:) Thanks for the consideration, Forge. But... I'm broke! :( I'm doing the research now so in the next year or two (when prices of compatible CPU(s) goes down), I'll know what to buy and what's compatible.

    Forge,

Just curious, but I saw your benchmark results. Did you change out the LCD? Or are you still using the screen that came with the laptop that only supports 1366x768? If you did change it out can you point me in the right direction of where you got the LCD replacement. Having a problem locating one. I saw that you are selling your x9100, honestly I wish I saw that a couple weeks ago! I just purchased one on Ebay. I love it though and I also upgraded the HDD to a 60Gb OCZ vertex SSD, it just screams. One last question, when I tried installing the second hard drive in the second slot it was not recognized at all in windows. In the bios it was though. I tried everything I could think of. Even went to disk management in Vista but it could not see the drive. In the bios I sawthing but changing settings to Raid but that did nothing. I think it just is a bad sata port?? Just don't get it because it is seen in bios under hard drives but no where else. Oh well... any info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

    I used an external monitor.

And why does everyone keep missing my X9100? I need telepathy, dammit.

    Hey, where've you been?

Yeah, I'm selling it. I might as well go with a cooler CPU since the unlocked multipliers on the X9100 are useless to me, anyway.

I just came across this laptop and am seriously considering upgrading to one. The price is crazy cheap.

So this doesn't support quad core cpus?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ASUS-G51Vx-RX05...iewItemQQptZLaptops_Nov05?hash=item19b852e8e3

This guy on ebay selling refurbished ones says he can upgrade to a core 2 quad q9000..?

Btw my XPS M1530 has a T8300 2.4GHz @ 800Mhz FSB and gets 5.4 in WEI. Even though the P7350 is 2.0Ghz it has a 1066Mhz FSB so I thought that it'd be faster? It has only 5.0 in the WEI though.

Also, just a random question but which would perform better? This G51 or the HP dv6t quad edition which has an i7-720QM CPU but a GT 230M GPU..

Yeah but they don't ship to Australia. Anyway, I'm really tossing up between the G51VX-RX05 and the G51J-A1. The differences are that the G51J-A1 has a 1080p LCD, an i7 processor, 2 x 320gb HDDs, a gaming mouse and bag and a blue lid design instead of the white one, all for about an extra $360 AUD.

I prefer the white lid design and I don't care so much about the extra HDD since I can get that myself if I need to. It's mainly the processor and the LCD that leaves me indecisive. I feel as though I should spend that bit more to get the best but then I don't know if they'd make a big difference to the overall performance and experience. Would the i7 processor be significantly noticeable for general use and gaming? From what I've read and watched, the P7350 seems sufficient enough. The 1080p LCD is nice but most games probably won't be able to run smoothly at that native resolution, meaning I'd have to lower it = blurry = don't like. Can anyone help me out? XD

happyantix, you're in Aus...did you buy your G51VX-RX05 here or from the US? (I'm assuming you have one)

    @bboy1
If you don't mind using a forwarding service, then buy.com is the way to go IMO. I am also in Australia and I plan to buy one of these laptops very soon and get it shipped to me using the service described here: http://www.priceusa.com.au/
With that method the total price is approx A$ 1076.54 at the current exchange rate.

From the link you posted, it seems prices range from approx $1130 AUD - $1200 AUD. Which although isn't a large difference from the PriceUSA price, it's still a saving :p, the thing I also like about the PriceUSA service is that it add's extra security from ordering overseas, as they can help with the handling of returns and refunds if needed.

Edit: It seems the seller on eBay of that laptop also has a website which looks interesting..

To import a G51J from the USA to AU it works out to be around AU$1875.. $ 675 AUD more than it cost me to import a G51VX-RX05

    see thread here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1309236

    I bought a G51VX-RX05 from america for $800 USD + $100 3 year extended warranty + $100 shipping & forwarding service fee. = about AUD $1100 with the 3 year warranty

Use a mail forwarding service, order the item to that address in the USA, then they forward it onto you for a small fee, i used Claudia from www.boxvoyage.com she was very friendly and helpful, she charged $12 USD + shipping charge, and has an AU bank account which makes things easier

I run all my games on max and they are nice n smooth, except for GTA4 i have to turn things down a little.. i have overclocked the CPU to 2.3ghz and undervolted both cpu and gpu to reduce temps. running stable as, loving it..

The other option is to get a G71GX-RX05 but its pretty huge (17") difference is 6gb ram, 2.5ghz cpu, 500gb hdd (5400rpm) $920 from buy.com but the total order including shipping must be under $1000 AUD to avoid import taxes...

Thanks guys for all your help. Argh I completely forgot about import taxes for anything over $1000. happyantix you said you paid $1100 AUD...is that including import tax?

I could always try and get the seller to declare the laptops value below $1000..

Isn't the tax based on the items value, not including the shipping cost?

Pherein> Yeah that seller has his own site.

    http://www.hidevolution.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=673

This laptop has a better processor than the g51vx for around $1350. Even though refurbished ones are cheaper, I'd probably want a new one especially since it's coming from overseas...but then the tax issue comes into play..

Edit: I asked hidevolution and they said they can declare a laptops value as under $1000 :D

i paid $1100 AUD including the extended warranty, the extended warranty i bought seperately, the actual laptop + shipping was just under 1000 so it avoided import taxes.

the link you posted isnt worth the extra $ in my opinion, + import taxes your looking at least a few hundered more (can buy it cheaper at bestbuy website anyway).. my refurb unit was the same as new, just didnt come in a new box thats all, but it was factory sealed by ASUS

oh and im pretty sure tax is on the item + shipping cost.. if you use priceusa they declare things at 80% because the item is technically second hand once they send it to you..

For those of you in the United States, I just want to let you know I got this laptop for $699 USD Brand New at BestBuy. Yes, Brand New, apparently the BestBuy put this on clearance and they had a few stock left and I was lucky enough to pick one up. Be on the lookout in the laptop section at BestBuy, you might find it......

I also got this laptop for $699 from Best Buy three weeks ago. Sweet deal and this laptop rocks. I found it in the Monmouth Jct (NJ) store, but I'm not sure if they still have this in stock as I haven't been back there since I got this laptop.

Yes I have read your posts. Thanks for the suggestion however I'd prefer to buy new. While yours may be as good as new, not all refurbished are the same and this is something I know from experience as well. I bought a refurbished eee pc before and the glossy lid was covered in scratches (not just one or two). One user review on buy.com for the G51vx-rx05 says not to buy it refurbished because of a problem he had resulting in a return.

Anyway, I might be able to get a new one for $1100 USD shipped with no customs tax.

Sellers on eBay quote around $70-100 USD so it's still not bad considering the final cost lol.

Forge where did you get your 2nd HDD caddy? From the Asus site? They're out of stock and all other sites I can find are out of stock. Man some are selling it for $40+ not inc shipping...just for a piece of metal. You'd think they'd include it with the laptop. Wonder if you can make one lol

Ok, it's back in stock on the Asus site but they don't ship to Australia. Why must they make obtaining a piece of metal so god damn difficult.

Regarding temperatures though, are people's GPU temps high? What about after undervolting the CPU, using a notebook cooler and maybe applying some AS5? Still high?

Mine aren't high at all, but mine's gone beyond just switching out thermal paste. And at the very least use MX-2. AS5 is going the way of the dodo.

What are shipping rates to Australia, anyway?

    Refurb warranty: 90 days
New in box warranty from Best Buy: 1 year

I also read some people had problems applying for the Windows 7 upgrade with refurbed units.

Got mine for $700 at Best Buy as well. Loving it!

Hey, for the past couple months ive been getting pretty high gpu temps that have increased over time, so i decided to apply some aftermarket silver compound. When I was finished applying it, I booted up and took a look at the temps using GPU-Z. My temp no longer stays the same while it is idling, it simply keeps increasing until the fan kicks in and takes it down and repeats that process.
Im pretty worried at this point and am not really sure how to solve the problem, as i have gone in and reapplied 3 times using less and more thermal compound. so...could anyone guide me in applying after market thermal compound or point me in the direction of a guide?

*Note* I used Dynex Silver Compound from best buy and before I applied it I wiped off all of the compound that was origninally there.

I got mine and this is just a random question, but why does it say G60Vx series in system information when this is clearly a G51vx series laptop? :S

Also, my HDD is 5.8. How do you get it to 5.9? My HDD is a Momentus 7200.3.

Asus eliminated the Direct Console overclocking preset features like how the G50vt had. Don't know what the reason behind this was but it maybe due to excessive heat build up? Anyway I just manually overclock the unit with no issues. They also eliminated the 9 Cell battery as how the previously model came with. So as far as gaming goes while in battery mode... forget it! You barely get about a hour and a half on regular usage...

Well if you are going to game with it then its best left plugged in but if you want the Extended battery then you can get the 9 cell battery and use that with this unit. The battery that comes with the G50vt will fit this unit.. Check out ebay, they have them..

For anyone considering the X9100, mine hits 3.43Ghz no problem and runs quite cool with Masscool G751 Shin-Etsu TIM (the best).

Does the G51vx have 2 audio inputs or only one? There's the mic on the left and an audio input on the right. I can't get the middle one to do anything though. Speakers and headphones work with the right one, but when I connect them to the middle one, the sound just comes out of the G51's speakers..

So you can't use it as a second audio input? One for speakers, the other for headphones for eg? Cause I've read some reviews sayin it's an audio input combo..

Can someone tell me....regarding those 2 grill/vent things at the bottom of the G51. Are those speakers? Do they not work on this model? Are they only used in the models that have that EAX HD 4.0? Any way to get them to work or is this a hardware thing that can't be helped?

And stupid. Removing it gives you a dramatic decrease in GPU temperatures.

No, I'm not talking about that big round one people mistake for a subwoofer. I'm talking about the little ones at the front edge of the laptop. One's next to the WiFi switch. I thought they were speakers but am wondering if they're only used on other models.

Out of curiosity, how much does it decrease by?

i've tried to install the webcam drivers from asus site.
also tried to uninstall all the webcam drivers and then install new ones.
thru MSN it says that another program using the webcam.
    thru SKYPE the same problem.

Using identical settings in Furmark, I would stabilize at 83C, but with the fake grill removed my fan would drop me to 78C.
