    @Mr. Bob or anyone:

How is the new bios? I am wary about updating incase of any conflicts. I read that it has the update for eSata functionality, but is there any other incentive as I have not been able to get a new external drive with eS yet.

i havent noticed anything positive or negative with the new bios...i guess if im not noticing it, its doing its job well.

as for the improved esata functionality, i never had any issues with mine, so i'm not noticing a difference in that respect...for better or for worse.

btw, if you're considering an esata drive, i highly recommend buying a nice internal seagate and putting it in a rosewill aluminum external enclosure. they are solidly built and come with internal fans that keep hdd temps way down.

Yes it does have an Irda, 2 infact(one one the left for file transfer and one in the front for remote controll). I use a vista certificaed remote controll and it works perfectly, so that one should work to.

I have used it for both of my complete reinstalls, works ok, not the quickest thing even if its set to check every day. I think I may take the plunge and update the bios, and thank you mr.bob. Your idea sounds great and not too costly :)

@J-bytes: How do you like your EEE computer? I have been contemplating getting whatever the full version is since my G2 is kind of large for college desks. They are not too pricey, but seem to be sleek. Mainly, how is it with typing/word editing. I have had palm keyboards in the past, and they werent too bad, but I have not been able to find an EEE in person where I live. :(

Are there disassembly instructions anywhere on the net for our laptop?

Isn't the the mini PCI-E for the Turbo Memory and the Bluetooth card only accessible by completely disassembling the laptop?

Unscrew it and you can access the turbo memory, wireless card. It's the side were all the USB is located NOT were the out take air is blown out.

Hey all, I bought my G2S-A1 in late July and I have updated the Graphics driver once or twice but lately I haven't been able to keep up with this thread and what is best to be using for my laptop (in terms of gaming performance).

I just bought Unreal Tournament 3 so I have a renewed interest in max-performance. Also, I am very uneducated on BIOS stuff to the point of barely knowing what it stands for so...

    1. Could someone tell me what the best GPU driver is to use for gaming performance? Also if you have a link to get to it, that would be great...

    2. What BIOS version do you recommend running right now? A link to get this would also be extremely helpful.

    Thanks

Since its a new game you may have to download drivers from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ to use. I have used Rainbow 6- Las Vegas with the newest stock drivers with good performance. I am using the bios before 212 and it is fine. the newest just supports esata better, but you can always log into the asus premiere site and get which one you want. Good luck with your gaming.

Does anyone know if the primary ram slot is the one under the keyboard? I am thinking about upgrading the ram and I do not want to be using the older ram. I know that it is only as fast as its slowest link (because i would be getting a little faster upgrade for 1 slot) but i would prefer the vid card to use the old stuff. Or is the secondary the one that the vid card doesnt use, so it would be ok to upgrade. I do not have enough money for 2, so I just want to maximize performance.

i'm 99% certain the secondary slot is under the keys. the primary is easy to get at from underneath.

call asus and they will talk you through your upgrade as you do it because they have great customer service.

Under there I only have the WiFi card and two open Mini PCI-Express slots with an antenna running over to the TV Card port thing. Wheres the bluetooth at? I thought it was a separate card, like right under the spot where you put your contact information.

I remember seeing pictures somewhere on the net that showed this but I can't find them. It would be nice if there were some disassembly instructions some where.

You have a antenna to a TV Card port thing? (is that like the Svid or HDMI?)

I would suggest if you are looking for the Bluetooth to find the Wireless Card, they are usually together. I may take my rig apart this weekend, if I do I will post pictures and see about IDing some stuff.

@Bob: I will make sure to call them, so do you think it is best to upgrade on the primary slot? Although I have owned a laptop in the past, I did not pay attention to alot of these finer details :/

The arrow in this picture (not mine, courtesy google images) points to the two empty mini pci-express ports, and that little cable thats taped to the bottom runs to the side of the laptop where theres the black plastic piece over a port for an antenna for a tv card.

The card right above it is the wireless.

If your gonna take the whole laptop apart documenting the steps would be amazing, since they're aren't any instructions on the internet

Hey guys my G2P got a bit wet due to a flood in my apartment. Some water got into the audio ports on the side and even crept up into the expansion slots.
I've removed the battery and had it drying out for the past week but I'm kinda afraid to turn it on.
Is there anything further I should do to try and prevent any issues with it?

My friend had fruit juice go into his macbook so he had it cleaned out with some kinda of special solution, I am not sure what it was, but you may want to check incase the water left some residue.

@gengerald - i've never read anything stating exactly how a video card goes about sharing ram, so i cant say for sure which slot would be better to upgrade. i'm curious though, if you happen to discover something, please let us know.

@shiro - from my experience with electronics (i work as an electrician for film/tv) water can really only do damage if the system is on and it creates a short, or if minerals left behind have caused corrosion and now the electric flow is interrupted. you did the smart thing by leaving it to dry, i think all you can really do is turn it on and see what happens. it cant be any worse than my brother spilling coke right into the keyboard of his macbook, which still runs to this day.

@blythkitz - first check the original post in this thread, then read the asus information booth stickied to the top of the forum & then the windows vista tweaks thread...that should get you started nicely. from there head over to the free windows apps thread, with links to all kinds of great, free software.

You may want to call Asus and see if they would help. If you have the accidental warranty, then call them for sure, if not, see how much it would be for a quick diagnostic and fix, and ask them to send you a quote before they do the work. At the worst, it will cost you shipping and some parts, but they may be able to check and prevent any further damage. I have only called asus once and they were brief, but they are apparently really helpful.

Uninstall Asus LiveUpdate and any software you deem useless. Update your video drivers off the Asus website, and enjoy!

yeah, its hard to tell with no picture. for the price, i'd say its worth ordering. if it doesn't work, you're only out $20 + shipping, but i think its very likely that its exactly what you need.

It's listed as a US keyboard for the G2 models, so there's no reason for which it shouldn't work.

Yeah, ASUS parts are pretty cheap, that's a good thing for things like kbd/inverter/cables/fan replacements.

Hey...I hope this isn't a dumb question but my bf bought this notebook mainly for gaming purposes but I'm using it for basic email/web surfing for now. I'm having a problem with the cursor jumping around and causing me to type in the middle of a sentence and I can't figure out why? Also sometimes it randomly "clicks" on stuff that I'm not actually clicking on??

This is probably user error of some sort I'm sure as this is my first laptop.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

I have had the same "error" across three laptops. Try this, disable the mosepad with the button at the top right. If you want yourself your thumbs sometimes hit it and it messes you up. It may also be that your mouse is too sensitive so desk movement is picked up. Good luck.

@All- Anyone know what Asus Live Update startup task is hiding under, I am trying to disable its auto-startup as I want to run it at my leisure. Thanks for the help.

lauren do you use firefox? if you hit the ' key, does it occasionally move you to the find function? can you not copy/paste? these are problems i started experiencing out of the blue one day, i'm fairly certain its firefox...its not frustrating enough to look for a solution yet though. :lazy:

The copy-paste issue is a bug that Firefox sometimes exhibit. I wouldn't know about the ` thing since I use direct find anyway (what's the reason of typing when focused on a webpage other than finding something on it?)

    Hi everyone,
I'm been looking into buying one of these Asus gaming laptops in the near future and have a couple of questions:

1)The only difference between the G1S-B2( http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=G1S-B2) and the G2S-B2 ( http://1toppc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=G2S-B2) is the difference in screen size, right? The G1S simply has a smaller screen but aside from that, there are no other differences correct?

    2) I plan on using the laptop for pretty heavy gaming and wouldn't a smaller screen technically be beneficial? The 8600GT, while a "good" mobile solution, isn't exactly the strongest card and since it's recommended to play at the screens native resolution, wouldn't the smaller screen (15.4" @ 1680x1050) run better than the larger screen(17" @ 1920x1080) since the card has to work less hard?

    Thanks for your help.

Atrophy you are correct. However, I feel that with the gaming that I do the 17in 1920 is no issue. It does have some reductions but a larger screen is considerably nicer than my old 15.4. It is not only more helpful in games, but now with my design tasks it is easier as I can max out two apps with minimal loss and work simultaneous. I have used the smaller of the two and have loved this new experience. And remember, you can always scale back some games to a lower res...

I just installed the following updates this past weekend and I noticed ASUS Liveupdate doesn't work/run anymore (I get the program has stopped working: search for solution, close, debug option). All it's other screens will show (Schedule, History, About) and it remains in the taskbar.

    Security Update for CAPICOM (KB931906)
Update for Outlook Junk Email Filter 2007 (KB943597)
2007 Microsoft Office Suite Service Pack 1 (SP1)
Update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter [January 2008] (KB905866)
*Security Update for Windows Vista (KB941644)
    Intel - Networking - Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2008 (KB890830)
    Update for Windows Vista (KB943302)
    Update for Windows Vista (KB943899)
    Update for Windows Vista (KB943411)

I suspect it to be KB941644 as it has something to do with a TCPIP fix.
Yes I know it's just bloatware and I should just remove it, but still I'd like to know why this is and how to fix it :p

I also had to install Hotfix for Windows (KB940105) after installing Crysis a few weeks ago.
A few days later the screen would just freeze while just idling (not during gaming or anything else remotely graphics intensive), mouse movement was very laggy. I had everest running at the time and CPU, RAM...everything was running at 100%. After a few minutes or so the screen would flick black then come back. A little bubble on the taskbar said "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." This has happened two other times both about a week apart under same (idle) conditions.

    Any insight? Thanks in advance

What I suggest (strongly) is to remove Asus Live Update, it is very buggy. I've heard the bad BIOS horror stories as well :) but better-confirmed is a memory leak of the software, and just the fact that it usually doesn't really update anything.

Instead of using it, just get the drivers manually from the support site. ASUS don't release them too often, anyway, so you won't lose much time with it. :)

Edit: I just saw your comment about "Yes I know it's just bloatware and I should just remove it, but still I'd like to know why this is and how to fix it :p". I don't have any useful suggestion in that direction :)

LOL, yeah I'll probably just uninstall it later this weekend. It was working fine before the windows update, afterwards it would always stop working.
Has anyone upgrade successfully to BIOS v300? Are they any bugs or quirks in it at the moment?

its possible. penryn is socket 478, just like the c2d's that are on their way out.

same form factor + bios support = gengerald is a happy camper.

I totally agree, now if only I could pick up a 20g with a 40gb cache ;P I love my asus, dont get me wrong, and I am even buying my next laptop from em (eeeeeeepc), but I just wish there was some more punch under the hood. It has the style, i just wish that either the software/hardware from either windows or asus would be updated to give us some punch. These components are *****in' and should have the instruction sets to utilize it...well that was my 2 cents for the early early morning. Good day/nite.

Whatever you use. For instance, if you never use bluetooth there's no point in updating it. It's also optional to update things that you don't have problems with (like audio, ethernet etc.)
