do the 169.09 drivers work for the G1S? i wasnt sure and ive only updated mine to 165.01.

I was running cod4 demo and it seems to run great! however i was disappointed once i saw the # of frames per second i was getting. But if i switch everything on off/low and at 800x600 i can get a staggering 120 fps average!!! great laptop :)

Must say this laptop is great. i cant believe i finally got mine just last week. i thought it wouldnt be the end of my whole getting a laptop problems as i am usually pretty unlucky with big purchases. i love everything about this laptop except for the speakers, but it isnt a big deal for me anyhow.

Uh, all drivers work with a custom .INF file also downloaded from the same site as the drivers. Also, I'm able to run CoD4 at 1440x968 (the widescreen one..) at max settings with playable FPS... So you should turn your Rez up.

Really? I have a G1S-A1 and I can barely run Crysis. It's really annoying. I updated the drivers and it still runs a little below 20 fps when most of the settings are low. It looks worse than Far Cry!

That's odd... because most people can on a G1s with respectable settings from medium to high...? What drivers are you using (Use 164.09)? The new ones are designed to work better with Crysis... Also, is your notebook overheating maybe? How many processes are going on at the same time?

A word of caution to people who are planning to buy a new G1s-A1.

There seem to be a lot of websites offering the laptop for lesser than $1600. See the price of the Asus G1 in the table "Popular Asus Laptops" to the left.

I checked out the config and the video RAM being used is listed as DDR2. So in effect it becomes another Sager NP2090, gaming-wise.

I just thought I'd warn people so that they can look for such 'gotchas' before they make their final purchase.

'Playable' is one thing, good fps for online play is another.

Yes the high resolutions are 'playable' but i only get around 20fps. that isnt going to be any use to me when im playing online. online, the more fps, the better.

The website I got it from says the video ram is DDR3. I'm using the 169.04 drivers. I'll try upgrading again to the 9 driver.

Their listings are wrong... you can buy a G1s at lower than $1600... At least on sale, remember that zipzoomfly.com promo? All G1s'/G2s' are DD3...

i was under the impression that all of the g1's were dd3 as well

and yeah - you can get good deals on them - i actually just purchased mine on clearance at best buy over this past weekend (i got the x-1 which has a t7300 processor - they put them on clearance to make room for the x-3 with a t7500 processor) - i paid $1136.99 + tax (just under $1240 total out-the-door)

I updated to the 169.09 drivers and saw a major increase in performance. It wasn't quite at the level of online playability but I got around 20 with everything on Med and 1024x768.

Is there any reason to get Vista 64-bit unless you have more than 4 gigs of ram? Does it give any kind of performance increase or better features?

Does anyone know the complete RAM name, speed, type etc. etc. of the G1 (I have to first version with the go7700, if that helps). I know its DDR2 667 but is that all I would need to know if I were to be shopping for a memory upgrade? Or is this even possible?

I think that's all you need to know. Keep in mind that the g1s only has two slots. I made the stupid mistake of buying another 1 gig and finding there was no more room.

Has anyone tried overclocking the g1s? What program and settings did you use? Was it still stable?

Read the G1s Resource Thread. And yes, the new drivers are stable when overclocking. Use Riva Tuner

Ok I found this RAM stick, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220229

and I was wondering if that will fit in my G1 memory slot? I worry because I popped open the area where the RAM is stored and those sticks are awfully small. Maybe I'm just used to desktop RAM and its size compared to laptop RAM. So will that RAM work for my laptop?

Hey guys jus bought a G1S and im a bit worried about the temps i get on it,on ntune it says the average temps is 70 celcius, is that normal?

Also on Speedfan it says my GPU temps is 50 celcius so im kind of confused on which one to beleive.

    Dumb question. Well, two questions.

    1. On my new G1S, how do I go about changing which mail and internet clients the hot-buttons open?
    2. Is there anyway besides the simple Asus program to change what the LCD displays? Like CPU temp info, etc?

    2. Do you mean the LED? Not that I know of.

    What is the problem?

I have tried these drivers: 156.75, 163.44, 165.01, 169.01, 169.04, 169.09, 169.12 and my best 3dmark06 score is only 3338. I've been reading that normally people get around 3800 without oc.
On load my gpu temp rises 98c and what I've read its pretty average temperature. Couple weeks ago I sent my laptop to asus and they send it back (no repair needed). So the problem isnt hardware. I hope only some of my settings are in disorder etc.

    specs: g1s: t7500, 2gb ram, 8600m gt ddr3 256, hd 5400.

gentlemen, help me find solution so I can get my g1s work as it normally would.

Hey There! New guy here! Just need some advice. I just ordered my G1s from ZipZoomFly.com and added the 2GB Dimm they advertised with it. I just want to find out if the G1s comes standard with 1x2Gb Dimm, or 2x1Gd Dimm's. I know it's only got 2 memory slots and just want to figure out if I'm now going to have 3Gb RAM (Because I'll have to take one 1Gb Dimm out) or 4Gb RAM. Any advice will be appreciated...

Eesh, been in the same boat here for a while, but I am actually getting 3800+ in 3dmark 06. Have you tried running the notebook on a cooler/running 3dmark when everything is still cool? Believe it or not, even though a few people (myself included) are getting high 90 temps, it seems that it is not the norm, and not so healthy. At any rate it sucks to hear that they sent it back. I have done alot of different things so far to get my GPU to perform more consistently and at a lower temp, at this point I have run out of ideas and was about ready to RMA it, shame to know they will probably just send it back :(

Sorry for the double post, but as far as I know USB, (nice name) the notebook ships with 2x1GB SODIMMs, so if they are adding a 1x2GB SODIMM, you will most likely have 3GB all together. Not really a big deal anyways, unless you are planning on running a 64bit OS anytime soon.

    Hey need4speed210

Actually I made mistake saying that there wasnt repair needed. I checked papers and there read.
    Problem: fan ERROR
    Repair result: reassemby / recorrection

I noticed that on idle my temps are 70c and thats improvement what I used to have, so something has happened. And yes, I tried 3dmark this morning when I woke up. It gave me 34xx and max temp was under 90c.

But I still need to figure out what is wrong. Why wont I get +3800 with modded forceware drivers? What should I do? Do I have settings just ****ed up? Im frustrated

Have you removed all of your bloatware and done away with all your unneeded processes? Also did you update your DirectX drivers? For the record im running 169.04, which sounds like the happy medium for an 8600m GT right now. Another thing you might want to try out is disabling the thermal monitor through the process listed here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=169410

edit: maybe there is hope for me after all.

^ try reinstalling the stock drivers - im sure you have before - but just recently i reinstalled 169.04 (after 169.09 didnt work out that well for me) - and everything was fine - 3900+ scores - i was happy

then i messed with a few settings - i fudged something because no matter what, i couldnt get higher than 3500+ 06 scores - i reinstalled the 169.04 driver again and everything seems to be back to normal

i dunno - worse comes to worse - maybe try a clean install of vista? maybe theres something else in the mix that no one might even think about

and if you havent done it before - i think its a great idea to speed up the overall performance of the machine...

I've tried stock drivers that came in a cd with my g1s and those drivers give me around 3000points in 3dmark06. And as I mentioned I've tested these drivers many times: 156.75, 163.44, 165.01, 169.01, 169.04, 169.09, 169.12

EDIT: Did those rmcpu things but no help at all. Should I use recover cd that came with my g1s? reinstall vista?

just a quick question. If I install Kaspersky Anti-virus (the newest one) on 1 comp. but then get a new laptop, can I install it on that new one or will it only work on my old G1S.

    thanks,

Thanks for the reply! Can you tell me if there is any real advantage in running a 64bit OS at this stage? I mainly use my computer for office work, games, music, movies and the like. Is the Vista Home Premium that comes with it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Hi everyone I just took the plunge and brought a G1s-A1 from excaliberpc.com. I took the offer with includes the free ram upgrade. So in total I should have 3gb of RAM. I'm planning to install Windows XP on it. (32 bit). Will have 3gb of ram effect my installation of windows XP? Will 3gb effect my performance on windows xp because they are not on dual channel?

Windows XP will run perfectly with 3GB of ram. Also, the performance loss from dual-channel will be unnoticeable, i wouldn't stress over it that much. :)

Hmm....you shouldn't have to disable anything for G1s when installing Windows XP. I do know that you have to manually install some drivers with "Have disk" method in order to get everything working, but you shouldn't have to disable anything. Then again, I installed XP a long time ago on my G1s, so keep Chronus' advice in mind as well.

I'm ordering the G1S-B2 tomorrow and was wondering if I should buy a copy of XP. Is Vista really that bad for gaming? I'm getting the laptop mainly for gaming/movies while I'm on trips for work. I plan to play games ranging from Diablo II to Crysis. Performance and compatibility are what's important to me. I don't care about DX10 either.

I would recommend testing out Vista first before purchasing a license for XP. This way you can find out whether the games you want to play are supported or not.

Personally, I think G1s is more suited for Vista than XP.

Im giving up... Still getting under 3000points in 3dmark06 with every fu**ing driver. I have sent my laptop to asus and they fixed fan. Last night I did system restore - didnt help. With 169.12 I get 2600points. I have tried tweaking vista and 8600m gt but none of these wont help. I dont know anymore what to do.

    What are the prices?

The B1 does come with the very nice Hitachi 200GB 7,200 RPM drive. That drive costs about $200 by itself. If the B1 is within $200 of the A1, it is probably worth the upgrade.
