I really dont know whether im not doing as many things as you guys are with your F3SV but i use mine for gaming, documents, internet etc... and i have not come across any issues you guys talk about. I have the F3SV-AK118G (AUS) with Vista Ultimate 32bit and i have no issues with it at all.

Only issue i had was playing the original install of FarCry but patch 1.4 fixed the blue hazy screen problem.

^your on vista, aka not the best of OSs, i believe that anyone that has a problem is using another OS on their lappy (ie. XP, Linux)

Yeah but is Vista really that bad that everyone wants to change to another OS? Like i said before i hae not had a problem with it and it seems to run fine and do things that my XP laptop would do.

On a "personal" opinion i find it interesting and funky and works quite well. I even installed it on my Toshiba laptop also and it worked right away without any tweaking. Like i said, that's my opinion so please dont flame me for it..hehe

well not to flame on u, but there are compatibility issues when it comes to some applications and also when u play games there is about a ~10% decrease in performance if im not mistaken... :)

    Hi Everybody ©Dr Nick

I just got my A-1 today. This post helped me to decide to get it. Thanks guys.

If I download the modded drivers for the 8600 will I notice a big improvement over the Asus drivers?

What programs should I uninstall that are not necessary?

Thanks for the help. I can tell already this machine kicks ass.

good to hear, but if i were you i would play around with the latest modded drivers as well as the latest from asus, it all depends on what type of games you play, some ive noticed play rts games better but dont perform as well with fps games, and vice versa.

im not about to answer what programs to uninstall again though :p (it depends on the person if you ask me, some are actually useful)

well since bioshock is a fps game, id recommend the asus drivers. i find it plays counterstrike better than the laptopvideo2go ones, so im going to assume it is the same for bioshock.

well, this thread is kinda dead...

just thought id let everyone know there is a new BIOS out (v207) you might want to check it out, there are a couple of fixes

    Code:
     	BIOS 207
Fix “VGA device will disappear under win XP when system installs DRAM over 3G”.
Fix “System will fail if boot to OS by instant On, enter S4, then press power button to resume from S4”.

Is there any reason you would ask if there was a way more of your ram would be used? This almost seems like a joking question considering you had to have put the ram in yourself, or had someone else do it for you. Your ram is used when it is needed, so just open up a lot of programs and you'll use more ram, and slow your computer...

yeah, the only real difference in the models is the screen resolution and the B1 has a better processor (so, yes that BIOS will work for you on an X1)

it will use it as needed, you cant force it to use more than it needs.

anybody tell me how to flash the bios to the new verion as i dont have floppies???

it depends on when you got your laptop, mine came with 206 i beleive, but people who got theirs before me had an earlier versoin. I would try 206.

why do you want do go back?

and, yeah my f3sv is really quiet, i cant even tell the fan is on, never really noticed it so i dont even know if its running or not.

Don't know for laptops, but Motherboard's bios usually come in the floppy format and Asus also gives us a .iso one, to use to burn a CD. I'm pretty sure you can use flash memory rather than floppy

Can someone please tell me the memory brand and spec information for the 1024MB stick that is standard in the F3SV-A1 so I can try to match it? I am sorry this has probably been answered before but this thread is massive and I'm not sure how to use search to search this single thread. Thanks!!!!! :D

why not just get a stick of normal 200pin laptop RAM? as long as it has a lifetime warranty i dont see a downside (unless it is slower RAM)

but, i got a question for anyone who bought theirs during the rebate period... have you received your rebate yet?

Just check the BIOS options... its in there somewhere (at least it is if you've upgraded it).

EDIT: Since it just crashed (read below), I decided to look in the BIOS for you on boot. Go over one tab to "Advanced" and then select "IDE Configuration" (the first option, just press enter). For SATA operation Mode select Compatible. I'm not entirely sure if that will work (never done it), but it should.

I purchased my F3SV-B1 at the end of June. I have had so many problems with it, its not even funny. I would say, the problems are mostly Vista's fault, but I might just have a faulty hard drive.

To start off, the hardware is great ('cept the hdd). I have had no problems with the graphics card (in windows). My main irk is with Vista. I can honestly say it crashes at least 3 times a day.

At first, it was freezing up, and reset without a problem. After a week or two of that, though, the hard drive started reporting errors. Soon after, it completely died. I could no longer boot into Vista (I could boot into Linux, but without nvidia support, I couldn't do what I wanted).

After numerous attempts to reinstall Vista I realized that there were probably some corrupted sectors. I thought, maybe I can partition around the bad sectors. So I partitioned off 20GB from the beginning of the drive and was able to install vista and linux on the remaining ~130GB.

Obviously, this isn't an optimal solution, but at least I have a working OS (with a working GUI). Every time I boot I get a message like "Your hard drive reports a SMART error and may crash."

Concerning linux support, I have gotten the best results from Sabayon 3.4f (an easy-install port of Gentoo). Wireless drivers work straight out of the box. I had a problem with ethernet drivers in vanilla Gentoo, but the driver 'atl1' is what you want for the F3SV. I have not been able to get nvidia drivers to work (i've tried the newest version 100.14.19 and still no go). The problem has been reported in many threads on many forums around the net, but still seems to gather very little attention. What happens, when I try to start X, the laptop completely freezes. No if-ands-or-butts about it, I must do a hard reset (hold the power button down for a few seconds).

I have read many theories on why this happens, the latest being that vesafb causes the error. I've recompiled my kernel with no framebuffer support, but still no go.

Anyway, the vesa driver works, but only has a max resolution of 1024x768 (which is very uncomfortable to use). So if anyone has any links about information pertaining to my problem, that would be great.

The reason I haven't called Asus yet is 1) It would really hurt my ego if I can't solve the problems myself :) and 2) I've been quite busy. My question about Asus support is: must I ship them my laptop to get a new hard drive? Or, will they even replace my hard drive?

Well, this is my general purpose Asus F3SV-B1 rant.

EDIT: Oh, the irony. It just crashed after I posted this.... :(

hey thanks for the tip, i was able to install winXP with only one problem. I cant get the sound to work. The audio bus drivers are installed but when i run the realtek drivers (the one from asus, and another WDM_R169 i found) i get: install realtek audio driver failure ....which doesnt explain much. The device is also acting strange in that it wont let me choose a place to select the drivers from within XP or to 'update' them
EDIT: actually I can select a source for the drivers but regardless it ends with: cannot install

wow, thats of crashing... im guna say its a hard driver problem too, but ive heard many people say that asus will get your laptop back to you in like 2-3 days, pick it up at your doorstep and even pay for shipping.

i beleive my gpu temps were like 70 in idle, cpu temps are like 48 on idle, and no my fan was not running crazy like yours (but i forgot my laptop in a friends trunk :'( so ill get back to you on this)

sadly ive yet to receive my $50...

    -----

you acutally need to update your XP aka use the windows update and update all the way then uninstall w/e you have installed for the audio, and reboot then run the driver installation again and it shuld work...

    -----

    im using 163.16 from laptopvideo2go...
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14302

when i have it plugged in my idle temps are ~70 with an external monitor running, dont know if that makes a difference, but with it running on battery power mine runs ~65, but i did replaced the thermal paste...

yeah, i got it figured out. What ya gotta do is uninstall the UAA drivers then install the audio. Found it posted on some other forum and it worked for other users as well. Might wanna make of note of it on page 21 if that user is still around, would save others time.

Another issue im having is assigning the hotkeys within WinXP. Is there an asus utility I need to use the 'quick' keys up top?? and can the 'media' keys on the cursors be used to control other players besides MS' media player? this is funny because the microsoft keyboard i have on my desktop can be used for any media player without additional config.

argh, i cant get the wireless drivers to work within winxp now. is there a trick to this? I downloaded the f3jv drivers for xp again and it just keeps saying 'cant install' or 'cannot start this device (code 10)'
    any ideas?
EDIT: i got it fixed. You cant use the JV drivers as stated by that guy on page 23, that page is more headache than its worth. Goto Intels site and download the XP version of the drivers found on Asus' site (cant recall model#)

So I have had my F3SV now for about a week and a half. This morning when I got to school the machine was just dead. When I connect the power coord there is no light or anything. All I did was move it from home to school in a backpack as I have done with my old laptop for the last two years. Is this computer very fragile or am I just unlucky?

speaking of hibernating- my asus f3sv (running xp) doesn't like to hibernate..it just turns off the screen for a while.. then comes back saying the system does not have sufficient resources api or something. stand by works fine tho.. Could it be some sort of memory error?

I assume that you are running 2gig or more of memory.
This is a known problem with xp. I used to have the same issue.
    The system just won't hibernate.

Here is the link to where you can find KB909095 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/909095

All you need to do is run the KB file and all is good. Your system will hibernate once again.

    Cheers

Has anyone heard any word from ASUS as to an ETA on WinXP dirvers for this notebook.

All i know is that they plan on releasing them. The Tech i spoke to didn't have any more info than that.

I hope it's soon. I need to do a rebuild.
