The portability is great... of course if your sitting on a small desk then you could have problems. But, as long as your close to a wall plug and if you enough desk space, then go for it. I haven't had too many problems yet.

I got mine 2 weeks ago and i bring mine to school every single day and its been good till now, it runs about 2:10 on battery, so if you plan on being on it for long youll have to be plugged in, but im really happy with it! :) also when i put the laptop in or take out of the bag, i always fold over the zipper so i dont scratch it lol :D

Yes, but you would have to do that before turning the computer off so it won't make that noise.... Er, actually I thought it always made that noise no matter what settings the sound was on?

    Hi guys,
    Just ordered my Asus G1S!
I cant wait to have it...
seeing how hot it can get, i was thinking of underclocking the video card...
the fanciest game i play is UT2004, i think, even underclocked the card could take it, no?
Did some of you try it?, i would be interested to know what effect it has on temperature, battery life and noise...

    :D

Well.. there's not much of a reason to downclock, as who wouldn't want to play their games at full rez with everything on? The battery life won't be too affected anyway. You can undervolt the CPU WHICH i highly suggest as it makes the laptop much cooler.

And why would you buy this laptop if not for gaming?!?

I got my G1S a while ago... i entirely fell in love with it... However, while experimenting with the bootloader, i ran into a problem, anyway, i ended up doing an install from the recovery cd / support cd... works well again... exept for some of my hot keys...

the only ones that work are the FN +F5, F6, Fand F... other than that... FN
+F10, F11, F12, all the media buttons, and the four buttons beside the power key do not work. I have gone to the asus website, and installed / re-installed the ATK Hotkey driver... but it did nothing advantageous of my situation.

ANY and ALL help greatly appreciated!!! its not a major problem, but it is annoying that i cnt play with all the functions of my beautiful lappy :p

Mostly, for digital painting...with the lappy plugged into a 24 inch screen at 1920x1200...
I like gaming occasionally when i travel (for hardcore gaming i have my desktop)...

i wanted to downclock simply because it's seem to be the hottest part....

aah, i'll see how the temperatures are when i get it....which is supposed to be today :D

The GPU Idle temps are not bad at all... any you'll need it the GPU power when your painting at 1920x1200....

    Well i received the lappy...

    First impressions..gorgeous!
the back pack is very nice also!

After removing bloatware: here is my vista score index:
    CPU 5.1
    RAM 4.7
    Graphics 5.9/5.5
    HD 5.2

I was surprised to have a 5.2 in HD as i only have a 5400RPM...maybe it's the intel turbo memory...

    So far it's very reactive.

it's on since 2 hours and the temperature so far are:
    GPU: 69 C
    CPU: 66 C

not as high as i thought...

there is one thing bothering me though: the noise!!!!!
    the HD is clearly audible...
    and the fan likewise...
I believe I detected 3 steps in the fan regime...
most of the time when doing random things it's on step 2, and it's noisy...
step 3 needs to be covered by some other noises because it's very disturbing...

maybe I ask too much giving what's inside the laptop. But I'm really disappointed by this.

EDIT: nice screen, love the high resolution, but quite noticeable light bleeding coming from the bottom....

The idle temps are kinda high. I'd suggest undervolting the CPU a bit to get some lower temps... I was able to get mine to hover around 50-60.

Im getting a g1s-a1 very very soon. with 5400rpm HDD.
I think the HDD speed will be a limiting factor on performance.
Does anyone know if it is possible to set up an external SATA HDD in RAID 0?
if that is doable, it will probably negate the effects of the slower HDD.
    appreciate any input

Then, I'm not so sure... You could call Asus or your retailer just to check if you do it yourself if it'll void your warrenty

From my experience in the past dealing with Lenovo and Dell, I've upgraded numerous laptops at work with memory and hard-drive and still got support on them (on-site repairs etc.) with no questions asked. All I had to do was to make sure that the upgraded hdd and memory were giving me the same issues as the original ones. When the tech came on-site, I would simply have everything switched back to original configuration.

I'm pretty sure you will not void your warranty if you upgarde RAM and Hard drive yourself. I need to do some researching at Asus' website to find out for sure though.

    Can someone else confirm?

I'm about to pull the trigger on a G1s! My only worry is that it looks too much like a gaming rig. I'll surely use it for some light/moderate gaming but I also need to hook it up to a projector so that I can give presentations (powerpoint, etc). Do any of you think that this machine would be out of place on a podium in a nice, big conference room? I'm mostly worried about the green lights (which I understand can be disabled) since nobody will be able to see the "gaming eye" thing. What if I paint the light covers black? Think it would look "business" enough to a room of people who don't really know much about computers?

If you turn off the gaming lights, they just look like dull green stripes on the side of the LCD casing. They really don't look any different than the decoration patterns on most notebooks. On the other hand, the G1s is quite large for a 15.4" notebook. I have been teased about mine at the office not because of the game look (which is actually fairly subtle) but just because of the size. Nonetheless, the G1s does make a very nice business notebook as long as you don't need battery life much beyond 2 hours or ultra light weight and small size.

Upgrading your HD does not void your warranty. Only messing with your cpu does.

same battery, same notebook (other then cpu and hdd), same battery life. if anything the itm module should make it more efficient but until ssd drives come out robson remains relatively ineffective

Proud soon to be owner of an asus G1S here, I saw it at btotech for $1600 and I couldnt pass it up.Anyways it's an easy decision with all the great reviews on here and through newegg not to mention the great community support for this notebook.I guess all I need now is a very small set of portable USB speakers, with descent bass and I will bet set, anyone know of any ).

yes it is possible, you just have to repartition the hard drive with one for windows and one for the other. there are some threads lying around here about how to do it.

does anyone know if its possible, to make it one big hard drive instead of partitioned, i find it really annoying to having to switch where i save stuff all the time, and are there any advantages to leaving it partitioned?

Yes... IE, you want to re-install Windows... You can just replace the OS partition, and leave the Data one. That means, your data is still there after you delete the OS partition. Also, some say performance is better... But, I just re-installed Vista on mine, the recovery CD gives you options to format your HD. One of them is just a single large partition. (comes out to like 148 gigs or something..)

i actually didnt have to re-install anything - i just used the partition manager in vista - i deleted the d: partition, and then extended the c partition to include everything left over - i left the 6 gig partition alone (so my c: drive is 142 gigs)

i gotta say - i am EXTREMELY impressed with this notebook - the screen is just gorgeous - its taking me a little time to get used to vista (i just got the thing friday nite) but its coming along

i just ran the basic version of 3dmark06 and scored a 3656 - which i think is pretty incredible considering the thing is bone stock - im gonna download 3dmark05 and check that out as well

EDIT - i just ran 3dmark05 - scored a 7413 - thats unbelievable for an $1100 laptop! im so stoked!
