    No Worries.

Also Asus have released new drivers for the F3. They are under the F3SC section of there downloades pages.

It looks like it means FULL support now for WIN XP on the F3SV. We don't need to use old drivers.

    Vista should hibernate fine.

If not do a search on GOOGLE, if there is a problem google should have the answer.

Thanks for the post, that's great news!

I'm really leaning towards purchasing this notebook. It's my favorite so far, and XP is my prefered OS right now.

Everyone seems to really like it that owns it, and Asus seems like a great company.

Anybody want to help talk me into the purchase? :D

id like them to release linux drivers, that would be sweet if i could have a really nice set of drivers for linux. Although, as it is linux is running really well on my laptop, i even got most of the Fn keys to work, and the memory card reader.

well it depends on what you are needing a laptop for, but i my laptop, and if i had a second chance to buy one, id buy it again :)

Mostly general use, and occasional gaming, such as CSS and WoW, and some basic strategy games, I'm not really a big gamer.

Also, I'm wanting to get back to Linux, and really learn it, and get to using it as a dual boot on this notebook.

Would you recommend it for these things?

    Thanks! :D

that sounds almost exactally how i use my notebook (other than WoW, i dont do that) i play CSS and C&C on here, and i find linux is working great (i can actually play CSS with very little difference from playing it on vista)

i think fedora is the best running linux version for this notebook, ive tried almost all of them. I think it has to do with the always updating kernel.

It apears to be a problem with the adapter. anyways I live in norway and I called asus about it. They said it would take up to 3 weeks for them just to test my adapter.

no, i dont even know what it is... is it free? cuz if it is i could probably test it out minimally

3 weeks?? wow, that sucks must be the shipping time or something (do they need to send it to the USA?)... here (north america) they have overnight shipping and quick servicing as far as im aware..

A quick question, on my F3SV it sais it needs a 19v / 4,74A / 90W power input. However from alot of retailers in Norway they sell a 65W AC adapter as an accessory.
Question is this: Would I hurt my machine if I use a 19v / 3,42A / 65W adapter? i have one laying around from my old Zepto notebook and it has the same connection. I tried plugging it in and it seems to charge. I just dont want to accidently destroy my notebook.

Slackware is a GNU Linux Distro. AFAIK it is the very first after the original Linux published by Linus Torvalds in 1991. "Slack" was released in 1993, and has been consistently developed and going strong since. It's more of a minimalist, unobtrusive Distro, very true to it's Unix heritage, and leaves much choice and flexibility up to the admin/user. It's really a legend in it's own time, you should check it out!

It's not a "hold your hand" kind of Distro. It's like the opposite of Ubuntu in that way, but more transparent, and more customizable where it really counts to the power user.

    Check these links,
    Distro Watch
    Slackware Home Page

You won't hurt your machine by using a 19v / 3,42A / 65W. Notebook will run fine as output voltage is still 19V.
What you will find though is that the 65W adapter will get very, very hot as it supplies only 3.42A when notebook needs to draw 4.74A. That is, your adapter won't last very long.
Better to get an adapter that outputs 19V/6.3A/120W.

I need some help. I finally gave up on Vista and went back to XP Pro. I seem to have everything working except a few things. According to Device Manager I'm missing drivers for: Fingerprint Sensor, Unknown Device and USB 2.0. My only real concern is my wireless doesn't work with my router(DIR-655). It does however work on my landlords router(not sure the model but it's a G router). I installed the 4965AGN driver 1.11.1.1. Everytime I try to connect to my router it gives me a message saying: Windows in unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again. I'm 5' from the router! Any ideas what's up??

hah, of course the winXP drivers come out after i spent all this time messing with older drivers(which are all working finally).

    I have one more issue:
is it possible to put the power mode into 'super performance' without having the AC plugged in?

Some of the latest games(Bioshock, Stalker) and even older games that Im running on max settings require me to me in super mode for proper performance. Sure this will reduce my usage time, but I dont mind, as long as I can play it eh?
Also, anyone know the exact difference between High and Super performance?

My b1 just started making a very high pitch sound. The sound is so annoying that I end up shutting it off before I go insane. Seems to do it plugged in and on battery power. It also seems to do it on every powerplan. Has anyone else had this happen? I'm waiting to hear back from Asus on this.

    Hi,

My F3SV-AK118G has the 1Gb NAND Turbo Memory, with ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive both enabled.

Is their any additional benefit/performance in disabling the ReadyBoost on the NAND memory, and enabling ReadyBoost on a 1Gb SD-card and leave it in permanantly?

    Thanks.

The TurboMem option might be faster, because you aren't going to be stuck with the bus interface on the SD slot, but I'm not sure. Either way, I don't think you would be able to tell the difference between the two in daily function/use.

I can't seem to overclock my video card. All of nVidia's tools say my 8600M GS has 500/400 clocks, which is really low, and if I try to change them, they reset to their normal values on hitting "apply." Is this REALLY how low the clock speeds are, or do they actually go up during a game, which I can't prove anyway? And how do I change them without the thing undoing my work?

I've been following this thread for some time now, and there's some useful hints here and there, but too messy to keep track over.
I've made a guide regarding installation of Windows XP on the Asus F3Sv.
The guide is here. Post comments in the thread.

I agree... very messy. Could someone post a link to installing LINUX on the F3SV..

I am new to linux, and the guides ive found so far, are very imtimidating. Interested in versions of linux which have Beryl installed. Been running fedora core 5 in VMWare for a unix class, but it only identifies a few pieces of the hardware in the laptop.

try fedora 7 x64, you must use the text installer, but i like that way better anyway. Im using it right now, and i have almost everything working (excluding the webcam and the fingerprint reader, but i have not really tried at the webcam so it may be possible to get working)

and, i do believe there is a new fedora (8) release coming out early november? (if im wrong someone please correct me). Ubuntu has a new release coming out in like 4 days too, so you might want to wait for that. I have high hopes for that because the pre-releases worked really well for this laptop.

o yah, and if you need help ill do my best to help you get it installed

    C2D T7300 2ghz, 15.4" 1680x1050, 2gb, 250gb, Vista Premium, GF8600gs.
    about 1305euro incl. "shipping"..

Its looking very nice, much better in real life than on pictures.. :)

Im also interested in trying this with XP , will that work well?
Will a new install of Vista help on the performance? and how do i reinstall vista? theres a asus recovery-dvd included, but how do i start the dvd??

buy vista and do it? there really was no bloatware on this machine, so there isnt really much to worry about.. Just delete the stuff that you dont like such as powerforphone, TMP (or something like that), etc... (but make sure your not going to use them, some of that stuff can be neat)

the only thing that the recovery disk doesnt have included on it that was on your computer when you got it is nero, but you got another cd with that on it.

Is it possible to install a new notebook video card in the F3SV? After some research, I've learned that the 8600M GS is not only a crap card by itself, but has been completely gimped in the F3SV. Serves me right for not doing proper research...

It's a DX10 card that chokes on modern DX9 games (re: SupComm, UT3's demo, and similar games). That sounds like garbage to me. Further, it's clocked at 500/400 core/mem (though the mem may or may not be doubled in actuality). Go look up the ACTUAL clocks on nVidia's site. Go ahead, I dare you. I'll wait...

... You back yet? Good, because I still need an answer to my question, please =P Can you install a new graphics chipset like in certain Dell laptops (like my ol' Inspiron 8200 way back when)?

As far as I know, Asus would have to produce their own, and up to now they have not, nor have I heard that they will, so if I were you, and it's not to late I'd return it, or else sell it and buy something with at least a bit more powerful GPU.

Notebooks with the ATI HD Mobility 2600 or the NVIDIA 8600 GT can be had for reasonable prices if you have a real budget in mind.

We've had the "GF8600M GS is sooo underclocked" conversation a million times, so to summarize:

The 8600M GS in the F3SV is actually performing as an 8400M GT. It is underclocked because of the design of the laptop. You can OC if you want, but not too much.

If you add some more RAM to make it a total of 3GB, it can actually perform better than an G1S 8600M GT w/2GB.

So really its not that bad if you just get some more memory. And if youre that picky, you might as well get a lappy with an 8600M GT running on GDDR3 memory or wait for the 8700M Gt.
