J-Bytes: awesome, it is along with a strong build. I just wish it had a fingerprint scanner, I'd like to have one of those, and a stronger GPU

I understand that there are stronger GPU's, but the GDDR3 version of the 8600 is very powerful, especially for the price; am I worng?

LoL which canada computers did you get yours from?
Cause I just bought the last one from the Kennedy location last week :p

I was almost on the verge of not getting it...I saw plenty other ASUS laptops they had there that had almost the exact same specs (the C90S or V1S-B1 for example; 2.0 or 2.2 Ghz, same vid card, etc) AND had fingerprint reader. Only difference was that it was a 15.4" screen....All in all though I'm happy with my G2S-A1 :)

    EDIT:
I just checked the prices and they went down again. I bought mine for 2039+tax now its at 1999. The two other laptops mentioned above are at 1611 and 2039 respectively.

I've read that this is among one of the quietest laptops, however, the fan on my asus is constantly on. Where do I go to check and possibly tweak some settings around? It's not even doing anything thats graphically intensive, simply just idling.

when im just surfing about or the laptops idling I usually switch the laptop to quiet office mode and only switch to high performance mode when using graphic or cpu intensive programs.

So try out the quiet office mode and see if that makes a difference. You can change the mode from the hotkey of the running man.

What program are you using to get the temps? Just wondering.

My desktop has a SATA HDD, what type of cable do I need to connect the two? I want to leave the HDD still mounted inside the desktop, just doing a quick file transfer. The desktop computer has to be powered on to transfer files right?
The following cable should work right?

    http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2860711&CatId=84

Are there other detailed instructions on using eSATA? I just want to be careful with my lovely ASUS :p

I am having an issue with my WiFi signal and my G2sA1. Whenever I shut it down or let it sleep, it has signal strength issues. I usually get full bars in almost any part of my home, but when the computer returns from a sleep/hibernation or from a cold start, it will connect with only two or three bars. Sometimes this is resolved by disconnetting and reconnecting, and other times, it takes a power cycle of the router to acheive full strength signal. Sometimes it takes a few minutes and it will correct itself. Right now, it indicates a weak signal when I hover over the icon in the programs tray, but when I open network and sharing, it indicates excellent signal.
Has anyone else dealt with this and/or is there a solution?

I have the same problem, every time it comes back from hibernation it shows a low wifi signal I do the same thing you do and some times I reboot the laptop also works. no idea what is the problem?
I read that the SP1 was going to fixes some problem with the hibernation and sleep mode don't now if it's going to fixes the low wifi signal

    zohaib,
I believe that the motherboard has to be SLI ready in order to add additional cards and have them work together. If you want to increase you GPU potential, I think you will have to buy a different laptop. The Asus Laptops dont not have an interchangeable GPU like the Sager/Clevos. Further, beyond the compatibility issue (not possible) the heat would be out of control. Check out this link. The Sager NP9260 is a fine example of what you are really looking for. It has the ability to run the dual cards and the heat management. I am really amazed at this laptop, but it was more than I needed.
As for the resolution, it may be possible to change the screen by getting the USA model screen and swapping the parts, but there most likely is more to it. The power supply may have different needs, and it will cost a bunch... I don't understand why they used the lower res screen in other markets. The screen was one of the main reasons for my purchase of this laptop...

Thanks Instrument Mechanic for ur detailed reply actually I already have the laptop for almost a month now. I am really happy with it. I just wanted to know if I had those options.

Do you know if the videocard is upgradeable?? Its PCIe isn't it? MXm or something right?

One more question, the webcam software 'LifeFrame' is really bad (I know it is the software as I had asus A7J before this laptop with the same cam). Do you use that or someother software to capture videos?? Which one do you use??

PS: by the way that Clevo laptop is nice and great specs, but I really love the look of the G2. I think its one of the best designs out there.

    Thanks again

Alright, I bought my Asus G2S-A1 from Canada Computers, and the hard-disk has been partitioned so I have 51.8GB of storage for the "DATA" section, and only 44.6GB of storage for Windows Vista OS! I thought I was recieving a notebook with 160GB of storage which I needed very much, but now I have just 44GB of storage! Why is it like this, and how can I fix this... PLEASE HELP!!

From what I've seen lately these days, newer computers (desktops and laptops) often have half (or less) of the HDD paritioned. Sometimes named for data as you've said, other times for backup images (IMHO is stupid, why would you back up the disk on the same drive?) There is a way to shrink and even delete the parition in window vista's disk management system.

MY question is, if i shrink/delete the partition, do I still have to format the disk like in my experiences with partitions?

    Welcome to the forum looty.

I'm running on the 209 bios and don't see a difference. Check the release notes for each bios update and see if any of the fixes actually apply to you. If not, you don't need to update.

So far, I've only updated the following drivers:

    Intel INF Update Utility
    Intel Matrix Storage Manager
    Intel PRO/Wireless Driver
    Nvidia Driver to 163.71

Not a whole lot of difference with the newer drivers. The most impressive changes in performance and stability for me have all come from installing Microsoft patches.

I've also installed the Vista SP1 beta v.275. So far so good :)

Why are there two power buttons on the G2S-A1? When the one in front of the keyboard is used, I see any exploding Asus logo prior to booting Windows, and when the one below the keyboard is used, a rainbow-coloured Asus logo is shown before booting the OS. Can someone tell me why this and if there is a difference between using the two power buttons? Thanks!

I have tried booting from a cold start from the bottom power button, but I tried pressing it before when already in Vista and I all the media centre stuff started. I thought that is what its for? Since it's beside the media control buttons too. IMHO

Im pretty sure that the power button on the front activates all windows media stuff eg. music and dvd player on a lower power level. So ur not chewing power running through the whole of windows just to listen to music or watch a dvd.

I just wanted to know how did you install Nvidia Driver 163.71. When I try to install it it says that it has no drivers for my hardware??? And where to get the other updates how do you check and find the new updates.

Thanks in advance for ur answer.

    Keep enjoying ur G2S ;)

zohaib,, do this,, u have to download the driver.. save it to a folder into your desktop.. now in the download area of vide2go or whatever is called, you have to download the modified .INF file.... save it to that folder and overwrite,, and now you can install :D

Hi man you are right the settings have to be kept really low. I didnot like the game in any case. Not what I expected it to be. therefore uninstalled.

I would recomend the new: Company of heros: opposing fronts.or my all time favorite: Act of war

Try these strategy games if you can get ur hands on them.

Why do the settings have to be kept low? The GDDR3 8600 is very powerful; it shouldn't have much of a problem with basically any game.

    Hey guys

    1. Has there been any further gain on using the OLED display for something other then a clock or scrolling faces?

    2. How about a true ALPS x64 touchpad driver (i really like the features it gives).

    3. Lastly, the touchpad Lock button. Would love to be able to use it.

I've searched and havn't seen any answers so i feel i already know the answer to them, however maybe some one has some insider info? :)

I have actually 4GB of RAM but only see 3GB in my Vista Ultimate 32bit. I bought the Vista 64bit retail but installed 32bit as I heard that all games are 32bit based. Even though I see only 3GB in the stupid 32bit Vista that doesnot change the fact that I have 4GB of RAM on my laptop.

And as for the game "The world in conflict". I have a cracked game so I cannot install all updates (I don't know if that is the problem). In the game enviroment all works fine with medium settings but in the "Movies/story" before a mission starts I have to have low settings to get the sound and grafics at the sametime. Do you have the same problem or what???

Any way it doesn't matter as I uninstalled "World in conflict" game. I am loving and playing "Company of Heros: Opposing fronts."

They will ofcourse run on 64 bit but they are designed for 32 bit version. I think they run better on 32bit version. That is what I heard I might be wrong.
