Hi I am not sure if this is the right place to post this but I looked around and didn't know where to ask this question... Hopefully someone could direct me to the right place. Anyways...

I just bought the Asus G1s and I am trying to see if I got a good deal.

    It has Intel T7500 2.2 GHz, 800MHz FSB, 4MB L2 Cache, 2gb memory, 160gb 5400rpm hard drive, nVidia Geforce 8600M GT for $750.

Did I get a good deal? How much do they go for at the moment?

    Thank you fellows!

Good if it's used, great if it's new or retail. G1S-X1's go for $750-850 now.

Hey guys, my keyboard is all messed up, I have tried several tags and didn't find exactly what I was searching for. Well, the problem, actually what I at first thought was a keyboard issue, is becoming more serious, suddenly my keyboard started getting all wavy some places on it poped up, some went down, like, the escape and the keys around it look lower than it should, the F5 key until the f8 key look popped up, which the surrounding keys also does, with also a major pop up around the right alt key. It really annoyed me since I bought it a short time ago, and well, I fall in love with it, xD... Continuing, I realized, lately, it`s not just the keyboard, the whole surface around the keyboard is getting wavy itself, the touch pad is looking weird and stuff... Have you guys have the same problem?

Thanks for all the replies guys. I do hear the hard drive boot up as normal however many times I hear it humming quite loudly as if it is working too hard. I did plug in an external monitor but nothing happens, the external is still black. I do see all the lights functioning as normal such as the green light on the front edge and the green light representing the hard drive. I also see the word "ASUS" in the little digital box at the top left. The computer always stays at a black screen though. None of the keyboard buttons seem to work, I think they only are turned on until I'm at the welcome screen anyways. The touchpad green light never turns on either. I don't understand...

This looks like the computer was badly built at the factory. You should arrange for a RMA with ASUS or if the computer is very new, get it exchanged from the place you bought it.

I think your GPU might be bad, if the computer looks like it's booting but you don't get an image on the external either. You may need to press Fn+F8 to get an image on the external! Try this. Also, if you boot with the external plugged, it should show the POST screens on both internal and external, by default.

If you get an image, then it's an LCD fault. If you don't, it's a GPU fault. In either case, you probably need to send it in for warranty repairs.

amrhailat, please don't double post. We'll continue the discussion on your G1S on the other thread that you posted: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=280623

It may be a driver problem , try it with original or official asus driver ..
I've got same problem with drivers who didn't use HDMI input.

This laptop is lots of fun to play with. With some light modding and tuning, I got it to go from 3650 to 4700 in 3DMark06. I'm thinking about maybe an upgrade from a T7300 CPU to a T9300...

I hardly believe it's a driver problem if he doesn't see the POST screens (ASUS logo etc).

I do know that windows still boots up. If I leave it on and wait I will hear the welcome sound. I type in my password (the screen is still black) and press enter and then I hear the log in sound. But I don't see anything on the screen at all. I guess I'll send it for repairs...I don't even know where to send it. Do I have to send it to the same place that built the computer? I must have it back and functioning properly before the month of September.

And also my suggestions, even if you send it for repairs it's better to know what is wrong (GPU, LCD) and write the RMA form accordingly.

Well, I'd hold off on that if I were you, maybe. After doing some research, anything more than a T7500 isn't such a great upgrade for gaming since after the T7500, the GPU becomes the bottleneck. I have a T7500 and am very happy with my gaming performance. 4700 3DMark06 wooot!

My core temperature when playing DVDs/games shoots up to the mid/high 70s - is that normal?

When idling I'm usually at the mid to high 60s... the fan is constantly whining. I bought this new so I'm kind of surprised.

yeah it's pretty good. i got it about 6 months ago and it's dropped my HD temp around 5 C, CPU temps 6 C, and GPU 3-4 C

not sure if that's significant enough for you, but it works a lot better than the previous notebook cooler i had (the upper of the two in the following picture)

I need to replace my HD. I think it is on its way out the door. I've run CHKDSK from the CMD prompt and it fails at 70% complete stage. :(

What do you all recommend as a replacement?

I've always enjoyed using seagate hard drives and have used the 320gb drive on my previous Asus notebook (M50SV) without any issues. It runs cool, quiet and has been very reliable.

Do you have turbo memory installed on your G1?
PCI memory controller is usually that do you could reinstall the drivers. If you're using XP, the turbo memory won't work.
If you don't have turbo memory, then reinstall your chipset driver. That should solve both the issues.

Thanks for the heads up but I was looking for like a "specific model # / Part #" instead of just a generic brand. :)

I am safe in assuming that the HD interface is SATA and it is a 5400 RPM drive that is in there now, correct?

Yes, you can 'dual-boot' into XP or Vista. You can also purchase an "upgrade" for XP to Vista but that is not normally recommended. I always find a 'clean install' of an OS, not an Upgrade is the best route to go.

Your best bet would be to get an external hard drive and back everything up, reformat, then transfer all of your data back onto your clean hard drive.

when i got my g1s my hard drive is already partitioned into 2. (3 actually, the 3rd is for vista recovery partition)

i dont know if that is standard.

anyway, you have to have another partition for your files and installers and another for your OS.

just backup your files on 1 partition, then install the os on the other

Kaze, if I understand you correctly you want to upgrade to Vista but keep your old programs. That will not be possible. Even if it were by some weird upgrade mechanism, I'd still strongly recommend against it because an upgraded OS will never work as cleanly as a clean install. I'm afraid you need to go through the pain of reinstalling everything...

Once you do that, make a backup of the OS partition with e.g., Acronis True Image, so that you don't have to go through the pain the next time...

Hey guys, I got a little question:

As you all know, most G1S users experience GPU stuttering at 95°C, I am allready using a zalman notebook cooler and I allready removed the plastic on the CPU and RAM compartment (was blocking the cold air from going into the laptop) and still... I'm getting 96°C while playing crysis, I'm using a tweaked .cfg file and crysis runs really smooth (30 - 40 fps, sometimes 20) but after a few minutes I get the stuttering. Can you guys advice me something to let the temperature drop a few degrees so I can play smooth without the stuttering (maybe a driver with good performance but with a little lower temperature). And no, I'm not gonne open my laptop for bringing thermal paste on it :p

    Thanks

There is something that will guaranteed stop that: Google "disable powermizer" The only thing is that your GPU might overheat with PowerMizer off.

And if you want further cooling, drill six holes on the CPU cover panel right over the system fan.

Also, can you get me that cgi file? could you also take a screenshot?

Yea but if the temperature just drops a few degrees I can game without any problem.. 3°C is enough ! :p

But now I'm gaming with the lid (above the CPU) taken off (on my notebook cooler) and this helps. Now I just have to be careful that no dust comes in it.

I've checked my Reg Entries after finding the thread about disabiling Powermizer and my Registry doesn't have the entries listed that they are talking about.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?!?

    Hi all,

I received my G1 one a couple of days ago and love it, have encounted a problem when plugging in my external Maxtor mini 250GB, when i connect it, the lights flash but then error message pops up "aspg.exe file has stop working" and it reconise there is external drive connect but when i click on the external drive to open it, it takes a few seconds, then it says i must format this before i can use it. But i have been using the Maxtor a few days ago, without no problems.

    Any help is much appreciated.

Ok, a quick search on Google turns up that the .exe you are talking about is related to "Asus Protect Copy" program.

A couple of other people have had the same problem with it not working and they just un-installed the program.

Whether or not that is what you want to do is up to you? I don't know what "Asus Protect Copy" program does, because I don't have it on my G1. That could be why your G1 isn't recognizing the external Hard Drive as well?

I would just un-install the program and see if it works. If you need the program you could always re-install it after you get whatever data you need off of the external drive.

But, at the moment, that is the only info I have for you my friend.

So I answered a question and now I need to ask a question.

It has been MONTH with this laptop and no matter what driver I use, the stupid webcam will not work!?!

I check in the scanners/camera control panel applet and it won't show up there. It is listed in my device manager as being there. But I can't get it to operate. What is the trick?

Thanks Usafle, i'll try that tonight.

    Another question......
After running CCleaner last night or i just didn't realise on start up, CPU gadget monitor showed i had 3GB ram avaiable, then I ran "system check" also and that showed 3GB avaiable at that time, when I should have 4GB, then i restarted it and it showed 4GB ram avaiable. (Installed is Vista 64-bit)

After restarting, Performance Info and tools showed "new hard detected" .......refresh now.

Has anyone esle experience similar problems?

You should try using Vista's Memory Diagnostic Tool ( instructions here) to see if anything is wrong with the RAM, reseating it might help as well.
