From what I understand, the reason that the 12GB and 20GB have 2 drives is so that they can have a fast 4GB drive for the os and a slower (cheaper) one for files, the reason the 16GB models are cheaper is because they only come with the slower one, and if you read reviews you'll see that it's unbearably slow, it can take up to 5 times longer for things to load... in the reviews for the 16GB one on newegg, many people regret getting it...

Does anyone know if the newer 1000h drive is faster than the 80GB?
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Its a 80gb Seagate Momentus that comes in the 80gb model. Not sure what the 160gb one has in it. -
I think the new model ships with the Momentus 160GB. Unconfirmed, though.
My 1000H (80GB model) is coming here Friday -
ok so I hope no one kills me if this question have ben asked before...lol
so here goes:
"so on my Eee PC 901 doesn't have any other languages installed and I want to install like Korean, Chinese, and Japanese languages (or more) and I don't think I have the XP CD...all it came with is this XP support DVD Rev 1.0...(wait is this that xp cd??? lol ) and since Eee doesn't have this optical drive...and I've read somewhere that it can be done with a USB stick...well I got a 8GB stick and ...well...what do I do???"
and it tells me to insert a XP home edit Service pack 3 CD and well ...anyways...anyone? -
Two super dumb questions hope they haven't been asked before.
1. Can I output the 1000H to a digital projector at 1024x768 (for power point presentations)?
2. Does the 1000H have Express Gate built in like other new ASUS "notebooks"?
Kind regards
Lee -
@ Leebaldock: 1- It should from what I have read. 2-No, only the 'regular' netbook ports are included, from what I have read.
I have a dumb questions that I am pondering:
1. I am getting a 1000H, now for the HDD size because both are identical models. Since the 160GB has more density, wouldn't it be quicker in comparison to a 80GB? I read the posts above and basing it off of the high density-high capacity drive figures, but then again I could be totally off.
2. The extra $30 seems like a KILLER deal to double the size, but to be used as a companion and such, 80 GB is a hell of a lot of space, even with some movie rips and a sizable music collection. Anyone finding those 80GB eaten up quick?
Thank you,
Soon to be EEE 1000H Owner -
Sorry meant Splashtop - is Splashtop included in the 1000H?
-
@ Leebaldock: No, no splashtop, but I wish. It is an ingenious idea with a currently limited consumer presence. This idea has been around for a while and using linux is a compromise in some situations. With my 1000h, I will load up EEE Buntu and probably use that primarily. I am going to put some games and such on it, then I will use windows, but Linux is the way to go for a quick bootup and painless use.

My Eee just came in yesteday! Officially part of the Eee Owners Club now
-
Congratulations, I should be ordering one this weekend after I ferret out the hdd size/price issue
Edit: Just reading a review of the N10 and saw that it comes with an optical drive.? For an extra $100 dollars over the 1000H that seems to be a killer deal. Anyone with different information as I could not find verification of this anywhere else, not even Gentech's site.

I think your refering to the N20 a 12" model with a slot loader optical drive.
I like the N10, now that I saw a video of it, it does not look as bad as I thought it did (I mean actual looks) but still your looking for about 50% more money currently to get a N10 over the EEE 1000H ~$400 vs ~$600 and the only gains are: finger print reader, dedicated graphics (not very strong card ether), and I think it comes stock with a bigger HDD & 2gb ram.
I would love to play with one but do not think I would bite with the cost that high. I prefer the all black (well I wanted white..) of the EEE still and 2gb ram is as cheap as $13 these days, and I had a spare 250gb laying around (the ram too actually )
If they can manage to get the N10 model with the graphics for $100 more than the EEE 1000H I think thats about right and I would then put more thought into it.
I got my EEE all setup now, rocket dock with all the shortcuts I need with auto hide, and my taskbar is auto hide so not a single icon on my desktop, looks so clean! With the low res I really like it like that. I used crystal XP to change the interface to be like Vista instead of XP and I like it so far, and I had some really cool themes with window blinds (the dragon one was cool)
Its running my emulators like a champ, and I do not think the dedicated gpu of the N10 would help much as the cpu would still hold it back.
Im very surprised by the loudness and quality of the speakers on it. Overall I just love the EEE and think it was a great purchase.
edit to share my desktop:
Stock XP install with rocket dock & crystal xp
The dock and my taskbar are set to auto hide so you see nothing at all but the wallpaper most of the time I just pulled them up for the screenshot. -
Zip Zoom Fly has their sale back on for the 160G...had to do it at that price, plus free shipping.

Out of stock already
I got both of mine at Gentech, I got the older 80gb models since they were cheaper and the 160gb was not out yet (and also at that point was unsure about what kind of battery you get -
I wonder if they would honor the sale price if you ordered while out of stock. I am thinking about getting one for my mom, and while she would only need the 80GB, the 160GB at the same price would be nice.
Edit: Just read closer, an important thing to do, and saw you could only hit "Notify Me", not order. Well I hope my order is all good and still in-stock at my spot in line. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
I just got a back in stock notice in my email about an hour ago, and went to the page and it still says out of stock lol.
So ether it went VERY fast, or they did not update the page yet. -
Hah, back to the old, $0.99 rebate. I think what they are doing is every 3 or so days when they receive a large shipment in, then are putting it on rebate and letting it sell out, then resetting their stock and pricing. I am surprised they are doing it with the 160 GB and not the 80GB. If they dropped that to $400, they would get rid of back stock and then only have to carry the 160.

Never been one to use add ons since I am easy to please and usually stick with stock programs but due to the small screen I have started hunting firefox add ons.
I have more space now and things are better when surfing.
stopandreloadbutton - puts the two buttons into one giving you more horizontal space for the address bar.
autohide status bar - status bar shows while page is loading or when you hover over a link but otherwise is hidden so more page view space.
flashblock - flash stuff wont load for much faster browsing and if you want to see it just click on it and tell it to load.
faviconizetab - just shows the icon of the website when you have multiple tabs open, click the icon for full name. Lets you have more sites open easier.
googlepreview - adds a thumbnail image to google searches so you can see what the site is like.
the only one left that I hear good things about is tab mix plus, it gives you a ton of tab options including the ability to reopen acidentally closed tabs, but due to that nature I would think it may use up resources. I have no problems with youtube videos and things like that, that others have said lag and i think it may in large part be due to the fact my system is so clean with almost nothing eating away at resouces.
I will also tell you the BEST thing ever, a program called autohotkey.
Its a script based program like glovepie that I use for my wiimote that lets you do almost anything with your keys. Remap them, use them to launch programs, to act as mouse clicks ect.
Well the big problem I had was the strange right shift key I hated the fact that its where it is and you hit the up arrow key instead all the time. So many people were using programs like sharpkeys or editing the registry to swap the up arrow key and the right shift key, problem is its rather purmanent.
Well this program a guy wrote me a script where pushing the windows key + z at the same time swaps the up arrow & up arrow key, then press it again to toggle back! now i can finally touch type with easy, and not lose my arrow key function for emulators and spreadsheet.
here is the code he wrote for me: (I want to learn this script so I can change the toggle keys to something else and also this program has soooo much potential)
Code:#InstallKeybdHook ;Hotkeys: ; # Windows, ! Alt, ^ Ctrl, + Shift #z:: CoordMode, ToolTip, Screen if (arrowmode=1) { arrowmode=0 ToolTip, Shift Mode, 1, 1 Sleep 1000 ToolTip } else { arrowmode=1 ToolTip, Arrow Mode, 1, 1 Sleep 1000 ToolTip } return *up:: if(arrowmode=1) Send {blind}{up} else { Send {RShift Down} KeyWait, up Send {RShift Up} } return
In addition be sure to have the task bar on auto hide and your good to go. -
You forgot the most important Firefox addon ever: Adblock Plus.

I will post up some of mine:

All-In-One Sidebar
Closy

IE Tab

Is there any USB boot-option in 1000H ?
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Yeah, hit esc key at post and you can choose to boot from usb.
I used my usb flash drive with acronis on it to clone my 80gb stock drive to a 250gb external drive, and then swapped the drives out. -
Just got to my EEE 1000H tonight, and it is FRIGGIN AWESOME. The one thing I wish I had done was setup an acronis hidden partition for recovery. I started installing everything and since I don't have a usb cd drive, I am kinda sol if something happens. Anyone have any ideas about how I could create this partition from the dvd on my main laptop with an optical drive and use an external to implant it in? or is the only way to reinstall xp, make a copy, then install it into the hidden partition?
Thank you for your help. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Hmm can you not just make a drive image and then transfer it over to the other laptop? That would work just as good as a hidden partition I think.

Make sure anybody with the 1000H gets a few things:
Newest Touchpad Drivers - http://www.elantech.com.tw/driver/ETD7.0.3.8_ps2drv_x86.rar
These add a ton of new gestures, works very very well. I for the first time in my life feel that I did not need a mouse. Only issue I found with them is if you have the palm check thing on it messes up the scrolling in firefox. So I turn that off.
However! you can still have the disable touchpad while typing in effect with no ill effects using this great piece of software.
Touch Freeze - http://www.freewarefiles.com/TouchFreeze-V_program_24619.html
Will keep the touchpad from moving your cursor or making you type in a different place if you accidentally tap it while typing.
Newest Graphics Drivers - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...All&OSFullName=All Operating Systems&lang=eng
Adds glide3d or opengl support I think, but just may as well have the newest/best video drivers.
Everything else seems to be up to date on the drivers disk.
If you do not have the newest bios that is important too.
http://support.asus.com.tw/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us
I have 1005 they are the best I think - javascript:downloadfile(this,'Eee%20PC%201000H/XP','EeePC/EeePC1000H/1000H_ASUS_1005.zip','20','1','0','19','1000H_ASUS_1005.zip')
There is a newer 1103 but it says it only changed the board name in the bios lol.
Also for those interested I have made the way to "hack" Bluesoleil into working for the EEE 1000H it is 500x better than the stock software/drivers for the bluetooth.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=303559
And while I have not done it myself yet, somebody has sent me a PM that they got the toshiba bluetooth stacking working by doing the same kind of edit that I did for bluesoleil. Toshiba is also a very good bluetooth driver. -

Thank you everyone for your help.
Edit: Awesome news, just ordered another on the same deal. My mom said she wanted one, so my partition problems are over Now to go buy acronis. BTW, Zip Zoomfly has reactivated their deal for $30 off. I have been following it and it seems they get stock, drop the price, sellout, wait 12 or so hours and put it back at regular price with 99 cent rebate, wait 12-48 hours, and its back to $30 off. -
Bought it for $489 shipped. Getting 30% cash back through Microsoft Live Search. Not bad for $345!

I paid full price for both of mine , I did not know about the live cash back deal, and when I got them it was not 30% anyways.
Oh well they are worth what I paid. -

Somebody gave me a idea... EEE Box, a machine that I thought was totally useless... may have a use.
How about a HTPC??? My 1000H can handle 720p the EEE Box has wireless/os/ultra small size/power/heat all that covered.
Just $300 is too much I think, when its about $200 I think it could be a good entry level HTPC and may be better than a media extender which is what I am currently looking at. -
I bet it would definitely work. Even if it was overclocked and then extra cooling was added, it would act as an awesome little HTPC running the famous Linux Media distro (blanking on name). Newegg has it for $291...but then I would probably upgrade to a 500GB drive
Edit: It even has DVI built-in as well as an external wifi antenna -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Yeah the egg has the WD Blue for $150 the new 500gb drive, but I would be streaming most everything from my desktop over the network I think. They need to update the EEE Box, the 1000H has a 160gb HDD now because the 80gb was not big enough to be competitive and rumors say that it was only a 4200rpm drive and was a main cause in stuter when streaming video because the drive was not fast enough.
You can get the EEE Box for $200 on ebay with cash back only has DVI out with a VGA adapter. My main concern right now is I would have to convert that to RCA for my main living room tv as its older and has no dvi/vga/hdmi inputs. Over on EEE User forums somebody has had issues using a converter and he was told its because the EEE does not use a "real" video card it wont work with a converson and that your source needs a native vga source for it to work.
Not sure how true that is, but I can see how that would be. ATI/Nvidia cards have software that does a lot of things like resolution/scaling/overscan ect while the intel integrated pretty much does nothing and has no control panel outside of a few options. -
Would an external usb video card work in this situation?
-
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
Build your own atom computer, that mobo he linked has a pci-e slot so you could toss a cheap dedicated card in there if you had too.
I dont care for how big the case is though he recomended, and I would have to get a wireless card or adapter. But DIY is more of my style and will probably e cheaper so its a more valid option perhaps.
I think I will sit on it till dual core atom is out (should be very soon) I think the dual core version will pick up the slack of the single core and be able to run things like WMC, Vista, and 1080p video without problems, and if not I can use a dedicated card with hardware acceleration to fix it.
So Yeah I am leaning more at HTPC than extender now I guess, I just hate the idea of spending money on an extender to find it wont play half my video files due to there format. But love how streamline and fancy they are, and it gets it all done in one shot, wireless, remote, ect ect for $100... -
Does anyone have the 8GB 8.9" EEE :

How do you like it? -
Hi, I'm a new ASUS Eee PC 1000H owner, with a few questions about this netbook and laptops in general:
1) Are there any procedures I should take to increase the life of my battery? I've heard that I should maybe drain the battery initially or something, is this a myth? As well, I've heard not to leave the machine plugged in all the time - so is the idea to just unplug when it reaches 100%...then plug it back in at say 20-30%?
2) Just to be sure, all of these should come with LED backlit screens?
3) One of the first things I noticed is that it seems to be making a bit of noise right off the bat (the fan?)...is this normal?
4) Is there any configuration I should set up? So far I haven't done anything other than download Firefox and Adobe Flash. Are there anything I should enable/disable that may help with the noise/heat or anything?
5) I read about the autohotkey program that may let the up arrow function as the shift key. I downloaded this program, but I'm not quite sure what to do next. Can anyone give me a step-by-step instruction on how to enable this? As well, once I activate it, will the button still be able to act as an up arrow?
6) I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem, but I'm noticing that sometimes when I type, my letter appears twice. Is this a problem with the hardware/keyboard or is it something I can configure?
I think that's it for now - thanks in advance for any help. -
1) Correct
2)Correct
3)Yes, if it is bothering you, try tightening the hdd tray screws, there is more information at the eeeusers.com forums
4) Yes, there are many services, startup, etc. guides. Check out any standard Windows XP optimization tutorial.
5)eeeusers.com forums, not sure as I only use the left shift
6)Tweak your keyboard repeat options to a longer time
Viscious USMC has a great guide here within his review, there are also many other guides on the eeeuser.com forums. So far I have I have disabled the page file upgraded to 2GB of ram, updated my touchpad drivers and my bios, downgraded to stock video drivers due to a video out issue on the new drivers. Good luck. -
ViciousXUSMC Master Viking NBR Reviewer
I had a ton of guides to write still but they got put aside due to not being very much in demand.
So here is my answers in super short
1.) I never did anything just be sure to dim the screen down that helps a lot, if your not using the webcam, wireless, bluetooth turning those off helps too.
2.) Yes
3.) Mine is very quiet, I have heard some users say the fan just need a drop of oil and it was fixed. It could be that your running hotter too due to a bad mounting of a heatsink or something along those lines. Get your temps with a diagnostics program and we can go from there. I did a cooling mod on my EEE before I even booted it for the first time so mine runs VERY cool.
4.) There are a ton of things you can do. Since the resolution is so low I maximised my screen space. I took every single icon off my desktop (even the recycle bin) made the task bar auto hide, and then put what shortcuts I needed in a auto hide dock with rocket dock.
With Firefox I used a handfull of plugins, flash block, refresh/stop button, autohidestatusbar, and a few others.
5.) Its a program that uses script, I am not familar with it but somebody wrote me the script I use. I think I posted it somewhere if not you can find it on EEEuser for sure. I do not have my EEE right now tell you what it is.
6.) That is a known issue.. I did not have it happen to me. Do you have "bounce" to the keyboard? That can be the reason. One cure for that is double sided tape under the keyboard.
Im not sure if this is a physical issue like keyboard bounce or a software/driver issue. Not many people seem to have it so I think the first is more probable and why people with certain typing methods may suffer more from it. -
Thanks for the answers. This may sound stupid, but does anyone know how to adjust the brightness?
As well, I found on the eeeuser forums a link that has all these driver updates. Is it a good idea to just download all of them?
Another thing I noticed is that after installing the multi-touch driver update, the two finger scrolling seems to not work as well as before in the web browser. It was really smooth before, but now the scrolling is uneven and slow - is there any way to fix this? -
