Thanks 5482741,
I will do that tonight![]()

Well, installed Asus LifeFrame and the camera does, indeed work. But, the camera won't show up in the "Scanners and Camera" control panel. Strange.
-
Does anyone have a step-by-step guide for getting to and applying thermal paste to the CPU of a G1S? I tried reading Lord Neno's guide but Google's translation isn't very good. Getting to the GPU sounds too hard so I don't really want to try that.
Also, I don't know if anyone plays Eve Online, but my FPS drops down to about 30 whenever a station is on the screen or my camera moves through a dust cloud. Does anyone have a solution for this? I'm also curious if there's a way to get it to use both cores of my CPU. It's frustrating as hell to see a game lagging when it's only using up 50% of your CPU speed. -
There is a G1 disassembly guide linked from the Info Booth.
Be aware that removing heatsinks will void your warranty.
If programs were not natively designed to use two cores, I don't think they can be configured to run on two cores by the user... -
I just installed a 12.5mm 500GB Hitachi (HTS545050KTA300) hard drive in my G1S, it barely fits, seems to work fine though.

Is it normal for the red light to be on in the audio S/PDIF headphone out jack?
Mine has never lit up.
No Digital audio out S/PDIF G1S-B1
I cant get the realtek high definition digital audio working S/PDIF. No red light.
Headphones work fine when plugged in.
I have a mini toslink to toslink adapter when i plug it in there is no light.
My turtle beach usb adio advantage micro does light up red at the S/PDIF jack and works when inserted to the USB with no problems
Im using the driver from the ASUS support site 6.0.1.5449
Thanks -
I recently installed patch 1.03 for Rainbowsix Vegas 2, game play is so much better with the patch but now my direct flash lights are always on (on start up with no programs open), has anyone else experienced any problems;
- with direct flash lights?
- is there a way of diagnosing the problem?
- what driver are people using at the moment?
Problem I also have is screen goes black for a few seconds after 30minutes to hours play and loads back to the game but very laggy, then happens again then freezes for a few seconds and game reloads.....so i decide to install new patch 177.98, but same problem. Driver currently using is 177.98, during playing the game temperatures are GPU 82C, HDD 49.C, CORE 1 & 2 44C.
(Another post)
Any help would be great -
I wonder why you still use DirectConsole
-
, but just wondered why there on all the time
-
Also i had a problem:
"Problem I also have is screen goes black for a few seconds after 30minutes to hours play and loads back to the game but very laggy, then happens again then freezes for a few seconds and game reloads.....so i decide to install new patch 177.98, but same problem."
This was TDR error (vlddmkm error message)
Just an update, after trying various drivers unsuccessfully over a few days, i decide to roll back to my stock driver which is 167.62 and happy to say i been playing rainbowsix for hours without a TDR error
Also i notice something to GPU-Z, the Driver Version: nvlddmkm 7.15.11.6762 (ForceWare 167.62)/Vista64, maybe this driver was design to elimate this error??.......
All i know is that this driver is the one for me -
Well picked up a new 320GB 7200RPM H.D. and am about to wipe out Vista and put XP in the machine. Hopefully everything goes off and works well. If you don't hear back from me, you know that I blew something up!
-
Well everything went off without a hitch. So far, I've only got one little problem. While looking in my device manager I've got the lovely little yellow exclamation points next to the following device:
Other Devices:
Base Sytem Device
Base Sytem Device
Base Sytem Device
Never mind, figured it out, it was the RICOH SD card drivers that I had forgotten to install.
Odd that some people say that the "Intel Turbo Memory" thing should be listed in my Device Manager with a yellow (!). But it isn't listed in my computer any where.... odd.... -
Its hard to tell exactly what they are. In the search function, look for "G1S Vista driver pack"
Not sure if the one I found around these parts a while back was for x86 or for x64 though. I know I found one, but I use Vista x64. Hopefully there is also one for x86.
EDIT: nvm -
I want to spray a new clear coat on my G1Sn's lid and around the keypad. Has anyone done this yet, and have any recommendations on a type of finish, or think that I shouldn't do this. I asked ASUS what type of clear coat they use, but they wouldn't tell me. I'm thinking a scratch resistant clear coat used for cars...

Hey guys, I just ordered a 2GB stick of RAM and it arrived! I actually ordered the same one as I saw someone else here got for their G1s. Then I went to ASUS's website and the RAM I have isn't under their compatible list, so maybe anybody here can give me some info.
Here it is -
-
Actually before you posted I noticed that where I ordered it from would let me return it for credit so I decided to throw it in and it worked.
-
Hey all, this threads really grown since i first posted back in page 3. It's been over a year and I just wanted to stay still rocking the g1s. Weird thing of it is, all these GPU problems everyone seems to be fussing with, I'm not even sure if i have them, this is my first high end computer so I don't know what to expect in terms of performance or anything! If someone could point me to resources on how to test my laptops performance vs what it ought to be, I'd love to contribute some statistical feedback.
-
Well I guess the main problem is the stuttering in GPU-intensive games, due probably to the GPU heating up too much. If you don't get that, then you're fine.
-
Is there a way to disable the oled-display completly through device manager? Without Direct Console it always shows the ASUS lettering, which is quite annoying.
-
I don't know, but I can offer the suggestion of trying to see if you can't disable it in the BIOS.
Otherwise, you can always run the LCDHype OLED mod and setup an empty screen.Inelegant solution, I know.

If you install LCDHype, you can turn off the OLED.

-
Sorry, starting to confuse threads already, lol
-
Heh no problem. We all appreciate what you're doing for the G50 users, as well as for the G1S users.

Hey guys, I just formatted and did a clean install, and I can only see one HDD in My Computer. It appears in device manager ans I have fomatted it, and it appears active. Any tips?
-
You only have one HDD. When you formatted it, it got rid of the partition.
-
No, I have 2 x 250Gig. It appears in device manager as formatted and active ect, but I cant see it in my computer.
-
Well if it's there in device manager but not in my computer, it can only be because:
a) there are no partitions
or b) the partition(s) are not formatted in a filesystem Windows recognizes
or c) the partition table is bad
or d) the partition(s) are hidden -
Evening All.
I've happily had my Asus G1S for roughly over 1 year now, and it decides that after the warranty (I only got 1 year, because of where I bought it) the screen goes black and doesn't load. I can't send it back, nor can I access the Bios Battery to exchange it. I have looked all over the internet (Believe me, I'm gonna look for solutions for a freaking $2000 laptop)
And also looked all over this forum. I strongly need as much help as possible. It is frustrating me now. Please can someone help?
Of course, I hear the Asus noise (WHOOOSSHH) and also I do hear the Vista Start up noise, so it is really frustrating. I tried setting up Remote Desktop with it (managed to get Narrator to start up LOL) but to no avail.
Please if anyone can help I really need it.
Other than that, the laptop is amazing. =P -
There're two most possible reasons for such a fault:
a. Your backlight is not working, due to the internal CCFL controller fault or
b. Your GPU is faulty, the nVidia's 8' series issue
Light up your screen with strong light, if you could barely see any picture, then it's the controller (replaceable, low cost, check the Asus Info Booth for links to the Asus eshop).
For the second problem, try connecting external monitor, if it doesn't work, then unfortunately the GPU is out and you should consider getting help from the nearest Asus support center. -
I had a similar problem but I don't think it's exactly the same. After returning the computer from sleep one day I got the BIOS woosh sound but no vista sound and no display. I had to send it back to ASUS 4-5 times before they finally fixed it. The first few times they replaced the motherboard. The last time they replaced a stick of RAM.
-
Hey guys, i'm just wondering which program controls the five upper right buttons? Because one of the (the email button) not working for me, whats the problem there can be?
OK the problem is completed, sorryI just had to reset the program defaults
-
Right, I'm back, and still having the same problem. I read on another thread that you have to switch the bios battery. I got to the battery, but I'm not sure whether I have to just remove and put back the battery, or get a brand new one. Can anyone help with this?
-
You remove the battery, wait for 5 minutes, and then put it back. No need for a new battery. What this does is resetting the BIOS settings.
There might also be a button marked " > o < " on the belly of the notebook, and if there is one, it should achieve the same effect.
You could also have a look at my "No POST" checklist in the Tips and Tricks thread (link in signature).
Be aware that for the people who recently solved their issue with a reset of the BIOS settings, the problem was actually caused by a bad (buggy) BIOS setting that they activated accidentally. This may not be the case for you, in which situation your computer will still not boot even after resetting the settings (e.g., in your case the problem could be hardware-related). But it's worth a try anyway. -
GDI I just put it back together again! =P
Ok, I'll try that and report back with whatever happens.
Also, cheers for the quick reply.
EDIT: No, it didn't work. Still having the same problem. And I can't actually send it anywhere, because I live in the Middle East, and I believe the nearest place is China, and that'll just cost too much to send it.
Oh well, it's only 2000 dollars down the drain......... -
There is some contact information in the Middle East... see here:

Hey guys, I still have the old bios (202) Should I bother to change it?
-
yes, use at least 205, and if you have not more then 2gig ram, even get 300...
-
Not sure where to put this, so I'll ask here...
I'm upgrading my G1s-A1 with a new hard drive and 4gb of ram. I've pretty much decided to go with XP for an OS (I can get either XP or Vista from my school on the way cheap).
Would you guys recommend I go with a 64 bit or 32 bit OS? I know I need 64 for the 4gb to be recognized... but I've heard 64 bit XP has some bugs.
Thoughts?
Also... which BIOS should I use for this? I havent' updated it since I got the machine in august 07. -
Based only on what I have read (I do not have experience with x64 systems) I do recommend that if you want XP, stick with 32bit, and if you really want 64bit, go for Vista.
-
^ I agree with EBE. XP64 is a real pain since their driver support is extremely poor.
-
agree with EBE too. I upgraded too 4gb RAM and use vista ulti with no problems, to me it runs real smooth, and didnt yet have ANY probs with drivers/compatability, bsod, etc.
so I'd go for vista 64
you should make sure you have BIOS 205 OR v300 (it doesnt really make a difrence but you HAVE TO use v300 if you upgrade the CPU) -
Thanks guys. I'll see if I can pick up a copy of 64bit vista. If not, I may just go with 32bit and play around with the tweak Irathi talked about in the resource thread.
One more question, which video drivers are the current recommended? My searches seem to be pointing out 169.04 as being good and also stable. But, I see that there are versions up around 180 available. I don't plan on overclocking... I just want the best I can get that is stable. Thoughts? -
stable...
I use one of the newest now, and no problems yet (180.70), and they work smooth. Before I used the 180.43 and they were good to.
(all downloaded with modded inf from www.laptopvideo2go.com btw)
I dunno, maybe someone before considered them unstable but you should check em out -
Hi everyone!
I just wanted to ask about your current 3DMark06-Scores.
My non-upgraded G1S scores around 4950 points, but at a resolution of 1280x800. I've read the standard benchmark resolution is 1280x1024, but that not possible with my native resolution (1440x900).
The reviews I read about the G1S scored only around 3800 points at 1024x768! How is that possible? Did the graphics drivers really improve that much? Or is Vista really that slow (I'm an XP user)?
So, in conclusion, could someone please run 3DMark06 with 1280x800 and tell me their score?
Thanks!
PS: I use the official nvidia-beta-driver. -
Actually that 5000 score is close to what is expected, I guess even more than expected. Mine scored 4500 on Vista 1280x1024 with no OC. XP is scoring 5400 on the same resolution. 1024x768 scores me 6000 pts
-
32 bit = recommended,
64 bit = go with vista -
Don't do the 32-bit thing. It will leave you with only 3 of those 4GB useable.
XP x64 sucks so you should go with Vista x64. I get higher 3DMark06 in Vista x64 than I do in XP x86.
Buuuuut, I get the highest score of all in Windows 7 x64. Just for thought...
