Hey guys I made a thread of this but figured where better to ask than the official G2S lounge...

I've just received my laptop and I want to ensure that everything is working properly ASAP because I have 15 days to return it to the vendor where they will still take care of everything no matter what.

I've researched about which bloatware to remove and am comfortable with that, but can anyone recommend tests to do to ensure everything is working (obviously insert CD's/DVD's, browse internet, look at pixels closely). I'm hoping to nail any problems that could lie within the hardware AND software.

Suggestions on what tests to do and HOW TO BEST PERFORM THEM (i.e. best method of finding dead pixels?) would be greatly appreciated.

Right click on desktop personalize vista. Pick a complete yellow background to look for a dead pixel :)
If i were you i would do a memory test. There is an ASUS utility installed on the computer that takes not more than 10 minutes and gives you the RAM readings whether any faults were detected or not.

    Hello All.

Just received my G1S today! Shipping from newegg to Afghanistan only took a week, outstanding service. Playing with the seetings and overall configs so far, laptop is extremely well built, and faster than i had expected it to be. Bag and mouse, bonus! Good Quality Stuff.

Answer to above question... the HDD comes in 2 60GB partitions by default.

Ive ordered my gs2 should be delivered in a couple of days. Does vista ultimate come preinstalled? or does that depend on the retailer. Also can someone list which bloatware to remove. Thanks

Bloatware: A good thread right here
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=141156
Read above and remove what you think you dont need :)
Vista Ultimate: As far as i know the stock OS is home premium edition. You have a choice to upgrade to Ultimate. So yes, it does vary by retailer.

Fore...that version of the G2 on Amazon does appear to be the SAME version available from the retailers you mentioned, as far as I can tell it should be what you're looking for, it even comes w/ the free backpack/mouse like everyone elses.

Here are my problems with the G2S! :D

    1) The sounds skips.
    2) When I use the Realtek 170 drivers and "install" them, it's really an uninstallation of the old drivers and then Windows installs the drivers by itself. The speakers work, but the headphone jacks don't.
    3) Then when I continue with the actual driver install, the headphones work, but the speakers don't. Big WTH kind of irony here.

    :p

You do seem to have a unique case with sound skipping. Is your sound Skipping while playing CDs or doest it skip using media player and a file that is on the hard disk?

Sound skipping from a file that resides on the hard disk is a bit scary. Usually with 512 mb or more ram the moment you click on a MP3 file it gets loaded on the RAM and is streamed to Sound Card directly from there. I seriously doubt that you have a faulty ram module that will cause the sound to skip. Problem narrows down to either your Physical Sound Card or device drivers.

Was your sound skipping when you got it with factory default settings?

There might be an IRQ conflict that is not getting reported. Do you see any Caution! signs under device manager?

Try this and see if it helps....Go in BIOS and hit Load Factory Defaults.
At this point thats all i can think of man

    Okay. Here's the lowdown.

When I load up WMP and play files straight from the hard disk or CD, it doesn't skip on its own. However, when other sounds are played on top of it, like IM buddy sign-on sounds or YouTube videos, the sounds skips, but when those sounds are over, the sounds goes back to normal. The sound skips in Windows Media Center when I leave the computer idle, but not when I navigate around with the arrow keys (which is very strange) so every single time I listen to something in WMC, I have to constantly tap my arrow keys. I know it is not a RAM problem because my computer recognizes the full 2 GBs of RAM.

Updating the drivers rids my computer of the sound skipping, but then the sound output becomes somewhat "restricted." When I uninstall the old Realtek drivers at first and reboot my system, Windows by default installs drivers that make the sound work through the speakers. But when I plug my headphones in, there is no sound to be found. I then actually install the drivers, and upon completion of that, my speakers cease to work, but my headphones all of a sudden do.

So even with the restricted output modes (or whatever you'd like to call it) the computer says it is producing sound, as in Sound I can see the volume bar rising and falling, etc.

I am confident this has nothing to do with the hardware of the computer, so I am essentially confused. :(

I have something to add to the headphone plug in problem. I updated the sound card driver based on a recommendation from someone on this board. Prior to doing so I had not tried headphones at all.

If I am playing a song on WMP, or watching a video, or even playing a game, through the main speakers; then plug in my headphones, the sound cuts.

If I want sound through the headphones, I have to right click on the sound icon in the task tray, change the default device to headphones, and restart the program that is playing the sound or song I want to hear. I thought it should be automatic that if I plug ion headphones, sound is diverted to headphones. This was the case with an older HP dv9000t that was running XP Pro. I did try vista on an HP dv9000t, and I think I had the same issue with the sound not automatically diverting, although I am not positive. So is this a Vista thing?

To those using a G2S-A1, how do you use your headphones and switch back an forth? I assume most if not all are using Vista premium or ultimate. Perhaps I have a bad driver, but it does work well as long as I follow the sequence. I have also noticed that there are two audio devices other than Headphones and SPDIF. I think if you select one, you can use the Fn + sound up/down, and the other may play louder... Sorry I am not on my G2s right now to check, and honestly, I have not tried all possibilities and noted the results.

yea! got my laptop 6 hours ago. I have a few questions i hope someone/everyone can answer them:-

    1) How do you turn off the annoying 'ask the permisson' thingy? Everytime i want to install something or open something, the pop-up simply popped out. (Vista Ultimate here) I tried going to ControlPanel->UserAccounts, and set my Profile as Administrator, but nothing changes.

    2) About the Power Options, If i use the Maximum Performance(Min processor Speed=100%, Maximum Processor Speed=100%), my laptop turns quite hot. So which power options do you recommend for a good, fast & reliable power option?(Im currently using the Powered 4Gear Quiet Office) Or maybe you guys created your own power plan, care to share some of it? I play games a lot on the laptop btw.

    3) And how do u turn off the bluetooth?

I have a few more questions to ask, but for now i'll leave with this two.

    Thanks for reading.

    1. Go into Security Center, and turn User Account Control off.

    3. Fn F2. And select until you only see Wireless LAN.

I don't use the power 4 gear. I use the power options under the batt icon in the task tray. I find balanced works fine, I just modify the screen brightness to a lower level, since I dont want the torch mode (full brightness) when indoors. Power4gear was one of the bloatware programs others said to dump. For more info on that and other settings, read the G1s threads, they are very similar to G2s especially in regards to power settings, and programs

Does anyone have anything to add to my ealier question about settings and headphones?

What were they thinking? They look awful. Why did they not put a num pad or just leave the space alone?

By the way, howcome the keypad is so far pushed towards the screen? Wouldn't it be better to have it closer to the person sitting at the computer? Instead of leaning backwards gaming it will be the opposite. Or how do owners feel about it?

    Hey guys,

I am SERIOSULY interested in buying the Asus G2S-A1, but I want it for a good price. Onsale.com has it for $1,819 + a free asus router. The problem is that the product description reflects the Asus G1s. I contacted onsale.com and they confirmed taht it was the Asus G2s, and not the g1s. i am still scared to pull the trigger. $1819 is a big investment to me, so i dont want ot blow it off. Onsale.com has many bad reviews on resellerratings.com, so i dont want to get pwned either. What should i do? Should i just wait until i can get lucky like that guy did on buy.com and get it for $1806 with a 7% coupon? or should i just pull the trigger? HELP MEEEE!!! none of the authorized resellers would price match this price, so i cant buy from them...

Teh pro if i was you i will not buy it from them. Especially after reading the bad reviews plus not an authorized dealer. Its worth spending 200 more dollars and get it from someone like gentech or newegg.
final decision is yours. above is what i would do.

Kierkes i read somewhere that you should UNinstall Asus Data Security Manager completely from your system and see if that fixes the stuttering problem.

Well, i already ordered it. I know they have bad ratings, but so does buy.com ( even worse) and everytime i ordered from they, they were good. Also, i got it for $1765, i cant find a deal like that anywhere else. what is so good about getting it from an authorized reseller? once u got the product, thats it. if i want tech support, i call ASUS. Also, if onsale trys to screw me, AMEX will not hold me liable. So i am still waiting on my laptop to give the final verdict. Hope to God everything goes good!!!

Oblivion. I use the Streamline mod. Awesome FPS gain.

Battlefield 2142. Medium settings, because the differences between that and high are negligible.

Guild Wars. Constant V-sync cap even at 1920x1200. :)

    CS:S DoD:S HL2 :DM. Awesome FPS. :D

K John. You go into Control Panel. You go into System and Maintenence, then Device Manager. Expand Display Adapters, and double click the only option, which is the 8600M GT. Go to the drivers tab, and Update Driver. Browse you computer for driver software, then Let Me Pick...Select the one you wish to upgrade to.

No problem. I myself was putting off the new driver install because I was having freeze issues with Guild Wars, so after the rollback I accidentally installed the new drivers when testing the steps. :p

Had to roll back again, haha.

Oh, and I can't uninstall the ADSM. Everytime I try it, setup.exe stops working xD. I try to reinstall the ADSM and reboot, but I can't seem to get it to uninstall. :( Need help. :D

So what should i do now? i dont want to have to ship this back. Will me credit card company give me money money back since this is fraud ( aka i get to keep a free lappy)?

Sorry dude but your not gonna get it for free. As for fraud you can argue that what you received was significantly different then what was described, if the description was for the g2s-a1, but because they did send you a laptop out your not gonna get a full refund. Your best bet is to get the advice of your cc company and to send it back or keep it and ask for a discount.

In that case i am almost certain that this is where your STUTTERING sound problem is like i said on PM's.

    Follow this:
Install ADSM fresh from ASUS CD.
    Reboot computer once after install.
    Reboot again in SAFE MODE
    Uninstall Asus Data Security Manager.
And your sound should stop Skipping. :)

Is anyone else here having really slow performance in some games? I've upgraded my laptop to 4GB of RAM (32bit Vista only sees 3GB) and even installed 1GB of Intel Turbo Memory. Oblivion is like a slideshow when outdoors, even at 1024x768 and 800 x 600res. I also picked up Rainbow Six: Vegas and it runs extremely slow and studders, especially when the blur effect occurs. This is quite upsetting. I've updated all my drivers and flashed my bios to version 207 (the Vista 32bit version of the bios).

Also, I dont seem to remember Oblivion running this slow when I first installed it. When I made it outside from the sewers, the detail looked fantastic and was smooth, the water effects were really good too by the lake there. I moved around and remember being impressed by how the game ran. Later I noticed it being really slow outdoors to the point of being unplayable. I had installed quite a few programs and other games by that time though so wonder if maybe something that was installed is hosing up my performance. Even RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 studders quite a bit when my fireworks display goes off and that game is several years old.

I'm at the point now of purchasing a faster and larger hard drive, 7200rpm 200GB Hitatchi drive, and putting Windows XP Pro on. Has anyone else here experienced really slow perfermance in games, or these games specifically?

If it weren't also having R6V slowdowns, then I'd say mods are doing it. Mods destroy game performance. :p

    As for R6V, I don't know.

Well, think I'm going to just stick with my XBOX 360 for games. I've spent the whole 3 weeks I've had my laptop trying to tweak it and improve performance to no avail. Havent even enjoyed it yet. Guess I wasted 2k. Based on reviews of those here and elsewhere I expected decent performance out of this.
