I purchased the 8GB EEE PC 900 from Target...OS Windows Xp and it is incredibly SLOW. Should I return it? What should I replace it with?

Please define slow, it boots fast, but programs run slow. Does the CPU run at full 900Mhz? Is the main partition compressed? How much stuff do you have running on start up? All these things can be fixed by a clean install and some EeePc specific programs.
-
I only have AVG free and Spybot running at startup -
edit: I returned the Target EEE model and I'm planning on buying an EEE 9HA. How would I upgrade it to 2GB Ram? Where can I purchase 2gb? Thanks -

Getting 2gb of ram is easy online, newegg.com frys.com are the two main places I usually use. When its on sale you can get 2gb for as cheap as $7 and it can really make things more snappy. Especially in Vista. -
I was thinking of buying this 2gb of ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134549
Is it fairly simple to install? Sorry, for being an annoying n00b. I really appreciate all your help! -

Well if you find your able to type well on the 900's keyboards then the best one is the 900HA, you get the HDD so it will offer more storage space and faster speed than the SSD, and it has the Atom CPU.
I find personally I can not type well on anything smaller than the 10" 1000 series keyboards though.
For ram maybe look at one of these:

The first one is much cheaper but add shipping, the 2nd two are about the same price but w/ free ship. Trust me when getting stuff like this shipping is a big deal.
Doesn't hurt that the first one and third one are DDR2 800 aswell so you know they are test to run faster. I personally would get the 3rd one Geil is good ram, the other one looks like a new brand and says its from Crucial and they are a good brand. Really brand is not super imortant all the time as they just label & test the ram they are not the ones that actually make it.
If your a bargain hunter thogh we have a hot ram deals thread and I have seen 2gb sodimms posted time to time for like $7 in there.
Installing it is ultra easy on the 1000H, I assume its exactly the same for the 900's just a couple of screws and a friction lever is all you have to mess with. -
Just ordered a 1000ha after endless weeks of looking for the right notebook, and viewing the hp, lenovo, and asus in person, I hopefully made the correct choice!
Hopefully arrives Tuesday. Im just looking for xp tweaks, and everything I can remove to make it 'light', as well as getting my usb ready with programs like firefox, avg, winrar etc.. installs -
Sonic, congratulations. Head on over to the eeeusers.com forums for an extensive archive of tweaks. My first would be a 2GB ram upgrade and then disabling the pagefile Other than that, the limits are nearly endless. I hate to say, but my EEE runs smother than my G2S at times!
-
Im just searching for some sodimm on newegg, havent ordered yet. Seems like I can get some for roughly $17 shipped, so not bad.
Ill check out eeeuser for some tweaks. I bookmarked the driver updates vicous posted a few posts back as well. -

I have not changed anything on my EEE in a while I think my kit is complete.
Leather Case that everybody has seen in pictures I am sure.
Bag - Case Logic E-Sling Medium (for carrying just the unit & power brick)
Bag - Old Messenger Bag - (for carrying the whole kit)
USB GPS Unit - Navibe GM720
Mouse - Logitech Nano
External Speakers - Logitech V20
I never use the mouse, the touchpad is just too great on its own especially after the new drivers to add more gestures. I would love to try the 1002HA pad as its supposed to be bigger & better, but the drivers I have are not released for it so not sure if they work or not.
The speakers I already had, they come in handy for "DJing" with my EEE when I hang out. For being alone the 1000H speakers are really good and I dont mind them.
The leather case was great, keeps finger prints away, protects the EEE, and makes it look better. Also if you want ultra max mobility this is the best, just carry your EEE like a book and you dont need a bag.
The E-Sling is the best small bag I know of, has a sholder strap, good build quality & protection but is just big enough to comfortably fit the EEE & the power brick (or some other small accessories)
The GPS was a lot of fun, I have not used it in a while since I have not gone on a trip but sit the EEE next to you in the car (passenger seat) and use it as a GPS unit. I have 3 different programs on there. I like IGuidance the best, but Microsoft Streets & Trips 2009 is also great. I really do not care for Garmin Mobile PC too much, good around town functionality but I prefer how the other 2 programs map it out for you.
Its probably not safe to be eyeing down the screen all the time (but tempting especially the compass and speed gauge on S&T) so my best idea is to use a bluetooth headset and just listen to the directions. Works great. Alternatively something like one of those FM transmitters would work and you could just tune in the sound to your car radio (and the also play all your music you love off your EEE)
The only thing left on my "to get list" is a power inverter for the car so I can use unlimited amounts of power for anything in the car. So far the EEE has never run out of power since I get 5 hours on battery easy, but for a long trip using GPS or playing movies or something it would be nice to have. -
does anybody know what audio chipet the 900HA has? is it the realtek ALC260? im wondering because i need to use the mic and re-task it as a line-in source...can someone who has a 900HA check into this real quick for me by going into audio properties in control panel or use the realtek software that came with the 900HA if any? screenshots would be cool. i ordered a 900HA and I'm checking to see if i need to buy an extrernal sound card.

I just got my EEE 1000ha!!!
Looks awesome.
I was looking at people using nlite to reinstall xp and slim it down(would be nice).
They were talking of reloading xp and the key etc..do I need a copy of xp or can I get the key that is used on my eee already or what? -
I believe you will need an install disc, as the recovery dvd is an image, so my knowledge. Truthfully, I have not nlited my installation and see similar speeds and such. Even with all of my startup carp, it is quick.
-
Mines fully loaded and awesome! Got all the programs I need so far, so its pretty sweet! Im going to order 2gb of memory once newegg or amazon has a super deal like $10-$15 shipped. If not ill just order one in the next few days, they have some now for around $20 shipped.
This little guy is awesome! I got about 5 hours or more on the battery, I cant remember exactly.
I have 7zip, noteboo batteryinfo, touchfreeze, firefox, rocketdock, avg, vlc player, foobar 2000 for music. I think thats about it -
I also suggest dropbox, foxmark extension for ff, startup delayer, and rocket dock. It is great to hear your EEE is working great!
-
I have rocketdock, cant live without it! Foxmarks as well, should have mentioned it, I have a few addons for firefox!
I want to nlite it, but I dont have a xp key so maybe someday. -
Just got my 1002HA it is pretty sweet!

Anything I can remove?
I removed stuff from add remove programs, but is there a better way to remove junk I do not need?
Love this thing! -
Revo Uninstaller is very thorough in its uninstaller process, but can be too powerful for some users. Just be careful to read all the dialogs and such. I also suggest Startup Inspector to see what is suggested/needed/etc. and then make judgments as to what you need running. I am currently running at about 50 processes and am as happy as a clam. Everything I need is a shortcut away and it loads up (from power on w/auto password) in apx. 2 minutes +/-.

Well, I'm back in the Eee fold. My 900ha was delivered this afternoon.
I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, other than pulling it out of the box. Based solely on the look and feel of the machine, it's exactly what I wanted. It's small, almost like the 701, but has great specs.
I can't wait to dig into this thing. -
Anyone got any links to some good memory deals?
-
I just purchased a 900 HDB. I've been looking for some feedback and general information on the netbook and I seem to find some outdated information. A lot of the 900 HD information leads to erroneous hard drive size. The one I purchased yesterday possesses a 160GB drive as opposed to a 16GB drive.
Which series did I purchase and what is the general consensus on the machine. I am using it solely as a portable 2nd laptop. My primary laptop is a Macbook Pro. I plan on using the netbook to gain access to program that can only run on a windows based OS, such as blackberry desktop manager and sony ebook reader software.
Thanks! -
I'm not familiar with the 900HDB. I did, however, own the 900ha for a few months and enjoyed using it quite a bit.
If that machine is anything like the HA, which I assume it is, it will handle all of the things you're looking to throw at it without breaking a sweat. -

just picked up a 900a and added the super talent 16gb ssd...very pleased with it so far!

Hello all...sorry to revive an old thread but I am a soon to be owner of an EEE 1005 - royal blue. I was hoping Alienware was gonna reveal a AW-themed netbook.
But they did not, so I decided the Asus EEE 1005 had the best of all what I was looking for; size, style, and battery life. Plus, it seemed to get amazing reviews! -
Hey, does anyone have a copy of the EeePC wallpapers? I reformatted and lost them and I'd really like to get them again, thanks.
-
Is it worth getting a used Eee vs a new one?
I'm currently looking at a 1005, PC900 and PC701. The latter two have have SSD and all are priced ~$100.
The 1005 should be the newest/best one if my assumptions are correct.
I'm mainly just looking for one to surf the net at school and home but just don't want to make a bad purchase. -
yes.... get the 1008 or 1005 will do
-
By closing the lid, waiting, reopen, it starts to work.
