I'm an Asus man now. First the G2S-A1, and now I'm so impressed by Asus the Eee is on its way.

I wouldn't mind paying a little more for those kinds of upgrades. Would they have to keep the same pixel density, or could they make them more dense? I've heard of some tiny 800x600 screens on mobiles?

You can already get EEE skins online through Asian dealers, had a link for one but can't find it now. I personally will wait for Galaxy Black.

Do you mean XP with nlite? If so, then read all the threads about it on the eeeuser forum (in the XP section).

    nlite can be found here:

Does anyone have any links for EEE skins? I googled it but nothing really came up. And what do you guys think about swapping about the webcam on the EEE? I just think .3 MP isn't enough. I have been perusing eeeuser.coms forums, but there doesn't seem to be too much conversation about such a hardware swap.

    Damn sweet man!

Now that I heard the 8GB use a mini PCIe SSD card I'm thinking of picking a 4GB (with the extra min PCIe slot). The EEE is suppose to be able to recognize up to 32GB SSD add in cards and you can configure them in your BIOS. Save $100 bucks now and get a cheap dimm and then get the add in cards once they start popping up online.

I picked up the 8G on Newegg it got delivered thursday, played with it as it came for a day. then put nlited xp pro on it. Works perfect boots to the desktop from a cold start in 26 seconds. I also put portable apps on an sdhc card and this little unit will do most things I want to do when traveling around daily.
Over 3hrs battery life. All I can say is AWESOME.

And it's gone :) Not because I didn't like it, I just got a great deal. A friend of mine paid me 600$ for the Black Eee with 2GB ram and original XP Pro that I no longer need. I'll wait a while and get the 8GB model and this time stick with linux ;)

The 8g comes with 1gig ram they will recognise 2 gig in XP the 4g can do the same, as far as 80 gig "memory"?? I will asume you mean external hard drive .
Yes I have a 120 gig in a slim case and it sees it just fine. If you plan to stay with Xandros it can only see 1 gig due to kernel issues, that may get resolved in future versions of the machine and OS

I just got the Zeroshock III case for my Eee and I'm quite happy with it. It is very compact and has much more protection than a typical sleeve (it is intended to go in another bag like a sleeve). I got the 10.4 inch model and the Eee fits very nice and snug in it (Interior dimensions are (W x D x H): 9.0 x 1.6 x 7.2 inches (230 x 40 x 185 mm)). It is made from high-resistance polyurethane which makes it harder but it still soft. It is obviously bigger than the included neoprene sleeve but it offers a lot more protection. I'm no longer worried about carrying in my fanny pack.

I also bought a 15.5" one for my S96j and it also fits very nicely in it.

I'm really debating getting one of these to take notes at school with. It seems like a very clean and fast way to take notes. I can type a hell of alot faster than I can write and this would allow me to listen alot more than to constantly rush to get all the notes down.

I think I'll get the 4G model and then grab an 8GB SDHC card. I'm going to work on a super streamlined XP. Right now I have a benchmarking one for one of my computers and the full xp folder (sp2 and been used for a good year) is 1.21GB. I am pretty sure with some tweaking I can get that down to 800MB or so.

Imported my Galaxy Black 8G from Taiwan into Saudi Arabia. Put a 2GB Corsair DIMM in it immediately. Wow, what a lovely little machine! I tried nlite but it wasn't working for me so I went with a maxed-out XP Pro SP3 install with Office 2007 SP1 and all my apps. At the moment it is a full blown computer, even if it is taking up 5GB of space. It can do EVERYTHING I need. Unbelievable. The webcam isn't bad either. My XP folder is about 3GB but that includes 600MB of SP files. There were only four updates on WU after I logged on to check. I knew I should have slipstreamed SP3. XP boots in 40 seconds to the desktop. Anyone know what folders are safe to delete under C:\Windows?

The plastic feels slightly cheesy and cheap (to my finely attuned for Latitudes and ThinkPads eyes) but it isn't bad at all at this price point. And it does feel very well built. The Keyboard looks funny with the Chinese characters though (along with English). It's a bit crowded but you get used to it after a while. I hear the 8G units are going for about $430 or so in Taiwan but my importer charged me the standard $499 plus $36 for EMS shipping. I still think I got a good deal.

oh thank you :) for all the eee pc owners out there, has the battery problem been a real headache when using the laptop at university or the library?

on eeeuser one of the solution i found was to unplug the adapter, reboot, press f2 for bios and save without doing anything, then it will be temporarily fixed until you plug the adapter back in. Would doing this temporarily make the battery meter correct? I guess that's all I need until a fix comes out.

-what are the chances you think asus will release a patch for this.

    sorry for the n00b attack.

Keep in mind that the keyboard is cramped, and multiple users have noted that touch typing on the Eee is quite difficult since the keys are substandard size and cramped together. This model at 7" really isn't meant to be an ultraportable replacement - it's a productivity tool/toy. I would highly suggest you consider the above or actually *try* one to see whether your hands can replicate your typing speed; many (including the NBR admin staff review of the Eee) state that typing errors are rampant due to the keyboard size issue, and trying to take speed notes in a class on this model may not be productive for you.

You may be right and my personal experience reflects your points above but there are plenty of people over at eeeuser.ccom forums who are reporting speeds upwards of 75wpm. I think with a bit of practice you can certainly get used to the keyboard. Admittedly the freaky upward arrow between the Shift and / or ? key still messes me up.

The dark is where I have a real problem. I can type in the dark on a normal keyboard in bed but on this keyboard it is practicaly impossible. Would have been nice to have a single LED in the same area where the power button is (except near dead-center) that could be turned on via a combination using the FN key (ala ThinkLight). Obviously it is too much to expect in a machine this size at the sub-$500 price point.

Hi there, might be interested in one of these. Haven't been able to find out if it will run something that will allow access to Live Messenger/Instant Messenger. Strikes me this gadget might be quite suited for the kids to do all that tedious stuff on an Eee and leave the proper PC to me.... Any ideas?

You can follow the instructions in the eeeuser wiki to change the default OS language to English, this is what I did and it takes less than a minute:

    http://wiki.eeeuser.com/howto:changelanguage

Dude, I have been using laptops for more than a decade and I am using the eee (currently) as my primary laptop. It is running XP SP3, Office 2007 Pro, AND Adobe Acrobat 8.1 Pro. Plus it is running all my little apps like WinRAR and FLVDownloader etc. And yes, I use the MSN Messneger with webcam; it works superbly.

I am lined up to buy a Black 8GB model from a guy on craigslist here in a couple hours for $375. I am a college student and would primarily like something to take notes and surf the internet with. Do you think the EEE is worth it? I would like to put XP on it and office ultimate 2007. I'm just not sure how much the eee is worth to me... what do you guys think?

^it was so easy. follow the guide to make your xp installation smaller, and you basically have windows on the EEE. the driver cd it comes with installs everything in windows by itself.

Yes, you should be able to - the Eee is just a smaller ultra-portable, after all.

Using something that small, while tethered to a wall outlet rather defeats the purpose of its design, however :).
