßen verständlich. I hope this is somewhat understandable.

but it doesnt make much sense to me...
i double checked my power settings to no avail...any other help would be appreciated -
I've just finished reading this entire thread and I can't believe I didn't hear about this laptop before today! It has all the additional features I've been looking for in a notebook: Modular bay for second Hard Drive, eSATA, HDMI, SPDIF, Fingerpint Reader. However, I do have a few questions below which I haven't seen answered yet.
1) Has anyone been able to confirm if the HDMI port is HDCP compliant?
2) Where can I buy a modular hard drive bay for this laptop as I'm planning on using a second 7200 SATA drive with this system?
3) The User Guide mentions a SIM card component slot on selected models. Is this feature available on the North American models? I imagine the European versions will have this compartment.
4) Is Vanderpool (ie hardware acceleration for Virtual machines) enabled on the motherboard? Also, is this setting configurable in the BIOS?
Thanks in advance -
It doesn't make sense to me either because I can't find any other "power saving" mode except "P4GBatterysaving".
I don't know what "energy-saving" mode he meant. Even though I am german I don't understand what he means .
I think the problem still exists here but I don't really care, so I didn't try to find any solution.
I'll let you know if I find any other information on this. -
I have recently been playing around with my partitions with a fun little program from Paragon. I noticed upon inspecting under Computer Management that I have 513 of NVCACHE my thought is that this pertains to the intel turbo memory? If so why is only 513 showing up when it is a 1 gig card? Or does intel turbo memory not show up under the computer management? Any answers to explain any of this to me would be greatly appreciated. I attached an image of a screenshot.

See what I got with the new 169.04 drivers in 1280x800:
Vista is catching up to Xp and NVidia seems to finally work on getting the full potential out of the 8600M GT. Let's see how far we can get with the upcoming drivers...
