I don't understand why it isn't working. I think you have an isolated problem.

Yeah, i can't imagine it would be the problem of G2S-A1's in general but unfortunately you've probably stumbled upon, like kierkes says, an isolated problem.

Should I get better performance using Windows XP? I'm not very impressed with Vista. I thought about getting Vista Ultimate 64bit so that all 4GB of RAM would be recognized but I've also read negative things about 64bit Vista and compatability issues with games. I'm thinking my next move is to install XP. Nothing at the moment makes use of DX10 anyways and I could wait until Vista SP1 comes out in December before possibly going back to Vista.

If you have Vista-32bit and 4 gigs of RAM, it can somehow slow it down. Read that somewhere. It wouldn't just not be recognized, but it would also hinder the computer. Ultimately, reverting back to XP is your choice; there is a thread for G1S XP drivers and I can't imagine the G2S drivers to be much, if at all, different.

I am playing FEAR, NFS carbon Hit man blood money, C&C 3 and LOTR. First of all Pegasus you said yourself that at first the game was running fine then later it started to slow down. That clearly indicates that there is something wrong somewhere. With the games mentioned above all are running on Max settings except Fear and NFS. As you know Fear has some crazy butt graphics so there i have to adjust settings. NFS i am not too impressed by their game engine. If turn on motion blur and go real high resolution it does drop down to 15 FPS which is unplayable.

    Questions for you:
Which Antivirus program are you using?
Have you defragmented your hard disk?
Obolivion..do you have a latest patch?
Is your laptop set on extreme performance?

I have 4gb of ram on vista 32. I am running into bottlenecks since 4th module is not working. Vista is highly stable and lot better than XP. If you remember till 6 months ago they were still realeasing critical updates for XP. Vista with new service pack should be better. And if you like consoles then you should have never bought a laptop. You can not compare a dedicated console processor with a gaming laptop. There are many of us here who are happy with their purchase. And i do not recall a single laptop here on the forums which doesnt have issues. Thats why we have 1000's of posts under every brand. Otherwise we wont have these forums would we?

    ^nuff said!

Im playing fear & oblivion. Fear on max settings, and oblivion on medium with the streamline mod, it helps a lot. Neverwinter Nights 2 of Maximum settings too.

Im definitely happy on my purchase.

    Railkay, to answer your questions...

    1. I'm using Norton Internet Security, the one that was pre-installed by ASUS
    2. Yes, I've ran defrag a few times
    3. I did download the latest patches for oblivion, but not sure about the streamline mod. Havent installed that.
    4. Hmmmm, I'm at work now and dont have laptop with me, have to check on the performance setting. Is that under the video card settings?

Something else I noticed happening recently is that Vista hangs intermittenly when booting on the progress bar graphic. I have to power off and reboot again. I noticed one time at the progress bar it quickly blue screened and rebooted itself.

I plan to re-image the laptop with the restore CD from ASUS and do some benchmarks and see if performance improves. When I mentioned in my first post about remembering Oblivion running smoothly when I first installed it, I had only played about 30min and was outdoors for about 10min when I left the sewers at the beggining of the game. I was running at 1680 x 1050 (1920 x 1200 was choppy). Everything seemed to run smoothly then. I didnt play again until about two weeks later and thats when I noticed extreme sluggishness outside, even at 800 x 600 res. But based on what I've read here, that shouldnt be the case. Several other programs and games had been installed since I had last played Oblvion.

Thanks guys for all your help.

EDIT: Ok, I checked and my laptop is set for Maximum Performance. I don't see an Extreme option.

if i dont use this for gaming will it still be worth it of a purchase??
i will mainly be using it for surfin net/chatting/BT/ and some work
also .. is there a smaller size screen available ? (15"?)
and i was wondering if it breaks down, hows the service of ASUS in the states?

Why would you need a gaming laptop if it's not for gaming?

There is the G1S that is 15.4''. But if it's not for gaming, you could get a similar laptop for $300-600 less

Yes, Sir it sure is worthed. If you are comfortable with 17 inch screen then go for it. Otherwise 15 inch ASUS G1S is out there. Why 17 inch version>>>Screen is Gorgeous. Watching movies on it is an Experience. Now if you arent into gaming and movies both then go for 15 inch G1S.

Asus has one of the BEST customer supports out there.

    Pegasus>>
After you do a fresh install. Please delete all the bloatware. Why would you wana run Norton security suite when it expires in 30 days. Please read on the ASUS resource thread. Again right after the fresh install you need to delete all the bloatware first. Update video card drivers. Install oblivion. DO NOT install any patches. Run the game and go outside the sewerage :) Install all the patches for the game. Replay it.
And that was my bad calling it extreme performance and not Maximum.

I just noticed something. I had upgraded to 4GB of RAM using Corsair DDR2 667mhz (PC2 5300) memory. Well, looking at the 2GB memory that had shipped with the laptop that I took out when upgrading, it says GDDR2-667 on the chip. Does that mean that it's Graphics DDR2? That would mean that the memory I replaced it with may be slower to perform in games, even though the memory clock speed is the same. I also just checked Newegg.com and don't see GDDR2 RAM as even being available. I'm a little confused now. Anybody here know more about this?

    I haven't re-imaged my laptop yet.

EDIT: I stumbled across this thread. This person is having the same issues I am

I have just Finished installing the VISTA 64 Ultimate Edition on my lappy :D

    1) Stable as hell.
    2) I see atleast 30% performance increase on almost all applications.
    3) Playing Fear and C&C 3. Having no problems whatsoever.
    4) I see my full 4 GBs available and being utilized.
    5) I used original ASUS Drivers Support CD. It comes with all that you need for
    64 bit drivers installation.
    6) Only thing not working is the Touch pad Lock button up on top right on the
laptop. This is a confirmed bug while using VISTA 64.

If you guys have been thinking about using 64 bit edition then do it without hesitation. I have had doubts but it is working amazingly well so far. I am aware of certain games having compatibility issues. But what i am playing now is running fine. After formatting my C drive during installation of Vista 64 it didnt take but 14 minutes :) to install 64 bit edition.

PS: I had 4gbs of ram running on vista 32bit. I was getting into bottlenecks. Now when i use 64 bit i am not just using all 4 gbs but without bottlenecks. So if you are about to make a switch from 32 to 64 bit on a 2 gb ram you might not see the same performance increase that i mentioned above. But i can guarantee that you will see and feel the over all power fo the 64 bit and full utilization of your dual core Santa Rosa processor. :p

Awesome railkay. I've been debating upgrading to Vista Ultimate 64bit, just strapped for cash at the moment. I also want to replace my hard drive with the Hitatchi 7200rpm 200GB. At the moment I still have not reimaged my laptop. Debating if I want to use XP instead, but may just wait now and go with Vista Ultimate 64bit.

My in game performance is still terrible in Oblivion and R6 Vegas, as well as a few others. I've tried everything suggested in various threads short of wiping out the hard drive. I'll have more time to work on it this weekend.

I have read your other threads on game performance. I would suggest to wait till you can get a hold onto vista 64 bit dvd. Do a format on C drive and a fresh install of 64 bit. Install all the drivers from the ASUS support CD. Do not install anything else. Try your games....hopefully that will solve most of your issues.

What BIOS version are you using? I'm currently using 208. I'm wondering if that is when my problem started when I first updated my BIOS from 204 to 205. Newer versions have not helped performance either. Is it possible to flash back to the older 204 BIOS version?

    Hi all,

Although I haven't received my G2S-A1 yet, I just wanted to thank you all for this thread (and other threads here on notebookreview).

I live in Iceland, Europe, and the only option here was to get the 1440x900 version (although it included the TV Tuner). However after reading through the review and the threads here I decided to order it from the US to get the 1920x1200 resolution. I was able to throw in a few extras ($300+) and still get it $50 cheaper than the plain version costs in Iceland :)

I decided to upgrade to 3GB because of the Turbo Cache (seems to give better FPS).
Also I got the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160gb to replace the default hard drive since it's getting great reviews and seems to be excellent performance wise.
Finally I got the Intel Turbo Cache, don't ask me why :) (It sounds good but doesn't seem to do anything for performance ... yet).

The guys at Excaliberpc.com will install everything for me and ship the spares nicely bubble wrapped :p which is extremely nice of them since it's hell working with RMA's and especially customs if something goes wrong during installation here in Iceland. Allen gets two thumbs up for excellent and swift responses on their support forum :)

Now I'm just waiting at the door, although the computer hasn't been shipped yet. Can't wait to get my hands on that LCD (and cloth to wipe it clean again) ;)

    Best regards,
    Ingimundur

ps. I'll post some pros and cons when I get it.

    1) Install Asus direct console if you dont have it installed before. It is on the driver support cd. Double click and you have full control of the lights and the OLED display.

    2) Mouse pad can be turned off Locked from the 2nd button next to power buttom on top right corner. Mouse pad Lock feature using a button is not Functioning in VISTA 64 that is a confirmed bug.

    3) I am playing several DX9 games my self. For e.g. Max Payne 2 asked me to install DX 9. I did and it is working without any special modifications. Note that i am also using Vista 64 bit.

Pegasus. I installed bios version 208 last week. I do not have any issues except that my partition table for 4 separate partitions is messing up. I am having problems with Acronis True Image a disk backup manager. I am beginning to wonder same as you if its BIOS 208. I had BIOS 205 before. I am fixing to revert back to 205 if it will let me.

    Dear G2S-A1 owners,

I was owner of A7JC-R034 T5600 AtiX1600 laptop. I had a serious problem with my laptop. My laptop use to reboot without any warning and especially while playing game. I send it back 4 time and finally on the fifth time Asus decided to refund 80% of my money. Now I am considering buying a new laptop. I think the problem was with overheating, but Asus couldn't find out.

By the way I was playing "Company of heros" and "Ghost Recon Advanced warfighter 2". A little heavy games I guess.

I am now interested in the G2S but really hesitant as the cooling and the layout of the component is just the same as the A7 series. I am afraid to have the same problem again. I want to ask you guys as you have used the laptop first hand.
    1. How long can you guys continuously game on the laptop without any problem using no additional cooling??
    2. Did anyone have any problem with overheating??
    3. How do you guys compare this laptop cooling with other gaming laptops out there like i.e. XPS M1710?? The external design is one of the best I have ever seen :)

I would appreciate any sort of feed back. I have to make a decision quickly. Thank you all in advance. Keep enjoying using ur G2S ;)

    2. Not me. The highest i ever had was 56. I checked it right after gaming
    3. dont know~. But yea, i choosed g2s by looks first, and then the specs.

The cooling in the G2S is phenomenal, to say the least.

However, against an XPS 1710 with 7950's, the G2S can't compete in DirectX 9.

I've run into a few problems with using the system; no hardware problems. I've had problems such as avast! stopping my computer from booting up, so I'm rolling without antivirus right now; sound drivers limiting methods of sound output; video drivers making my computer crash as it comes out of sleep. However, I'm inclined to believe this is a user-end problem xD and I also got on of the first G2S's off the line, and I probably haven't performed all the updates I should have. Really, all user-end faults. Once I get an external HDD I'm going to backup all my data and do a full system reinstall, and get all the updates up and running right away.

Actually, DirectX 10's going to be obsolete when Vista SP1 hits, which means whatever handful of DX10 games are already out are all that're going to work with the 8800 GPU.

And I was angry at 'em for DirectX 10 in the first place...

    It's an 8700GTX, they can't fit an 8800 in a notebook.
Most likely what would be an 8800 will be a superclocked version of that.

But then i the real manual i red that you have to charge youre battery to the maximum before using it, which i didnt do(cause it didnt say so in the quick guide).... So does any one know how much this effects the battery performance?

Fore i am running both DX9 and Dx10 games all fine without any issues.
All those buying a DX9 notebook today.....making a mistake. 2008 on up most games are gona be DX10 only.
Notebook doesnt run hot. It is smart to give it some air to breath at the bottom. Makes a significant difference in terms of performance and heating.

Some notebooks will tell you to charge the battery completely on the battery packaging itself others dont. Please remember this general rule of thumb.
ALL Lithium and Nickle Cadmium batteries such as Cell phones, laptops and hand held radios. To get the most out of the ionization process that runs your battery it is BEST to charge it to maximum then let it drain all the way down the first time. From that point on once a month full drain is recommended.

Tobbis it is not too late yet you can do this.
Restart your computer hit F2 and go into BIOS. 3rd last option that says POWER under that option it says START BATTERY CALIBRATION.
    Use it>>>it works.
Do not use your computer during that process. This process will charge your battery to the Maximum level than your OS does that is 100%. After that it will drain the battery to 0%. :)

Thanks for the tip raikay, now i have another problem. When i go to device manager and expand "sound, video and game controllers" it sais that there are a problem with the "ADS Instant HDTV PCI". WHen i select proporties it sais that "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". I've tried to update the driver and uninstall and reinstall but nothing seems to help, i still have the problem. Anybody else have this problem and how can i fix it?

Tobbis i might not be able to help you out here. Cause it seems like that you have a TV tuner version of G2S. We here in states mostly do not have the TV tuner and it is sealed off on the left side of G2S. If you have a TV tuner which i believe is ADS HDTV PCI. I recommend that you uninstall it completely and download the latest update from ASUS website. If you are not using it then in device manager right click and disable it :)

    OH SH*T!

The left hinge of my G2S broke off! The thing with the metal eyeball!? OH NOEZ! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!

I shall spam out of frustration! xD

Well...at least that hinge isn't really a hinge. At least it's purely cosmetic. :(

Those two silver things as far as i know are Hinges that hold your mammoth 17 inch screen. Did you drop your laptop or it just came out of its own. They seem pretty sturdy and solid to me.
How in the world it came out on its own man? Does your laptop go for a night walk on its own. Who knows may be when you put it in sleep mode and go away your laptop takes off... :)

Lol. But yeah. The hinge itself didn't break off; the plastic cover with that eyeball did. The hinge itself that is usually concealed by that plastic eyeball is fine, but the plastic attachment with that silver thing and the eye is what's broken off. Cosmetically, it's really really disappointing. :( But structurally, it's still completely intact.

The other thing is it doesn't quite seem to fit properly anymore. See, notice that over that hinge, there is a small gap between that hinge and the bottom of the screen bezel. Whenever I press the broken one into place, there is virtually no space, and I have heard a few cracks when doing it. Other times, despite the visible lack of space, it flows perfectly. I don't know. I just run the risk of not leaving enough room for the screen to move. xD
