Does the Linux OS on the eee PC have the equivalent of XP's plug and play? I ask this because from time to time I would be looking to plug in a USB azerty (french) keyboard.
Would the eee PC support this?
Other related question - I am thinking of going for the 4gb instead of the 2gb, as I feel the 2gb is by no means enough storage space for e.g. an additional OS, stripped-down Office etc. Is the 4gb going to be adequate? My home network has a 500gb Freecom HD linked in.
Thanks

To current owners:
Just curious if any of you purchased the 2gb surf eee. From my understanding the ram is not upgradeable for this model. How would you compare the speed, say compared to Nokia's n800 tablet?
Also, I was wondering whether 4gb surf and 4gb both had socketed ram slots? And what model of ram? Some say 4gb surf is soldered, some say it's not. Just need to verify. Would this ram work? http://www.buy.com/prod/kingston-2g...hz-ddr2-667-pc2-5300/q/loc/101/202465939.html
Lastly, did any of you install Kubuntu? Did you get the flash player to work?
Thanks -
Yes. The RAM you linked to will work.
Here's the deal with the upgradeable RAM. Any 4G, regular or Surf, has upgradeable RAM. It just depends on how far you're willing to go to do the upgrade.
Black 4G Surfs are easily upgradeable. They have a RAM door on the bottom of the machine.
White 4G Surfs are a different story. Some have the RAM door. Some don't, and there's really no way of knowing whether the one you buy will have the door or not. But, if you're willing to completely dismantle the machine, you can upgrade the RAM. The socket is there. They just make it hard to get to it, and you will be voiding the warranty if you dismantle the machine.
To be safe, I'd just go with a Black one. -
Thanks mick4394!
I was considering the black 4g surf. Are you using XP on yours? How easy is it to restore to the original software, if I end up not liking Kubuntu or whatever other OS I install? Does the eee come with an restore cd?
How do you like the screen? How's the clarity? -
-
Yes, it does come with a restore CD. I can't comment on how easy it is to restore because I've never had to do it. Though, I've heard the restore process is very simple.
I don't have a problem with the screen. Sure, I'd prefer a larger one, or one with higher resolution, but it gets the job done. It's hard to complain when it only cost 350 bones. -
is the SSD upgradeable in the 4G version?
-
Sometimes yes. Sometimes no.
The deal is, some Eee PCs have a PCIe port, that can be used for expansion. Some don't.
Early Surfs had the port, now they don't. At this point, non-Surfs do have the port. 8Gs do as well, but on the 8Gs the port is actually used to hold the 8GB SSD.
Make sense?
There are also hacks that users have done, who don't have the port, to add internal storage. But, you'll have to be proficient with a soldering iron, and be willing to break your warranty.
Really, with all the questions you have, you should check out the eeeuser.com forums. It's a large community of Eee user's. That's where all the action is. -

I ended up biting the bullet and buying a 4G. I hope the 6 cell comes out soon or at least before the fall when I'll be taking a trip.
Any suggestions on a small mouse? Apparently Asus hasn't released the mouse yet either. -
Seems quite small -
I ended up with a Logitech V150
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-V150...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1202738606&sr=1-1
I wanted something that was wired so I wouldn't have to mess with batteries for the mouse. -
Do you guys think this is a good price for a used black 4g surf (NO WEBCAM)?
$260, supposedly in perfect condition on Craigslist. -
That is an excellent price.
-
Just curious if anyone dual booted using wubi 7.04...
-
is a better option (cordless).. works like a charm on the EEE. But you do run into the battery issues once in 6 months or so,... -
FYI... the surf models don't come with a case.
I wasn't aware of that... so I called ASUS and explained that buy.com told me to contact them directly, and the guy said "buy.com is really bad, worst than ebay"... I had a good laugh. But he wasn't aware of the surfs having no case. So I was transferred to 3 other ppl until the last person updated me with the info. Interesting customer service.... -
Tks -

The logitech is pretty good. -
I remember how disappointed I was that the HP Jornada and NEC Mobilepro form factors were discontinued. They were perfect for me (I'm a budget backpack-traveler), but this seems even better because I can have FrontPage and CorelDraw with me too.
Anyway, I just returned my XPS M1330 within the 21 day full-refund period. It was just too extravagant (along with the other known issues).
I'll probably get a 4G w/camera off eBay and resell it there when the new ones come out (provided that I think that the new one has justifiable purchase features).
Any bets on when the next-gen Eee will hit? -
I would be interested to know that myself, and also whether it will involve that new silverthorne processor. -
Just picked up an Asus eee 4G w/webcam. Got 2gb ram and windows xp installed. I am impressed with it. Feels a like a little cheap toy, but its well worth the price.
-
A little cheap toy well worth the price...now if that doesn't sound wrong It feels a heck of alot more like a notebook then my HP Pavilion dv1049cl
-
It seems that with SSDs coming along, and Asus's recent experience in this niche, every company is rushing in. If you have not already done so, search the HP 2133 (sorry if this is already mentioned in this thread).
-
Had the eee for about 9 days, and noticed that my space bar is uneven, one side sticks up slightly... anyone experiencing this?
Is it worth a RMA? -

You could RMA it if it really bothers you. I know the 'sparkly' image that the X1600 had a problem with on my laptop... before they came out with a bios fix, drove me _nuts_ though some people didn't even notice it.
If it irritates you because your new laptop should be just right... then tell them that it's a flaw that's causing problems with typing because your finger catches on it when you try to slide down to it or something.

9 inch EEE shown at Cebit...
For those consdering a 2nd eee, maybe you should hold off for now http://gizmodo.com/363243/asus-89+inch-eee-pc-900-confirmed

Hi, I'm strongly considering the new 2nd gen EEE. I read that they were planning to put a LV/ULV Core Duo in it but other places say that they'll stick with the 900Mhz Celeron. Is there strong evidence for the Core Duo claim or does Digitimes just have foolish informants?
If it does go dual, do you guys think it will be able to handle the extra heat and battery drain, or is the difference not that great?
Thanks in advance. -
A question to EEE owners:
How is the 'ease of use' on these machines? I am looking at purchasing one for someone who is -very- computer illiterate, emphasis on -very-. Will it be easy to click and play?
Further - is the linux OS simple? Would installing XP be easier for them to pickup and learn? -
FWIW, I'd say the way the EEE is setup, it's 'no-brainer simple'.....
-
Point taken.. what about operating system wise?
And what about once they start filling it with "custom" stuff, like instant messengers, music and pictures as I'm sure it will be? Aside from limited storage is finding files and maintaining the EEE easy for an (extreme) novice? -

SOLD!

I will be the proud owner of a 9", when that comes in.
-
-nod, I won't buy until the 9" are on the market but that's soon enough. Not sure which way I'll go though, as I wonder if the 1st gen will become cheaper, or if 2nd gen will just be more expensive.

May 12th = EEE 900 for sale in the US

Too Bad the C Drive is still 4GB.... LOL...

About two weeks ago my Eee PC 701 ate my SDHC card
This wasn't a removed-while-writing corrupt or anything(so it isn't possible to reformat the card, to try to recover stuff)... The card was inside the Eee the entire time.. then the Eee would not boot(it fails if it cannot read the SDHC card) until I pulled out the SDHC.
A few others have reported the same problem on eeeuser.com, and one person was able to get their Eee replaced under the warranty claim... But I'll still be out an $70 SDHC card, and I'm not about to continue using SDHC cards in it to have them trashed by the Eee's appetite.
The Eee is a great little machine, minus my issue with the SDHC that may just be a defect. It served me well, but I will be pursuing a warranty claim when I have time next week--and hopefully it works out... I'd like to replace with a larger 12"-13" with 1280x800. -
Does anybody that has tiny XP had installed SP3?
Does it take too much space?
Thanks, -
Hey Eee users!
My little brother is considering picking up an Eee, and I've been looking at, on his behalf, the 900 series offered on PortableOne right now:
http://laptopsinc.com/Merchant2/mer...&Product_Code=EEEPC900-W047&Category_Code=EEE
Looks nice!
Quick question for current owners: has anyone tried and/or had issues with trying to use an external HDD or CD/DVD Drive?
THANKS! -

Back to the top Asus EEE 1000H for sale $450 now (with 6 cell battery), so I am probably going to buy 2 of them!
I want a black one for my wife, and a white one for me.
Look forward to some cleaver use of this cool machine once I get mine
I guess MSI almost made it I was soo close to buying one and bam! Asus came thru at the last minute with the $100 price cut and bigger battery.
Acer Aspire One was a honorable mention, great all around for $399 but lacking bluetooth and overall not as nice. I would have got it for my wife but not for me.
Infact Here is the link: http://www.amazon.com/Acer-8-9-inch...3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1221117458&sr=8-3
If your ok with blue and a slightly smaller screen I think this is a great machine, as a bonus it has a 160gb HDD vs the 80gb of the 1000H (but I am most probably going to toss a 320gb WD drive in mine at a future date) -
:::
I can stand for, compare with MSI Wind, Lenovo S10 all are 10" screen,
why EEE 1000H is so thick & heavy as a so called Netbook.
So I vote for Acer Apsire One 160G HDD XP 6 Cell. I have
around 7hrs + Batt life at 2.4lbs....

I have seen a number of comparison videos and the 1000H is only ever so slightly bigger than the others. I think its worth it for the bigger screen to make it easier on the eyes, and also the one thing the Aspire lacks is bluetooth and I NEED bluetooth.
Also like with my G50V and C90S I can not use them without my cooling pad to tilt the notebook up, I saw the side shots and the 1000H has more slant than the others, the aspire almost looks flat, thats kind of what adds to its vertical profile but its a good thing to make it more comfortable to type on.
Come soon there will be an update to the 1000H with a 160gb HDD rather than the 80gb. I guess some places are already taking pre-orders.
Overseas the 160gb went down to the price of the 80gb and the 80g went down 30$ lower. So that could mean 80gb 1000H for $420?? -
Still waiting for 'unpartitioned' SSD at 16GB or better with XP, 1.6 Atom, Blue Tooth, 6 cell battery, and Wireless-n.
I have until November so I'm sure that one will be out by then, but if not, has anybody bought an Asus 901 20GB SSD (Linux) and installed XP? -
