LBThorn, I found that changing the sound setting in the lower right corner by the clock improved the sound a bit, at least less echo. I changed the setting from default to room, living room, several in between, and settled on forest, I think. Not as echoy as default, not as shut off as rooms, still crap speakers, but in my 2.1's that setting is good. I'd recommend a set of 2.1 speakers if you're still not satisfied.

Thanks, I'll definetly change to room setting. However, can you help me out? I have been trying to get my desktop speakers to work on the laptop and in the process of trying I somehow don't have any sound at all. How do I get my sound back. I think I disabled something in control panel but everything says that nothing is muted.

Don't use the power button on the bottom. :D Apparently using the power button at the bottom, powers up the laptop and runs Media Center by default.

Using the power button at the top right should boot you up without starting Media Center.

The GPU does that automatically when in Battery Saving mode. That's with the VGA driver available on the ASUS website though.

If you use modded drivers, you can set the settings to 2d performance(which will take that clock speeds down pretty far) with RivaTuner. I have yet to see how much more battery life I get by doing that though.

I think my G2S sounds way too much! The fan always run att medium/high..

Ok, I will probably be ordering my g1s sometime tomorrow, so here are some final questions.

Im going into college this fall and need a laptop for surfing the web, listening to music, doing my papers, and gaming. Is the g1s the right laptop for me or are their better choices out there?(for the same price or less).

Any major problems that will make me regret my purchase of the g1s?

Going to order from gentechpc, should I order elsewhere? Any ideas how long it will take to get to me? I will need it by Friday the latest.

Any comments or advise would be appreciated.

g1s is good for all that, especially if u need gaming. other choices are ifl 90 / sager 2090 or the dell 1520, both of which are cheaper, little slower, but have shipping delays. you can also get macbook pro but thats more expensive

the speakers on the g1s have no bass so get headphones. also theres a current issue where cpu clocks down to 50% when battery is charging and will not go up till batt is done charging

search forum for the g1s places to buy thread, but gentech is fine, u might want to try to avoid tax by buying from out of state.

i think the g1s is a very good laptop, well worth the money (compare macbook pro), ur making a good purchase

I changed my IFL90 order to a G1S yesterday because there was no way I would be getting the compal before I left for school.

This problem where the CPU clocks down while charging.... Is Asus aware of it and doing something to fix it? That seems like a rather large problem and it would be nice to know that it was not very permanent at all.

Once every couple days, I get a blue screen on my g1s that says something about irql not less or equal to something, and the computer dumps the memory somewhere and restarts. Does anyone else have this problem? Could it be because of a bad stick of ram that i installed? Should I try reinstalling the OS (Vista) or something? Thanks in advance for any help...

Run Memtest86 and see if it picks up any errors. If something comes up, run it with just one stick in, then the other to find out which is the bad one. RMA that stick, and win.

If nothing comes up as wrong, I'd suggest a reformat, preferably from a full install DVD, but Asus recovery would probably be ok as well.

My G1s is still very slow loading up things like the control panel. It is taking up to 10 seconds!

Anyone know what is causing this? I don't even get on the internet with it yet. Just a few times and only visited update sites. I am mostly just playing games and watching movies. It is really starting to bother me.

The G1S is great at playing games.....but dirt slow loading up the control panel.

This may seem like a stupid question, but oh well.

I'm gonna format my comp with a retail Vista disc, but it is scratched quite a bit. If the install fails, but the drive has already been formatted into one large NTFS partition, will the recovery disc be able to rebuild everything?

    (does that make sense? lol)

Looks like it won't matter :D

Decided I really didn't care if the recovery partition was there, and there was no real reason not to leave it partitioned as C and D (stock).

Updating and installing drivers as I type, woo.

Alright, I have what may be a dumb, albeit very important, question. I got my G1S today, and it looks good. I booted up windows, and as I expected, a whole lot of bloatware came with it, to the tune of 65 processes. I would normally just reformat, but I don't have a retail Vista CD available, only what came with the computer. Is there any way to reformat and reinstall Vista using the Recovery DVD without installing all the extra programs that Asus puts on there? Or will I be forced to somehow get a retail copy of Vista, or just put XP on there? Thanks.

DDR3 supposedly, although I've yet to run any benchmarks myself.

Also, I fixed my original problem, but I've noticed that the monitor has quite a bit of light bleeding, especially on the bottom. Anything I can do about this? I seem to doubt it would fall under RMA category, but damn is it annoying.

The light bleed is very noticeable when the laptop is starting up, on a black screen the light bleed is pretty bad. But in normal usage eg. internet, word, video, and gaming. I don't notice it at all. Also I believe it is an issue with the hardware and not software, so I don't think it can be fixed. :(

Oh, one last relatively minor question. The wireless icon on the front of the computer is constantly blinking whenever the internet is working it seems. This can get pretty annoying...very annoying at times. I could just put a piece of tape over it, but is there any way to disable it or just have it solidly on or off?

so im about a week or so away from gettin my G1s from some laptop store. since the possibilities of having defects in the laptop arent always that incredibly low...i was just wonderin what tests/inspections i shud do to ensure that everything's working properly (eg. CPU, GPU, RAM tests ect). cheers

P.S. whats the best way to get all the stuff from my old W3 (XP) to my new G1s. how do i deal with all my itunes music??? i think they may have diff. folders which they use....

I don´t know if there is solution to install a clean vista without bloat from your recovery cd but you can order a vista upgrade dvd paying only a postal charge of € 3,57. There is a way to install the upgrade like a retail version and it is legal because you have a vista key which came with your NB. The order works in europe, didn´t look were your are from. For more information please feel free to contact me.

Is anyone here using an external monitor for the G1S? I tried connecting my G1S to my 32" TV via S-video cable. It work, and the resolution wasn't that good. But when I close the lid, the TV screen disappears. I tried to set the output to only the TV (and not the notebook lcd), but I still can't close the lid on my notebook, or it cuts the video. It would be stupid for me to use an external monitor, and it requires me to keep my notebook open. Anyone know if there is a way to fix this?

Take a look at the advanced power settings from the control panel. You may have the system set to sleep or hibernate when you close the lid. Change the setting to "do nothing" and it should allow your system to operate with the lid closed. On the other hand, watch the system temperature as it may overheat with the lid closed.

I have it set to do nothing when lid is close, but for some reason, it still cuts the video output. My notebook is still running (not sleep or hibernate), but display becomes black. I'm still using the stock video driver, so I'm assuming it's not the drivers fault.

The battery will normally only have a minimal charge, so best you just charge the battery to full.

There's a Windoze sticker on the bottom with a key... not sure if you'll be able to install using that key and a retail disc, however.

You should have the key on a sticker under the laptop. If not, there might be a key included with the recovery cd.
