I know. So does the spec sheet for the i7 920XM. Which is why I stated that I don't know if the i7 720QM will work with 16gb in the G73Jh, but I do know the i7 920XM will, (under both Windows 7 64 bit Pro, and Linux). So the spec sheet is incorrect for the 920XM. The reason I was pointing it out, was perhaps by comparison, the spec sheet is wrong about the i7 720QM as well.

    Good Luck..

The reason I want 12GB is for virtual machines. I will be using this for work and sometimes need up to 3 VMs running simultaneously. So if the performance is hampered due to the memory controller not fully leveraging anything more than 8GB I need to know...I will call my reseller and get an answer. 8GB maybe sufficient for my purposes and if I can save 400 bucks I'm all for it...

Why don't you just try it with 8 first and then buy more if it doesn't meet your needs. You will definitely save money in that these resellers have to add in their labor costs to the price of opening up your laptop and installing the memory which is pretty easy to do yourself.

Yes I expect that is what I will end up doing. There are a number of things I could use that $ for... :) I have a call/email into the reseller so I will update when I hear from them.

There are 3 memory slots under the bottom of the G73Jh, which ARE easy to get to, but that essentially means installing upgrade SODIMMs into 2 of the 3 slots only, keeping your SODIMMs installed in pairs. So if you have a standard G73Jh 8gb config, (2gb SODIMMs in all 4 slots), your only meaningful upgrade would be to take out the 2 - 2gb SODIMMs, that are installed in memory slots 1 and 3, (the bottom two underneath the laptop), and upgrade them with 2 - 4gb SODIMMs. This would give you 12gb RAM total, and it IS easy to do it yourself.

However, if you need to install memory into all 4 slots, (in the case of wanting 16gb of RAM), then getting to the slot #2, under the keyboard is much more time consuming, and must be done much more carefully. In order to get to the slot you need to remove the battery, the HDDs, (and for safety, the RAM too), the ODD, the screws underneath the laptop, and in the HDD bay, 3 screws near the memory modules underneath, screws under the lip of the ODD bay, and under the battery, and then you need to flip it over, remove the keyboard, lcd panel (the hinge screws), all of the screws on the top panel, and finally the various cables that are attached to both the keyboard (2), and the top panel (3), which is the entire top of the laptop. You can then take the top of the laptop off, and THEN you can upgrade the memory in the top slot. You can check out the disassembly guide in this thread.

So if you know you're going to need it, and the price isn't too outrageous, you can consider having your reseller install 2 - 4gb SODIMMs for you, just make sure they install them in slots 2, (underneath the keyboard), and 4, (top slot underneath the laptop). Then if you want you can upgrade slots 1 and 3 by yourself later. (Mind you I did my RAM upgrade myself, but because I had the RAM, and I wanted 4gb in all 4 slots..)

    Good Luck..

Didn't realize there were 2 other slots on top of the mobo. It may be worth it if you are going to utilize all the ram slots and have use for all that ram.

There are only 4 memory slots. 3 underneath the laptop, and just 1 on top. The slot numbering is; slot 1 - the slot closest to the system board, in the space underneath the laptop, slot 2 - the only slot on top of the system board, slot 3 - the slot directly above slot 1, slot 4 - the slot directly above of slot 3. You can read this on page 16 of the user manual, (G73Jh_1229-b.pdf), which you can download from the Asus website G73Jh page, here.

    Good Luck..

When you get your computer, how do you check to see how much ram it is recognizing and whether or not it has the 1333 ram or the 1066 ram? Please don't answer "just open up the bios and look," because I guess my question is really how do you open up the bios TO look?

just open up the bios and look!! ;)

Press F2 key while it's booting - Your memory size and speed will show on the first page. You can also press ESC while booting and at the BIOS boot menu choose "setup".

Good luck to those who wait.

Is $800 a good price to upgrade from 8 GB to 16 GB memory? does anybody know how much the average price of the 4GB memory stick? What brand of memory is it -- ASUS, Kingston, etc? I am debating whether to get the extra 8 GB installed at reseller, or buy it now separately and install it myself, or buy it later and install it separately...any ideas, folks?

I guess you would have to find out the price to buy the RAM yourself vs the extra cost of the reseller putting it in for you. Depending on the price difference you have the choice of saving money or saving time/hassle.

Which are you most interested in ?

Not to mention the intangible insurance you get from the resellers installing the upgrades. There's a slim chance when installing you could botch the job then you are out one laptop. If they screw up and damage the laptop they would probably have to eat the cost and do it over with a new one.

    Hi,

Quick question: I will be buying an Asus G73 (either A1 or A2) here in Canada, and the vendors I've been contacting seem really out to lunch about the actual specs they would be sending me. Basically, I want to know whether all the A1s and A2s are completely standardized, in which case their not knowing shouldn't be a problem.

Perhaps they are confused by the Asus website which lists a range of options for all G73 models. However, I read somewhere else that the A1 and A2 models in particular were ALL standardized with exactly the same features respectively (unless you buy from special custom builders).

If I buy an A1 or A2, will I be getting twin 7200 rpm hard drives or is there chance I would get 5400 rpm? The screen too: is it possible that they might end up shipping me an A1 or A2 with a less than 1900x1080 screen? I am guessing both A1 and A2 have 8gb of RAM and not 6gb?

Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me out with this, I just want to make sure they do not send a lemon by accident.

    Cheers,
    Dan

The only difference between an A1 and an A2 should be the A1 will have a BDDVDRW optical drive while the A2 will just have a DVDRW optical drive. Both should come stock with 8GB RAM, two 7200RPM 500GB HDDs, and 1920x1080 display.

Any reseller or vendor should be able to give you exact specs on what you're buying. If they are confused, I personally wouldn't buy from them.

    @^#$%&$%^*#%^@$%&#^$&@$%^#$^%&$^%!!!!!!!!!

That was me being SUPER PISSED OFF!!!! Today was my day off and also hopefully the day I was supposed to get in my wonderful G73JH-A1. A perfect match... I had the whole day off to work on clearing off the bloatware and setting it all up just the way I wanted it!! I WAS HAPPY!!! UNFORTUNATELY, I found out that Computer Sonics sent the computer to me UPS ground INSTEAD of the 2 Day Air that I paid for, so now I'm not going to get it until the middle of next week!!! Well, I thought that at least the day wasn't going to be a total waste because the 2 TB external hard drive I ordered was also supposed to get in today (yes, I could have had my new external and my new BEAST in the same day while I was off to just blissfully sit and work on both of them), BUT the company I ordered my external from flubbed up my order and switched it with someone else's so I instead received a brown ladies laptop case. Needless to say, I did a return to sender and emailed them about it. Both places are not able to respond to my cries of anguish until Monday. Now, on my day off, all I get to do is sit and fume.

Life sucks for me right now and I needed to vent.
I'm no longer a sad/depressed owner but a SUPER ANGRY OWNER!!!

I would get this customized by retailer, it cost a bit lower than $800 and eliminated the chance of you screwing up. No offense. Powernotebook and xoticpc offer those.

Also I got a question on my own. Does the DVD version A2 faceplate say something like the annoying "DVD-ROM" or something on it. Because upgrading to blu-ray yourself might be cheaper.

So here I am waiting for Provantage to ship my A1 (supposedly the end of next week) and I walk into my local Fry's and see on display....an A1 for 1699.
Same exact specs and comes with the backpack and mouse. The salesman told me they custom ordered 3 for a customer but they backed out so they are for sale. Fyi for anyone in the bay area. This was the Fry's on Brokaw.
I woulda picked it up but I its about 200 more (with CA tax) than what I'm getting through provantage...although the wait has been killing me. Hopefully this will be the week.

I was lucky enough to get the one and only one that my Fry's in Chicago area had. I just stopped by on a whim since I was at the BB across the street looking at their G73. The 16 x 9 resolution was a turn off at BB. Fry's didn't show it when I searched for G73JH, so I was surprised to find it. Yea, I got stuck paying sales tax but it's mine now so I can start getting it up to spec.

I waited for a number of years, but jumped when I saw the specs on this machine. My other laptop is an HP DV8000 which I got 4 or 5 years ago at Comp USA. My only gripe was that it cannot read high capacity SD cards. At least it has Firewire so I can use my scanner. The G73 is a workhorse! I installed PS CS4 on it tonight, and was able to resample a 975 meg Photoshop file from 600 to 300 in 28 seconds flat. Made a believer out of me when I saw the ET.

That was for the A1 and placed the order on March 31st.

I checked their site today and they don't even have the A1 listed anymore. Their orders are probably backed up a ways since they were advertising the lowest price on the net.

According to my reseller (PowerNotebooks) the confusion is in the semantics of whether the i720QM supports more than 8GB. I believe I have confirmed this as well. Let me explain. What the datasheet states is that the "Max Memory Size" is 8GB. Intel® Core? i7-720QM Processor (6M Cache, 1.60 GHz) with SPEC Code(s) SLBLY The key word here being "size".

What this refers to is the size of the actual memory stick itself. So in theory if 8GB sticks existed it would be possible for the G73 to support 32GB physically. Setting aside the OS or BIOS support. So strictly speaking in terms of the CPU only in this case it appears greater than 8GB would be supporting in the G73.

Keep in mind I am no expert and I may be totally wrong here :) ymmv

So I posted earlier about ordering a A2 because I didn't think I needed the BD reader, but now I'm starting to reconsider. It would end up being about a 90 dollar price difference to change my order to an A1. In turn I would A) Likely get the computer faster B) Would have a BD reader drive.

My question is do you think this is worth the upgrade? I already have a Blu-Ray player attached to my HDTV, but am starting to buy BD movies for my collection. I don't know how many movies I would watch on my computer due to its lower battery life, but having the ability wouldn't be a bad thing. I'm also thinking about the possibility of software (games mostly) moving to being available on BD instead of DVD's and if I should just spend the extra money to get the drive now instead of doing the upgrade later myself for probably more money.

I switched my order to the A1 to get it quicker. I don't think the BD upgrade is worth it. I very rarely watch movies on a laptop. Have fun.

    I agree that that the confusion regarding the 8gb RAM Max Memory Size quoted on the i7-720QM spec sheet, is because of an assumed memory module size, and not CPU limitation. (Although I think that the key is the, "dependent on memory type", qualifier below the Max Memory Size specification). It's more clearly stated on page 11 of the Intel® Core™ i7-900 Mobile Processor Extreme Edition Series, Intel® Core™ i7-800 and i7-700 Mobile Processor Series Datasheet – Volume 1;
(direct pdf link, from this Intel webpage).

Mind you that didn't stop a bunch of us from throwing more than 8gb of RAM in these laptops...

    Good Luck..

Wow, grats djwillis! And nice to see PortableOne on the forums with the quick response. Although I got mine from Newegg with no complaints, I almost wish I would've ordered it through one of the resellers here on the forums.

i ordered from powernotebooks.com about 2 and a half weeks ago, so far the customer service has been top notch and calling them has been a pleasure. I'm guessing I'm going to get my laptop in like 10-12 days via ups ground shipping
