Can someone tell me a good free safe website to download codecs?

I just don't want to start off on the wrong foot and start downloading bad crap on my G1s.

And again, I ask this question lastnight, but did not get an answer...how long does it take your G1s to access the control panel. It takes mine 5 seconds everytime.....It should come up instantly!

    Thanks

Is the CCCP better than the K-Lite Codec Pack?

    Question re: surround sound.

I know there aren't many analog sound options that are compatible with Vista. My question is are the 1/8" jacks configurable at all? i.e. do the mic, line in and line out jacks re-configure to front L/R, rear L/R and center/sub? I've seen something like this before. I'm interested in an analog surround setup for both games and movies, and since the Creative option is out for now (is it?), I'm at a loss for what to do. Thanks.

If K-Lite Codec Pack works for you then use that. I watch a lot of anime so I prefer the CCCP codec pack.

One thing I like about CCCP, is that it gives you the option to install Codecs only without extraneous players IIRC K-Lite does not. Also you can configure the codecs during installation to NOT display tray icons, another plus that K-Lite did not have during setup (but you could figure it out later if needed).

Thanks for the codec pack help

    Another question:

How do you use the easy transfer option on the G1s? The part thats lets you transfer files from your old pc.

I have tons of photos and MP3's that I would like to put on my G1s.

i just gave Stalker a shot... and except all other games it ran everything but smooth. Even on Medium it never felt really really playable... Did i do something wrong? Anybody else tried Stalker? Maybe Vista-Problem? (would be funny as there is an Asus commercial in the beginning ;-))

A question for all you G1S owners:

Does the G1S use a recovery partition or CDs/DVDs?

The more I read on Internet security the more I like Kaspersky, keeps system fast, excellent detection rate, etc, but seemed so expensive, until I found it on ebay for $20 instead of $70!

Thanks for correcting me zap, thought Internet security was only Ad/spyware, should have read the very next line to see it was full anti-virus!
I think cillin may have better wireless network security, but I don't intend on doing anything too secure like banking on my laptop... it would just be nice if I could.

Geek, as far as I've heard the G1S has a partition, but when I ordered I saw recovery disks for the OS listed with it, so maybe both?? But you can definitely be sure of the partition, Asus uses Pheonix recovery.

I may remove the partition and back up whatever important files I have, and rely on the disks, so I can install Computrace Lojack, which should work as LoJack's only incompatibility is Pheonix, but I'll see. Anyone here thinks thats a bad idea let me know why, I'd hate to regret removing the partition afterwards, not that I couldn't make another one, but Pheonix recovery would be gone.

I've had my G1S for two days now. I've only been able to use it for about a total of 4 hours over the two days but here are my impressions so far:

    - I was easy to get the laptop into a relatively bloatware-free state before I began installing my own programs. There wasn't much crap on it to begin with...just uninstall a couple of programs and you're ready to go. In contrast, the dv9000t (and my wife's Vaio) came with so much junk that I had to do a clean install just to make sure I got it all.
    - I usually partition my HD and keep all my data on one partition and programs in another. The G1S came that way - sweet!
    - I had an issue with the "disable touchpad" hot button not working. Called Asus, went through the shortest "Press 1 for..." option menu ever to get to tech support and talked to a live rep right away. I explained my problem, and the tech rep confidently suggested re-installing ATK Hotkey (which worked BTW) - less than 3 minutes to get a solution. Contrast this to my prior experience with Dell  - the short version is I gave up after two weeks.
    - I'm not used to the keyboard yet. Maybe it's because the keys are slightly rectangular but I've been mistyping a lot on that thing.
    - the 4 usb ports clumped in the back is different but it works for me. I usually plug in a mouse, 2 externad HDs and a laptop cooler and I like the fact that I can run all the usb wires behind the laptop. The dv9000t and the thinkpad X60s have usb ports on both sides and I'd have wires running left and right of the laptop - too messy.

Bottom line: two thumbs way way up for Asus and the G1S. I was actually looking forward to spending part of the weekend tweaking it but I guess I'll just have to settle for gaming on it instead :D

What is Hard Drive Partitioning, what are the benefits, and how can I do it? Also what would improve gaming performance more on the G1S 3GBs of Ram or a Hard Drive with 7200rpm?

    Thank You

A faster hard drive would boost load times, but 3gb of RAM would increase in-game performance.

HD partitioning is splitting one physical HD into several smaller logical HDs. You can, for example, partition a C: 160gb HD into a C: 80gb and D: 80gb. I usually do this so that I can keep all my data (spreadsheets, downloads, savegames, etc) on my D: drive and install the OS and programs on my C: drive. This way if I ever need to do a clean install because I screwed something up, I can do that and still have all my data intact.

You probably won't see that much of a difference either way but I'd say the faster HD.

I don't have to download through a bitTorrent do I?

I just tried through my desktop and bitcomet popped up to download it...

If so, what is a safe bitTorrent program to use? I am using Bitcomet on my desktop. Does it have spyware?

I want my laptop to stay clean

If you want a bittorrent program, I suggest utorrent - small, fast, unobstrusive.

Few quick questions about K-lite. I know the old mp3 downloading program for K-lite was spyware free....but is the codec pack?

Will it play all my anime? That I downloaded a couple years ago?

Does the K-lite codec pack support Vista?

    Do a search for Combined-Community-Codec-Pack-2007-02-22.exe

It should work with Vista. I installed it on my G1S.

Yeah, I am working on it.

The reason your link never worked is because I have to use a bitTorrent client to download CCCP. My laptop does not have one yet...thats why download was a no go. But my desktop downloaded it right away through Bitcomet.

My problem now is finding a good Torrent program for my laptop that is spyware free....and supports Vista. Thats what I am looking through now. Utorrent is the download link that says 95/98/me/NT/2000/XP/2003 SERVER. Nothing about Vista. Does it work on your G1s?

Cool, found utorrent on another site that says "windows all"

    EDIT

Erggggggg, I am really getting tired of Vista and these dam security settings. It will not let me download utorrent. How do I cut this security crap off!?

I can't download anything on this laptop.

Whats the deal with these freaking security settings.

I go to control panel to put these websites on my trusted list and they still will not download. Now IE is blocking it.

    I can't take it!!!!

Finally I got everything working right.

I had to go with Bitcomet. I could not get Utorrent site to work.

And I got the CCCP pack. Have not tried anything with it yet though.

But this security crap is a pain.

How come some websites fill my entire screen (like this one) while others only fill about 40 percent of the screen?

Come on man, of course I know how to max my screen....

    Some websites....well....they are tiny.

While this ones fills my entire screen. Just kind of annyoying, thats all.

I am also having trouble using the easy transfer. I keep getting a message saying it cannot connect to my network. Well, I am typing on my G1s using that very network it claims it cannot detect a connection.

I 14 GB's of music and game files I am trying to move over. But can't figure out how. I do not have a transfer cable either. I want to use the network.

It depends on how the website is coded. Some are just coded to fit an exact width.

Once again - since I don't think anyone answered me last time -

Is anyone having difficulty doing a clean install of Vista x86 (haven't tried x64 yet - maybe that'd work... though I doubt it) NOT using the recovery media?

I've hit the snag where the install freezes at the completing installation screen with the dots going from 1 to 3/4 (can't remember) - I've left it sitting there for 4-5 hours and... nothing. There seems to be HDD activity (according to the LED) and the mouse will freeze for about 1/2 second every 5-6 seconds.

Apparently it's a known problem with Vista installing to some SATA / SATA II drives. The only known workaround seems to be to install to an IDE HDD, then ghost the system to the SATA drive (kind of difficult in a laptop). Tried disabling almost everything in the BIOS, unplugging everything from USB etc.

How do the ASUS recovery media get around this? The ASUS recovery takes a long time (couple of hours to unpack/install all its drivers/utilities), but at least it works. Do they use some sort of ghosting from the DVD?

    Any help/suggestions?

    Cheers

From the first day i had this laptop, whenever i run World of Warcraft and im connected to my router using the wireless card, my connection drops completely... It gets disconnected from the router and i have to either wait for it to reconnect automaticaly or click on "Connect to a network" to do it manually.

I have been reading about this on other forums (not specifically about G1S's) and it's kinda common among laptop users.

What should i do about it? I'm sure there's gotta be another WoW gamers who bought this laptop.

    Have you had any problems?

Also... i would like to point out that the bluetooth device is WEAK. I have a Sony Ericsson W810i and i can't move more than like 3 meters away from the laptop when it gets disconnected... I remember my old Acer Aspire 5672 WLMi used to handle the connection from 10 meters with no problems at all.

@killersilver: sorry, everything works well for me.

to be honest i have no clue how to make this work... i only have Core0 and Core1 available... you got a short advice how to make this work for the G1s? I am sure other would benefit from this as well.

If you are using third-party applications to run these, DON'T uninstall them and use windows default. If not, it sounds like a driver problem, search the asus site for the newest drivers.

I'm very short with time, can't read 40 pages, if someone can please tell me what downsides this notebook has I would be very grateful. I've read enough good reviews, but there's gotta be something this notebook lacks, something at which other notebooks do a better job. Also, maybe some unexpected problems, complaints, hardware failures. If so, please tell me.

By the way, except for the inside, is there a difference between G1S and G1 on the outside? design, ports, anything on the outside ?

    Thank you.

The G1s has TERRIBLE speakers, though that goes with pretty much any notebook.

The G1s has HDMI, eSATA, and ExpressCard slot, which the G1 doesn't.

I have one little question. Is there any difference apart from the screensize and design between the G1S and the G2S?

Are there any additional batteries which would increase the battery life?
