I have a quick question, are temperatures of 96-100 degrees too high for the Video Card, or am I in a good range?

I have a small problem. I have a G1s-A1 with stock Vista. The battery life is minimal. However that isn't the issue. The problem occurs when I let the battery drain out. When I do so, the machine won't restart even if I have plugged in AC power. I have to press and hold the power button for 4 seconds before there is any activity.

Is there any explanation for this?

Has anybody already used the zalman notebook cooler with the G1S??
I wanted to buy it to reduce my temperature (of the 8600M GT in my G1S) but i have read that it doesn't help with the Asus G1S? :s

I just got my Zalman cooler from newegg yesterday. I'm still installing games, apps, and files on my G1S-B2 so I have no idea if it helps yet. I plan to test it out later this week.

BTW, what are the best drivers for Crysis, Bioshock, Steam, etc? I'm trying to decide if I should go with the 169.09 or a different one.

Newest ones. You should typically always go for the newest ones off of Laptopvideo2go.com

I would believe those are a little bit on the higher side. I would think mid 80s are good temperatures.

Really depends. Mileage varies for different people. For me the 169.21 drivers are better than 169.25, in terms of FPS...
Try the drivers yourself and go with the one which seems to give you the better performance..

I feel like I'm being followed by a mob of people who want G1SA1s. Everywhere I go, it's sold out. I finally found zipzoomfly to carry it (and be cheap) but they just sent me an email canceling my order saying they were sold out too! What!?

    I just got a G1S from newegg.com for $1499.99 on the 18th of December.

As far as I know, they still have many in stock!

    Good luck!

Then you bought the last one. On the morning of the 18th, they had them in stock. When I came home from school to order, they were now out of stock. :(

Congratulations on beating me to it :p

Just finished checking out my new Zalman ZM-NC1000 cooler with O/C, here are a few stats:
O/C'ed at 594 Core Clock 783 Memory Clock.

Temp idle: 63-64c (72-72c on my LCD 32")
Temp full load (3dmark06 test): 89c max (while on LCD screen)

And for 3dmark06 score: (while on notebook screen)

Using 169.25 drivers and RivaTuner 2.06.

Here is also a few CPU temps while running PCMark05:

    Idle: 55-56c
    Full load: 71c max

    648/848, that's a BIG overclock :D
And it looks like the zalman cooler helps :)

When i overclock that high without the zalman cooler my temperature of the GPU gets up to 96 °C or even more ...

So i can't until my zalman cooler arrives next week ^^

    That's really great!!! :)

You know? I'm having a hard time installing custom Vista drivers from Laptop2go, they all fail to install. I think I'm installing desktop video drivers.

Can you post a direct link to a driver (like the aforementioned 169.25)?

    TIA!

Your not using a custom .inf file for the driver that's why. Download the .inf files from laptopvideo2go.com

i have had my G1S for about two weeks now and love it! but having a problem with it detecting my network, or any network for that matter!

i had a old (6-7 years) linksys WRK54G with just one antenna and sometimes the laptop found my network right after boot up, but usually took 10-15 mins, and sometimes not @ all, i would have to restart the laptop and 10 mins later it would find it :(

so i thought maybe it was the router, so i got the linksys WRT300N router today from best buy to take advantage of the N network that the laptop supports, but still it takes forever to find my network, and I'm sitting 3 feet from the router?!?!

do i have a faulty network card?

Have you tried to find an updated driver for the wifi card?

I really doubt there's a problem with the wifi module.

Another thing you can try is to disable it and re-enable it to see if it connects (you don't have to perform the whole reboot procedure).

Also try to use some other wifi connection method like BOINGO's connection client.

As a last resort and to verify if your wifi module is fine I would suggest you to download some Live Linux distro like UBUNTU and boot to it's desktop from the CD (you don't have to install or destroy your current OS), that way you can test your wifi module and see if it connects with no problems.

    Good luck!

Seems like whenever I try to O/C over 648/848 the display driver crashes.
Tried to do so with 169.09, 169.25 and 169.28.

Going to order my Asus G1S at the coming week.
Dont know so mutch about laptop hardware but i found this one at my favoritte webshop:

    ASUS G1S 15.4"WSXGA+,Go 8600M,Core 2 Duo T7700,2 GB RAM,250GB HDD,DVD±RW,WLAN/BT,VU

In my eyes it looks like you cant go any higher on CPU atleast.

It looks like its the AK111G revision. I got no clue what that means :)

Is it possible to upgrade the ram to 4 gig without breaking the warranty. And is there any offical drivers for X64 Vista?

Hi folks- I would be grateful for any suggestions on the following problem. Asus G1S running Vista home premium connected to my home network with 2 desktops running XP and a Buffalo Linkstation. When I have a cable attached to the laptop, I can see the desktops and explore the folders. When I use the wireless connection (Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN) I can access the internet, and see icons for the desktops and linkstation but cannot open any of the folders. The little green bar at the top of the window takes a minute or two while searching, then a message comes up saying folder not found or you do not have access to this resource.
The wireless connection is set as private network, file and pint sharing is turned on. With a network cable I do get complete access. Any thoughts?

That's a really nice G1S, processor is better then my T7500 :p (but you aren't gone notice much of the little extra speed ;) )
250GB HDD is really nice and the rest are the same specs I guess.
Upgrading to 4GB is no problem but then you have to install vista x64 ;) And yes there are official vista 64 bit drivers on the G1S download page of Asus

EDIT: And my desktop computer got 5226 on 3dmark06, so if i overclock abit then i wont even be downgrading? :p

so far I've enjoyed my g1s a1. Still, maybe I should have added another gig of ram? If I leave the laptop on or in sleep mode after extended use, my games get stuttery and I need to initiate a full restart to get my games running normal again. Is that something with hardware or is it Vista?

Could be a heat problem by the sounds of it. The G1S does get hot (as its known for) and adding an extra gig will improve performance but sounds more like a heat problem.

The G1s has ddr3. One of the few NB with the 8600GT which has. Use Everest ore Sandra lite to see all the specifications.

Every time I turn on my eSATA drive to my G1S, Vista freezes for a bit, say 10 seconds, and then I get the error that my display driver failed but has recovered. At most this seems like just a little annoyance more then anything else since my eSATA drive works and I see no performance decrease when pushing the video card.

I'm running Vista Home Premium 32-bit with Forceware driver 163.11. My eSATA drive is a 500gb WD drive in a Vantec NexStar enclosure.

I did download and install the latest eSATA drivers from Asus site. Just wondering if any one else has this issue or knows why the eSATA would effect the video driver?

    Thanks.

I'm having a really annoying problem on my G1S and this has been happening for quite a while. Like 75% of the time I try to run the built-in webcam, my pc freezes and I can't do anything but turn it of manually. I haven't installed any third party software or anything for the webcam. I also don't use the Asus update thingy coz it messed up my pc last time and I had to format it. Any suggestions on fixing this?

    Hello good people.
I believe that i will be joining you in being a part of the happiest crowd - the G1S crowd. I placed an order for my G1S-B2 yesterday at noon through Canada Computers (hit or miss in terms of service so fingers are crossed) and therefore i should be able to get my hands on it sometime after wednesday next week (if all goes well). The machine, with all delivery, taxes (oh canadian taxes, you are the epidemy of evil straight from hell),and extended 3 year warranty came up to CAD $2234 ($1834 base price).
Any advice on what i should do with it as soon as i turn the thing on? eg. delete bloatware, refresh drivers???

i used both and both just tell me that its the 8600GT, but doesn't say anything about it being a DDR 2 or DDR 3?!?!

the reason I'm i want to make sure is because i got the laptop in the beginning of Dec 07 and from newegg. well when i purchased mine, it didn't say anything under the "title" about it, and now if u look @ the site, it says, "Pre-installed DDRIII VRAM"

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220182

so i just wanted some clarification that i do have DDR 3

DDR 3 has a stock memory clock of 700 MHz (effective 1400) DDR 2 has 400 MHz (effective 800). You can check it with cpuZ

The RAM is DDR2 but I can't tell if the 8600GT is ddr2 or ddr3. CPU-Z only tells me the regular ram.

Sorry, my fault. Wrong program, use Everest it will tell the clocking of the 8600M GT. If it clocks at 700MHz it is DDR3. But i have not heard about a G1S with DDR2. Normally it is combination with 512 RAM.

So got my G1S-B2 today. Been installing updates and all sorts of stuff on it for the past 4 hours. First time i booted it, a window popped up telling me that windows cant start. lol. selected "normal boot" and it went through.

I cant tell much about anything yet except for the fact that the notebook is built like a tank... but the cannon is lacking. The screen is absolutely magnificent. The overall design and feel of the lappie definately blows my old one out of the water. Its also able to handle: several applications updating, internet radio via itunes playing, internet surfing, messeging, installing a game and running a virus scan all at the same time with no delays... :)

There isnt too much useless Asus soft installed. Most of it i will find use for at some point i think...

Never having to deal with Vista before in my life im rather pleased with the way its set up (intuitive but kind of too simple) but if it asks me permission for something again i think im gonna take away its lunch money...

As soon as all the updating is out of the way i will run COD4 Demo and see how this thing deals with what its built for.

hmmm... amazing computer - COD4 Demo running at max resolution with 2x AA and Tri Anisotropic Filtering with everythign set to high = very enjoyable.

for some reason internet died out on me for a couple of hours but then got back on... maybe a network issue rather than anything else.

I definately like this so far :) although XP would have been nicer.

If your using wireless network then make sure to uninstall the ASUS bluetooth/wifi program (can't remember the name).
For some reason it used to crash my connection to the router alot of times.

Hi all!! I just got my brand new ASUS G1S...not sure about the exact serial number, but its the T7500 with 2 GB RAM and 250 GB HDD...I added another 1 GB to it after I bought it...I'm going to be installing Oblivion on it sometime this weekend to give it a test run...mostly because I was playing this on my old laptop (P4 3 GHz, 1 GB RAM & Radeon 9800 256 MB) and I want to see the contrast so I get a feel for this thing's power.

    A few questions:

Where do I get Windows XP drivers for this laptop?? I have a copy of Windows XP SP2 which I am planning on loading on a second partition for gaming...in Vista it takes a huge hit! :(

How exactly do I OC my graphics card?? Are there any guides or tips for doing this that I can read before I attempt? Should I even bother?? I'm thinking about this for playing Bioshock, Colin McRae's DiRT and maybe Crysis...

I use Rivatuner to overclock the GPU and VRAM, I don't even touch the CPU.

    This is brilliant, thanks!

I've spent the last couple of weeks looking for a new laptop to replace my old Inspiron 8200, with a few prerequisites:
    - must have a screen at least as good (currently 1600x1200 with good contrast and accurate colour)
    - must run XP, I'm not interested in Vista at all. Too many horror stories and I can't abide the idea of an OS with DRM so firmly at its core
    - must also run Ubuntu, which is my everyday OS.

It's amazing how difficult it is to find a machine that will definitely meet these (I'd have thought) pretty basic needs, but I'm hoping that the G1S is it. I'm annoyed at having ended up with a copy of Vista anyway, but once I've archived the system restore partition I'll just wipe the whole drive and set it up how I want it.

The machine should be here in a couple of days - I'm downloading all the XP drivers now ready!!

I own an Asus G1p (the first one) and have problems with the optical drive..do you know if i can just buy something like this?

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827152073

should i better claim my warranty?

does installing a new optical drive void my warranty on the rest of my laptop?

    Thx in advance ^^ :)

    Hi Vlad_I:

I was wondering if you could tell me who manufactured LCD panel in your B2? I believe it's noted under Device Manager>Monitor and then in the Details tab under Hardware ID.

I'm very pleased to hear that you think the screen on your B2 is magnificent. I have seen on a few other posts where some of the G1S screens at the WSXGA+ resolution were described as being sparkly or grainy.

I just sent back an XPS system to Dell with the "sparkly" screen problem (made by Samsung) and I am now seriously considering ordering a G1S-B2. I would hate to see it arrive with the same problem.

If any other G1S-B2 owners care to look, I would be really interested to see if they all come from the same manufacturer or not!

    Thanks
