    My scale says its about half way between 4-5 lbs. Of course, a bathroom scale must have a great margin of error for that small of wieght.

    Subjectively speaking, the notebook is very light. And the standard battery pack only wieghs a few ounces.

    So I just received my Merom W7J from PROPortable, quite happy with their service and ship time (free two-day shipping for students = win =D). I'm a little obsessive, so I decided to do a clean install of WinXP, with some room partitioned off for a Linux install. Unfortunately, I've come across a few problems:

    1) The audio doesn't work. I installed the Realtek driver, but the only audio devices are listed in Device Manager as "Bluetooth Hands-free Audio" and "Bluetooth Stereo Audio". Any suggestions?

    2) I tried to install the Motorola modem driver, but it gives me an "Install failed!" message, using both the driver from Asus' web site and the driver on the provided cd. Again, suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

    For audio, install the UAA drivers first (which can be found on the W7J drivers disk). See

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/835221/en-us

    for explanation.

    As for the modem driver, what COM port is it trying to install with?

    At least for my Z33, the Modem is part of the HD Audio system. When you get the audio working, the modem driver should work as well.

    Before you can install the Sound Driver or the modem driver, you need to install the High Definition Audio Package first. It is listed as "UAA Driver" on the driver CD that comes with the W7J.

    EDIT - Looks like chemistry beat me to it!

    Well, I've had many years of experience with the pearl color models - going back to the S5.... They show dirt more and yet clean up very nicely. Dust seems to show up more on the darker colors, but there's always going to be something! It's called a can of compressed air and a damp papertowel!

    hi can a w7j owner do this

    Look under device Manager-->Monitor-->Plug n Play Monitor***-->Details Tab--> You will see the Device Instance ID's listed in the white box like this...
    DISPLAY\QDS005C\4&.....

    QDS is short for Quanta Display Systems
    AUO -> AU Optronics
    SEC -> Samsung
    LPL -> LG Philips
    CMO-> Chi Mei optoelectrics (optronics vs optoelectrics????)
    cpt-> Chungwa picture tubes
    hsd-> hann star
    sny->sony
    tos->toshiba

    So I can figure out the stats of the lcd used in the w7j please.

    is your computer connected to an lcd monitor?

    That id comes up to a lcd television.

    edit actually that is not a lcd at all but a television tuner made by gadmei. Do you own one of those?

    there should be some other things listed under the monitor tab in the hardware manager... check each of them until you get one that has one of the letter codes listed above in it. (the one you chose is probably for your s-video or vga out).

    Hi guys, I live in Quebec (Canada), and I'm actually looking to buy a white ASUS W7J.

    I absolutely want to get one with the T7200 Core 2 Duo processor in it.

    This is the revision model I have found: W7J-3P075P(white). But it seems that this model is only listed on Switzerland website, does anyone knows if there actually another revision model number for a North America version, or if it is just not and won't be available in NA?

    Thanks in advance,
    Phil

    No, I don't own one of those. I do use an LCD projector from time to time.

    I followed your reqest exactly. You asked for the "Plug n Play Monitor". That's what came up. My W7J was not hooked up to any external display.

    If you want something else, let me know.

    What media do you recommend for the W7J?

    I have a few new SONY DVD-R (4.7gb 120min 1-8X compatable) on the box it states, "Caution! This disk is a new standard- high speed media- in conformity with DVD-R for General Version2.0/8X speed DVD-R Revision 3.0...always check if your device is compatable as using this disk on same drives/recorders might damage the disk or device."

    I apologize for asking something here ...

    But dealing with the thickness of the W7J and W3J, how thick they are? From the pics I have seen they look rather thicker than the Vaios and Stinkpads.

    I am still a 'sleeper' shopper, deciding for compact but also with less tech problems.

    thanks,

    Has anyone opened the machine?I'm wondering if there is a dedicated fan for the gpu, or the machine has just one.Lately i'm getting the feeling that everytime i run some cpu intensive application the gpu's temperature skyrockets as well.If they are not connected on the same heatsink i don't see the reason for that.I understand that the machine is really tight but air is pretty much insulating.Can't have the cpu going on 80C and on the same time the gpu for no reason go to 78.
    It would take some time.
    If that's the case i'm getting really dissappointed with asus.
    First the totally stupid touchpad design and then this making the laptop almost unusable because of the heat when running cpu frying apps.

    Oh well,bought it now and can't really do much about it.

    Ads1969 - Vista will run fine with 1.5gb. I ran the beta with 1gb and found it performed quite well.

    kanenas - The GPU and CPU are cooled by a shared heatsink and a single fan. About the temps, that sounds high. I never break 60c. Maybe try spraying some compressed air to clean out the heatsink opening.

    I've never had my machine go to 80 degrees. When undervolted, it will go to 62 degrees max. It will idle at around 50.

    What do you mean never?Ok maybe 80 for windows is a lot but it reaches easily this temperature on linux.
    But no more than 60?With the full processor load on full speed it can't stay that low.
    Or it could just be that my linux temperature sensor is wrong.
    Either way it gets hot.Above 70 for sure

    Mine never goes over 60c. Even when gaming or crunching or encoding.

    Of course, undervolting the CPU has a lot to do with this.

    Is Undervolting a laptop a reliable guide for a newbie? Or is Simple Undervolting Tutorial - Pentium M Dothan a better guide? Would the steps in either guide work for a Core Duo? Is there an "Undervolting for Dummies" type of guide?

    Which is a better utility for undervolting: NHC or RMClock? Do I need to turn Power4Gear off?

    Should I even consider undervolting when I always use the notebook plugged to a power source and with a notebook cooler?

    Greetings, Been lurking about this site and forums for almost a month now and due to the great reviews and assorted information I found in this thread I was convinced to finally buy a shiny new W7J from milestonepc.com (with better specs for cheaper than through Newegg).

    Got my W7J (with core 2 duo 7200/1Gb/160Gb and Vista preinstalled) yesterday. I'm already fed up with Vista (the mashine is pretty slow with it I would say) and would like to roll back to WinXP. Could anyone please share (rapidshare.com) the images (one for OS and another for Drivers) of disks that come with W7J? What I found after installing a fresh copy of WinXP is that I can't get drivers for video camera, bluetooth and have 3 urecognized "Base System Devices" after installing all the drivers available from asus.com site.
    Anyone interested - I could share the image of the drivers disk for Vista (as the Vista itself is a Russian version).
    Thanks.

    Could anyone please share English versions of Vista system and driver CDs? Guess I'll get used to Vista, but not the Russian version anyways.

    Nope, I didn't. Just want to install what ASUS engineers meant to be installed not to be forced into unexpected troubles (this is what happened to my Toshiba 5205 which tended to freeze with custom installed drivers).

    I must be blind. At download section for W7j (with URL that is http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us) I don't see stuff like that. Where did you find it?

    they should be here http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us just select notebook; w7j

    here are the links:

    http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/W7F/Camera_LO_XP_060725.zip (liteon)
    http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/W7F/Camera_CR_XP_060426.zip (chicony) they have two different cams for our w7j, but generally they are the liteons

    http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/W7F/BTooth_XP_060725.zip (bluetooth)

    edit: hmmm it is weird, you gave me the same link aswell for the downloads section... my only conclusion is you might of selected a localized site ie: germany and they havent updated the links. but other than that i dont see why you cant see them.

    anyways, if you want i'll post up all the links.

    I'd be extremely thankful if you provided any additional links you see.

    I'm uploading compressed drivers disk that comes for Vista and will post a link to it a bit later (it turned out to be international).

    Concerning adding English interface language to my localized Vista Home Premium. The easiest way I found was to install an English Vista Ultimate. Thanks to dumb OEM M$ licensing, I activated it using OEM ASUS license w/o any problems (that binds to BIOS).
    So I'm going to have MacOS X, Vista, XP and Ubuntu installed each on it's own 10Gb partition. What a charm! ;) That's related to my job, not just for playing.
