I overclocked my p7350 to 2.5ghz and at full load, it stays at 69-71 C. Is this too hot (should I turn this down)? Another question is how do you install express gate? I downloaded the lastest version from asus tech website, and installed it in win7 64bit, but when I tried to boot into express gate, it keeps on telling me that the express gate installation is incomplete. I already tried uninstallation a couple of times, but keep getting the same result. Thank you.

maybe there was a problem with the setup file that you downloaded.
try to download it again without using any "download accelerator" software.

Doesn't work here either. If you reinstall it from your Vista Notebook drivers disc it will work. You will get an error message saying you're running Windows 7 but if you go to the correct folder and run setup it will work fine.

I would say that temp is fine at full load, esp. overclocked, but I don't have experience with P-series CPUs.

This doesn't have much chance of helping since part numbers do vary across the world, but:
Try finding the module on the ASUS eStore by searching for model number, write down the part number, and then maybe you'll find back the module by part number on asusparts.eu.

Fiddle with it first. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

(Chances are it is, but no harm in giving it a spin at stock first).

Oh, and it's good to see that G51vx owners aren't a dying breed.

Yes yes we know you have hard feelings against us who have gone and left the G51 breed. If my temps were as great as yours Forge after modding I may have kept mine, However, I couldnt take my room feeling like the pit of hell after an hour of L4D. I mean my room is small, and that little thing could be my heater all winter.

Well my dorm is pretty cold all the time... Maybe it will serve a second purpose as well lol. I plan on upgrading to the T9900 asap. I don't know why they put such a weak processor in with that pimpin video card. Heat? Anyways, Forge, what all have you done for heat reduction?

Note: I bet this doesn't get close to how hot a MBP is on your lap after 10 Min of Crysis (low settings of course lol) Talking about searing ur leg hair!

Not likely. You might get one for just under $300 on eBay. It's a high end mobile CPU, therefore expensive.

You could drop to a T9800 and overclock to 3.06. That would save you a little money.

Good point, but they could have at Least put a VT-X enabled processor in it, but don't get me started on Intel and VT-X. At least AMD puts it in all their processor (Athlon/Phenom/Turion based at least)

Hey everyone. I did some research on this laptop and I realize that there is a heating issue. I am thinking of buying this laptop from amazon.com as a refurbished item. My guess is that those products that got refurbished failed because of the heating issues. Would it be safe to assume that buying a refurb g51 would mean the issue was fixed and care was taken to prevent future problems?

I'm not a heavy gamer and usually dont game but i like knowing i can playing whatever i want-if i want. I dont plan on buying anything extra like cpus or what have you so just stock will do it for me. I'm on a budget so I figure this might be the one for me..

    Thanks for the advice.

I got my G51 refurbished from Tiger Direct. My seems to work fine, no scratches or anything. I read that a couple other people who got theirs refurbished though, either came scratched or with a bad screen.

What the crap. Can someone help me. I reapplied thermal paste, and now my fan won't come on until my GPU is at 90 C. So at 90 C it comes on Full blast and quickly shoots the GPU to 70 and then turns completely off (Low & Quiet mode?) and then my GPU climbs back up and repeats the process

Ah, fixed my problem. lol What has everyone else gotten as a stable OC on the P7350? I'm cruising 2.5Ghz with 70C max but only when using prime95. I'm wondering how more abuse the ram can take? Its at 1000 now  ! Interesting enough, when I use setfsb to go to 2.5 my computer resets but it comes back on at 2.5 and stable. I wish there was a better way to OC, like through bios. Is anyone looking at doing a bios mod? Is it even possible?

What are stock clocks for the asus gtx 260m? Bc mine came set at 540/1350/800, or thats what rivatuner says (GPU-Z says 500/1250/800. Its a refurb so i'm wondering if someone flashed it...

    Here's my 3dmark

Thats normal. That is what the BIOS is set to do. However sometimes if paste is to much then it will shoot temp down quickly and climb back up quicly, if too little it wont cool it off. Atleast that is what I have found out in my pasting. And it depends on paste you used. IF AS5 it must "cook" for a period of time before it works properly. AS with MX3 and ICD7 there is no cook time. I wouldnt worry to much if your fan is cooling it back off. Not much else you can do but drill and copper block it up. Helped mine out alot. Max temp went from 91 in games to 85. And that is oc of 600/1000/1550. So if your an extremist just do what forge, i, and many others did to make it run cooler. Also if your really worried you can always flash the voltage bios and take it down to .9 instead of the stock of .95. Ofcourse you will have a performance drop.

1000 is probably enough on the ram I would suggest going no further. And so far no bios related overclocking has been achieved. Stock is what GPU-Z states. Rivatuner is probably reading incorrectly.

How do you overclock the ram? What kinda of performance would the ram increase? Also my P7350 is stable up to 2.58 or 594 on SetFsb. Any higher and it stops.

If you're using SetFSB, then you're OCing the Ram. Ram is approx. 1033 with a 2.58 OC. just take your CPU speed, divide by 7.5 and multiply by 3. (EG. 2000/7.5 = 266. 266*3 = 798. So 800 stock.)

Does anyone ever get random reboots while gaming? No BSOD, just a reboot? I thought it was related to my OC, but I don't think it is now.

Also, why do you say I'll lose performance by dropping to .9V? I did that, and I'm very satisfied with the results: 10C drop in temps. The only performance loss per say, is the inability to OC past stock clocks.

I say you loose performance because you cant OC. Not necessarily loose performance staying stock on the GPU. Thats all I meant. As with all things, if your satisfied that is all that matters. If you are happy with your results, wonderful. Some people like to OC everytime on every game no matter what. Some people just like cooler running laptops. I am a cooler man myself. I dont care to much for eye-candy. Great score on 3dmark06 BTW and windows index score also is good. Congrats

Oh ok, i gotcha. Thanks! I may eventually reflash to .95 and crank it up, but that depends on how well my copper blocks work. I ordered them a week ago and haven't got them yet :(

Just curious, what speed is your i7 running at? And isn't mobility 5870 > desktop 4850? I ask because my Phenom II X4 @ 3.4 + 4850 (790/1150) scored around 16000 in 3dmark, and i figured the i7 coupled with the 5870 would kill it regardless of mobility.

    guys!!!!

i really need help here, i think im in serious trouble now ><

today i was trying to replace the thermal compound with antec mx-2 thermal compound, after i applied them to cpu and gpu, i put everything back into place, now here comes the problem....

my fan's plug like...broken?? i really dont know how to describe this but its like when i plug in all the way down like what it suppose to be, fan is not running AT ALL. However, if....if i plug it half way down...like literally half way, my fan IS running BUT....running at FULL SPEED!!! Did I accidentally hit something (what could i possibly hit when unplugging the fan plug....-.-)? (yes i was careful and gentle)

my gpu is like running at 37C ~ 45C....hahah......=.=....speechless.....-.-

The fan is actually quite loud, im actually hearing my fan running really hard while typing ><, can anyone please please help me!?

    just bought G51VX-RX05

any help and suggestion will be greatly appreciated !!

@ Ibanezbass, I not sure how great a phenom processor is, However because of your clocks on it being 3.4 I would say your CPU is what is seperating us 2500 points, more than the GPU. However, even though my class card is higher as you stated it is mobility, meaning less power. Your GPU for desktop is getting more power than my laptop GPU. Your probably getting 500 more point for first GPU test 500 points for 2nd GPU test and the other 1500 are coming from your CPU.
My CPU is clocked at 1.6 turbo mode 2.8. So my clock is not near yours, and again this is laptop i7, lesss power, less performance. The 5870 really isnt a whole lot different from the 4870 on laptops. It just slightly better, but it supports dx 11 so that makes it higher end.

    @aoc5577
Well supposing you broke the warranty sticker, I would say worst buy,or wherever you bought the laptop from will not do anything for you. That is your best bet unless you can figure out a way to fix it as it is probably a connection that is loose on your motherboard. Your best bet would be to try and RMA it. And not tell them you opened it up and say it just started doing that on its own. Or deal with noise and be happy your lappy runs cooler than any other G51 out there. Just RMA it my friend, maybe they will overlook your pasting and breaking warranty sticker

    @aoc5577

The fan will stay OFF when you start the computer. Run your GPU up to 90C and it should come on to cool it off. My fan stays off most the time when i'm idle. Just see if it comes on at high temps. If not... you could wire it to a 5v positive...... of course it will run full speed all the time.

yeah RMA is definitely one of my options AND fortunately the warranty sticker is perfectly fine ^^, yeah....i was very very careful with the sticker xD (bought it at tigerdirect for $779.97 CAD.)

    @ibanezbass

thx for the suggestion m8, I'll definitely try that when I get home. Hope this will work so that i dont need to RMA it ><, i just cant wait another 2 weeks for shipping ><.

    woot!!!

thanks ibanezbass for the great help :), my fan auto runs around 75C xD.

    BTW

got a question about gaming on this G51, I play NFS shift with this laptop. And...I believe (or I thought) gtx 260 can handle NSF shift pretty well right guys >< ? But hmm, today I played with a bit of lagging ><.

So...i was wondering is this the gpu problem or maybe cpu?? I was leaning toward maybe its cuz p7350 is kinda slow for NFS shift?

    thanks in advance :)

and guyss!!!, i've discovered something that will "maybe" lower the temp of gtx 260 xD

    Pic: http://img245.imageshack.us/i/g51vx.jpg/

as you guys can see, im kinda stressing the cpu by very little amount (explain later). My cpu temps hang around 52C~53C and my gpu is 51C~53C, these temps = while im working and surfing the web.

My cpu temps 56C~59C and gpu temps 79C~83C = while gaming (NFS shift).

muhahahaa :D, now i'll explain how i got these temps xD :

the reason i stress my cpu is because i realize that by stressing even the smallest amount, that fan will start running despite the temp of the laptop. Usually for G51VX-RX05 users, fan will only start kicking in roughly around 80C~90C. But, by stressing the cpu, allowing the fan to run from the start, cpu and gpu will stay cool every minute and every second.

However, this is just my discovery because I dont know if there is any side effect of "constantly" stressing cpu?? hmm, is there guys ??

what i mean is....is my "method" possible??

EDIT: another problem i just found is that cpu usage is constantly at 50%~55%, hmm dont know if thats good for a laptop or no ><. Well, considering the temp after i shut it down, cpu temps went down to 45C~46C and gpu 67C~70C......blah ><

    comments comments comments!!! thanks :)

between 79 and 85C while gaming normally. It might peek at 90 but the fan jumps it back down quickly. Furmark will run into the 90s especially if it starts hot.

I have also noticed this. My gpu will go to mid 40s when I'm ripping DVDs. My newest idea is to wire up the fan to a 5v positive, or cut the sensor on it, to force it to run full speed. But it will be loud if I do.

but hmm i was wondering that does constantly stressing the cpu forcing the fan to run harm my laptop in any way ?? cuz my cpu is always working at 50%~55% (taskmgr) when im stressing them.

I don't think it will harm it... it will always run hotter of course, and heat degrades components over time. The biggest thing is, you're losing a lot of processing power by doing that. its like take 2 or 3 cylinders of a 4 cylinder engine. It's already a weak engine, but now its really limping(if it even runs lol). But you get the point.

I suggest undervolting/underclocking the idle GTX 260m clocks. I'm averaging low to mid forties on the GPU with a CPU undervolt.
