Powering down one core will not extend your battery life. When not in use, the advanced sleep-states power the cores right down automatically.

    Hey everyone,

    Just wanted to say hi!
I just got my W7J yesterday and so far am very impressed with it (but then again, my comparison laptops are an Averatec 3270 and an old Dell)

    Aah.
I'm planning to get a W7J and upgrade the network card to an Atheros, and I was wondering if I should get PCI or PCI-e.

I -think- W7J is compatible only for PCI-e, but I'm not positive and just wanted to make sure.

    Thanks.

    eastheaven,

The card is a mini pci-e card. Please take plenty of pictures on how to get your notebook apart and replace it with an atheros card. I am dying to do the same here as well. Cheers!

I just bought a new W7j, and it seems it's been refreshed too!

    It now has:
    Core Duo - 2.0Ghz
    1 Gb of RAM

I'm not sure if there are other changes but they were the obvious ones.

Question about the W7J! Is there a DVI adaptor available? I have a HP L2335 23.5" LCD, and it'd be a darn waste to use VGA when I hook it up to my screen.

Is there a REALLY big difference between VGA and DVI?

SkyKic - from where did you purchase your refreshed W7J?
The processor speed upgrade isn't so important to me, but doubling the soldered RAM is quite the selling point for me.

    Hello, Newbie here..!

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and currently chosing between W3j and W7j. However it seems impossible were I'm located to see the W7j live, hence this question about its thickness:
In the specs the height is stated as 1.142"~1.453" but from pictures I have seen it does not seem to have a "slope" shape. I suspect the higher measurement is from where the webcam sits.

If somebody please could verify this or in any other way sort this out for me I would be much grateful!

Anyone have any problems with the Splendid program? Mine doesn't appear to do anything. Ie, I click on the program icon and it appears on the windows task bar at the bottom. Clicking on that doesnt do anything except highlight the active splendid task bar button. Pressing the Function + C key as described on the manual does nothing either.

mine was imported from Taiwan directly, but i'm not sure if it's 1 gb on the motherboard or 512mb on motherboard and 512mb stick of RAM.
I can check for you, but I'm not sure how to do it.

I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it, restarted computer. Still cant get splendid to do anything.

Ive sent an email to tech support in the meantime. I'm not too worried about it but its just a mildly annoying niggle in an otherwise fantastic laptop!

    silverwolf0 -
I used the progrm you recommended, and it says 512mb in slot 1 and nothing in slot 2. but overall it has 1gb of RAM.
So my guess is that it's 512mb on Mboard and 512mb in slot 1.
It does have the 2.0ghz cpu though.

Ws hoping those bastards would put a 1GB on the soldered part. Oh well, I don't think I need that much RAM.

    Hi sohe68,

You're right; it's not sloped (when closed), but flat. The webcam part is in fact a tiny bit thicker.
The somewhat smaller (lighter) size made me choose the W7J; have no regrets whatsoever!

    Hi,

I've read several comments about upgrading the network-card because of problems with spontaneous disconnects etc etc, but I'd like to state that I have had no problems with the standard build-in card at all. I'm running it through a LinkSys accesspoint and havent had one connection-drop yet. Used the W7J for surfing, working via remote desktop and for gaming (played BF2 with the wireless for hours) and it's steady as can be. This is in a big house; mainly working downstairs or at the balcony at the back while the accesspoint is located on the 1st floor at the front. In my area are four to six other wireless access points active.
Buying a brandnew W7J together with a new wireless card looks a bit over the top, so an idea might be to have a go with the build-in card first to determine what it can(t) do for you. It really isn't that bad because of two or three complaints in this forum. Maybe it is good enough (I really dont see why it shouldnt) and at least this saves you some money. OTOH: when having troubles you might want to look into the rest of your WiFi lan first to see if the problems lie elsewhere.

Does anyone know how to switch off the Asus sound when you boot-up the laptop?
It also does it when you start it after hibernation.
I don't think muting the speakers work.

    quoting from old posts

    "CalebSchmerge07-05-2006, 11:03 AM
I found that sound amusing when I first got my computer, but with classes and such, I quickly had to turn it off. If you go into the boot options (right when you turn the computer on, press F2 (I think, it will say on the screen), then one of the pages has a boot sound option, or something very similar, switch it to off, and you are gold."

Try it out to see if it works =)

Hey guys, I've noticed that when on battery power, sometimes my w7j will freeze for about 5 seconds intermittently and then go back to normal. When plugged in, the problem doesn't appear. Any ideas as to what might be happening?

I have exactly the same problem, but no one can tell me whats wrong. My wireless connection drops 95% of the time, or never last more than 5 mins if I dont use wireless with the power plugged in :( and then my router just stalls, only fix is the pull out the power. But when I use wireless with power cord, its perfect and never drops. This is on my W3V.

    1. Upgrade to latest drivers from asus downloads. You can try the same driver from the intel site but it can conflict with hcontrol
    2. Change from intel client to microsoft client
    3. if the steps above do not help. try a different router.

Hi, I am living in Southeast Asia. Do you guys know where I can buy 9-cell battery for Asus W7J? I would like to buy online since I can't get from my local computer shop.

Another question: What is the brand and type of ram used in W7J? I am thinking of upgrading W7J's ram to maximum 1.5 gb.

    Thanks in advance.

Also the w7j seems to have problems with bluetooth and it is picky with the graphics drivers if you want to get Aero working.

    Hi everyone!

Got my W7J yesterday. Everything worked great, installed windows, changed some settings and installed some programs. Tried it both on battery and on cord, both worked flawlessly.

Got up this morning, the computer booted fine and I surfed around and checked my email.

Shut it down, pulled the cords and put it in my notebook backpack well secured and padded.

Got to school and took out my w7j and hit the powerbutton. power-led comes on and fans start spinning, but nothing else happens. the screen is not on and the harddrive activity led isnt flashing.

i tried the on/off button for the screen and brightness, nothing happened.
changed batteries, nothing, plugged in the power-cord, nothing.

what can it be? i thought of the HD-cable comming loose, but wouldnt it boot into bios/dos anyways?

the asus-tech i called said something could have burned which too me doesnt sound very likely when it was shut off and in a backpack.

please help me out, I would really hate having to send it back waiting for a replacement. :(

the harddrive light doesnt flash at all?

ok we dont know if your screen is actaully on. but nothing is on the screen.
your hard drive doesnt get accessed so i'm assuming its not getting past post.

it could be memory related or cpu related... both of which will stall a boot.

do you hear your dvd drive getting accessed?

also when you are at the screen press ctrl+ alt + del to see if the comptuer is responsive and reboot.
