Why does it need to die? This thread has a separate purpose than the other threads and serves to reduce all the junk.
If you want to read countless pages of "OMG mine didn't ship yet" or "snow sucks" or "I love resellers" or "resellers suck" go to the other thread.
I know I don't want to wade through that to find technical info on upgrading my X-1.
This thread is for SERIOUS discussion by X-1 OWNERS who have their product in hand and are upgrading/overclocking/modding.
PLEASE DO NOT MERGE US INTO ALL THE SPAM IN THE OTHER THREAD.
I want one place to go for serious discussion on technical/upgrade/modding/benching discussions and help.
Your post is exactly the kind of spam that does not contribute to the community.

Which model Asus did the caddy come from?
This is the one I'm using: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002XZM1L6/ref=oss_product but honestly any of them will work. There's a good thread in here about replacing the drive with a blu-ray in the Asus section, and it has a nice youtube video link showing bezel removal- http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=435910 -
-
-
I agree with werry333, dont merge! That other thread has way to much 'junk' stuff in it.
werry333, please post any details when you did the SSD drive and reloaded Windows 7 and details on the drivers you used and if any other changes you made. -

Well, almost 99% of the things discussed in this thread have been talked about and answered in the owner's lounge thread. There's already quite a bit of work that has been done on installing SSD's and overclocking.
If you think this thread is going to be any more productive than the one in there you are sorely mistaken. -
The caddy was metal and looked like this.
I am still unsure of the model - it was bought by my company for a presentation last year. Rest assured any standard ASUS 2.5" caddy will work. It is not a unique part.
Out of curiousity I opened my Gateway FX gaming laptop computer and the 2.5" caddy looks identical. I think it is a standard part widely in use. The one in the gateway was more like a plastic but dimensionally it was identical in every way.
It has a core 2 duro at 1.86Ghz, it does not have a model number on it, would it help if I give the serial number??
The caddy looked like the one above, 2.5" with 4 protrusions on it. -
The caddies in Gateway FX's were metal. I have some lying around somewhere.
-
-
as to the person askin the caddy fit perfectly into the laptop. the only thing that required minor cusomization was to get the SSD stable in the caddy.
make sense? -
For those with the factory OS installed or those that have upgraded, can you tell me these two things:
1.) What is the device name for the built-in camera and what driver is it using
2.) Do you have an SRS sound control panel? I only have RealTek's and there is no options at all for the built-in subwoofe.
I did a complete re-install and these are the last 2 things I need to get working. SRS comes up with an error on boot that there are no srs devices found.
I will be putting together a complete package of drivers for those that device to upgrade fresh. The stuff listed on Asus's website is not complete. -
rancid,
On the built in web-cam, try Sonix (USB 2.0 2.0M UVC WebCam)
On the sound, maybe try searching Realtek ATI HDMI Audio...
Sounds like a good game plan on putting the complete package of drivers together! -
-
rancid, this driver from Asus didnt work for the camera?
Chicony_CNF_7129_CR Camera Driver
Chicony_CNF_7129_CR Camera Driver for VISTA 64 WIN7 64 bit -
-
I got it finally.. omg all damn night. It is a Sonix Chicony 260 USB 2.0 2.0M UVC Webcam and the way I got it to work was when I was running the ASUS drivers it was causing a driver conflict in Windows 7 so Windows update was not able to update it. I removed all associated drivers/software with the device and told WIndows to search for a driver. It then found a default one from 2008 and I made it search the folders where I had the Sonix drivers from Asus. I was able to get it to update to a 2009 driver after that.
I hope this helps someone. I will be putting together a list of drivers and instructions together to do a fresh install of Win7 64-bit. -
Although I got the second drive installed and working/recognized I have not yet moved the OS over.
Will probably do it tomorrow - then next week the blu-ray upgrade. -

Here's screen cap of my G72's desktop with SRS control panel. Just wondering did your G73 have SRS premium sound or SRS premium sound HD? If SRS works on my G72, it should work for your G73 which is newer.

edit: unsnagged -
Hey i think my BIOS doesnt recognize my Intel SSD i just put in my G73...It shows up in device manager in windows but doesn't show up in my computer under "hard disk" drives category. Any ideas on how to fix this? (drivers already installed)
-
Quagmire LXIX Have Laptop, Will Travel!

You'll see it in My Computer now.

Im still waiting for mine.. hopefully it will get here on wensday or thursday. Most things that my family ship from the states take 6 days from the time it leaves the states. Im getting cold feet waiting tho!!

The problem you may be having is due to Win7 assigning a default driver when you do the clean install.
Make sure to remove the Win7 driver from the device. -
Thanks. It worked. -
Just for the record it will work with HDMI 5.1 surround audio out.
I have HDMI going into my audio receiver and am getting full Dolby Digital surround make sure you click the icon of the RealTek audio and enable surround out over HDMI.
The person who PM'ed me about no sound over HDMI is not correct. The laptop is full HDMI 1.3 compliant including passing Blu-ray audio streams. -
Ok, finally got my Intel SSD installed and working correctly, with a Windows Index rating of 7.7. My lowest index rating is the processor at 7.0
Did clean install on the SSD with Windows 7 Ultimate x64.
Downloaded the Video driver/setup software from the Asus website.
Had a PCI simple communications controller driver issue. Fixed it by installing the drivers off of the Driver and Utility DVD. Also installed/updated other drivers from the same DVD.
System runs like I thought it would now, mainly due to the SSD. Again, with all the power from memory, cpu, graphics, a 7200RPM drive dosnt go along nicely. So far I am happy with the Intel SSD G2 160GB.
Oh I wouldn't get the 80GB version, as you wont have much space left if you install Windows 7, Office 2007, and other various programs. -
I got the 160GB. The SSD is amazing when you are used to platter HD.
Since there is no RAID, the X-1 and spend the extra $200 you save on a SSD is actually a much better deal than buying an A2.
I am amazed by the SSD in this laptop and could not be happier.
Still need to do that pesky BD bezel upgrade though. -
FIY...
Before SSD boot time: 1 minute 30 seconds
After SSD boot time: 27 seconds
wooooooo -
I'd like to get an ssd, but I could only afford a 128gb model. I would quickly fill that up and end up running a large amount of stuff from the second (non ssd) drive, so I'm not sure of the benefit for me.
-
I Install only the softwares that i use the most, Windows, Office, CAD, CallOfDuty, Crysis and still have about 35GB left.
-
For people who are looking for a backpack that will fit the G73 notebook, the Targus Backpack XL will house the notebook fine.
-
What was your Windows HDD rating? -
Windows Index rating before 5.9 after 7.1 -
Anyone having any problems yet? Read about a few others have had and now I'm a bit worried. Hope ATi releases some new drivers.
-
X-1 + SSD for $1600 >>>>>>> A-2 for $1600 by a mile.
I am playing world of warcraft 1920x1080 every setting maxed just like a desktop even in Northrend and I cannot detect even a hitch in the framerate.
And it is SO QUIET!!!!!
Don't even get me started on buttery smooth 1080p video playback.
I just honestly hate they keyboard and am having a very hard time adjusting it is full sized but very weird chiclet feel.
It is like stepping into the future of laptops and such an amazing value compared to Alienware and that ilk.
I am blowing AWAY $4,000.00 laptops with this.
Extremely happy customer - get the A1 for 1600 or the x1 for 1400.
the a2 is not a deal - in fact i dont know why they made it - just the other 2 models would have been fine. I feel I got a screaming deal for 1400 so happy i jumped on it. -
-
I am waiting for the A1 to be readily available in Canada.
I really want the Blu-Ray drive to play BluRays when I am away from home on a trip or something. I am sure they would look sweet on this screen.
Do you think that by the time that the A1 is out and about in Canada and the USA (by mid March or April) that anything else might come along? Like a laptop with an SSD as its main drive for a reasonable value? -
I put a 920xm and hyber-x cas7 ram in my rig
-
What timings and speed are you getting on the RAM? -
-
for the x1 owners, here is solid deal on a backpack if you dont mind the XPS written on it.

thanks and +rep.
$30 for that bag is a steal. They are basically rebranded mobile edge I think. Very good bags.
Just bought one -
I am going to begin my Blu-ray upgrade today or tomorrow and will share how it goes.
Cross your fingers lol first time I've swapped a bezel. -
Werry333, I'll be following in your foot steps in a couple of days.
Please send any tips on difficult parts, if any.
Did you buy the sony BD writer? I have that on route, and it was what the other poster used. -
-
Does anyone know if this caddy will fit the X1???? It's for the G71 so it should be close.
