so do you hear your dvd drive getting accessed?

press ctrl+ alt + del to see if the comptuer is responsive and reboots. (if any lights flash again)

the dvd seems to be accessed, it sounds like a clicking noise that you can feel from it.

no good with ctrl-alt-del thats the first thing i tried actually :)

im all out of ideas to be honest, I've tried an external screen but no difference...

had it been a desktop computer i would have done a clear cmos, but i dont know how on a laptop?

Remove the battery. Unplug it. Press the powwee button and hold it down for 5 seconds.

Replace the battery. Pug it in. Try booting up.

I was wondering what all you other w7j owners use as a sleeve for your notebooks? I just got my w7j a couple days ago, and I ordered a Booq Vyper XM sleeve for it. Unfortunately, when I took my laptop out of the sleeve today, I noticed a couple (very small) scratches and dings across the case that were not there before. I'm very disappointed in the advertised "non-scratch interior" that Booq claims to have, and was further disappointed to find that upon reviewing their warranty and return policy, they are not liable for any damage to your laptop, and at most they will only exchange your sleeve for another one (they won't even refund the money). I understand the overwhelming legal consequences if they did hold themselves liable for damage, but man all I wanted was a refund so I can buy a better sleeve. No there were no lingering pebbles or lint or anything else inside the sleeve that could have caused the scratches and dents. I treat all my stuff with extreme TLC. No I did not receive these nicks/dents before putting the laptop in the sleeve.

So anyways... now that my brand new w7j has some blemishes on it already... as frustrated as I am, there's not much I can do, and I don't want any more. Any suggestions for sleeves?

I already tried that with no luck :(

Anyways ive packed it and im calling the company I bought it from tomorrow and asking for a refund as a first option, otherwise I guess they will have to repair it and I dont really have the time to be without it :(

I use a Sony sleeve for thier 13.3 inch SZ series when I need a sleeve inside a larger backpack or case.

I also have a beautiful 13 inch Stucano Work Out case that is non-scrach on the inside. It's what I use for everyday use.

    Thank you!

I was going to buy a tucano, model BF-S-131
They say it's designed for 13.1" but i think it's elastic enough to fit on the w7j...
    Dimensions(cm): 31 x 23 x 3
    http://www.tucano.it/ENG/html_esterno/new_computerbags/frame_computerbags.htm
    it will cost about 15$...

    what do you think?

just get a program that reads the memory speed, that should be the speed since the slowest memory sets the speed.

That doesn't help. As I said, I want to know what the speed rating and timings of the soldered ram is. I know what the system is running at, I just want to know about that one module.

I've been using a ZeroShock 14" for two months now and my W7J remains unblemished. I've just placed an order to Shinza.com for a ZeroShock 13" which just became available.

You can also read the posts on the Good Sleeve for W7J? thread for more suggestions.

    Hi to all!
I have just discovered this really helpful forum as I have an interest in the W7J since I am looking for something with a wider screen than a 12" but not too large and not too heavy. Hence, the W7J seems to fit perfectly. In Europe, the new version with Merom inside is being released so I might take this one, but I have a few questions:

    1. first, is the battery life going down with the Merom?
    2. what about the weight of the unit? It would be really great if somebody could actually weight the W7 both with and without the battery, as well as the AC.
    3. Compared to the W3J or A8JM...is it a lot lighter and smaller? Because I wonder if one of those models might not suit my needs better...
    4. finally, it seems that Linux is working on the W7J, but with a lot of problems, right?

Well, I guess I am done! Thanks for your answers!

i have been using the Tucano 13.3" sleeve
Its a perfect fit... that was my major concern. Pretty well padded too but I would not want to drop the lappy even if the sleeve is on.

Ill post pictures for you later today hopefully

there is a problem i have been having with my laptop though which i thought i would ask some of u about... the wireless connection keeps dropping off and then connects again in like 2 seconds.... it does this once about every 2 mins or so... i installed the latest drivers etc but issues still there... my other laptops wireless works perfectly fine at the same spot with no drop outs... anyone else know a solution to this ??

    Hello,

I'm considering to buy a laptop and the w7j looks really interresting!
But I'd like to know if someone use an external screen with a high def (like 1680*1050 on 20" or even 1900*1200 on a 24")?
If so, how does look the picture quality?

    Thanks!

I'm having some troubles with my cd/dvd-writer....
does everyone have a TSSTcorp TS-L632D with firmware AS05?
The telephone support keeps telling me to upgrade the firmware, but i don't think that's the problem...
    Thank you!

hey fellows I am considering a asus w7j and was wondering if the dvd bay is hot swapable with a battery. i was kind of disapointed with the battery life on the w7j but if i could use two batterys i think that would fix the problem.

My w7j keeps randomly freezing up for like 3~5 seconds at a time. so i tried reinstalling XP twice already and it still does that. so i thought that it was the XP CD that i have that was causing the problem so i tried the recovery CD that came with the laptop whenever i try to reformat, it's giving me this erorr "error #1826" "Free space not found". what is going on?!

can someone help me with the freezing or the recovery process?! thanks guys.

No the DVD bay is not hot swappable. It is on the W3J but not the W7J. Can always consider the 9-cell battery for the W7J which should get you in the range of 4.5 hr but it will stick out the back a bit more than the standard 6-cell battery that comes with the W7J

Did you try recovery from the hidden partition on your hard drive?

Did you previously repartition your hard drive with your own XP Pro CD? How many partitions? What file system (FAT32, NTFS)?

I'd guess there's something about the hard disk's partitioning which is causing the restore CD's setup program to misread the available free space on your drive. See the following:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315688/en-us

I assume this does not happen when trying to setup XP Pro using your own XP Pro disk. The 3-5 second freeze ups may be related. Did the hard disk make any clicking or grinding sound during this period. Might try downloading diagnostic tools from the hard drive manufacturer's website. If you're running the stock Hitachi drive (at least for my W7J), run the drive fitness test which can be downloaded at

    http://www.hitachigst.com/warranty/jsp/arma22h.jsp

What kind of performance are you guys getting from your 3945abg wireless cards? I get a perfect 54mbit connection, full green, and i rarely download over 200k/s in my home. However the wired computers in my house get over 400k/s. I have a buffalo whr-g54s router with dd-wrt on it and i have messed around with almost every setting to no avail. I have also tried a similiar linksys router. Should i invest in a wireless card, if so which would you recommend?

Does anyone have a clue about why my W7J won't keep the "Windows Classic style" visual appearance? About every other reboot, the laptop will revert to the Windows XP style. I tried unloading all the Asus utilities from startup, but that hasn't helped.

I'm getting close to blowing away the stock Windows install. I'd rather not do that if it's unnecessary though.

    Thanks.

I didn't too, it was just what they told my at the telephone support.... they told me they would send it by email, obviously they sent me nothing.... So tomorrow i'll phone back pretending my RMA code to repair the dvd writer...

thank you very much for your support, guys! ;)

Ok, that's like a few people out of all those who have W7's... anyone ever think that they're drive may have went bad? I mean it's certainly not common, but let's just say it was simply reading a dvd movie - without say AsusDVD installed on your system, you wouldn't have the decorder to play them. Sometimes people just say they can't read anything when really all they tried to do was play a movie...... so that could be it... but if it's really data cd's and dvd's.... it really doesn't sound like a physical problem... because either you'd get no cd read or write or no dvd read or write... but not the way you described.

.... For anyone to say they have this problem and it'll be the last time they buy any Asus - just calm down... that's a loaded comment. It would be one thing if everyone who bought a W7 had something big wrong with theirs, but for a couple or of thousands to have a little problem like this ridiculous.... I'm surprised you didn't say you'd make it your life's work to keep people from buying Asus.....

    Anyway, getting off that -

The Merom W7j's finally came in yesterday and all the advanced orders shipped and there's still about a dozen left.... I know a lot of you were asking when they'd be in.

i continue to have a problem with my asus w7J's wireless card
connection drops even if i am sitting right next to an access point... have tried all sorts of solutions with different routers even adhoc networks... but every 2 mins the connection drops.... plus i just realized that w7j power adapters are made by a company called DELTA.. this is the same crappy company that makes chargers for all 3rd world country products like senao etc....

this is the last time i buy an asus laptop too !

Its the same company that makes all of asus ac adapters. It is also the same company that makes most other ac adapters and its the same company that makes very reliable ac adapters for asus becuase the rma rate is very low. Did you ever consider that maybee just maybee it doesnt like your router? Maybee you should try a different access point and see how that works.? Maybee you should revert the access point to its defaults without security enabled? Its not a broadcom card they use in dells which really does suck. its an intel card.

I do think it's a physical problem, because if i write a cd and it results unreadable to any drive i try, what else could it be?
I have the same firmware of any w7j owner...
Anyway, tomorrow i'm sending it to the asus center, so next week i can tell you more...

Thanks K4ez4r, please update when you receive your aus. BTW, who's paying for the shipping? I regretted that I bought Asus instead of IBM.

Edit: Not only I'm having trouble with the CD-Rom but I don't think it's compatible with Memorex DVDRW because it spins really loud where it rattles like crazy.

Ok, so you can't actually write a cd or dvd either then? You say it'll do something, but it's not actually making something you could read or other systems could read.... It sounds more like you may have screwed up the lasers... that could have happened in shipping or even a little jolt while in use - one you probably wouldn't even remember. Asus should be able to swap it for you, but they may not be convinced it's the drive and may want to see it and make sure it's not something else. But call them because they'll take care of it. Albert and Patrick are can't miss if you're looking for someone in support that I'd trust.

ASUS will pay all the shipping costs. I don't know how it works abroad, in Italy we have a 2-year "door to door" warranty: you phone 'em and get a code for the courier, who comes the day after to pick up your pc. ASUS guarantees the repairs are done within 5 days.

I'm still happy I've bought asus, just don't understand why they put such a cheap dvd burner on a high level notebook...

Mmm... i'm sure there's something more, because sometimes it makes very loud noises while it's reading a cd/dvd... It seems there's an helicopter in my room! :D
Anyway, i'm telling you more next week ;)

OK, well I'm familiar...... I'm curious if you're not seating the the disc correctly?! It's obviously hitting off of somthing, or something is loose, because it's certainly not normal. The super slim drives like on the W7 are more fragile, but if you're good with the machine it certainly wouldn't give you any problems. So, I'm going to say it has to be something physical, but you can get that swapped out without having to send the entire unit in.

You think the drive in the W7j is cheap? The drive in that unit is a Toshiba/Samsung model TS-L632D, which is the same model in the V6j, W5f, Z35f, and the V1j as well. It's a good drive... and expensive as well. All drives are picky with certain media, and notebook drives a bit more so than desktop drives, but I've been using this drive for a while now on my W7 and I prefer it to the panasonic drive that used to be used on the old V6v/va and W5a... that was a good drive as well, but this is 8x instead of 4x..

Has any one upgraded their W7J to Core 2 Duo Processor? Asus has release a new bios update for W7J to support the new Merom processor from Intel. I have updated my bios and will be installing the new Core 2 Duo next week. I was wonder if anyone here has done the upgrade and would like to share their experience.

Hmm... that seems to be a common issue - I think the review even mentioned it. That's the only thing that I don't like about my W7J... the DVD drive is really really loud (and yes, I am pretty sure I've seated the disc correctly, although I've noticed this isn't always as easy as it sounds). Other than that, I love the W7J... no connection problems here (knock on wood)...

Justin, What media do you recommend for the W7J? I have a few new SONY DVD-R (4.7gb 120min 1-8X compatable) on the box it states "Caution! This disk is a new standard- high speed media- in conformity with DVD-R for General Version2.0/8X speed DVD-R Revision 3.0...always check if your device is compatable as using this disk on same drives/recorders might damage the disk or device."

Can someone please weigh their W7J notebook I've read in a few places that the notebook is not actually 4.3 or 4.4 lbs but is 5lbs notebook.
It's 4lbs without the battery and the battery is another 1lbs.

Can someone please weight their notebook with the battery and let me know.

    Thank You.
