Beside drilling holes into the vent cover, anyone can solve the "stuttering" issue? Everytime my GPU heats up, the FPS goes into a sine curve mode, up and down very regularly.

Anyone been able to play GRiD or the new DMC4 Demo long and do not suffer the gpu throttle? DMC4 wise the camera panning is damn smooth at the beginning, but gets very choppy after the first 3 stages.

Well, I can play COD4, Crysis, Assassin's Creed maxed out (except crysis on medium to high) for hours not getting any shuttering. I just replaced the thermal compound on the GPU and CPU and remove the black seal of the CPU plate's holes. Temperatures are max 92C GPU and 85C CPU, it's 30C outside.

Sorry if I tell you things you've already read, but this is the reality, either you will have to void your warranty, or you won't play anything but solitaire :D

Haha i feel like asking the repair center to help me replace the thermal compounds. At most i go and get some coolermaster gel for them myself.

For vid drivers, which do you use? Do u tweak using rmclock?

NVIDIA - 175.80 from laptopvideo2go.com. Before that I was using 174.93, but 175.80 seem to be more stable.

Yes, I tune with RMClock, search the forum (start from ASUS InfoBooth), there's a great explanation from Adolfo Tregosa and others, search for undervolting. Basically just turn off TM1 and TM2 and do some undervolting - my max core voltage is 1.1625V, the default was 1.35V if I remember well. This is one more place you gain couple of degrees down.

I underclock my CPU too, down to 1.8ghz lolol.

It sort of "helps" i think.

I opened up my g1s so I could have a look, but where is the gpu? How should go about with replacing the cooling paste? I've noticed quite a temperature drop with keeping the covers off, cpu maxes at 62 and gpu idles at 74 (instead of 85) but still heats up to well over 100 when stressed.

The GPU is right above the RAM (on the picture you posted). To reach it, you will have to disassemble the whole laptop. There are few guides how-to on this forum.

To shorten, you start from the keyboard, removing the two "K" marked screws, then remove the keyboard, there's one screw underneath it you also need to remove. Then, remove HDD (there's a screw below it too), the RAM (just to be safe when opening), the DVD.

You will open it from the keyboard side, removing the whole top case, then the LCD, all that until you have a bare motherboard with a cooler attached to it.

You have to take caution an to be very gentle, there are screws everywhere, don't brute force anything, just search for screws. The GPU thermal paste replacement is very risky operation (for people who haven't done this before). You will have hard time removing the sink from it (it was stucked on mine, so I had to force it open with, hearing a crack sound and praying to god it's not broken :D ).

There's an aluminium sheet between the GPU, the thermal compond and the sink, which is probably the real reason for overheating, you need to get rid of it. I still can't explain to myself why Asus put it in there...
You need to remove all the paste from the CPU and GPU before you place a new one, you may need alcohol and paper towel to do that, don't use metal (screwdrivers) to scratch it off, if you have a magnetic card (credit/debit or whatever) you can use that too.

One more important thing to mention, the Arctic Cooling MX2 guide explicitly says the paste must not be spread (like on other thermal compoinds) ! In other words, you place a small drop on the center of the GPU/CPU without spreading or touching it, then put the sink over it gently, moving it gentle different directions, then screwing the sink screws. Here's a PDF that describes it: http://www.arctic-cooling.com/downloads/installation/install_mx2_retail.pdf

Sorry if that's not detailed enough, I didn't have digital camera to get picture of the process at the time I did this. Search for other guides on NBR too.

Can you tell me what are your Idle/Load CPU temperatures, I'm thinking of upgrading to T9300, I read everywhere it runs way cooler than T7700. Thank you :)

Ive opened up my G1S and I was wondering if it would be usefull to put some arctic cooling paste on the DDR3 memory of the gpu aswell?

I haven't got time to look if the video RAM have a sink. Anyway, it's not the RAM that heats up, it's the GPU, so you wouldn't achieve anything, just focus on the GPU and CPU paste.

Woohoo! Arctic Cooling paste works miracles, max gpu temp went from 110 to 96 degrees. I think my thermal sensor might be off though, I only got stutters at 110 whereas 95 is the stutter point for most G1s. It's great. CPU maxes out at 76.

mm, when the VRAM is so hot and make several DROPS in performance

    I tried to overclockthe 8600gt and 3dmark06: 4600
    without oc : 4800 points

    gpu temps : 88
    cpu temps: 70
This temps was normal... then i think in VRA; (enter key was so hot) then i put a peltier in the VRAM heatsing ( the copper heatsing under keyboard) and now 6023 points with the same overclock

    (all the tes are 1280x800)

I can't compare with my results because you are using another res, but comparing my results:
    1280x1024 - 5453
    1024x768 - 6702

Your result is between both res and both scores, so I guess it's not that revolutionary :)

    Edit:
Just made a test, I've run it with my everyday OC settins

    GPU clock: 500MHz
    MEM clock: 780MHz
    Shader Clock: 1400MHz
    CPU clock: 2.4GHz (T7700)
    Windows XP SP2, NVIDIA 175.80 (laptopvideo2go.com), 2GB RAM
    Resolution: 1280x800

    3Dmark06 score:
    SM2.0 score: 2403
    HDR/SM3.0 score: 2321
    CPU score: 2044
    __________________
    Total: 5771

And again - there's plenty more room to overclock it, my GPU clock can go to 530-540 without reaching 96C, my MEM clocks last can go to 860-880MHz without much trouble, so the score on this resolution will definitely hit 6000+. I'm satisfied with how it works with these settings, it's a compromise between heat and reasonable FPS, I enjoy playing most games on max settings at least 1280x800.

@Lord Neno, still what you did is really usefull, I think we can focus a mod on the VRAM too, since it has huge impact on the overall graphic performance.

    +rep for you mate :)

mm I only want to obtain 6000 points at 1280x800 :p

at night i will try to do more OC with one peltier in VRAM and other peltier in GPU :p

    (i can´t set 1280x1024 because my screen is 1440x900 :( ).

EDIT: mm yes, i have thinking about a mod for the VRAM, The heatsink dont touch the vram modules, it have a "hermal foam", i have thining how to chage it :p

    thanks!!

    6108 points: (1280x800)

    http://www.puchu.es/G1S/record/recordue.jpg

    CORE: 607.50mhz
    SHADERS: 1512.00mhz
    MEM: 900mhz (limit :p)

well. i see that if I put with rivatuner a value 550-560 in core, the hard monitoring shows 607mhz, and 540-549 it shows 598mhz...

I tried to OC CPU (t7500) from 2,2ghz to 2,4ghz, but it makes the GPU OC very unnstable

mm 175.80 drivers works in performance 3d mode all the time (in aero too) and temps in idle = 70.

, but 175.70 use standar2d and low power 3d, then the temp in idle are 62 C.

I have a problem with my G1S after installing Win XP pro Sp2 64bit. I can't for some reason get the ATK0100 working. The hotkey and other download thing from ASUS G1S wiki site was downloaded and installed but I can't get the utility working. I have tried downloads found on google but no luck. Anyone know a solution?

This "Asus Direct Console" application. Is that all it does is show the time? Besides controlling the 'flashing lights' on the side of the monitor.... and the ability to enter Text and stuff in the 'personal setting'.

The installation program shows a bunch of icons on the program like a email alert icon and all sorts of other stuff. Am I missing a required 'add - on' program for it?

I've been reading through the thread a bit and it seems like 'heat' is something the G1s is known for...

Would you say that this laptop may be a particularly bad option for someone who likes to watch movies/TV shows with the laptop on a sofa or on the bed, where the vents might get covered?

    Thanks.

    I understand that, Predator.

I meant, is this especially, particularly bad. Some laptops get hot, and some get HOT. The latter would be classify as avoid the bed and sofa at all costs.

Know what I mean? Thanks for the reply.

Yeah I know what you mean, I put mine on the sofa, sometimes on the bed, as far as I don't cover the vents with anything, it's alright. Besides, the airflow is exiting from the back of the laptop, not the bottom, so it makes it harder to cover it anyway

You should be able to. As long as the CPUs are the mobile Core 2 Duos, you should have no trouble, although you will void your warranty.

That's actually not a good idea. Although the fan expels air from the back, the air intake is mostly from the vents at the bottom of the notebook. Not only are you blocking the air intake, but it will also stress the fan more. Putting your notebook on the sofa, bed or any other furniture that can easily accumulate dust is also bad since the dust particles can accumulate on your fan much quicker, making your entire cooling system less effective.

That's not exact, yes, the flow should come from the bottom, but plate that's below the fan (which should have holes to suck air from) is sealed in the stock model...so it doesn't make any difference if you put it on the sofa or on the table. I've used mine on the bed sometimes when I get lazy, I haven't got any problem with that (even now, after I unsealed my plate)

Hey, can anyone help me? I've had my asus g1s for about a year and just yesterday everytime I turn it on I have a black screen. I don't see anything. There has been one time that I have heard the welcoming sounds from Vista but I still can't see anything. I have tried brightening the screen with the function keys but the screen is black and I'm sure it has nothing to do with the brightness. I don't know what to do!! I'm using an old desktop right now. Help? Please?

Check my Tips and Tricks, item #1 I think, What to do if my notebook doesn't POST.

If those steps don't solve your problem, post back with details.

Thanks for the link E.B.E but still no solution. I did unplug everything and took the battery out but I still can't get into the BIOS at all. And I know I'm not a person that can take apart my computer properly. I don't have the confidence either. What does POST mean? Is this what my computer is doing? Any other fixes?

Do you still hear the boot sound when you turn it on?

Yes, that is a good question; and does the HDD light blink in that irregular pattern that it has when it loads Windows?

To make it clear, does the computer look like it's booting Windows?

It'd help if you have an external monitor, plug it in, see i you get an image. That would eliminate GPU/LCD as possible causes.
