Is it really worth getting 3 GBs of RAM?

"Swap" is when you don't have enough RAM for all of the active programs at once (a common occurrence). Your computer then writes some of the memory than (hopefully) hasn't been used lately to the hard drive and frees it up for other programs. This is a huge performance hit as accessing this data from the hard drive is much slower than from RAM.

its the G1s Owners lounge, i think this is a BAD!!! spot to ask. I love my g1s so far still waiting for a few things to be fixed and it will be great. but i can tell you one thing if your going to bring it around alot, the g1s was heavier then i thought, if you have to carry the laptop, and books, but its able to manage.

Which is better, a hammer or a screwdriver? The answer is it depends whether you are driving nails or installing screws.

My point is different tools are better for different purposes. The Dell is an ultra light business computer. The G1s is a medium to high powered game system. Do you need really fast graphics and a big screen or do you need long battery life and light weight?

Only you can decide which attributes answer your needs.

There is a big difference in the M1330 and the G1s, what you should really ask is where you are going to be taking your laptop and if you need the portability.

Where has everyone here bought their G1S from? Right now I'm trying to pick from either Xotic PC, BTOtech, and Proportable. Proportable right now is the cheapest when I throw in the free notebook cooler and bluetooth express card remote control (valued $100) in addition to $50 student discount. I like XoticPC however because I have heard they have amazing service and offer a great return policy.

This is where I bought mine and I am happy with the purchase.

But if I were to buy it again, I'd buy it here for $50 less and get a .5GB thumb drive with it. I am also near that store which is a big plus for me, maybe not you though if you're not in Seattle area.

Can anyone tell me if the CPU on the G1s is user upgradable. I mean, if I wanted to, could I replace the CPU with a T7600?

    Thanks

Sweet looks like we're up to BIOS version 204

No idea what's different though, use at your own risk!

From the BIOS CPU problem thread:

Yes, you can upgrade the CPU, but most people get the one they think they want to start off with because upgrading costs more considering you have to do something with the old one.

NOT with a t7600...it's not the same kind of cpu exactly...You need to stay in the same serie: T7100,t7300,t7500 and t7700...So the only cpu more powerfull is the t7700, and it does NOT worth the price over the perf boost :)

Hi, how is your G1S performing with Company of Heroes ?
I've got to say that I'm a little bit disapointed with it. I get about 35 fps at 1024x768 and most settings on high, some on medium and few on low (I didn't change anything, auto settings) ...

Do you have better results ?
    Thx

Depends on what part of the game. The cut scenes are very demanding, but when actually playing the game, I have no problem running 1680x1050. Maybe I haven't played far enough into the game though.

Ok thanks for answering ! I'll try to get these new drivers.
Mryerse, I'm not far into the game either but it stutters sometimes (like in other games btw) and the framerate is decent but not exceptional.

What do you mean "that bad"?

It's probably the best 8600GT equipped 15.4 model you can buy for the money when it comes to gaming.

I just got mine today btw, and I'm really enjoying it. Vista is...well, Vista. But after months of reading about it and tweaking, it's tolerable.

The computer itself is a very solid, and nice looking machine.

Gaming performance will depend on what you're used to. I have been used to turning all the effects down on my old 6600GT(desktop), but now the old games I played look completely new to me.

For a notebook the graphics are amazing, especially for the price. But for hardcore gaming, desktops are the way to go.

If you compare this laptop to a desktop, yes it's not as good. But for laptops, this one is far from bad at gaming. Don't know where you got that from. I am on a base with many laptops around me, and this laptop by far has superior graphics compared to any other laptop here.

It will fine. It's close to the best power you can get in any laptop/desktop. The desktops are pulling away lately with the quad extremes and 8800's, but overall, this will run better than any 2006 built desktop on those games more or less.

I order mine last friday and it shipped the same day. I used the free ground shipping from gentech, so all in all it took 6 days. No big deal really, it had to come from across the country.

EDIT: I need to get some new games. The last game I bought was Half-Life 2, and this machine handles that game without breaking a sweat at 1680X1050. Very much unlike my old notebook with its 64MB Radeon 9200.

CS:Source and WoW will not be any problem. You could probably run both at the same time :p

I play BF2 with 64 players in 1280x1024 with no problems at all! - i think fps is 40-60 constant!

I play Oblivion at 1680X1050 with medium settings without OC. FPS is a little slow but that's okay for this type of game. Lowering to low settings still at 1680X1050 should get better framerates for those interested.

Hey you guys, I ordered my G1S on Wednesday and it should arrive next Thursday. A little more than a week, I wonder why. Did anyone else have to wait over a week?

Also, I was wondering how the G1S performs with HL2/CS:S, Oblivion, FEAR, Guild Wars, The Sims 2, and Doom 3?

Well, new problem .. When the computer hibernates (advanced hibernation or I don't know how to call it), I can't wake it properly.
Actually, the screen remains black ...

May the new graphic drivers 165.1 cause the trouble ?
    Thx a lot.

I've heard of this problem when running XP, but not with Vista. From what i've been told, it's a BIOS issue. Don't really have any way to confirm this, though.

Oh, and for those asking about shipping, I ordered mine from GenTech on Tuesday the 31st. It shipped on the afternoon of the 1st and UPS says it'll arrive on the 8th. So... about a week for me. But, since I live on the east coast, I can understand the shipping time.

I placed my order through ExcaliberPc on Wed 8/1 at around 2:45 pm and it shipped out the same day. Expecting the laptop to arrive today 8/3 anytime within the next 2 hours. it's was just Ground Shipping. Great experience with them.

and also, this is kinda a newb question. What's BIOS? why do we need to update it regularly? when update, where to put the newly downloaded files into? thanks guys

I seem to have had the same problem a while back. Not sure if it was a powersaving issue that i had made or if it was the 165 drivers as i think i was on them at the time but moved to the 163 drivers now. Still couldnt figure what was going on and had to hold the power button for about 30 seconds for it to do a reboot :S

Also would anyone know what the best performing dirvers or most stable video drivers are currently? I know laptoptogo has them but seems there are issues with the new ones and the 165 are actually old ones compared to say the 163.xx's which im on now

Last but not least i have a question regarding some permance issues when playing BF2. Not sure if it's just game related but when im playing there will be times where i can tell its not graphics related more processor related i would think as it has little second jug chumps lol. Anyone had this problem or know what may be causing such a thing?

    Thanks
    Eso

And for everyone who has the laptop, how is it for gaming?
With the graphic card it has and dual processor I thought it would be good. But I hear all these thing like lag and hiccups, which is scaring me.

All those games you have listed will mainly HLF2/CS:S, Sims 2 and Guild Wars you will be able to run at Max Eye Candy, i would even say DOOM 3 to. Oblivion might not be able to run as high with all the goodies but will still run decent to well with high graphics. FEAR Can do max graphics to and the high resolutions, i would stay at 1280-1024 and no AA kind of thing. :D

Its a killer gaming machine (for a laptop), i love it.

Just wanted to post that my G1S has just arrived from GenTech. I live down the road from them and they wouldn't allow me to pick it up, which was disappointing, but it did arrive the day after it shipped. Ordered it on Tuesday, hickup with the CC company the next day, and then here on today, Friday.

Everything seems to be in good condition, though, so that's pleasing. This bloatware is completely annoying, though, and I'm spending a long time getting everything updated and set up. Being new to Vista doesn't help much either.

If anyone has some information to share, tweaks and whatnot, it'd be appreciated.

That's where I bought mine. They had a good price, and were one of the (if not the) first retailers to ship it. They were true to their word on getting it when they got it and I am happy about that. Don't have much else to say about them.

Cool I'm glad someone is testing out games with this laptop.

Is there anyway you could take some snap shot or pictures while you are gaming, I was just wondering how the graphics look.

Also all the games you played, you have not noticing any stuttering or lag(It does not need to be on highest settings, but you understand what I mean).

Also how about when you play games with the laptop unpluged?

Sorry for the bunch of question, hopfully this laptop will handle future games like gears.
