Seems like mine is like this too, maybe the keyboard is designed to be like this. :)

What do you guys use to cool your G1S? I'm thinking of cooling the lappy down, any of u guys got some good brand/model u care to share? I know each laptop is different (ie. location of the cpu/gpu) so what works best for u?

    - yeah mine has a slight hill and dip as well, but its NOT noticeable unless you're looking for it. if i didn't read it here, i wouldn't of picked up on it.

    - the light bleeding at the bottom and on black screen IS noticeable, but not bothersome or an issue.

    - notebook cooler? I use a zalman, yeah its expensive, but whatever. all i know is that the internal notebook fan doesn't kick into overdrive as often, and the zalman cooler fans are ultra quiet, can't hear 'em at low speed, which is all you need 'em at.

    - that said, I'd have to say that my notebook is very well built, and superior to the crap my friends and co-workers have purchased from repackagers like Dell & HP.

summary of my purchase: this is my first non-mainstream company notebook (ie. like Dell or HP), and i have to say, I'm impressed and I'm never going back to those again knowing what I know now. I'd buy another ASUS down the road.

    dada,
yeah i dunno about the 0% gamma suggestion either. i did remove splendid, but only brought gamma down to 40% because at 0% the screen was REALLY unreadable lol.

be sure and update your video card driver at the asus site as well.

I have a CPU fan with modified wires, which are connected to an AC plug, suspended by a holder made out of legos that blows under the notebook. HDD/CPU ~37C/~41C

Wow, so I just ordered mine. I'm curious though, has anybody tried overclocking this lappy? How did it perform? Should it be avoided due to cooling? Or is the cooling solid enough to OC it a bit?

I believe some foam padding from an old motherboard box can be applied under the keyboard, this was also an issue with the G1p.

I overclock my GPU without any extra cooling but it only does it in 3d mode according to RivaTuner. The performance boost is worth it and is something you will notice IMO. I forgot what clockspeeds but I cannot check for another two weeks :( It's Hell I know. Basically I found the most stable overclock and backed it off 5 mhz on the core + memory.

I just found a nice trick how to get a clean install-DVD for Vista that was posted within a german forum (by a user named "VfB-oléolé" just for credits). I hope it works international as well, but it for sure does in Germany:

Go to http://www.windowsanytimeupgrade.com/, select a random update and move on with your order. You are asked if you have the Anytime Update-DVD, and you of course select no. Then you are promted with an overview of your order including the Update and the DVD. Then you just remove the update you've selected, which should leave you just with the DVD and shipping/packaging costs (3,65€ in germany). When you click on order -> voilà: a clean install DVD directly from Microsoft.

I don't remember this hint being posted. If it has been posted before, i'm sorry for the double post.

Hmm, somehow I couldnt get the random update option..

The only thing which seemed remotely similar was a Vista Backup Disk DVD shipped for 15$.. Dunno if this is wat u were implying..

Okay, i will be more specific:

When i enter the site i see an overview of the upgrade options. There is a button "Buy now!" wich leads to the shop page. You can also use the Menu to the left an click on "Online-Update". The you will enter the upgrade-shop. Now you have the possibility to select the current version you are using. As we all have Vista Ultimate there is nothing to upgrade to, so you just have to select any other version (like Home Basic). So select Home Basic and on the following page choose Home Premium as the update option.

On the next page you see your shopping cart, and you are asked wether you need the Anytime Update DVD or not. Now you select "no" and click the "Order DVD"-button, because this DVD is why we are doing all this.

As soon as you click "Order DVD" this DVD will be added to your shopping card at the top. After this just remove to original update using the "X" on the right side.

Now your shopping cart should only include the Anytime Update DVD for free and the shipping costs.

Enter all your personal order and submit the order... A few days later you will receive the DVD and can run a clean install of Vista.

I know the DVD is quite cheap, but why order one, if you can make a clean install with the DVD that comes along with the Asus G1S.
The trick is not to insert the driver cd while installing.

I'm very interestend buying the Asus g1s as it would go very well with my needs. The only issue is the relativly short battery life ( about 2:30 under normal usage , right? ). Is there any chance that Asus will release a more powerful battery in the future ?

Does anyone know if ASUS has released a new bios, since the laptops initial release? It doesn't look like it on the asus drivers page but I thought I'd ask.

Just got a new G1S! Got a few questions though:
    - I can't seem to install and use 3dMark06 - it reports an error as... "Invalid bitmap format". is there anything special I need to do before I can use that?
    - Rivatune refuses to work.
    - CPU is idling at 65 degrees celsius as reported by the NHC and RMclock utilities - goes up to 75-80 when running superpi. This is not normal, is it?

    - Quite a bit of light leakage at the bottom of the screen - this a lemon or normal?

    Quick question:

Not sure if this should instead go to the OS forum, but I'll try here first:

How do I stop Windows Media Center from coming up every time I boot up my PC? It does it 80% of the time, and it is really becoming annoying.

It just starts up, right after the Vista Sidebar loads. At first when it happened a bunch of times, I thought I might have been pressing the media controls at the bottom by accident - but even when making sure I don't touch them - it still runs on startup!

I tried turning off the 'auto-start media center when Windows starts setting' and it still runs. And there are even times when I close it, then it comes up again - just after I closed it! With no input from me at all!

This is a minor gripe for sure. But it is extremely annoying.

you can try setting your computer to not let media center have access. that might cause it to not come up.

Are you using the power button at the top right side of the keyboard or the smaller button on the front below the keyboard?

The smaller button turns on the system and launches media center. Also, try doing a shutdown from the start menu and then turning back on with the upper right power button (you may be sleeping or hibernating your system and then restarting it with media center loaded).

    Good luck,
    Ira

Nyahahaha. That is exactly it!! I use the power button on the bottom.

    LOL, I'm laughing so hard - I can't believe I couldn't figure that out.

I once wondered why they had to put 2 power buttons in there.

    Thanks!!

Would be interested in the answer to this too.

I just noticed that when I'm running Company of Heroes - it won't let me select the DirectX 10 thingie in the graphics settings.

Not that I have any problems with the way it currently looks - but hey, afterall, I've got an 8600GT+Vista, might as well try and see how it looks.

When I first got the computer I had a score of 4.4. with the processor at 4.7.

The next day I used the computer and it said that I had new hardware installed and to redo the test. Even though i hadn't installed any new hardware, I ran it again and now it shows 4.8 with the processor at 5.1.

I took of some of the bloatware from startup with msconfig. Maybe that's it?
    I have a segate momentus 7200rpm 160gb HD with 3GB ram.

On the second page someone was saying that if you had 3gb of memory it was not DDR2? Is this true? Did they give me the wrong memory? I originally paid for 4gb, but a lady from xopc called me back and said that any 32bit operating system could recognize it. They gave me the extra $ back and put in 3gb.

Anyone know if 3gb is only DDR instead of DDR2?

    thanks

Hi guys. I own the G1S and I like it very much. However, it just seems that the lcd screen is a little strange : indeed the screen is much brighter at the bottom.

Actually it is not a real problem but I must "perfectly face" the screen so that I'm not annoyed with it...
Did any of you noticed this ?

    Thx

It sounds like your refering to the light leaking out the bottom, its a known issue, but I think the generally established idea is it's not really fixable, and only noticeable on a black screen

I think what you are trying to say is that 3GB is not in fact dual channel, versus DDR2. I can't see any manufacturer putting normal DDR into this notebook, if for anything other then to scam you. But, that's not going to happen, so what people are saying is: Dual channel offers more bandwidth than not running in dual channel. The problem comes in when vista 32bit(the preinstalled version) can only use about 3.3gb of ram, assuming you have 4gb. That's why people are saying you should either stick with 2GB or go to 64 bit. I myself am considering going to 64 bit, simply because the stock hard drive isn't very fast spinning, and 64 bit utilizes the processor better, to the point that it could somewhat make a difference in performance.

Oh, and about your vista experience numbers, try not to take those to heart. Look at the numbers on your hardware, not what your MS operating system is telling you. There are still some gliches in that program, in my opinion, because I've had differing results every time I've used the thing.

Got mine today too...it's really sweet. It's amazin' lookin'; pictures don't do it justice.

I have one question though: i heard on this site that norton antivirus is bloatware so i'm probably going to remove it; but is there a good (preferably free) antivirus program that I should put on here that won't take up too much resources?

O, and does anyone have any suggestions on demos that I should download to test this machine?

I will have to check that out when I get home from work, I know if I close the lid (hybernate) and open it up, all I have to do is press the power button to wake it up, if that is what your referring to.? I dont remember it entering sleep via screen-saver so I'll test it out...Also the new drivers I think the 165.35 or something are bugged, but so far I havent seen any issues with 165.01

Is there a way to prevent the computer from shutting down, when I close the LCD?
    Some setting that I've missed?

It doesn’t shut down, but rather goes to sleep. Anything you are doing will be saved. The feature is used by laptops to save power. Just hit the power button and it restores windows and anything you were doing.

symantic is a great anti-virus program, the problem is the entire suite that's bundled with it. It's very system intensive. If you can't get just the Symantic AV by it's self, then go for a free av like avast..
