I think that small green led that tells you that the camera is on is the led light. I thought it meant an actual light as well, but I guess not.

Can anyone tell me if the F3Sv has the option to enable VT (Virtualization Tech) extensions in the bios?

Also, has anyone checked battary wear (I believe Everest can do this) to see if the previous asus battary problems are no more?

    Tx!

Thank you Mongatard and Fittersman for the replies. Yes the light I'm talking about is the rectangle light above the green camera on light shown on the ASUS web site, and in the manual. I take it that it was not included in the North American version. Thanks again.

alright..so i've been using this guy for a few days already and I'm pretty satisfied at everything except for its apparant underclocked GPU settings. on the v2 thread they were discussing how the f3sv was tuned down by ASUS...my stock settings are at 400/500 and i cant get over 500/600 stable. supposedly the real 8600gs can go much higher...have we been ripped off? or is there a nice driver or smth which can let us oc well?

i dont think TPM has anything to do with the fingerprint reader, its ASUS security protect manager or something like that, check under all programs and under one of hte ASUS lists it should be in there (sorry i cant verify that though, im on Fedora right now)

Start up ASUS security protect manager...and once the programs up and running browse around until you find something that says "register credentials" Follow the wizard from there.

PS. The sensor is quite finicky and you have to get the knack of using it. I find that you need to scan slow and hard. So be sure to put some pressure into the sensor. Also...draw your finger back slowly. Start from relatively the same point each time on your finger. I usually start a few mm back from my finger tip.

PPS. Dont forget to scan a couple of fingers of each hand.

did you look through all the ASUS folders? and it should have started up the first day you logged on too, if you really cant find it go to the asus site and download and install it again.

sorry, but once again i am on fedora so i cant really help you much

EDIT: i guess i can help you a bit, the actual folder is in Program files -- ASUS Security Center, which file you need to execute though i dont know...

I wanted to ask what Drivers everyone is using to get the max out of there 8600m GS.
This thead has reports of people getting over 2700 on stock speed with 3dmark06.
I am struggling to get over 2200.
I am running XP but i can't see VISTA giving you a 500 point difference. It must be driver related.

Finially can someone please clear something up for me.
In rivaturner it is reporting Mem bus speed as 399.2mhz. Shouldn't it be about 800mhz given that is is DDR2. I know it is a bit of a newbie question but it is driving me up the bend, can someone check this on there's
Could this be why i am getting such crapy performance.

1.control panel, then in the top corner there is a search feature, type in 'power' and then read down a bit and it should have something like change what closing the lid does

    2. i just unzipped a 6.11MB file in like 2 seconds, doesnt seem too bad to me, are you doing it when you first logon and stuff is still loading? or do you have lots of stuff running at the same time? i noticed that you cant do anything when you first logon, and if you do it will take way longer than it should

You have to check the manufacturer of the cam first. Go to your device manager - webcam - and then in some dropdown box you'll find "manufacturer"

Once you know the manufacturer, head over to the ASUS site and grab the latest drivers for your specific cam.

Well now that I have just gotten a new F3SV-B1 I am wondering if I should take the 15% restocking hit and return it for the G1S. This issue of the performance of the 8600M is a big disapointment. I would have attributed much of these GPU issues to Vista since I know from my destop experience its just a mess for gaming but it sure seems that even once Vista is improved we won't be much better off. Not to be to critical since I should have done even more research but are we sure this GPU can't be upgraded? Nothing I have read says it can but has anyone actualy taken the heatsink off and looked?

Hi guys been a copule of days for me to get the full grip of this laptop. Couple of things which is getting up my nose.

    1. GPU Drivers, I have downloaded colin mcrae dirt and can only play this on medium settings, what drivers do I need to download to at least Improve performance.

    2. Bluetooth compatibility Problems- Everytime I turn on my bluetooth Vista is asking for drivers???? Where are they, they are not on my CD Drivers nor the harddrive.

    3. Battery Life. It is very poor. I only get 1hr20mins. What can I do?

    4. Webcam problems. I have the D-MAX, (STK-1135) and can't find any of these on the asus site.

    Thanks

Is the cam actually in use by any other programs? IM console? Wbb browser?

If not...then check to make sure your tv tuner is unplugged if you are running one. On a system such as the asus A7S, even if media center is off, but your cable or antenna is still plugged in, it will use the signal from the tv tuner in place of your cam signal.

Verify that and then get back to us. If nothing, then also try with the latest drivers

When updating cam drivers, make sure you get the correct drivers. The cam can be made by one of several companies each requiring separate drivers. Once in your device manager, check the device properties for your cam, and you should see the name of the manufacturer. It might say D-max, or chicony for instance.

Yesterday, when my rivatuner was still working, it displayed my vid card temp as 72 c on idle, and when I moved around for like 30 seconds it rose to 83-84 degrees, Is this normal? Could rivatuner be displaying the wrong temps? I'm using drivers 163.16 atm.

In fact what is the most accurate temperature monitor for the 8600gs on the f3sv right now? I've been having lots of problems with rivatuner lately, in fact you can catch my help post on the gaming and software section lol

anybody uses Colin to clean the screen? A hardware store guy recommended me to use Colin. I used it for the exteriors but for screen I bought an expensive solution + wiper. I cant afford it again so was wondering if Colin can be used on screens.

(Colin isnt a person. Some cleaning thing we get here in India. I will get its details when i reach home)

    Hey guys

I have decided the F3SV is for me. I want to play DX10 games on medium settings, edit video/photography and do regular word processing. I would like the system to last about 2 years ideally and be fairly mobile.

However when reading the print ads and websites here in Aus we have the suffix -AK118G and -AK136G, NOT the A/B suffix mentioned in this thread. I have examined both the specs and cannot for the life of me find the difference between the 2 except the price. So I am going to post them here and hope someone more technically savvy can tell me the difference

im not going to lie, i didnt compare them fully (just the main parts) but what probably happened is the store you are looking at just posted up the same stats for all the f3sv models (the store i bought from did that as well). So it is up to you to do some research on the actual models (here is a good place to start, i have heard a few members talk about their f3sv's with endings like that)

    Hey Fitters

I thought that as well, however I checked 5 suppliers all say the same thing, that is when they even have the specs on their websites!

Does anyone know if there is an official(trusted) spec guide for these particular models online? The asus website just gives generic specs. Forewarned is forearmed as they say, unfortunately most stores in aus have this supercilious approach to customers assuming they know zip and will not answer questions.. especially from a girl.

    shivtae...

call asus. youre best best is to speak to tech support, but notebook pre-sales might be just as knowledgeable. if you call tech support then claim to have the AK118G, and just ask them what the difference is between yours and the AK136G.

id give you a phone number...but i only have the N. american number. Someone else on here can quickly get you the phone number you need. Im presuming youre in australia...but am probably wrong...correct me

All just want to make a quick comment about my earlier post wishing for better gaming performance from the 8600M.

No matter what my disappointment is with gaming performance I do have to say after spending several hours this weekend using this notebook I can't help but comment on how nice the display is. It is absolutely drop dead gorgeous.

talk to asus about that one maybe, might not be a good idea to mention it was left on in a bag, maybe they will repair/replace it for you. I doubt you will be able to do anything to make it better yourself

Is anyone aware of a 9-cell battery for the F3Sv and any online vendors selling it?

Its been 2 months and three days since I first touched my F3SV.. Thought its time for a mini review..

    What I Like :
    1) Simple and elegant look
    2) Rock solid built
    3) The awesome screen
    4) The Keyboard
    5) The speakers (is it only me.. or is it really a bit too loud and clear for a laptop? esp after the updated drivers)
    6) Very less heat relatively

    Things I dont like :
    1) The screen not being helpful for my design works. It looks so good on the screen that i am always disappointed when I see the same work on my desktop monitor.. not ideal for web design
    2) Vista (the login problem is embarassing especially when I show the laptop to someone. Though not really the machine's fault)
    3) The Weight (of course it doesnt feel much inside a backpack but it sure is on the heavier side)

overall very satisfied.. If I had a time machine and go back 2 months, I still would have chosen this!!

    Hey zeu569

Thanks for the post, but upon reading the specs for the F3SV-AK118G you linked, it says Nvidia go 8600M G. G what? GS, or GT? Sorry to be so insistant but this is the precise problem I am having.

Retailers either describe it as above for both the F3SV-AK118G and F3SV-AK136G or they list the video card as the GS for both models.. yet there is still this $150 difference between the two models.

Matt from another post mentioned it might be that the AK136G has actually got the GT in it like the Vs1's do in our country(Australia), but noone can tell me for sure.. so any aussies out there with this lappy can you lend assistance?

EDIT: OMG I think I finally found the difference http://www.asusnotebook.com.au/business-notebook.php

The F3SV-AK136G seems to be the "new version" with "1Gb Robson turbo memory" Can someone tell me what that actually means, intel says "overcoming HDD bottlenecks and improving multi-tasking performance x 2" anyone got some realworld feed back about that?
