At first I was put off by the partitioning, but after consideration, I think it's a good change and smart idea for all the reasons Irathi stated. Asus did it for a reason and I am thinking they are smarter than I am! I'm going to learn to work with the partitioning just to expand my knowledge for the fun of it.
-
HD partitioning is highly recommended.

Try re-installing the drivers. You might also have to click on classic view in control panel.
Just checked... the icon for me is different than I am used to for the realtek control panel entry. -
hmm only thing i have is the sound control panel, and that has most of the realtek features but not all, oh well not too important. thanks for the help

After all I've read and seen, including the crap the 1520 from Dell seems to ofer like a graphics card with a leg chopped off because of ddr2 instead of gddr3, the grainy display, the inferior performance to the g1s plus the goodies the g1s comes with and what you guys say about the build quality I'm deffinetly thinking about canceling my 3 day in order for the 1520 and ordering a g1s (even a reviewer from this site sent back his 1520 in favor of the g1s and that's not the only case). I still have some questions though:
1: does it sport dual channel ddr? (It's been awhile since i've bought a computer... 5 years to be more precise, and I've kinda lost track of technology updates in this time... sorry ))
2: I understand that for dual channel to work you need two modules of the same type (capacity/make... something like that) So a 3 Gb variant wouldn't sport dual channel... but what happens if i get the 2g variant and share some memory with the graphics card to eek out some fps?
3: what do you guys know about the warranty? Does it apply no matter what country yoy are from if it's offered by ASUS? (i'm not changing the cpu on my machine... staying with the stock 2.2, just adding the 7200 Seagate HDD for some more speed...
I'm considering this system because I feel that it will last some time at this level of performance (at least 3 years of running most of everything without much trouble... I know games don't exactly make this category because I've seen what some games need in order to run smoothly (and personally I wouldn't buy two of the most expensive SLI cards and plug them into a monster motherboard which ould add up to more $$$... darn, I need to eat )
So guys, enlighten me -
The G1S has the same "grainy" display as the 1520... edit: to clarify better. the G1S and the 1520 both have grainy/silkscreen-effect on thier displays... different companies manufacture them however.
It does have dual channel memory (2x1GB), upgrading to 3GB makes things less choppy because then the games will have 2GB+ and the video card will be using the ~1GB for its turbocache. I *believe* the first 2GB will still run in dual channel mode, but the last GB will not. Not really sure if it really does do this, it didn't in the past since the SPD had to be the same for dual channel to work. Either way the performance gained from adding the extra GB will outweigh the loss of dual channel.
3- I believe ASUS has the 2 year global warranty, and upgrading the ram/hdd does not void that warranty. -
is the grainy screen like other asus notebook screens? im using a w3v right now and the screens glossy and really nice
-
No idea... this is my first notebook/laptop ever.
I really don't care about the grainyness... only visable on the white and when you are close to it heh -
I just got my G1S in the mail and I'm trying to decide which laptop to keep . . . I am very underwhelmed by the G1S. The screen is identical to the 1520 screen, right down to the manufacturer. The speakers and bloatware are *terrible*, and the keyboard has some flex at the top. It also to me doesn't feel quite as sturdy as the 1520. However, there isn't any interference over the headphone jack and the graphics performance is better, plus the accessories are neat (although I'm not sure I'd trust the laptop in the backpack for a big drop).
-
hehe stella... keep us informed... well at least me, will have the same choice in a little
-
Well, don't drop your laptop! Heh.
This is a great laptop. I love mine. I've been using it in Camp Lejeune for about a month and a half now. Gaming is awesome for a 15" laptop. It performs well and is sturdy enough. I don't notice a flex problem with the keyboard nor do I notice a graininess. I think that IBM's have nicer screens as far as viewing angles, but the glossiness is nice if you're looking directly at it. It's heavy and big, but being in the military moving a lot, I think if I am okay with it, I don't know why you need anything lighter than me. Despite the size and weight it is a great laptop.
I think we all get perfection in our minds, and we all need to remember all laptops are very complicated machines and we need to choose the plusses and minuses of each. I game, download, and use other intense applications (like AGK), and love this laptop. Oblivion looks great on this laptop. -
Just a quick question: Can you guys recommend a car charger for ASUS G1 ? Not G1S. I'll be on the road a lot in the next couple of weeks so keeping my lappy on is a must but I don't know what brand to buy and where to buy them. Thanks for the help

I am in search of a laptop for college right now and it has come down to either the G1s, the IFL90, or the macbook pro.
Im leaning towards the G1s due to the IFL90s lack of supply/unknown shipping dates and the macbooks price.
So a few questions.
1) How is Asus's costumer service? Will they give me a hard time if I ever have to call in with a problem?
2)Are there any major problems occuring with the G1s right now?
3) Do all G1s come with the 256mb video card because on xoticpc it seems to be coming with 512mb instead.
Also if anyone wants to give any advice or comments, they will nice as well. -
1) I really don't know. I'm in the same boat as you deciding on a new laptop. That said, both models I'm considering are Asus. I've heard great things, but have no first hand experience.
2) That depends on what you call "major problems." The G1s seems to have its quirks, many of which are covered on this forum (50% performance while charging, "grainy" screen, etc.) but aside from the charging performance issue, I haven't seen any big problems.
3) The one on xotic is listed as 512 with Turbocache. If you go to the customize and buy page, it lists the 512 Turbo Cache, but 256MB on board. I'd imagine that this means it has the same 256MB 8600GT card that every other G1s being sold has. Now, that said... What's turbocache? -
Turbocache allows the graphics card to allocate additional memory from your system RAM. If you have at least 3GB system RAM, then Turbocache can really do wonders for the G1s' game play.

I have a battery issue with g1s. Some days all of a sudden in the toolbar under the powersave icon, it says no battery identfied. This isn't an issue for me yet since im usually plugged in. But when i move the laptop around the house, dissconnecting power usually shuts down the laptop. Maybe the battery is loosely in or something? Another thing is the battery is drained super fast, and is not even close to the 2 hours, probably around 30 minutes.
-
-
so is it safe to say that I would be receiving the same computer from newegg that I would from xoticpc?
-
Quick question. If I change my RAM and if I decide to reinstall Vista - will my key be voided? Also does the G1S come with an OEM DVD of Vista or just a recovery DVD?
-
Just the recovery DVD, unless you get an OS upgrade from somewhere like GenTech.

After reading Stella's post about how this laptop is not-so-stellar, I'm not too sure about purchasing this laptop.
I'm torn between this and a Sony. Hrm..This really does seem to be the best gaming (yet portable) laptop for me, despite the 2.5 hour-ish battery life. Is it really that short? :/ I don't want it to die on me in the middle of a lecture. -
It's still a pretty cool laptop, just not as flawless as I expected. The two big negatives are the screen (which apparently is typical of all WSXGA 15.4" screens right now) and the speakers (which, well, no excuse for those, lol). Battery life does seem to be really that bad, but you have to expect it with this kind of performance. I'd pick this OR the 1520 over a Sony any day, though .
-
Its about time for me to buy a G1s. Where is the cheapest I can find it, so far the lowest ive found is $1805.
-
The about as low as it gets right now.
-
Definetely not getting a Dell 1520. Looks ugly, heavy, etc.
I'm worried that the screen flaw would ruin things, but eh. Apparently it isn't that noticable? -
My G1s is scheduled to arrive thursday according to UPS tracking. Despite the little niggles, i'm still very exciting. Mine was $1805 from gentech, and that was with free shipping, and ofcourse, no tax. Ordered mine at 6am eastern time and it was shipped the same day, less than 12 hours later.
I'll gladly share my opinions on the screen, and overall quality. -
-
I know this may be a question you guys have seen before. But performance wise, which will do better, the G1s or the IFL90? If the IFL90 does actually ship early in august, I might just wait it out.
-
The G1s will be better for gaming than the IFL90 due to it's higher clocked GDDR2 video memory.
-
-
-
Omg!!! 5000+!!!
-
This or the SamSung R70? How about the other Asus choices, like the F8 something? >_>
-
When I try to overclock my G1S through Ntune my settings will not save. When I press "use/save" in the right bottom corner they just jump back to the original setting. What am I doing wrong? I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit.
-
I'm looking for a new laptop, and I have a few questions regarding the HDMI and D-Sub outputs of the G1s:
-Will using a HDMI -> DVI-D adaptor give me the exact result/quality at 1680x1050 60Hz as outputting it from a native DVI-port?
-Can the HDMI and D-Sub be used separately at the same time? So I can run a triple-screen setup in extended desktop mode. -
hdmi quality > dvi-d, so adapter should give u same quality
as the display settings on my g1s only have 2 monitors listed, i am assuming it only supports dual monitors. ie the hdmi, vga out, and s-vid out will all be the same output -
-
-
There is only 1 video out port on the G1S and it is an HDMI port. You can get adapters that convert from HDMI to DVI, and probably also s-vid, not sure if you can get one that supports dual monitor though, you might have to use an external plus your laptop LCD for dual monitor.
Correction, there is also an s-vid port... but I doubt it can function as a seperate screen and must mirror what is on the LCD. -
The 5000+ above is only due to the resolution. Most 3dmark06 scores were 1280x1024 but this one was done at 1024x768. That makes a big difference.
-
anyone have 3d scores with 3gigs of ram???
-
Whats the highest that the 8600gt on this baby has been clocked so far and still hold stable with safe temps, anyone know?
-
-
-
Another side question, whats the lowest that anyone has managed to get vista to and the asus bloatware to on IDLE for ram. Im trying to configure Vista as best i can without having to turn back to xp.
Thanks -
-
I'm running 562/768 with good temps after an hour of oblivion time. I think it will handle more than that easily, just haven't tested it yet.

:edit: Was this is a silly question heh i know things in my life , this is not one :|
