Problem: Computer won't stay in sleep.
I have confirmed that the computer doesn't stay asleep. It will do the slow down and quiet, but about 2 minutes later it starts back up and stays at the log back in screen. It hibernates ok so I am wondering if it could be an app? Anyone with a solution. TY
Dude, definitively get a G2S, if you can afford for for the B1 since it has that little extra boost. Stick with Vista 32bit and think about getting a $100 dollar 2gb ram module, because with 3gb and the graphics ram, you have enough to be under the max, while saving some dough. Right now with 2gbs I use 45% apx, but it still runs my CS 1.6, while browsing, and playing music no problem. I have also used the Adobe CS3 series without issues @ stock. If you want to use XP you can experiment with some of the drivers on a separate partition, but do not format the whole hd, as it will loose your hidden quick recover partition.

They don't have the exact same specs. G2S has a much higher screen resolution. The larger form factor also results in a cooler running notebook. I bought the G2S mainly for the screen.
The 17" is only "so underpowered" compared to the 15" if you're playing games at native resolutions. For everything else, they perform the same. -
-
Well, i bought my G2S for the screen and its power. I have had a 15.4" and its way to small, I multi task way to much to use that again. I have a Palm for portability and notes, so when college hits, I can bring both and use whats best. It does eat battery a little more then the G1, but its a beast of a laptop, cmon. And on the under power note, yes anyone one of us could have bought a sager, upgraded the graphics, then waited for the 8800 and bought the upgrade card, but its not the same computer. For me, the design did not strike me as a 2k laptop. If i wanted that, why not just buy a dell and use a 20% off coupon. I get 60fps constant running at full resolution/quality in CS and I have successfully edited videos in Adobe Premiere CS3, so I am happy. Once a laptop comes out, your are already obsolete. Technology turns around in months, not years. I have been using a Pentium M with Intel graphics for 3 years and I could preform all the tasks my friend could with the new Core2 to comparable levels. As it has been said, the G2S and G1S are the same, one just has a macdaddy screen. Bump down the resolution if you have to :/

When I run my g2s on battery I get some sort of whiinig sound. Anyone else with the same problem?
-
Where are you getting it from? The fan and hd make similar sounds, so is it like metalic, grinding, or just high pitch?
-

I'm running XP on my G2S-A1 and everything works great. My only problem seems to be no audio from the internal speakers. I'm using 1.80 HD driver from Realtek. Anyone get the speakers working in XP yet?
-
@ Grinder: What drivers are you using?, the slipstreamed pack?
-
Hi everybody !
Got a G2S a few weeks ago.. quite satisfied with it, actually
One thing though.. I'd like to replace the hard drive, but I'm stuck with Vista being on the G2S's HD hidden partition (the Recovery CD reads from that partition to perform its recovery, which is lame, cause if your HD is down, Recovery CD can't do anything :-( )
Does any one know how to backup that partition ?
Thanks ! -
Ya, you have to take an image of it using like norton or acronis, but then you have to reload it
-
I've got both the drivers pack listed on the G1S forum and the latest from Realtek. Sound works great but no internal speakers in XP. Is there a slipstreamed version of XP floating around?

Hey guys,
I created a thread for this but I thought posting here might work as well...
I've owned my laptop for about four months now and have yet to clean the fans so obviously I should get on that...The problem is I'm not sure the best way to go about doing so. Mainly, I don't want to take anything off that I shouldn't and in result, void my warranty. So I need a bit of help.
If possible could anyone just list a couple of steps on how/what I should go about taking apart in order to clean out my fans etc. I already have the compressed air to use...
Thanks in advance for the help and obviously if anyone has pictures or knows of a link w/ pictures of this process being done on a G1S/G2S that would be incredible. -
That sounds like a good idea, I think if i do it here in the next month Ill update with some pics if i can.
Question 1:
When I am playing NFS: Carbon with moderate settings in 1600x1200, my GPU goes up to a steady 85-87 degrees C and sometimes crashes as compared to 65-70 degrees C in 1920x1200 under normal web browsing or 85-87 degress C in HL2/Deathmatch. I have been reading around and I think my numbers are high. Are these numbers truly high, or would it be a software error, seeing I have only had it happen in NFS. To find the GPU temp i had to dl Nvidia monitor, is this a good app to use?
Question 2:
I have tried turning off Turbo Cache/Ready Boost to see if I get better performance/battery life. Does anyone know of a test I can run to see this for sure. I have read all the articles and do understand there should be a boost in battery life, but I am not sure about how it entirely works. I have thought of it as a bucket that gets fulls, then dumps, and refills, but I have no xp with this type of memory. -
I deleted my hidden partition, and then reinstalled the OS from CD. I needed the space. I've done a dual boot Vist 32 bit Home Premium on 1 partition from recovery disk and Vista 64 bit Ultimate on the other. Works great! If you load the Asus recovery disk on the first partition and the purchased OS on the 2nd the boot manager lists 2 Windows Vistas at start up. I used EasyBCD to change the names in the boot manager.(Just remember! during driver load of Asus driver disk, when it asks if you want to restart computer. DO NOTHING.) After you put the driver disk in go for a hike. you don't have to do a thing till it is done. It will shut off the computer when its done, and the computer will be in its out of the box configuration.

just got my g2s-b1 in the mail, what a gorgeous machine. i'm currently in the process of removing all the bloatware/norton etc... next i'll be updating windows and stuff, but i have a few questions.
should i upgrade the bios to 209?
what drivers ie graphics, sound etc. should i upgrade?
any other recommendations in general?
thanks. -
Ty for your help theros.
@ Harris: I did the same thing, uninstalling all the bloatware, then reinstalling the drivers. I have installed all the latest drivers and only found the video driver to be a little lacking. It has some issues with the newer games and such, but apprently the old driver was pretty bad. There is a place to get updated 'hacked' drivers, but they do have side effects. -
thanks to some guides i found here, ive got my system running nicely. now its time to figure out RAID...
-
Are you thinking about installing another internal drive? or doing it through the esata port? That would be a really good idea to have it setup like the esata to a backup raid, i think raid 5? where it just mirrors, hmm, anyone with better information or ideas?
-
im thinking a cheap addonics box for the time being. i don't need server function, just the ability to house hdd's and hopefully have some sort of automated mirroring system...i just don't know enough about that stuff at this point.
all i know is the addonics box seen here: http://www.addonics.com/products/raid_system/mst4.asp - has the option of having all four drives connect via a single esata connection. i want that. -
That tower looks sick. In a little while I will do some research in how I could raid it through the esata for just a simple backup mirror. Ill post back if I have any good information.

I posted this on Asus website and am also posting here in case anybody has seen the following problem.
LCD Backlight keeps going off
Wondered if anybody has run into this issue. I have two G2S-A1 machines and only one exhibits this problem. Basically I turn the laptop on (no external monitor), the backlight comes on. After a few seconds it goes dark and if I hit Fn and F7 it'll come back on but only for a few seconds before it goes dark again. I don't even need to go into the OS to see this behavior. I can go into BIOS and same thing happens. To see BIOS I have to keep hitting Fn + F7 every few seconds. I've played with all the options and can find nothing that helps. Also this didn't happen when I first received the laptop. The problem started a few days after.
Bios ver: 209
When I hook up external monitor and do Fn + F8, i can at least use the machine. I'd rather not rely on an external monitor.
I'm hoping that i'm missing something simple and I don't need to send in for repair.
TIA for any suggestions,
Mike -
It sounds like your issues is with the power settings, go in and make sure your at high performance and tweak auto screen off to a longer period of time. I have mine set super short to save power when possible. gl
-
Hi quick question for you guys. Has anyone played prostreet on their g2s. Any problems with it? For some reason the game usually crashes after one or two races. Any ideas? Running latest nvidia drivers.
Cheers -
Hope you don't have any problem -
for some reason my g2s-b1 won't shutdown. it just reboots all by itself, i can't figure it out, any ideas?
-
You go here, the the right of the lock button...

Woho!
Managed to get a nice clean install of Vista with the Cd's that Asus provided in a very simple way!
Install Vista as usuall. When in the final stages of the installation, it asks for the driver cd. Then you just pop out the installation cd and reboot. Now it's done
Install which drivers you wan't from the driver cd.
Done! -
I have a problem with one of the four led lights that are placed right next to the multimedia buttons. The one to the left, under the "lightbulb". This should be on when the computer is on and it should puls if the computer is in sleep-mode (or hibernate, i dont know which is which). Now it suddendly stopped pulsing when it is in sleep mode, instead its blinking very fast and irregular. It is still lighting if the computer is on.
-
Tobbis, is you can try reinstalling drivers...as if everyone hasnt told you to. You may want to see about resetting power schemes and checking your battery/power. You never know. I have tried to call Asus b4, and was pretty futile, just some generic answer.
Does anyone have any experience with their replacement program the first year of ownership? -
Sigh i'm having some bad luck with these machines. First one came back (the one with the LCD backlight problem) works fine now.
My other G2S-A1 is now having video card problems. Anybody know if the video card has active or passive cooling? If the former I wonder if the fan isn't working. After the machine has been on (sometimes a short while) i'll get all kinds of artifacts. Even if I reboot and just go into BIOS I still see the terrible video. When I leave it off for an extended period of time (long enough to cool) then try it again it's fine for a while.
I *hate* intermittent problems. I plan to send it in for repair but am worried it'll take a few hours to manifest itself after not being on for a couple of days (while in transit).
I'm actually considering getting something different at this point. >< -
What is the name of the driver for these light? -
I do not know the name of the driver, some elimination trials may work to see which one it is, but it could be wired in with no drivers, I am not sure.
@Mk- I have similar issues with my video card, it seems after some intense gaming they shut down after a huge lag. I check the temperatures of the card and it is at its upper end, but I have not gotten artifacts yet. -
I downloaded RivaTuner and set my performance 3d to run the card at 450/675mhz instead of 475/700. My games are still working fine and i've not seen any artifacts since. I really don't want to underclock but it's a stopgap for the time being. There is an option to show the temperature and it is making enough of a difference.

Card reader (incl. XD card)
Camera
Bluetooth (headsets, mouse etc)
Thanks!
(G2S-A1 ordered over a month ago; still waiting for the shipment to happen from original supplier, grrrrrr. Now in touch with Ken/Gentech in case the former fall through completely - which seems likely now. And some of YOU folks complained about waiting five days!).
-
There is an application by nvidia to do it, download both the utilies for mobile off their website, they have a graphing option for temp
-
Just got my G2S-B2...wow, can't step away from it.
Anyone know how to activate the turbo-ram or display its utilization? Sorry, trying to read through the whole thread before posting, but finding it difficult to stop gaming and do real work, paycheck-bearing and otherwise.
Other thoughts, wireless networking was a dog. Read through the forum and even upgraded to D-Link DGL-4500 dual-band wi-less router (Thank you Kurat for the review) to no avail. UNTIL - ZoneAlarm Firewall was disabled and went with Windurs' firewall. Well, got a nice router upgrade out of it anyway.
Thanks!
G2S-B2 and all the attendent goodies + SP1_RC. -
congrats on that! but remember... gaming is a simple pass-time. it achieves nothing, so don't overdo it. that doesn't mean don't, and with such a laptop, i can't blame you for being excited!
-
Card reader is integral component of laptop and runs directly off system's bus. Camera works fine. Bluetooth has no problems. I transfer files between 2 laptops all day. I have connected cell phones to it and it works on Vista 64. I haven't connected any bluetooth mouse cause i am into gaming and bluetooth mouse is not the way to do pro gaming.
Card Reader>>> WORKS on Vista 64
Camera>>> WORKS on Vista 64
Bluetooth>>> Cellphones and transferring files works on bluetooth and so should the bluetooth mouse.
And so does my 4GB Ram that is running smooth on Vista 64 bit.
What doesn't work on Vista 64 bit:
Asus eye Glow right under the Keyboard doesn't work.
Touch pad lock button doesn't work on top right corner.
I have yet to come across a game including recent popular titles such as COD 4 MW old game DIRECTX 9 ONLY LOTR BFME even that works on vista 64.
Gaming comparison of Vista 64/32 bit and Windows XP:
There is an average of 20% Frame drop on Vista as compared to XP whether 64 bit or 32 bit don't matter. Rumors are that better game engines and Service pack one due late January for Vista should address these issues.
I have had 99.9% compatibility when it comes to gaming on Vista 64 bit and 99% software compatibility.
Antivirus:
I am not a big fan of Norton<<memory Hog. I don't like Mcafee either. So that left me with AVG and AVAST. I had problems updating AVG on Vista 64bit. So i use AVAST Antivirus (Free) and it works fine on Vista 64bit.
Once again guys if you are sitting with your fat butt on a Vista 64 bit DVD you are making a mistake. 64 Bit is very stable and smooth as f***. Install and run it and i guarantee you that you will enjoy it. I even give you a CURSE BACK Guarantee that if you don't like it you get to say 3 curse words at me for free No Questions asked -

As for VISTA. unprintable bits here
Much research and some excellent tweaking threads on this forum and elsewhere has allowed me to get my system so it is behaving much as my XP box did - in all the good, sensible, user-centric ways, I mean -- not the tyrannical personality which Vista has out of the box!
I think, given my druthers, I'd go for XP64 if doing it again, but it was a V64 disk in my hands, so.... And I now have copious notes for how to get to the same happy position for any future Vista machines.
Folks, when you get your new G2S and Vista, it's likely to be as new to you as me. Therefore, before you get very far with tweaking, DO research and act on Important Issues such as:
* Enable the default Administrator account (and give it a password), just in case
* Create a Password Recovery file using a trivial amount of space on a spare flash card -- or two!
* Vista has no Recovery Console but the (standard) Vista install CD has a Repair and also command-line facility, and can find/apply System Restores on your drive
* System Restore is your friend: use it explicitly before making big changes
* There may be Linux/boot-CD solutions for recovering from corrupted/lost passwords - however, the one I was forced to try at one point did not work for Vista, it just thought it had
Oh, and am I the only old codger who finds the G2S with 96dpi fonts a bit small to read, hence forced to up them to 110dpi -- with the consequent effect on the layout of some old programs? Sigh.
But it's a good machine, and I'm finally (finally!) ready to install Medieval Total War 2 on it. Or maybe my development software...
Nah, I think I've definitely earned a break.
Thanks again raikay. -
Peter, you have alot of stuff that I am taking down for my notes. Another addition I would like to say would be look at this thread:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=166532
It has more great information that I have applied to my notebook. I found that the services and little tweak apps worked wonders on the speed for my G2S. I run about the same number of process, but less services and get a considerable response in speed. I have a newer problem with its sleep/suspend getting frozen, but one thing at a time I think. If only I had one of those Vista64 dvds... -
raikay - thanks for the notes, i've been debating the jump to 64-bit, but i hear of so many nightmares. if the worst thing that happens is the disabling of that stupid eye, then wtf, might as well go for it.
peter - i also use the larger dpi setting, and i'm relatively young.i havent noticed any layout or table problems in the software i run.

Oh, and add http://www.ubcd4win.com to my list of "desparation recovery" options above. Not fully tested against-Vista as yet, but looks promising.
