Hmmmm i heard it is now possible to upgrade old G1-S to the new 9 series video cards at Asus centers, is this true?
-
What is the source of this info?
-
I think this is not reliable information, the video chip is soldered to the board, as a hardware developer I've soldered similar BGA chips and I can say even a man with huge experience in this could not unsolder the chip from there without damaging the PCB
-
I didn't think it could be done either... but it sure would be nice if it was true!
-
Ok...another two questions:
1) Readyboost hangs on me after i have inserted the thumbdrive, the entire system just freezes. How do i solve this? (I currently on Vista Ult SP1, prior to SP1 i couldnt even get it running)
2) Is it possible to pay Asus to help me switch my LCD screen to a LED-Backlit? -
Asus doesn't do customizations I think.
How on earth am I supposed to clean the fan on this notebook without voiding the warranty? I opened the panel on the bottom and I can't get to the fan. The fan is blocked from above with the heatpipe. Do I need to take the whole thing apart? -
Can't you access the fan by removing the keyboard? Keyboard removal is simple (remove K> screws on bottom, pop up the tabs along the F1-F12 line, pull the keyboard out)
Razorwind, is ReadyBoost worth the trouble? -
um, my new 200gb hitachi 7200rpmm is having 58ºC temps....
is it normal?? -
Did you remove any panels to help airflow? -
yes. i tried to open the plastic case that cover the HDD and it still keep the same temp.
at iddle goes around 55ºC and scanning with antivirus gets until 58ºC.
maybe is in bad state?? the temp in the room is around 28ºC. -
What are the CPU temps (and GPU if you can access them)?
How long have you had the notebook? Did you clean the fan+heatsink recently? Large temps on the heatsink might propagate to the HDD depending on the layout.
Besides that, 7200RPM HDDs do tend to get a bit hotter than the standard 5400RPM, and the G1S is not at all a cool notebook... so those temps may be normal, as scary as they seem, and they are likely to shorten the life of the HDD.
Maybe you could use a notebook cooler as suggested here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=3248337&postcount=404 -
scanning with an anti-spyware (AVG in this case) i get this temps::
cpu 70ºC
hdd 54ºC
gpu 77ºC
im using xp with 174.93 driver.
what makes me worry is the hdd. yesterday it got until 58ºC just scanning. the computer is almost new so i never open-up for cleaning as i dont think it will be dirty already.
any sugestions?? -
I think this is "normal" for the G1S... as I said it is a notebook that gets quite hot.
I can't be sure of course. Perhaps other people with G1S and 7200RPM (and 5400RPM as well) HDDs can post there temps.
I agree that in a few days/1-2 weeks it won't develop enough dust to matter.
So if you make sure that your fan is functioning properly, the only possibility left is to use a notebook cooler... or go back to a 5400RPM HDD. By what I hear, due to data density their performance is quite close (if not nearly identical) to the 7200RPMs. -
thank you man.
i wait until someone using this hard drive post their temps.
i think the notebook cooler will be cheaper solution (also fast hdd- the reason i bought this hdd).
any people using the hotachi 200gb 7200rpmm?? -
I'm using a seagate 200gb 7200rpm and temps are around 50 but have seen 58.
-
wow, it runs really hot. but mine looks like hotter. the pc in iddle is around 54ºC.
do you have any special cooler or left the hdd and ram covers open??
i wonder how it will be while gamming.. -
The stock WD 5400rpm wasn't much cooler, sat around 48-52.
No cooler, no panels removed. All stock. -
Its absolutely a normal temp for the G1S. That HDD has no cooling what so ever and gets really fookin hot.
I can only suggest you buy the Zalman NC2000 or such to help cool it down. My HDD is currently 36c after some work, idle i expect to be a tad lower, but not much.
Before i got the notebook cooler and had the HDD closed in i think it reached 60-70! -
thank you guys;
im buying the Zalman NC2000 then. not cheap but it looks to worth it. -
i just bought the nc2000.
what is the best way to use it???
- position of the g1s.
- cases of hdd, ram,...open or close?
any help will be great.
thank you! -
irathi has a post not long ago, but since you can't search I'll do it for you...

oh man, thanks a lot!! i will post my results later.
thank you again -
i can see now that i have the laptop opened that the cpu-gpu is very on the upper side.
do i have to sit the laptop very low in the cooler to get more ventilation or i can sit it in the middle (more confortable)?? -
wow, placing the laptop really low (a little part of it is outside the cooler) the cpu and gpu went around 13ºC cooler (48º and 66º).
but the hdd runs only 3ºC cooler. its at 53ºC now defragmenting it.
am i doing right?? -
-
umm, my default gpu core clock with the 174.93 driver is 513mhz (i didnt make any overclock).
i thought the clock was 475 for the 8600m..... maybe thats the reason the gpu its a bit hotter than other people.
HDD iddle is at 50ºC
CPU iddle is at 48ºC
GPU iddle is at 68ºC (513mhz-1026mhz-700mhz) -
Not regarding whether your clocks are correct (I don't know whether they are; other G1S owners should be able to tell)
I've never quite understood whether in Vista+NVIDIA:
a) The GPU never downclocks for powersavings.
b) There is a PowerMizer-equivalent where the user selects the power profile.
c) Power profile selection is automatic and cannot be changed by the user.
d) Power profile selection is dependent on / perhaps in the options of the Vista power profile.
I'd be grateful if anyone provided insight into this.
menko: If possible, it would be a good idea to try to downclock the GPU when not gaming, using one of the options above if available. That might save quite a bit on the temperatures.
(unless of course those clocks are the power-saving clocks which I assumed they are not)
As to how to setup your notebook cooler to get lower temps from the HDD, irathi should be able to tell you. -
in XP, i cant overclock or underclock with 174.93 driver with rivatuner or atitool .026.
im checking it with rivatuner monitoring and it doesnt move...
any sugestion?? -
Isn't powermizer active in XP with that driver version? If not perhaps you should switch for a driver that has it.
-
oh, i have it disable..... i will work on it now.
-
strange thing...
now with powermizer activated i can modify "a little" the gpu clocks. i say that because when i start a 3D game, it will run at 515mhz even if i put 475mhz (that its the default) in rivatunner or atitool. i tried both programs.
the other thing is that once i put a 3D game, when i exit the game the gpu doesnt change and stays at 515mhz.
any sugestions?? -
Uh, does PowerMizer have explicit clock settings? PowerMizer is a driver option, not a RivaTuner option. For me it has three profiles, Power Saving, Balanced, and HighPerformance. The clocks increase from left to right.
Also don't you have an NVIDIA GPU? What's with the ATI tool then? -
I don't like switching the resolution to a non-widescreen ratio because it then stretches the image -
Because comparing results is easier when you know your mate has tested his laptop on the same resolution. You may want to test on 1680x1050 and get 3000pts, but how will you compare that to one that has tested at 1440x900 (because he can't go further)

IdontFreakinKNow Notebook Enthusiast
can you use 3d mark offline?? ive never tested it and i wonder what mine is at.

i got 6000 with no gpu overclock

Stop lying , ****ing dumbass ! -
IdontFreakinKNow Notebook Enthusiast
well i did it online and thats the score it gave me. im not lying about it. i dont know if thats accurate or not. everyone else told me to download it and run it. so apparently theres a difference i guess.

Hi,
Planning to purchase Asus G1SN with the following specs
Intel Core 2 Duo T9300
Intel Pro/Wireless 3965AGN Network Card
15.4" WXGA
Nvidia GeForceGo 9500MG VRAM 512MB
Window Vista Ultimate + Window XP Professional
4GB Mushkin Memory
1GB Turbo Memory
320GB Hard Disk 5400RPM
DVD Super Multi Lightscribe
Card Reader, Bluetooth, Webcam, E-SATA, HDMI
2 Year Limited Global Warranty + 3rd Year Warranty
Comes free with Asus Xonar external sound card and Asus TV Tuner
I am from Malaysia
How is the specification? -
I think great, even if the HDD is 5200rpm (which some consider slow).
-
Is the 9500 Gddr3 or 2? If possible I'd always go with the gddr3 variants!
-
I think it is GDDR 2
Look Here:

Yeah it's native for G1S, but most of the tests you'll see anywhere use 1280x1024, maybe because all you need to do is press the "Benchmark" button and wait 10 minutes. Oh, and many people are still using 1280x1024 desktop monitors so it's easier to compare with them
-
Im starting to think we should run all the tests in 1024*768 simply because the people who has the 1440*900 screen cant run the test in 1280*1024.
Their own fault for buying the wrong screen xD
but seriously, maybe we should?
Oh and i think its so fun every time someone comes with a new OC that has a incredible magic performance that crushes any other OC, then you see he has a 2.7 ghz CPU and runs the test in the wrong resolution xD
(2.7 ghz scores 600 points more then the 2,2 and the resolution just makes it completely worthless xD) -
wow 2 post for the winzors - deleted this one.
-
I agree, that's the reason I do both tests on 1280x1024 and 1024x768 (I'm comparing with a friend that has the 1440x900 screen version).
Also agree with processor scoring, yeah it does score more, but I watch most of the games on my OLED screen, most of them (Crysis, Call of Duty 4...) run with less than 60% CPU utilization (I'm watching both cores btw), for except some games that have tons of CPU postprocessing (like Assassin's Creed - 96% core 1 and 85% core 2 all the time!). Still, CPU is not holding fps counter down much, I'm using the 2.4GHz T7700, when I stick the CPU to 1.4GHz instead of 2.4GHz (on Maximum performance with RMClock), I get 4-5% less average fps in Call of Duty 4 and Crysis. -
Ok, maybe some of you could shed some light on my main issue. I have an "older" G1 (C2D T7200, Go7700 3gb RAM, 100gb HD) and as of now the only game I play is World of Warcraft. According to System Requirements Lab and various other sites I exceed the recommended system requirements to play the game and have a nice time playing it. However, I have the graphical settings at their highest, and a resolution of 1152x864, not that high (I think anyway) and I only average about 30 or so FPS. I haven't overclocked my GPU at all, nor done anything to the proc. because I was nervous of overheating. I did however, add another GB of RAM to make it 3, to compensate for Vista's memory hogging-ness. Anyone have any ideas on what I could do to make my performance better, or am I stuck with what I have now.
-
Please note that "recommended system requirement" does not mean you can run at maximum settings with maximum framerates. For example, my PC exceeds Crysis's "recommended system specification", yet can only average about 30FPS on medium to low settings.
There are somethings you can do to improve performance.
1. Remove redundant system service
2. Close off unused programs
3. Install Windows XP, or Windows Vista 64bit.
4. Find the optimal settings for WoW.
