Please freely share your knowledge, problems and solutions to keep this model and this forum community in good spirits. Hope this helps everyone here and those who are interested in buying this model.

I recently received my G2S from Gentechpc. I am very happy and content with my choice that i made for a premium gaming laptop. It truly is an amazing machine. Does what it is supposed to do and that is pure and raw power for gaming. Beautiful, gorgeous and stunning Screen and awesome design. I have updated my BIOS to version 205 and Intel chipset drivers.

Please Note most of the ASUS Vista 32 bit drivers are outdated on the site or are the same as the stock versions already installed on G2S.

Things to consider (Right Out Of the BOX) Before Powering on your new Lap Top and After powering it on:
**Start your computer hit F2 and go into BIOS. 3rd last option that says POWER under that option it says START BATTERY CALIBRATION. Use it>>>it works.Do not use your computer during that process. This process will charge your battery to the Maximum level than your OS does that is 100%. After that it will drain the battery to 0%.
**Once logged into Vista. Use Vista memory Diagnostic Tool to check your memory for Page Faults and other errors. (Tool acts funny with Vista 64 Bit)

I hate you! You keep making me doubt what I want for a notebook. I need to endure my brain spinning and spinning for three more weeks until I buy mine. I can now add the G2S simply because of the pics....actually the pics just help push it onto my list. It was on deck to the on deck for the longest time. Please post how you like yours. Thanks.

Riffajaff. Close your eyes and order it dude. Pics....trust me are just telling you half the story. I can take a picture at 10 megapixels of the Vista Desktop :D
Regular movies on this thing almost look like HD movies. I have used ASUS motherboards when they first came out. From ASUS n2 deluxe and so on....the packaging, box and small goodies like screen cleaner cloth AND the Back Pack is simply awesome. That in itself tells you how the manufacturer is committed to their production. The moment you grab the laptop you feel the solid build quality.
Back Pack it self can easily would have gone on sale for 100 or more dollars. Carrying this baby inside the backpack Piece of cake. I am currently carrying 160 GB Iomega with a big butt power supply since it is external and is 7200RPM easily in the back pack. I can for sure squeeze in another 15 inch laptop in the back pack, wont need to goto the gym anymore though.
I have had ten people here who just looked at the laptop and the back pack guess what was the first word outa there mouth? WOW :p

I have been asking about noise from this laptop on several threads and it seems to be noisefree laptop.

    Am I right?

Did you get any remote control with the unit?

Fist of all, a couple of comments and answers.
I just got my laptop and it is trully gorgeous. Great vivid and colorful screen. Like Raikay said, the pictures dont do it. You need to see it, touch it even.

boromb - Now that you mentioned it, it is noiseless. I didnt noticed it before until I read your post. It is trully quiet.

Gromix - I installed the 1G Intel Turbo Memory - bought it at amazon.com - and set it up. It is fast, but I didnt noticed much faster than without it. I suppose the difference will be when I start installing all the development software.

The Laptop came with a 5400 100GB SATA, which I am replacing with the 160 7200 SATA-300. When I do this, I will install Vista 64 on it. I attempted to install XP in the existing drive, but I realized I don't have the SATA drivers for it and they are required during installation. I will also replace the memory with 4 Gigs (2x 2G modules) with heat disipation cover - Memory came out at $99.00 each after rebate.

I trully recommend this laptop even as a main desktop. I have always have ASUS Mother boards, but never a laptop. I am happy I decided to get this one. I think ASUS is always keeping up with technology.

    Problem:
    1) Where is the second memory module for this laptop? I took out the first one and didnt see the other behind. I am thinking it might be by the keyboard - like other ASUS laptops -
    2) I noticed the manual says "selected models only" for a tv turner. I checked the ASUS site and there are a couple of driver downloads for TV turner. There is also an available slot for a mini-pci next to the Turbo Memory. Has anyone install anything there? Is there another G2S laptop with the TV turner in it? I am soon leaving for Iraq - hence buying the big screen G2S instead of G1S - and a TV turner would be great there. This laptop will also be my DVD player and if possible, my tv.
    3) I want to install XP in the existing 100G hd, but XP native drivers doesnt have anything for SATA. I checked the ASUS site - and hitachi HardDrvs - and didnt see anything for it at first view. Does anyone know where I can find XP. It seems silly to go to XP, but I need it for compatibility with certain applications I use for work

    Solution: Pending

Thank you for your answer SupesFan!

I'm going to order one of those. Here in Sweden the G2S is sold with some digital tv thing..

Is there any remote control coming with the laptop?
Is there place for two harddrives? Sound so
Is there any WindowsVista CD following?

    Best regards!

Although I have not opened up my G2s, I think the only way to have twin HDD will be to use an external with the eSata connection. Further, if two would work, the vendors would sell you two :), besides 160Gb 7200rpm drives have plenty of speed and space.

I just loaded Fear (only good 3D game I have so far), and it looks great. With auto detect, and display set to 1400x1050, it was very playable. I was also sucessful in getting my xBox 360 controller to work with any configuration I like. (I have not mastered keyboard and mouse, but I have plenty of console gaming under my belt :))

    WTF!?

I just got my G2S, but the screen is not the nice one. I just got 1440x900 and not the 1920x1200. I thought all G2S had the nice resolution?

The name on mine is G2S-7R023G. What name do the G2s with the nice screen have?

    That stinks!
If you can return it, I would do that and try and get a WUXGA screen (G2s-a1), in my opinion it is the best part of the laptop. I had a HP with the same screen you have on your unit, and I can tell you, the G2s' WUXGA screen is as bright, with all the resolution goodness.

I live in Sweden and I can just find G2S-7R023G for sale.

I sad to store owner to not send the notebook if it don't have the high resolution.

****, now I have to find something else.

Does anyone know if those high resolution screens will be available in Sweden?

    Best regards, Boris

Damn I have checked the Italian wep pages and all model have different codes, but all whit the same resolution 1400x1050 :( the codes are G2S-7R026C and G2S-7R024C....

How is this possible? It was written that all model of Asus G2s will have the resolution of 1920x1200!!!! Just the G2p have the resolution of 1400x1050.
The difference whit the old one and the new one it was in resolution, santa rosa chipset, nvidia 8600gt and so on....

Im not happi now...where in Europe can buy it whit the resolution of 1920x1200?

I have also checked the italian version of asus page and there have just the model whit the resolution of 1400x1050 wxga not the wxuga.... link http://www.asus.it/products.aspx?l1=5&l2=74&l3=463&l4=0&model=1675&modelmenu=2

I think that wuxga is just available in US :(

Now i have checked also the others country in Europe and all have just the model whit worst resolution wxga :(

Ok those of you who wana know about Intel Turbo Memory.

    http://anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/intel/showdoc.aspx?i=3009

Please read the above articel. Turbo memory or Intel Robson is a nice idea. But Vista can not implement the theory into actual reality yet. Rumors are that in December SP1 for Vista is coming out with lota bug fixes. In my opinion the performance of applications on Vista is slower than XP despite the crazy specs if got.

Majority of our hurdles are and will be because of Vista and not anything else.

Guy in Sweden that really sucks man that they are offering only that resolution in Sweden, not like in states.

Laptop is super quiet and super cool, not nearly as hot as most of you will think of it as.

Hmm, I don't think mine is "super quiet"...

I have "power4gear battery saving" running right now. Is that supposed to be the coolest and most quiet powersaving program?

I had an HP with the Dual lamp WXGA+ screen, and now I have the Dual lamp WUXGA on my Asus. Both screens will be more than bright, infact these screens are brighter than my older Samsung 19 inch LCD for my desktop. I can take this outside and turn up the brightness, or dull it down while inside my house at night, you get it all. What the WXGA doesnt offer is screen realestate. You cant get anymore room than what is there, and for many applications, there is not enough. like Google earth. With WUXGA you can increase the DPI or change resolution to fit your needs, personally, at 96 dpi on a 17.1" text is almost too small, but upping the dpi to 125%, everything is Just Exactly Perfect! (on Vista). Further I can increase or decrease text size to fit my needs in all applications. Truth is, I bought this laptop because of the screen, I prefer 17 laptops with 10 keys, but for this screen I was willing to sacrifice that :)
Resolution is what makes the difference.
    WXGA+ = 1440x900
    WUXGA = 1920x1200
25% more screen, awesome color and brightness

Find a way to get the G2s-A1 :D You will not regret it!

They have sold you the G2P
If you check the GPU you will see it has the ATi 1700 GPU.
Call the place you got it from and clarify which model you wanted to buy and check your invoice to see what model was sold to you.

And its nice to see a bunch of you finally see what ive been seeing for so long now. You will notice no other 17" even comes close to the color, contrast and depth of this screen. (Vaio AR is close)
If any of you have any friends with a MBP 17" go compare your G2S screen with theirs. Watch your friend cry as they stare at your screen hehe

This laptop is amazing! Been playing Oblivion at 1900x1200 all day- it looks sharp. Nothing like a good game with great eyecandy to wring out a laptop. It may not be silent, but it is less noisy than the Sagers I have used in the past. Got it from Zipzoomfly-overnight (ok, I'm impatient.)

Vista home just does not cut it for me (I'm in a 2k3 domain, Home is not an option) so I slipstreamed the HD drivers into XP pro and installed it that way. At this time, I am short the "ACPI\ITE8707" driver which I understand is the infrared, so I'm not sweating over it. Otherwise, everything works great. I don't think there is anything else in this price range that is half as nice. If you are sitting on the fence, reading these posts, looking for a gaming laptop in the $2000 range, this is it!

I just found out that my headphones dont work. There are two outputs for head phones on the left side of the laptop. One silver, and one black. I can play a track on media player, and if I plug into the silver jack, nothing changes. If I plug into the black jack, then the sound cuts, but does not play through the headpones. I can test the headphones through windows, and it does work for the windows left and right side test tones, but no music, or game sound.

Has anyone else had this problem? Do I need to update the driver?

I also do not get email notifications through the OLED display or the light on the front of the laptop. I use Outlook 2007 for email. Any ideas?

I believe one of the silver jacks is the mic jack and the other is line-in so those silver jacks probably won't do you any good with headphones (correct me if I'm wrong). What version of the driver do you have? I haven't experienced these problems. Does the Asus startup "explosion" noise work with headphones plugged?

I have yet to have the Headphones plugged in during start up. I know that one is the Mic input, and the other two are headphone/audio outs, and the black is also a digital out if you use the extended optical plug. My problem is that audio is routed around the plug, but yet Windows can put out a test tone through them, and when they are plugged, the main speakers dont play...

jendsdbjorn, have you used your headphones and listened to music or games?

Quite good. I had my first 'slowdown' when I was outside and there was a lot going on (many npcs running around). So I am going to tweak my settings, since the slowdown was not enough to effect gameplay, I just noticed a slight choppiness. Can't complain. I prefer keeping LCDs at native res, just looks better.

I've had Asus for years, my Domain controller has an Asus mobo, my main rig too. I had no idea they had such nice laptops as I've had Sager before. Now I just need to find a nice 17" case that fits it, the Targus I bought was too small LOL. When I went looking for a laptop, I only knew, my work laptop is a DEL, and with 600 more DEL laptops, and a couple thousand desktops (and I'm in IT-I support them) I knew I was NOT going to get a DEL.

I tried headphones alone with Windows Media Player and Traktor 3.2. As for gaming, I've only tried it with CnC Generals as I'm not that big into gaming. Works fine there. Try updating the driver if tweaking the volume controls don't help.

It would be nice if you could post some results from 3d mark 06.

My top score is right now 4881 in 1152x864 resolution.

    Hi!

Got my G2S 3 days ago and all i can say i wow. Its a truly beautiful piece of machine. Out of the box i got a Vista performance rating of 4.7 wich i think is pretty good!? Been running World of warcraft with all settings at max, tried S.T.A.L.K.E.R without any problems and with good performance. So far i am very happy with it.

    Cheers
    /Daniel

I guess you can add one via the external sata interface or just add a usb disk. Putting a second disk within the chassi wont work due to lack of free space.

Got a tracking Number finally! The Buy.com 7 percent off coupon was golden 1806 shipped. Hope it was worth the month wait. What should I buy with this? Turbo Mem, not even sure what that is, the drive is 5400 is that going to be a problem, moderate gaming, movies and school work will be this laptops job, Im replacing my 4400+ home built Workstation with dual 7800gtx vc, I am sure this card wont touch them but I dont need the best settings..

What memory upgrade deals are out there any recommendations?

I just found out after a couple of days using that if i put 4 small "boxes" under the laptop (one in each corner), just to make room for some air under, it performs much better graphics wise then just having it on the desk ( a heating issue i guess?), just a tip if u dont want to buy a real laptop cooler. Regarding the disk, well, 5400 isnt exactly rocket speed disk but it does the job ok, will replace it tho somewhere in the near future.
Also, iv ordered 4 gigs of new ram since iv removed the vista 32 and replaced it with vista 64 (cant stand the 32 bit version after using the 64 on my old rig)

Anyone having trouble with their infrared? I don't even see the Infrared receiver under device manager. The G2S manual says infrared only in some models. Whereas official specs on Asus website for G2S does not say that it has infrared. Yet i have that infrared sensor on the front of the laptop?

Has anybody tried to connect their cell phone VIA Infrared?
Flraer when you go in the device manager do you see a separate 'Infrared Devices' listing?
In the control panel do you guys see an icon that says Wireless Link or Infrared?
