Alrighty!! Let me know how it goes. I'll order it if it works out fine for you. I just found this on the net, if anyone wants a cheap bluray player they got it for $69.

Yeah where did you order it from?

I ordered from the asus estore last week and I just got it. It does not fit correctly. Holes don't line up. I'm still going to use it with some electrical tape (yes I know a bit ghetto) until someone finds something better or they finally release the right one for the G73.

Has anyone tried called Asus and asking them for it?

This would be what to do. Call ASUS and say that you dropped yours and the hard drive caddy broke.

Tell them everything works fine but you need to buy or have a new one sent under warranty.

It would be worth a try. Please let us know if you call and this works.

My blu-ray delivery has been delayed due to holiday it will not be here until wednesday. :(

Also I have not kept up with other threads - has anyone NOT gotten 1333Mhz RAM? Or is it established that they all have 1333Mhz?

If not I feel really lucky to have gotten the $1400 price and 1333Mhz RAM.

They should make them all that way - sucks if it is going to be luck of the draw on RAM speed.

Everyone has gotten the 1333 memory but it's the cheapest of the Kingston line. I've already replaced mine.

Someone can even argue the memory is slower because the latency is higher.

Mandrake - which machine do you like better out of the 2 in your sig?

I would love to hear an in-depth comparison!

    Thanks!

My M17xR2 is having power issues and I'm waiting for a replacement with a new bios to fix it. Assuming that issue is resolved I like the M17xR2 better. The G73 is quieter and lighter. Two big pluses for a notebook but not enough to overcome RGBLED and Crossfire and overall built quality.

I talked to Asus/estore about it yesterday and they said they don't have it in the catalog yet but they think they will soon. I was not able to special order it.

Does the X1 come with a recovery CD or a lame recovery partition and do they partition the 500GB into 1 or 2 partitions?

Yeah, if money is no object then the R2 for sure.

    I don't disagree :D

However, the G73 does everything I need very well. Benchmark numbers are fun, but I actually, ya know, use my system to play some fun games on ;)

Comes with recovery CD and a recovery partition. It's also partitioned into an OS and Storage partition (so 3 total). I didn't like that so I removed that partition, especially since I plan on adding another drive in the future.

Hey guys, I finally got my X1 today and hmm there r 2 problems for me, 1 is when i play NFS shift it kinda lags a lil bit (my M15x doesn't lag at all with same settings :S) and the 2nd issue is, i hear randomly crackling noises from the built in speakers when i open a program, click or anything..weird n kinda scary lol..Well other than that the system looks great and also i got 1333Mhz ram..so woot for that :D

Only thing that comes to mind is make sure your power setting is Entertainment or High Performance.

I had it on Quiet office somehow and everything was slow and choppy as it locks the CPU down to 9x.

check to be sure your performance isn't set for "balanced". Right click on the battery, and select power options. Set for performance

Edit: Missed it by THAT much!

Balanced should be ok, as it will go full tilt if needed (that's what I always leave my system at).

Just the battery saver stuff you need to be aware of.

Yeah I alrdy checked that, my power option is at "Power4Gear High Perfomance" and also "Twin Turbo mode is enabled". I really don't care the about the lil lags in NFS Shift, but when I hear system sounds, theres a crackling noise in them. Thats the only thing that I wanna get rid of. I'm gonna try reinstalling sound drivers now. Wish it fix the problem.

Well, could be drivers could be the actual speakers.

I would reformat and see if it helps (after trying the re-installation of audio drivers).

Sleep? Brand new G73 with an audio bug, and you are hitting the rack at 9:30? I admire your lack of enthusiasm for your new lappy. Me? I wouldn't be able to sleep until I know the root cause. It is highly unlikely that both speakers are damaged. Therefore, I also believe there is a driver issue. Did you download the extra CCC stuff from the driver disc?

This is so disheartening to read. The number of problems considering how few confirmed G73 owners on this forum alone is ridiculous. Especially since I have had a wonderful experience with mine with stability, quality and performance. My experience has been stellar with Asus from their laptops, to their customer service.

I hope this is simple driver issue and not hardware.

Thanks for the answer. Don't mind the dual partitions but I hate those recovery partitons. Waste o space. Everything should be put on a DVD-DL or better yet it should be a clean install of the OS wit the OS disc. Hadn't been that way for a long time though and that's another thread for another time.

Did anyone every find another workable hard drive chassis? I'll have to check with a local shop that does work on lappies. I'm sure they have em if their willing to part with one?

I've read through this thread and some others but man there's a ton of reading. What SolidStateDiscs work well with the X1 or maybe easier are there any that this bios doesn't support?

So far no one's found a workaround but the OP of this thread, but I'm not sure what he used as some others tried an ASUS caddy and it didn't fit. I talked to ASUS and they may have it later on but nothing yet. I will wait for some more info or them to make the caddy available.

Lol your right man, I couldn't go to sleep, well I tried everything except formating (too scared coz its too new :p), but the problem still exists. I know the speakers aren't broken because the crackling noise occurs randomly, not all the time. Just gonna call Asus tomorrow, they might help me through the phone. Well I'm gonna goto sleep now! lol..had fun with this beast for 9 hours straight :D

    Things to try:

    - Check and see if the sound card's "hardware acceleration" is on. Try it "off". This will cause some speakers to crack.

    - Did you try a headset? If that doesn't crackle then it's not the drivers.

    - Could be loose wire on the speakers

    - Speakers could be blown especially if they were in a cold FedEx truck for a long time and really dried out and then you cranked them up cold. Not probable but possible.

If that's not it then like you said you can go the route of uninstalling and reinstalling drivers. Ugh. :(

Oh and may sound stupid but are you sure it's not interference from a cell phone or the like? I know GSM (i think it is) will crackle speakers even several feet away. Might just be doing that sitting on your hip or in your pocket. Hey don't mean to insult your intelligence if you've thought of this, but I try the simple stuff first.

How do I tell is the RAM I got is 1333 or not? Will CPU-z show me that? Also can you adjust any kind of settings in bios like timings?

Pull one of the Ram cards and look on the other side. It will say 1333 or 1066. As for timing setting in Bios.....Not for the 720. We are locked out of that.

One other thing, is there a way to make a custom display profile for Splendid Utility? Or at least a way to adjust saturation?

You know we can buy a cheaper version of the R2 with RGBLED and 4870XF and still get it under $2k through EPP.

And how are you going to get it under $2k?

The 21% is dead, bro (yep, Dell killed it and I'm  ). After taxes and shipping, there is no way to get RGBLED and CF for under $2k shipped.

You are a special case, if your systems cost the same. I would now need to spend about $600 more for the base RGBLED and CF (and this comes with an i5-520, 4GB, 25GB HDD).

Just ordered the X1 from Newegg. They have a bunch and the rep said they should go on sale soon. Thank goodness. $1599 is way too steep considering it was $1400 or so a few days ago.

Can't wait to get it and do a fresh install. Someone here was talking about putting up a complete driver list/download? If you need help with this lemme know.

Received the buy.com $30 bag today that i have proposed a few posts ago , and I can now tell that this is an exceptional value for the price. it beats hands down all the 17" bag i have seen at best buy that cost way more than $30. I dont know if it is better than the one provided with the a2 or a1 but it fits the bill for me. definitely a good deal if you need to carry this baby for cheap,

    Pros:
    - sturdy materials
    - laptops fits securely
    - lots of pockets and the accessories pouch is great
    - very roomy, you could serioulsy store ipods, camera gear and laptop in it
    - very comfy to wear
    - bags stay right when on the floor

    Cons:
    - not for small guys/girls
    - keyboard section seems useless to me
    - dont know if it is weather protected, no included weather protection like on the lowepro

    Others:
    - xps sign is you don't like to show off. not a problem for me.

That crackling problem sounds like the problem Audigy cards were having. Creative claimed the problem was with how Windows handled something in the system that would cause it. I think there was a fix eventually in the form of an updated driver. Since I'm sure it is using the latest drivers you could try and just reinstall the drivers.

Though I'm not having that problem so it could be the speakers themselves. You might have to RMA it.

My laptop has been perfect including leaving it on accidentally for 24 hours hooked up to a HDTV playing a Stargate Atlantis episode in HDTV in repeat mode.

In other words it had to decompress and play the video over and over for 24 hours and when I noticed that I had left it playing the next day after work it was not even hot!

This laptop is remarkably rugged and problem free - even after adding a SSD.

I am still crossing my fingers for the Blu-ray though it has not arrived yet.

However I got one of the first ones for $1400 with 1333Mhz RAM and it has worked in a flawless, quiet and very low heat manner.

Quietest gaming laptop ever - eats WoW for lunch in ULTRA settings at 1920x1080.

I guess I got lucky to get one of the good ones. So far the laptop could not be more perfect. *crosses fingers*
