You open it up, remove the current CPU and drop the new one in. You'll void your warranty though.

You could just save the processor and throw it back in when you send if for repairs. But changing it is fairly simple.

So it has no OS? What did you put on?

Theres a sticker that is covering one of the screws that holds the heatsink in (and the processer in turn). If the sticker is gone, your warranty is void. I opened mine up, and it wasn't stuck to the screw at all... so I moved it to where it should have been. I take no chances with warranties, lol.

If for some reason you can justify the loss of coverage, and the substantial cost to upgrade to a t7700 (or above), feel free. It won't give you the same performance increase that you are expecting though.

Yup, the G1 supports MXM, which is kinda like the "AGP" slot of the notebook world.

Oh really? I thought the C90 was the only one with MXM, COOL! Glad to know we aren't missing out.

On another note, I have been using my G1S for a week now, it has been through about 5 different os installs as I change my mind between just vista, just XP, and dual boot (Finally settled on just XP until SP1 for vista comes out, at least...) and all I can say is it is a gorgeous piece of engineering. Beautiful beautiful design and execution. It's super fast and everything just feels quality. Yes there is some flex in certain parts of the screen assembly and underneath near the edges a bit near the cdrom etc, but it's not bad at all. And did I mention it looks AWESOME and performs AWESOME? Nuff Said.

I bought the G1S-X1 from Best Buy two days ago and I was wondering if the RAM is truly unexpandable (Max: 2 x 1GB sticks) or if what they report on their site is wrong and each slot is compatible with a 2GB stick so I can have 2 x 2GB sticks. Can anyone confirm either way? Thanks.

Why do you think this? Wouldn't worry too much about it, I think it'll take a while before N is widely implemented.

I'm really happy with my G1S, I had an IBM Thinkpad A30 before this and the performance boost is phenomenal as one might expect. It may not be as solid as the IBM but it's a lot more fun to use! WOO! Asus!

I purchased my asus g1s about a month ago. Currently I have two major problems but don't have the time to see if they have already been answered in this long thread. One is that when I try to burn cds using vista it makes me format the cd and while it does this it stalls and freezes. After restarting I click on the cd again it says its full and when I try to open it, it just crashes (blue screen). Does anyone else have this problem and will it be fixed in the next service pak? The other problem I have is the PCMCIA card slot - apparently its type 2 or something and I can't fit my audigy sould blaster 2 notebook PCMCIA card in it. Does anyone know of any adapters from type 2 to the bigger size or any other ways of fixing this? Also I looked at the reviews and I see a lot of rediculously high benchmarks apparently made right out of the box with no overclocking. I just ran 3d mark 05 got like a score of 1800 no where near won-suk choi's 7700. Thanks for your input

The G1S has an ExpressCard-slot. This is the newer version of PCMCIA, so your Audigy soundcard will not fit in it...

Mine has the N one. And your benchmark is really really really low. 1800? What video driver are you running? Did you install all the other drivers correctly? Do you have a G1S even? That seems almost impossible!

I had an issue with my optical drive as well, as it would not let me read from CDs and DVDs. Apparently that was Vista's User Access Control's doing. The way I solved it was suggested by one old thread on this forum. Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt and enter msconfig, go to the Tools tab, disable UAC. no problems with the drive since then. I haven't used Vista's CD/DVD writing program to create CDs, however, there are free programs on the Internet that can do it for you. Hope this helps.

Were you running it on Battery Saving or Quiet Office mode? Those two automatically clock the video card's capabilities down to roughly 1/2.

Is there a way for me to use the media buttons during a game without the game minimizing. It is really annoying.

Also, battlefield 2142 is randomly freezing on me, any suggestions?

I may actually have a solution for you. I was looking around nVidia's website the other day and I found something that said that if you are experiencing problems like that there is a Windows Hotfix that you should download. I downloaded it because Battlefield 2142 would randomly quit out on me or freeze. I have not tested it yet but I would recommend downloading it.

    NOTE:
The nVidia Hotfix page for Vista is here:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/windows_vista_hotfixes.html

The link to the Microsoft Hotfix (#1 on nVidia's list) is here:

    Hello everybody,
I've got a bit of a tricky question (atleast for me) regarding the temps...
In SpeedFan v4.32 I've got an idle temp of 47-51c in both cores while in Everest and SiSoftware Sandra I get around 63-66c being idle.
How is it possible to actually find out which program is correct?

I have gotten the same results. Having seen more programs show the second, higher result, I am inclined to believe that those would be the correct ones. But am not completely sure.

Also, has anyone tried Bioshock yet? I just tried it, and it wouldn't work at first. So then, I downloaded the latest nVidia Beta drivers from www.laptopvideo2go.com (163.44) with the modded INF, and was able to atleast get the video to work. But now, while in game (sans the pre-rendered cinematics) there is no sound in the game.

I do have Vista Ultimate installed on mine, but other than that, it's a base G1S with no other modifications. And every other game I've tried works fine, including Lost Planet. So not really sure as to what the cause is.

Would also like to greet everyone, as this is my first post. Hi :)

Hi all, just got my G1s 2 days ago, overall I like it very much builtwise and qualitywise. However it's very laggy when I play Neverwinter Nights 2, eventhough I have turned down the graphic. Is it the game that require much more powerful graphic card should I update the Nvidia driver to resolve this problem? Thanks a lot for your advices in advance.

Oh by the way, my first post! Greetings too all.

I play NWN2 on 1650x1080, but I turned most of the detail settings to medium, and I turned off bloom. I also put the lighting option to a basic setting (I can't remember the options exactly....something like: light sources come from characters, characters and terrain, whatever).
It generally runs pretty good. Blacklake always runs choppy, but most of the other places run pretty smooth.
I think turning off bloom makes the biggest difference, along with the light sources and reflective water.

I am not sure if the G1S uses the same AC adapter size as the G1 but if it does then http://estore.asus.com does have it, just under the G1 section.

The direct link is here: http://estore.asus.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=3782&catid=551

It is more expensive but direct so you know that you can trust them.

So quick question, does the G1S use the same AC adapter as the G1?

Just an update on the Bioshock issue, if anyone runs into the same problem; Interestingly, the realtek drivers for the soundcard seem to be giving issues to anyone using a realtek chipset. The problem seems to be vista related. But, running the game in XP SP2 compatability mode solves this issue. Am running the game at 1024x768 at full details...game looks beautiful and runs great. Definately glad I purchased this laptop :)

Would also be interested to know about where to purchase an additional battery and A/C adapter as well. Always nice to have another battery for longer trips, and never know when might need an A/C adapter as well. So that leads to the same question as LiveDesign, is the G1S adapter the same as the G1?

G1S battery is listed... no definite fit for the charger, although I remember Eddie saying he ran a G1S on the G2S' charger with no ill effects, if the 90watt one isn't the correct one.

Well, as for specs thats the G1S stock options, I manage great with those specs yet I've seen quite a few people going with the 3GB RAM option and 160GB 7200RPM rather than 5400RPM.
Keep in mind that these are easy to upgrade after you receive the computer as well.

Regarding whether the computer is good for you, well that really depends on your needs at the moment I haven't seen a laptop that can beat a G1S at this price range in the gaming ares.
The main weakness of such a laptop like this is the low battery life (around 2 hours on power saving mode), therefor if your looking for it to be very portable I would probably say that this isn't the laptop that suits your needs.

Edit: Regarding the price I would say it's quite good since I bought mine two weeks ago for 2050 Canadian dollars.

i'm interested in how hot your G1S gets.

    right now SpeedFan reports:
    Core0: 44C
    Core1: 44C

    nTune reports:
    GPU: 75C

    I'm idleing in windows.

I believe Speedfan reports the temperature lower than what it is suppose to be. If you use RmClock, you would notice the cpu temperature increases by about 13C, so 44+13 = 57C idle.

Right now my cpu temperature using Speedfan is 42C and gpu is 71C. This is in battery saving mode.

hey guys, right now I'm torn between the V1S and the G1S. I'm more of a conservative guy so I'm not into the gamer's look (as long as the green side lights can be turned off, which I think can be). But the V1S is not in stock anywhere in Canada and the next shipment will arrive in 2 weeks, that's what the stores say so it could be delayed even more (Mind you, I've been waiting for a month already and been doing a lot of research, since late July). I hear though, that the G1S has problems of its own, such as booting up troubles (black screen) and just on the forum, a lot of threads saying 'G1S problem ...'.

So in conclusion, should I go for the G1S which I can get now but won't be to my full liking, but livable. Or wait a little bit longer for the one I want that suits my needs very well.

    thanks

My G1S has been flawless, most of the problems listed on here are due to the OS not the computer itself.

you mean with the XP OS installed on it not the Vista right? Another question. How flashy is the G1S. Does it turn heads when you walk into the classroom and scream "look at me!"

Walking into a classroom with a Sunflower yellow or Pink Dell would attract much more attention. ;)

well i'm considering the g1s but I really like the professional look, like that of the V1S rather than a gamer's look, and would like to know if it would be fine to take it to a business meeting or typing at university

I brought it to my class today, it was perfectly fine for typing in class. Just remember to turn off the side lights, then it won't be that noticeable. :)

I love my G1S, but ive got a couple of issues:

    1. All my function buttons work except one. FN + F9 (touchpad lock) doesnt work. Any ideas?

    2. I can not install new drivers from laptopvideo2go, it just says that the driver isnt compatable with my system. I cant understand that because ive got Vista Ultimate 32bit, and im installing drivers for Vista 32bit.

Any ideas? Help would be highly appreciated.
