Interesting, I didn't notice any notes indicating what the update did on their website after looking at it multiple times.

    Thanks for the info.

Generally it's not a good idea to update your BIOS unless there is something broken you need fixed. Otherwise there's a chance something that is working could break when nothing was wrong in the first place. BIOS updates are not like video card updates... use with more caution.

Looks like the ASUS support site was just updated. Looks a little nicer. Nothing but the new BIOS for the G1S though

From Asus-treiber.de, some fuller info on BIOS 203:

"Changed the Memory Refresh Mode select from 7.8 usec to 3.9 usec.
Note: This is the project leader and Sale PM request.
    Correctly the Japan keyboard Matrix.
Update Azalize AUDIO verb table for G1S of ALC-660D.
Correct the Direct Media button for G1S."

Great notebook. Only two things that annoy me a tad is the inability to disable the Numpad (it auto turns on in applications and stays on in a stuck state for some reason) and second the inability to set virtual video memory to get 512mb of ram on 8600 cards.

yeah...and that whole bug about only getting ~50% of the cpu's power when the battery is under 90% with the ac plugged is a b!tch too....I say screw everything else, i hope asus fixes that mess immediately.

The G1S is being sold at Mobile Advance for $1789.00.

Has anyone had experience with them? I'm looking for the cheapest place to get the notebook without any changes done to it.

Is there any dissassembly things for the G1S yet? I wanna take off the cover of it and paint it, but can't figure out how to take it off for the life of me... and don't wanna break anything.
(I just saw the colors on the inspiron dells and am super jealous of the pink they get, looks awesome... and how cheap they are too... cest la vie...)

    Heya all,
Just wanted to let u all know, If u press esc at boot up it will show u the POST screen and u then u can press f2 to get into the CMOS to set password and stuff + I successfully did a clean install on Ultimate :p so glad i got 2 copies for free :p
Anywayz I wanna tell u all about my input on the g1s, currently with the Premium OS i found that alot of games were not supported and performance was a little off, Now i'm using Ultimate + 165.01 drivers from Laptopvideo2go.com and i can see a performance dif, Plus in premium I had a problem installing some games like CnC3, Warcraft III, AoE III and such, don't forget that the Gaming OS was claimed to be the Utlimate edition sooo don't be surprised if Microsoft Nurfed the other OS making gamers Buy the best version :S FYI, i bought my laptop at NCIX.com in canada for 210 1900 -90MIR :p

Are you sure it's the OS and not the drivers? I have about 6 new games all working fine on my G1S, with Windows premium and the drivers from asus. performance is satisfactory.

How would Ultimate be better at gaming? What would it have that would make it better?

When you guys talk about Clean Install does it mean you used the recovery cd and "recovered" the laptop with it as soon as you got it? Im wondering if I should do that... Maybe it'd be better than uninstalling all the bloatware manually...???

This is a long thread and I can't read every page. Does the Asus G1S we're talking about, can it play games like Oblivion, Halo 2, and DiRT at max settings? How about Crysis too? I ordered mine recently and I am also concerned about the speakers. I heard from reviews that they are poor compared to other laptops. I'm not looking for the "ultimate" sound card but I want a decent one.

Chey, you are correct. The recovery DVD included by ASUS will turn back the laptop to the factory image, which includes all drivers and applications needed or provided by ASUS.

Each core should definitely be running at 2.2ghz unless speedstep had kicked in and it is running slower.

Hey, just got my G1s! I have the generic specs, 2.2Ghz, 2 gigs ram, 8600Gt etc. Anyone know why my Vista index score is showing up as 4.4 instead of the normal 4.8 that people with these specs get? The lowest score is the CPU.

something to do with power settings, im getting the same issue but havent been able to resolve it. my mem score is 4.6 and not 4.8 as well

if u search the asus forum "wei", people say its due to the power saving settings. but i havent gotten it to work right. in any case i suppose its not too important.

ryanm00 you have to go to intel's site and download the inf update to get it to show up more than 4.4... and then run it right after a reboot, with nothing running in the background.

I ran the recovery disk to fix a problem with a corrupt tcpip.sys. One nice thing you new owners might be interested in is that with the recovery disk it gives you an option to restore to one large partition, using the entire disk for C:. This is my preference as have a D: for data makes no sense, just makes it harder to organize. I'd still rather have a clean copy of Windows, but I'm going to stick with this for now.

    Turbo graphics ram? Huh?
Turbocache is part of the drivers (the thing that uses your system ram as an overflow for your video card ram)
Robson/Intel Turbo memory (whatever its called... the thing that before was supposed to speed up boot times and help with using less battery, etc) is not in the G1S.

    I couldn't disagree more.

    2 partitions is great for 2 things;

    1- safety
    2- organising

    ~1~
Safety, this will prevent in many cases virus attacking windows from attacking your personal files (which you put on D :). Also if you ever have to re-install Windows on C: and you need to FORMAT C:, you wont loose the information you had on D: .- This is very usefull if your windows crashes (hasn't this happened to every windows owner at some time?).

    ~2~
Its simple, - You go to C: for Windows + windows programs like Office/AntiVirus/Winamp. Since C: is so big on G1S i also put my MP3 files here. I would prefere a bigger D: so i could put my MP3 here.
D: you use for your Games/Personal files/Photos/Applications install files.

This way you wont loose your personal files in 99% of windows crashes. Also Its easy to find your game files and personal files.
    D:\Wow
    D:\Talladega.Knights.DVD.Rip.2006
    D:\Photos
    C/D:\MP3

instead of a Dir like windows makes on default:
    C:\Program Files\Blizzard\WorldOfWarcraft\Warcraft\Fuxxod\hard\to\find
    C:\Documents and Settings\jog\My Documents\My Pictures
    C:\Documents and Settings\jog\My Documents\My Music

Just placed an order at GenTech for a G1s.

I'm so excited, I'm finally getting a new computer. :D

It was a tough decision between the C90 and G1s, or if I should have waited for the HP 8510p or Asus V1s. Ultimately, the G1 just had everything I wanted.

Ok guys, Since you all have experience with the G1s, maybe you can help me make a decision. Should I go ahead and order a G series, or would I be better off waiting for the V1s?

    Here are my main concerns:
    G1s has 8600GT 256 MB card listed
V1s has 8600GT 512 MB card listed (in the .pdf catalog thing)
Wouldn't the gaming machine have a better card than it's more-or-less twin brother?

Build Quality differences between G1s and potential V1s. I know business machines are usually built like tanks, but I have no idea the duribility and quality of the G series.

Styling doesn't matter much, I've seen the G1 in person and it's not too over the top for me.

To each his own. I've been using computers enough to know it's not that big of a deal. A windows crash is not likely to render an entire partition useless. A hard drive crash would, but in that case chances are you lost D too.

As for viruses, most of them now days are more interested in things other than music, movies, and pictures, so putting those files on you OS is safe.

If your system is so sensitive like a server is, the have two partitions, but for average joe it just complicates things. One big partition for everything is fine.
