That Kingston ValueRam was probably the cheaper solution and that's why everyone got it. It's not much of a plus.

Well maybe I will upgrade the RAM too, but Blu-ray comes first.

I just wish the video card has slightly more oomph. It devours many games like WoW or Unreal 3 or Aion Tower of Eternity etc.

It just won't quite give me the shinyness I want in Age of Conan or Everquest 2 or Crysis.

Don't get me wrong I can play these games in 1920x1080 with 70FPS it is just that I have to turn the settings off max. The first games I listed can be run at MAXIMUM EVERYTHING. :D

For some reason I am really nervous about the Blu-ray bezel install - I have heard those diodes are extremely fragile.

Also will RAM make that much of a difference? Would I do better to upgrade the processor?

I have heard the mobile 5870 is a overclocked desktop 5770 with GDDR5 but I wish they had given it a little more power. There is nothing to upgrade too though which is so ironic - the 5870 mobile is the fastest single GPU available for mobile.

I guess you would have to go crossfire which I don't think we can do, with this laptop, ever. It is interesting that mobile gaming is still SO FAR BEHIND even with the best GPU and quad core.

Interestingly the games that I can max the best are really good at multicore support - WoW, Aion have both been heavily optimized for multicore now - whereas EQ2 is single core - single code stream for the most part.

Just wish I could get a little more out of this.

    My desktop is:

    QX9770 @ 3.66Ghz
    Dual GTX280 @ 650Mhz each SLI
    Striker 2 Extreme MB @ 1600Mhz FSB
    8GB DDR3 1N 1333Mhz

and it just destroys this laptop in performance - and I mean DESTROYS.

They did a processor comparison of like 200 CPUs and fascinatingly the QX9770 with 1600Mhz FSB is still faster than any AMD CPU made today even though I got it 18 months ago~

Here is the link to a VERY interesting article: http://www.behardware.com/articles/778-1/giant-roundup-131-intel-and-amd-processors.html

You'll love that article if you are the enthusiast I am.

My QX9770 has really lasted me well. Especially overclocked - I won't need to upgrade for another 6-12 months and I am still on the very high end. I can push it to 4.0Ghz too - just don't like to wear it out.

Just got my X1 and newegg sents the packages itself, no boxing. It seems my laptop is reading 4G as well. I took 2 of the rams out and it's still reading 4G. I took all 3 rams out, system refuses to boot up.

Something is very odd with the X1, I put 2 of the rams in, it reads 6G and only 3.93G is usuable. Yes the OS is Windows 7 64. Anytime all 3 are in it only reads 4G. I also bought a 2nd HD, Seagate 500G 7200rpm and just put it ni without the cage. I'm not moving the laptop so I'm not concern about the HD moving around.

@werry333: You 'll see better performance out of an upgraded processor than the memory.

The Blue-Ray bezel should be just a couple screws holding it on. Nothing really to screw up.

@daddyd302: Can you make the pic bigger and closer? I can't see it. ;)

Under accessories for Windows 7 and Vista there is a program called snip-it. It's easier to use for screen shots.

Out of curiosity, if they expect the price to go down soon, why did you order it now? Will they price match themselves if it goes down, or you just didn't want to wait?

    WARNING WARNING WARNING

    NewEgg WILL NOT PRICE MATCH.

I got them to price match ONCE and it is just because I am HUGE annual customer and spent two days arguing with a manager.

Do NOT BUY from them and think you will get a price match - you will NOT.

You cannot really blame them it is the nature of computer parts and how fast they depreciate.

If they price matched it could be EASILY abused by people who buy a GPU then call back every month when the manufacturer lowers the price $50.

Actually the manager told me they used to price match but it was because of abuse and all the money they were losing that they now enforce a strict no price match policy.

Usually retailers will only price match within 30 days.

The bezel is held on by 3 universal plastic clips. Just be careful and it pops off.

Check your temps when performance start going down. Also use GPUZ to make sure your clocks are going into 3D frequencies.

I've got a little question. I want to start clean with this machine booting from my ssd and just keep the 500gb drive for storage. I booted up the preinstalled OS and found there to be a sheet load of bloatware. My initial inclination is just to install windows 7 fresh from the dvd onto the ssd and then add the necessary drivers and such. Then, clear out anything left on the 500gb drive. However, I just wanted to ask if anyone had any issues doing this. Did all the drivers install fine with a fresh copy of windows. Are there any valuable/necessary programs that I'd be losing in the process? If so, should I manually clear the unnecessary preinstalled bloatware off the 500gb drive and then ghost it over to the ssd? Any help would be appreciated.

I don't understand why some laptops came with 1333Mhz RAM and others 1066. I mean isn't that somewhat misleading? Now I know it doesn't say specifically what kind of RAM is offered from newegg but I still think that it's a bit shaddy to not inform your customer of all details.

The advertised speed for this notebook is 1066, so I don't see how it's shady if they've been putting in faster RAM.

I think actually hardware acceleration is automatically handled in Win7 and you can't adjust it.

Do a google search "cracking in speakers windows 7". Man there's a ton of stuff so you are not alone. Maybe this is a driver/Win7 problem? Keep us up to date and I'll post if I have the same problem when I get mine. Sorry can't help.

I went for the ocz agility 60gb on sale at newegg for $129 AR. frehs install is better for partition alignment, then just deactivate windows search, and indexing on your system drive, oh and superfetch and you are good to go.

my WEI for this drive is 7.3

Just got my A-2. First thing I noticed is that the wireless adapter does not pick up my wireless N network. I have a dual band router. The laptop picks up my G network but not N. What's up with that?

Also, just typing this, the spacebar is having a difficult time registering the key press.

The Intel/Atheros cards installed on the G73JH's only support 2.4Ghz signals. So if you have your dual band router only sending N signals via 5.0Ghz bands, you'll need to change it.

I and many others in the other threads have confirmed that the Intel 5100/6200 series wifi cards work well with the laptop. I installed the Intel 6200 Wifi card and can use 5.0Ghz N signals @ 300Mbps.

if nothing fixes this...you may need to take out the cpu and put it back. this seems to happen with i7's and triple channel memory...something to do with how the cpu was placed in...wired business to say the least....

Test for DPC latency while your at it. Some claim that can be a cause for crackles. Also I assume these are your system speakers and not external ones.

ive read somewhere creative drivers tend to produce crakling sound when more than 2 gigs of ram is installed on the system, creative never released a fix for the problem but there is a modded driver somewhere i cant remember where that link is

i am not sure if that driver is compatible with this laptop

edit: the name of the modder is Daniel K but i cant find the links

i believe it is a driver problem because the audigy, x-fi series(desktop audio card) suffers from crackling sound
on the desktop there were numerous fix available, i believe you should look for Daniel K(creative forum member) modded driver to see if it will work for you

The audio chip in the G73 isn't made by creative.

It just has the Audigy software, so not sure where you're going with the Creative driver issue.

It would narrow it down, no? Would you rather listen to crackles and play with your little fake surround sound, or have clear audio?

Besides, the creative software is bloated crap anyway. To each his own...

    Troll?

I am just stating my opinion. Maybe other members here don't realize that the audio isn't made by creative, and if they could uninstall software that isn't necessary to running the machine then they would.

Basic computer troubleshooting. Maybe you should go take an A+ class.

Now go listen to your crackles...

i suggest you uninstall your creative software and ati driver
then reboot go to safemode run driver sweeper select ati and creative
    analyze then clean
    [IMG]
then install your ati driver http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?model=G73JH&os=29&SLanguage=en-us
    link for driver sweeper http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

optional: you may want to scan and repair your registry using ccleaner
