Ahh, it looks that way...oh well. And I have decided to go ahead and buy the G1s NOW!! From GenTech of course. Exciting!! I have CoH, Oblivion, HL2, and CS:S so when I get the laptop I will gladly post benchmarks if they are requested.

Edit: The Seagate HD is on backorder so it may be a few extra days, darn. Still going to order it.

is there any way to change what each button does? such as the email launch button opening thunderbird or windows live mail instead of windows mail? or the buttons in the front opening wmp11?

I downloaded SpeenFan to monitor my G1s becuase i felt it would get extremely hot all the time. A second after running Oblivion the cpu was up to 61C(there was a flame sing next to it) i read that the g1s doesn't get to hot, so is there something wrong with mine?

I did not buy a fan ebcuase i was told it does not over heat.

I also read that it doesn't run too hot, but my temperature readings are similar to yours after playing Oblivion or another, like Rainbow Six Vegas. (I'm using SpeedFan also) The vent comes close to hair dryer temp sometimes.

Okay, here's the summary so far that I have of things to do when it comes in from the mail... after charging the battery to 100% obviously...

    1) flash/update BIOS from asus site
    2) update driver for video card from asus site
    3) update driver for intel chipset
    4) bloatware: DEFINITELY kill ASUS spendid. Prolly kill asus live update? and Norton Antivirus.

    Anymore definite kills?

    Keep ASUS DirectConsole?

Anything else that I can do to improve the G1S's performance?

I'm thinking really hard about that actually. Like others who've posted in the asus forum...

there's not much out there requiring dx10 and vista, so why go through that nightmare?

    vista... still beta.

    *sigh*

Vista really isn't as bad as people say. I only had to pass up one program since it wouldn't work, but thats about the only problem I've had. As for performance issues, I like the classic windows theme and menus anyways, so you can compensate there.

So as we speak my g1s is in the shop, due to my inability to fix computers beyond a simple reformat, it is stuck on a constant blackscreen halfway through a reformat. They plan to run a diagnostic monday so hopefully my baby isn't gone too long...i may just buy anew 7200HD if it is indeed harddrive failure instead of sending it away and waiting to have it fixed... does anyone have experience sending a laptop to asus? What were your wait times there and back?

The G1s that I have on the way has 32bit.

In about a month I am buying Vista Ultimate and then upgrading to 64bit.

P.S. And yes, I know that I can order the 64bit media for Home Premium but I need Vista Ultimate for the network features.

Is anyone having trouble installing their own copy of Vista on this laptop? I've tried installing Vista Ultimate x86, and it hangs on the screen where the last step is completing installation. There seems to be hard disk activity, and the mouse moves, but the system stutters every 3-4 seconds. I've left the system at this screen for 3-4 hours - no go.

    Any ideas?

I run Vista Ultimate 64-bit on both the desktop and the G1S and I could not believe how EASY getting them both on a LAN was compared to XP.

    Hi everyone,

lately i read in several forums, that you should install the newest LaptopVideo2Go - Drivers for better performance... I can't agree with that:

    3DMark2006 - free version - 1280x720:

Original drivers, original Vista preinstalled: 4470 points
LaptopVideo2Go drivers, original Vista preinstalled: 4227 points

    Can anyone repeat this?

My best set was 158.28; 165.01 and 158.45 seemed to be duds. Another thing I've noticed is that the 3dm06 scores can fluctuate around 300 points +/- depending on what mood Vista is in, it's best to run right after a reboot but even then sometimes I'd pull 3888 and the next I would pull 3400 (1280x1024)

Can anyone with a G1s run a memory bandwidth benchmark on Sisoft Sandra so I can compare it with my desktop please? Those with 3gb is preferred so I can see the performance difference of dual vs single channel in laptops, but any amount of memory is fine. I assume memory bandwidth would be pretty much the same for all Santa Rosa based notebooks since they all use the same motherboard, assuming they have the same memory speeds/latency?

And if anyone has the time, a 32M or 1G test with wPrime would be much appreciated.

Got my G1s today and love it.

But the speakers are terrible! lol

Basically, they should have just not put speakers on this thing at all.

I have the volume maxed out all the way around.....and I still can hardly hear anything.....I am watching King kong but can't hear a thing.

These are the worst laptop speakers I have ever heard.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to get the speakers louder? I can't even find a volume button on the PC, just the volume control within Vista

Also, how low should I let the battery get before I recharge it??

    Thanks

No, the speakers just really suck. I upgraded within 2 days of purchasing the laptop because even with the specs, bad speakers ruins the gaming experience IMHO.

about to order mine. yay. (from gentech)

Is it a bad idea to do the install myself? I am upgrading the HD and it would delay my order a couple days to have them install the os and drivers. I have a bit of time crunch (leaving town next thursday) so want it to arrive before I leave town. A little worried about the install (they include recovery dvd, not original windows install disks) - if they dont do the install they could miss some hd problems maybe?

has anyone done this? received empty drive and done self-install?
better idea to let them do it? or easy to do self-install?

    thanks...

If you have any experience with installing an OS, you might as well do it yourself if it saves a couple of days. The chances of a hard drive being DOA are slim.

I will vouch for these drivers they seem to be the best so far, second is 158.28, worst is 165.01.

Also, the funny thing about the craptacular speakers is that the headphone output is actually decent.

it has realtek audio drivers, right? if so, you might try changing your equalization settings to powerful. also, in another notebook i used to have in possession, there are some audio settings in vista that greatly increased the audio volume for me.

Has anyone noticed how slow the G1s is while trying access files within the control panel? It takes mine 5 seconds to pull up files (ex. when I click on control panel)

    Whats the deal?

Also, nothing can help these speakers. I used the Bass and powerful option already.

Speakers in the early 1900's sounded better than these...if there were any then....

What Anti-Virus / Internet protection do you guys use? I don't want to go with Norton, just don't feel like giving in to the bloatware, but I might if I have to. Just wondering if there are any other good security software, perhaps less demanding/ better for gaming(like leaving internet security on when multi)?

    Kaspersky is great.

I use McAfee and it is a little bit of a memory hog at times but that is really only when it is updating. It has done a great job protecting me.

I don't find the fan particularly loud. It certainly wasn't as loud or annoying as the fan on the dv9000t that would quite noticeably cut in and out.

I find that the G1S runs hot tho and a laptop cooler helps.

Buy.com has a sale on Trend Micro's PC-cillin which is quite good.

    Link

It seems like these internet security suites go on sale every month. I got Kaspersky and Pc-cillin for free after rebates a month ago.

Thanks for all the quick responses guys! And for the awesome link redzapper, I think I'll go for it. :)
I especially like the transaction guard and firewall of cillin. Is Cillin's firewall etc not too demanding, such that I could leave firewall up when I play multiplayer?
Pared with Kaspersky Anti-Virus, I think I'd be quite secure.

Night Fox, I use Sygate on my desktop, though I don't know how gamer friendly it is.

Pc-cillin comes with anti-virus so you really don't need separate anti-virus software. I used it for a while but never played multiplayer with it so I can't say how it will perform.

Anyone tried the S/PDIF output? it's an optical 3,5mm, isn't it?

It's absolutley necessary for me, beacuse I'm gonna use it as an HTPC and connect the sound to my 5.1 receiver.
