I actually like the speakers on the PSP better, because it doesn't sound muffled.
Pen drives, aka USB keys, flash drives, etc.

So is it true that the usb slots behind don't have enough space for 4 flash drives? Only 2?
Also I'm guessing the speakers on G1s sound muffled? Damn, that sucks.
Thanks for answering my questions. -
Pen drives are flash usb drives. In my country they are called pen drives. I beleive that's their name. -
Got my G1S in the mail today, of all my laptops, i am liking this the most, styling, build quality, screen and speed. Does get a bit warm though. Bought a Targus cooler pad, $50 with built in 2.0 USB's and huge fans, runs quiet and cool.
Awesome purchase -

Sorry for offtopic:
People whats the mark of g1s in wPrime ?
Can anyone post one image of the test ? -
Hi..
I will buy the g1s a1 from Excaliberpc.com.
1. Since this is the first laptop, could you guys please tell me, what should I do first step by step, once i received the laptop. Do I need to charge the laptop first for several hours (just like the usual goods that is using battery)?
2. I think the laptop come with the windows vista. Is it already installed ? Or should I do something else?. Asus will also give us the recovery CD. what is it for actually?
3. Do you guys know how is the best way to check the dead/bright dot on the LCD? I read that bright dot is quite easily noticeable, yet the dead dot is hardly seen. So do i need specific method to recognize both at the same time?
Thank you very much.. -
-
2.Vista Home Premium is pre-installed. The Asus Recovery DVD is for reinstalling the OS if you had an uh-oh or if you really want to clean up your system.
3.There are programs that can assist with that, I'll look it up and edit my post if I find anything. I usually just cycle through different colored backgrounds.
Edit: here's a website that can help you find dead/bright/stuck pixels.

Milestonepc offer a 160gig 5400tr/m to 100gig 7200tr/m upgrade for the g1s. It cost about 50$us(59$can) so I would like to know if it wort it. Does the 7200 will ready boost performance?
-
Just got mine. Uninstalled a lot of the bloatware and disabled some of the services I didnt want and its running great! Downloading some games right now to see how it does. I love this thing!

Hi
Sorry to asking, but I just facing and falilure with my new G1S (bought less then 1 month ago). The laptop hang during the boot, in the middle of Vista's boot, on a driver accessing the disk
The Asus Support gave me a strange answer: just do an hard reset
The strange part to me is that the hard reset is done through the following procedure:
1) detach power and battery
2) click the reset button 10 times eek: ). The small button under the laptop, nearby the batteries, you need a nail to click it. Number 5 on the ASUS G1S usser manual
3) wait 10 minutes
4) retry
So, I tried many times, but it is not working
QUESTION
Do you confirm this hard reset preocedure?
Anyone facing similar problems?
Thanks

Good luck,

I don't think I would be able to sacrifice 60gigs of space for a faster hard drive.

How much have you all been able to undervolt this so far?
I still have Vista and am using RMClock to undervolt it.
I got it so far to run at 1.063v at the 11x multiplier.. gets up to about 74c after playing EQ2 for.. "a few hours" (Hey, i am on vacation... lay off )
Just seems odd it being that low... at least to me, thats like .175v lower.
I dunno, its just getting really close to the lowest voltage I can set in RMClock -

What exactly is the bad thing about the speakers of G1s? The sound coming out of the G1s being very soft even at maximum volume, or sound coming out is very loud, but crappy quality?
-
Got my G1S two days ago so here are my first impressions:
Build quality is ok (though I have quite high standards for this) and it has a nice feeling. No flex anywhere unless you press/bend really hard.
The high resolution display makes everything look sharp and crisp. Ofcourse colors aren't perfect, but it's not reasonable to expect that from this kind of element. It has a significant backlight bleed from below which is quite distracting when looking at dark scenes. Probably a real turn-off if you're interested in watching movies and playing dark, scary games.
It doesn't look "professional" but I'd say it's far from as bad as I thought it would be. The neon green area around the webcam is a bit obtrusive but flashing green side lights doesn't bother you once they're turned off I haven't figured out if the ugly round G1 logo below the touchpad has some kind of purpose, but sometimes it glows green. I'm not too fond of the turquoise color of the mini-display since it clashes a bit with the otherwise greenish theme. And while speaking of the mini-display I think it's a bit too recessed so I don't see the bottom lines when looking at it from a comfortable user distance (ie I have to lean forward to get a good look of the message display).
Windows Vista was above expecations, but that was probably due to it being preinstalled with all drivers. When I tried it on my PC nothing seemed to work as intended. Two of the default programs crashed on me (I think it was Power4Phone and the on that switches some kind of profile based on network connectivity) but I'm gonna have a look at all of them to see which can safely be removed anyway.
Sound from built in speakers is loud but sharp and there's ofcourse no bass and hardly any mid reg either. Not a problem for me since I'd use headphones in any sitation where I'm actually interested in having laptop audio.
Havn't had time to try out it's software/gaming performance yet.. -
Here are my overclocking and driver updating results using Rivatuner and 3DMark06. I started off with the stock Asus G1s Vista drivers, and updated to the 165.01 vista drivers with the modified INF file, you can get these drivers at laptopvideo2go.com.
Using Rivatuner (freeware):
First I benchmarked with no overclocking and with the stock drivers:
Then I overclocked with the above settings with the same stock g1s drivers:
Then I updated the drivers to the laptopvideo2go.com ones, and benchmarked once again with no overclocking:
Finally I benched with the updated drivers AND the overclocking settings you can see at the top of my post.
Conclusion:
With the new drivers and some heavy overclocking, the G1s proves itself to be a graphical powerhouse. It manages to stay cool enough on a hard cold surface but if you're gonna be overclocking you definitely want to invest in a laptop cooler. I did these tests just on a regular old wooden table, with lots of room around the laptop's vents.
My specs are the 2.2 ghz core 2 duo that comes in the g1s, 2 gigs stock ram, and the stock 5400 rpm HDD. (nothing added as you can see)
It overclocks extremely well, and the temperatures are mild. I'm very happy with this laptop, it kicks ass to say the least. I've been enjoying company of heroes nearly maxxed out, BF2 completely maxed out, HL2 completely maxed out, and STALKER nearly maxed out.
At 4496 marks in 3DMark06, it beats the GeForce Go 7800 GTX, and gets close to the stock performance of the GeForce Go 7900 GTX. However, the new Geforce 8700m GT is reported to get 5200 marks in 3DMark06 at stock performance. So perhaps new laptop buyers might want to wait for a refresh with the 8700 or find another laptop with the 8700, its clearly a better performer in the mobile dx10 cards.
I hope this was informative! -
wow, that's awsome!those bench realy kick ass, and I can expect a 4k 1280*1024 3dmark06 bench out of the next driver upgrade.
For what I have read, the heat of the g1s is mostly at the low/back of the notebook. The Zalman 1000 someting seem to be a good cooler, but cool mostly the front of the lappy...Someone here using a cooler that is better made for the g1s heat-type? -
sweet stuff man. my friend's got a zalman cooler too i think...does that suck the heat from the laptop and ventilate it out thru the sides? also....does overclocking shorten the lifespan of ur laptop? (eg. workin and drinkin every single day without much sleep) lol cheers
-
review of zalman
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3620
looks like it sends air from sides to the main surface of the cooler, ie the bottom of the lappy
overclock stresses and heats up the components of the lappy, thus there will be a hit on lifespan. imo only overclock when u need to play crazy games, then clock it back for normal use. -
ok, I think il go with the zalman
Also, I'v seen from a lot of web site that peaple have got their g1s with STALKER(the pc game) full buntled in it...it is the case of the canadien version -
I went to Best Buy tonight to buy a G1S (which I ended up getting), but the local stores here in DFW are running the older G1 version for $1599! You don't get the bag and the mouse that comes at most places, but at that price, who cares?
I happened to luck myself into a G1S. There was another buyer there looking at the G1's at the same time. The sales rep went to check stock, and low and behold they only had 1 new in box of the older G1 version, the other was the floor model. I wasn't about to walk out with a floor model, so I asked what they could do on the newer G1S. Manager gave me $25 off of the already low $1749.99, gave me a $25 gift card, and ran the points for a Best Buy Rewards program, which gave me an additional ~$40 in gift cards. So I walked out with a brand new G1S for $1659 + tax. Pretty sweet deal on a kick as computer if you ask me! -
Nice one man. I paid 'bout 2000 for mine with shipping and tax and all.
-
I am seriously thinking of buying this. I need to know if it will have issues with my favorite games, though. Most of the stuff I've seen on the forum has been FPS shooters.
Civ4
Medieval 2
CNC3
Titan Quest
Any issues with these? -
I play alot of RTS games, the ones I have loaded and are playing well are:
Supreme Commander
Company of Heroes
CNC3
All run awesome, with most seetings on high. -
Anyone try the 101.17 WHQL drivers for the 8600m GT yet?
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/GRAPHICS-BOARD/NVIDIA/NVIDIA-ForeWare-GeForce-Go-10117-WHQL.shtml -
Hey! Think i'm going to buy a G1s today from XoticPC.
I'm thinking that everyone is happy that they have theres, but this is a damn big investment to make. The price comes to 1889.00. Good deal? -
i have a g1s and wish that asus fixed the bios

see my screen shots -
I havent tried the 101.17s. Im still using the 163.11s, but if these new ones are really WHQL signed then I might have to give them a go. Although I dont understand how the numbers labeling the drivers jump around so much, IE how can 101 be newer drivers than 163?
-
Was anyone of you guys able to install windows xp + graphic drivers on a 4 GB RAM G1S? ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=144143)
-
Is there any way to control the fan speed? I think mine is too loud even when i'm just browsing the net =/
-
Actually browsing the web is all the G1s seems to be good for! I remain to be convinced that Asus' claim to provide a "gaming laptop" actually hold water, at least where the G1s is concerned.

From an unhappy G1s gamer!!! -
I was going to go to best buy and get the g1s but on the web site it says the cpu is 7300 2.0 instead of 7500 2.2. Has anyone else got there g1s from best buy and can reassure be that it is 7500 2.2?
-
-
ok thx..so is there a store that you can get it at that everything is like its supposed to be.
-
-
what be the performance difference?
-
-
It has a slower cpu (2.0 instead of 2.2) and also doesnt include a backpack or mouse. I believe best buys G1s only includes a one year warranty. At least, thats what best buys site and other forum members have said. You can get the g1s for 1805 so you have to decide how much you need the accessories. I doubt 200mhz would make that much of a difference. The system will probably be gpu limited in games. If you use Photoshop or cpu intensive programs it may perform noticeably better. In my opinion the processor warranty and accessories are more than worth the 50 additional dollars. Consider that just the processor upgrade from 2.0 to 2.2 would cost over 100 dollars at dell or Lenovo.
-
ok thx for the help
-
-
Well, I have to say shame on me for not looking into the processor or warranty at Best Buy. It is the 2.0 Ghz, which is fine, but the warranty is only 1 year, which kind of pisses me off. I don't understand why Asus would pull a year off the warranty just to sell at BB. I understand BB wants to sell their "Geek Squad" services, which is a total crock, but it's dissapointing to see a manufacturer do that.
I didn't care about not getting the mouse or backpack, I have plenty of mice laying around (two of the same model that comes with the G1S) and already have a bag. I'm happy with the computer, this thing kicks ass. But not happy with the buying experience at Best Buy. My fault for not doing my homework. Walked in, saw the G1S, didn't read the tag, and bought it. I would return it and order it from newegg, but I'm out 15% if I do that.
Oh well, live and learn. Still a good deal at the price I bought it for. -
Hi all, did someone downloaded the new bios for Asus G1s? There are some improuvements in stability or performance?
Thanks

If you want to be technical about it, unless you live in a state that has no sales tax, you are supposed to report this. It just isn't collected automatically (yet).
-
Mind you, I haven't noticed any problems I can't ascribe to Vista, so I doubt I will be reporting back any difference I notice. -
Downloaded and updated Bios v203. No improvement or change in performance / stability so far..
