Hey I just got my G1S today and I was wondering what's the BIOS version on it? I didn't really get a chance to open it or get rid of those covers, stickers, protectors on the laptop, it's fresh out of the box :)

edit: I am at work right now

hey guys, i got some computer guy over and he installed symantec anti-virus corporate edition on my computer. Is that the same as Norton and will it affect performance drastically?

Same company, better product. I stay clear of symantec these days but a couple of friends of mine are running the corporate version and it runs fine.

thanks, so im guessing it won't increase boot up time or slow the comp. that much right. I'm reading about 7% increase in RAM when idle. from 32-39ish.

Norton is a piece of shi*. In my case it strated blocking some ports like 80( http), after, 21 ( ftp), 453(skype) etcetc, Vista firewall was not able to open again this ports In addition it was analysing every file i wanted to be opened. I think it works better without it.

you should remove it on order to avoid some futur surprises.

Another vote for NOD32, it is the finest antivirus available. For firewalls, the Comodo Firewall Professional 3 beta is highly powerful and secure, which is what I use under XP. It caused my Vista install to have issues, however.

I use Kaspersky Security Suite. It is a powerful av program and there no issues with Vista that i know of. In the beginning it did slow down my broadband connection but with a small tweak it preforms like it should. You don´t notice it and keeps my computer safe.

I'm running Kaspersky IS7 in my computer.

    Very satisfied with KIS7.

Also before you install KIS or KAV in your PC totally remove Norton on your PC by using Norton remover (not just uninstall in control panel)

question.....why did my WEI rating for RAM go down when i upgraded from 2 GB to 3 GB?

it only dropped from 4.8 to 4.7...but shouldn't it have gone up?

What's with the little blotches appearing on the back of the lid that look like microscopic scratches? I've never put anything hard against this thing (i mean i'm even careful when taking it out of the bag to make sure the plastic zippers don't touch it ...) but somehow there are these little blotches on there now that can't be wiped off.. anyone else having the same problem?

That is because it's not running at dual channel mine get 4.8.
It's memory calculation per second not the total.

hey guys, mentioned this before but got no reply and i'm pretty sure you guys know. What are the best drivers out for the GPU right now and how do I download them, as I remember from before that it isn't just download and install? As well, will overclocking the GPU reduce battery life? and how much of a performance increase will I expect from installing the drivers and the performance increase with drivers and overclock.
    thanks guys

I was wondering if others are having problems playing newer games. I've tried playing world in conflict and DiRT (both pirated copies) and they run real slow and choppy when I put the graphic settings at all high which this comp should easily handle. I was wondering if its cause of the realtek soundcard which can't support the sound on these games - I hear a lot of sound gliches while I play. Could this also be the reason why I get really bad score in 3dmark05 (1800 has been my best one while people keep reporting they've gotten 7700). By the way I'm really disappointed in my asus g1s and I wouldn't recommened it to anyone main reasons being - VISTA SUCKS! (all my programs from adobe, rhino, maya, and AutoCAD don't work (had to get the latests versions and those are still glichy) as well as the cd burning software on vista crashes my computer) I'm not computer smart enough to try to install xp and risk ruining the comp, sound is god awful, my dvd driver is messed up (takes like 3 hours to install a game), may have heat issues in the future, screen is grainy. Just had to let ya'll know my experience...

sounds like you might've gotten a lemon G1S, see if you can get another one. For me and I'm sure with many others, their G1S is fine and working well. 3Dmark should be at about 3600 stock

also, can anyone answer my question from the last page??

Now, I can only speak for World in Conflict, but at high settings, yes the G1S is going to jump. It is a hardcore game with DX10 (when you select Very High settings it enables DX10) and the G1S is not a desktop. It, for me as well, jumps around at high settings, i was getting (if i remember correctly) about 7-12 fps on Very High.

Proud new owner of a G1S here 8) Was eyeing different laptops for a while including C90S, Sager 2090, Dell Inspiron 1520, and Vostro 1500. Went to check out the prices a couple days ago and noticed the G1S dropped nearly $200 at a local computer store (authorized ASUS retailer).. and the rest was history. Loving it so far 8)

does anyone know what the price of a 2GB RAM (cheapest one, one that won't die on me) would cost that would work for the G1S, and how much of a resale value could I get for that extra piece of 1GB RAM that came with it.

I don't think you can get it to "go" away. But if you check the G1s Resource Threat, you'll see there's a method to turn off the Sound. IE, press F2 while booting up to get to the BIOs screen, from there just turn off the Post Sound Option

Hi everyone. I am about to buy an Asus G1s-A1, and my question is whether or not its worth $120 to upgrade form the 5400rpm HD to the 7200rpm one? My main reason for choosing this laptop is that I want to be able to play Oblivion as well as possible, yet affordably. What kind of impact would this upgrade have, and would it be worth the money?

Also, on Newegg.com, with the description of this computer, it says "Pre-installed DDRIII Ram." Anyone know what this means? I know what DDR3 is and all, but when I look at the computer's Specs, under ram, it just lists DDR2.

HD upgrades will show a difference only in those tasks that require HD access and use, i.e. load times, photo editing, encoding. 7200 drives generate more heat, and eat battery faster than their 5400 counterparts, so expect the consequences of those issues. Whether these are worth it to you, that's a decision you'll make.

The Newegg reference says DDR3 VRAM, not RAM. That means that the gpu is updated to the ddr3 version of the 8600GT. DDR3 memory sticks only exist in desktop format at the current time, AFAIK.

ddr3 is the built in version on the vga card. 8600 comes either with ddr2 or ddr3. g1s has ddr3 which is better
hard drives has no effect on fps in a game what so ever. the vga card is responsible for most of the in game performance. cpu and system ram do too in a small degree.

I found a USB power leak on one of my port. If you look from behind from left, it's the second row, top. I'am using Zalman NC1000 and even if I shutdown, I'am still be able to switch on the notebook cooler. If I plug-in my USB MP3 player, it would charging it up.

However, other 3 ports are o.k. If the notebook is shutdown, so as the power.

Could someone rectify this for me? Or it just my G1S has problem...?

Problem solved as the port was intentionally left to leak power by ASUS as stated in the manual.

One more question everyone. how does the Asus G1s-A1 stand up to portability? Weight doesn't matter to me, but I take my laptop to school every day, and so i need to know how structurally sound it is. If it isn't all that great, if anyone could recommend certain safety measures I could take for it, that'd be great.
