well i'm kinda on the same boat with GSMD, having just purchased w7j preinstalled with vista, I am already getting sick of it. I tried installing a clean copy of XP only to find that half of the drivers that came with the w7j only works for vista , then I tried to download all the drivers from the asus website all went well until i checked the device list to find that there are like 5 unknown devices and a few others i forgot... so i was wondering if anyone is kind enough to upload an image of their xp driver disk?
-
all drivers needed is on the asus site.
-
hey, have any of you guys with vista experienced this problem?
Say if make windows do nothing when the lid closes, does the LCD turns back on when you open it?
At the moment, it doesn't turn back on for me. What gives?
I need to put it to sleep and then wake it up -
I've created WinXP installation disk with DriverPacks (a collection of drivers) and RVM (the latest MS hotfixes) integrated. So what I had to do after such a modified version been installed was to install a driver for modem, bluetooth, camera and card reader, those fit from CD that comes for Vista and download nvidia driver from asus.com. That utility that displays volume level as you change it and the like already comes with DriverPacks. So far so good.
The real trouble I've got is Power4Gear. The one that comes for Vista doesn't work under XP. Could anyone please share it or point where to download it? -
OK, here's the link to drivers disk that comes with W7J with Vista preinstalled: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=NY0DQ51H

So I just got my w7j over the weekend. Overall i'm very pleased with it's performance, size screen and everything else about this machine.
I love everything about it... well ALMOST everything.
2 words.
Sweaty Palms.
The palm rests get pretty fraggin' warm, not hot but just enough to give me clamy hands.
Anyone have any suggestions or mocking gestures for me? -
has anyone got them?
Cheers -

Well, after a few days partition magic has pretty much violated me in the most delicate of cavities.
I decided to use it to merge my 2 partitions. It created an unmovable, undeletable, unmanageable folder on the primary partition. Loading windows seems to take longer with each passing reboot. I already got 2 BSOD (made me a big nostalgic) and Safe mode will not load (freezes at a certain point).
I think i'm going to have to restore. It hasn't even been a week!
New game plan:
1) Use restore disk to get everything back up and running.
2) Convert to NTFS
3) Norton Ghost c:\
4) Wipe again, reload Ghosted image. as 1 partition.
Anyone done something like this ? or know an easier way? -
do it like this post. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=1647022&postcount=322

From reading this thread, it seems like the W7j has worse battery life, build quality, and performance than the W3J? I suppose some of that is justified by the $200 price difference, but I'd expect battery life to be much better than the 2.5 hours people are reporting.
-
It actually last close 3 to 3.5hrs for me with WLAN on and bluetooth off.
I find that the build quality is good if not the best. I bought an a8jp before and I have to say W7J is much better. -
3 hours for me with wireless and bluetooth off. If you need more battery life, there's always the option of the 9 cell. I've never seen a W3J in person, but I can assure you that the W7J has very good build quality. As for performance, besides better video, both notebooks should be pretty close. I chose the W7J over the W3J because I was coming from a 14" notebook and wanted something a bit more portable with dedicated video, preferably Nvidia. It's a matter of personal preference. I'm happy with my purchase, though I do have to admit that the W3J was very hard to overlook.
-
I know this has been mentioned before, but I cannot find the post. I just wondering what material our W7J lid is made of? Does the finish wears off in a span of a year?
Besides the hot temps on it, I don't have any cons on it, only that I keep pressing the 'fcn' instead of control and the 'home' key instead of Backspace... will take time to get used to it but I love the keyboard -
-
i've noticed the lid gets oil marks from fingers pretty easily...
hey guys...
anyone notice audio stuttering problems under vista?
this is with the default vista drivers... i've installed the new 1.63 drivers from the realtek.com.tw site and same thing...
generally stutters when i'm actually doing stuff... if its idling its fine...
also with the external monitor and the geforce 7400go...
does any one have any issues with the external monitor flicking???
Thanks -
-
-
i've changed the monitor cable twice... -
-
-
I've handled the DV2000 quite a bit and though it's a nice computer, I believe the W7J is still superior in quality. As for the keyboard, I haven't noticed any wear after 3 months of heavy use, except for a bit of shine on the spacebar and touchpad.
-
I got another question,
How do you guys fix the problem with the volume on the speakers when playing DVDs? It only happens on DVD since anything else I can hear the sound loudly.
Thanks, -
This concerns people having the core duo and not the core 2 but still.
Has anybody tried running the heat tests of intel TAT?
Without any undervolting my cpu reached 95C on one core and 97 on the other and i was sure it would go higher if left..
Is it a problem just on my machine or everybody has the same problem?
Someone on a previous post advised to use compressed air to clean the heatsink which i did,but it didn't make any difference. -
I don't get this part
Copy d:\xprec\WIN51 to d:\xprec\WIN51IP
Copy d:\xprec\WIN51 to d:\xprec\WIN51IP.SP2
can someone please explain to me? Does he mean copy the content of WIN51 to WIN51IP? Also WIN51IP does not exist in my i386... do i ahve to create it?
and while i'm at it, i used the bootiting software to align the 4k cluster.. anyway to confirm that this has been done properly? thanks.
-
The guide at Neowin Forums said the files are needed for a flawless installation but didn't explain why. Other forums stated that if the WIN51 files are absent during installation, you'll get an "Insert XP disc into drive A" message. -
thanks
successfully created my bootable disc and system is back and running without any problems
only thing i'd like to know is why my 100gig hard drive only shows up as a 91gig hard drive. i know 1gig is occupied by the recovery partition.
so my 2 qusetions:
1: how do i get the most outta my hd space?
2: any use for keeping the recovery partition? if it's for the asus recovery disc, i don't think i'll ever use it.
thanks. -

i've had this laptop for one week now
pretty satisfied up til this point ... and i just noticed that a lot of people didn't get the sleeve for it. I got the sleeve and also an asus laptop bag... i guess it depends on which store u get it from
anyway, i'm just a little disappointed with the overall speed
i did a fresh install, which already helped a lot. but i still find that there is a bit of lag when i try to mulitask... like watching a movie and doing thigns on the browser... is there a way to control or optimize the duo core?
i got the core 2 duo 1.66 model -
I have some quick questions. I just got the W7J C2D and hope someone could answer some questions / issues I have had.
1) Does anyone have the extended battery and real-world expectations on battery life?
2) Has anyone had issues bring back the computer from sleep/hibernate where the screen remains black?
3) Do people feel that the exhaust on the right is mildly/uncomfortably warm?
4) Can you / does this computer handle 64 bit programs / 64 bit Vista? Any benefits / drawbacks from 64 bit?
5) Any necessary programs / tweaks for Vista and the W7J?
6) Any issues that I should be aware of with this PC? -
I have read the reviews here now, and i must say that the W7J seems very attractive. I need a new notebook to use at the university, i don't really need to be able to play on it, so i would actually rather have a GMA gfx card to save power, but oh well..you can't have everything =)
I have a little question though, does everyone agree that the microphone is bad? Or has it been improved in some of the revisions?
And since it still isnt available here before May-July according to the resellers, i am thinking of buying it from the US, and attach a danish/swedish keyboard, but is that even possible since we have bit different keyboard layout.
I'm also thinking about getting a 2ghz while i'm at it, but i'm worried about the extra heating, so is there anyone here with a 2ghz that still thinks it's sufficently quit and cool? -
-
Thanks for answering =). About the keyboard switch, i meant switching the layout on the nootbook but i just found out that we have an additional key so that wont be possible. I guess i'll just have to wait those month untill it gets available here once again
-
hi guys...
quick question...
KVR667D2S5-1G
1GB 667MHz(PC5300) DDR2 NON ECC CL5 200pin SO-DIMM
can i use PC5300 mem in this laptop?
on the kingston site it says use the 533mhz one...
but its the same price and i rather get faster mem if in case down the line i need it to upgrade another machine...
doesnt hurt to buy faster right? even if it wont be utilized... -
Yep, that's fine. I'm using the same thing in mine, except a different mfg. Runs great! -
yes, Mushkin, Kingston, Kingmax, Corsair (Micron), as well as Patriot DDR533/667 (PC4300/5300/5400) all works with 1GB Modules. Only thing I am not too sure is if this notebook supports 2GB modules. Getting a piece next week, see if it works. (Supposedly, 945 express chipsets supports 4gb max).

-
anyone know how to use the audio gateway?
the pc can detect and make the connection to my phone... but it can't make a call
and is there a software that allow me to control what to do? the only options are connect/disconnect at the moment -
sometimes it's good to know direct suppliers for memory =) once i got the unit and installed it, I'll let you guys know...
but MSRP of $300 a pop is steep -
Hello everyone, I've been reading all your posts and it has been very valuable.
Now, to the matter. I recently got a W7J-3116C (the white one with Vista). I love it! Yet Vista is making my life pretty hard, one glitch at a time. The first one I would like to solve is that after 2-3 hours of use my Western Digital usb external hard drive will cease to work. Vista still loads it as a drive yet it doesn't access it.
I also posted this issue in the Asus support forum but no replies so far. I really appreciate your answers. Have a good day!
Javier -
Are you sure it's vista's fault?Maybe your external hdd overheats. I had the same problem with a couple of them. Can't remember right now any vista programs that will read the temperature of a usb hdd but have a look around.
-
Hi everyone,
I am considering a W7J or the Santa Rosa W7S refresh, and I was hoping one of the W7J owners out there could help me.
What the is maximum resolution that the W7J supports on the external display? I was hoping I could hook it up to a 24" flat panel for 1920x1200 goodness. Oh how I wish that there was a DVI output!
Thanks! -
-
I have a dell 24" monitor hooked to W7J at native res. Not as pretty as dvi but once you get used to it, it looks GREAT.
-
Has anyone disassembled the machine?I went as far as opening the bay underneath to clean the fan and the heatsink but no further since i didn't want to void the warranty.I'm thinking to upgrade the wifi card to a more powerful model.
-
-
i'm thinking to get W7s, can someone tell me if W7 series is really good? like no drama at all? how about battery life, performance things like that...cheers
