Hey guys, just took Crysis out for a spin on Very High settings at native resolution and everything runs like a beauty. (OCed to sig of course)

CPU temps maxed out at 68C and GPU at 94C but GPU wise is stayed around 91-92C most of the time. Decent temps, I'd say.

    This one.

As you see it's not a fantastic cooler, but it does a tolerable job of lowering temperatures, it's small, and, hey, it's cheap.

That being said, I'm upgrading to a Zalman NC2000 aluminum cooler. Depending on the relative portability of the Zalman, I'll either keep the Targus if the Zalman is too bulky for my notebook satchel or give it to a friend if the Zalman is portable.

ok thnx, but isn´t it too noisy?? I´ve been reading some BB reviews and people find it kind of cheap. Well I don´t plan on spending much on a cooler, I just want one that gets the job done, but not noisy enough.

oh i almost forgot, how upgradeable is the ram and procesor of the g51vx-rx05? 8gb ram and c2d 2.8 / quad 2.4 maybe? i dunno, plz help me :(

    thanks!!! :D :D

I've you've been on the forums for a month or so--or ahve read older topics--you'll know my long, sad story.

To spare you that, I'll just tell you that quads do not work in the Best Buy G51s. My (sold) QX9300 will attest to that.

However, all Socket-P Core 2 Duos work just fine, including the best mobile C2D we currently have, the X9100. My X9100 bumps up the heat, I suppose, not nothing too bad. I haven't touched RAM, but RAM is easy to access.

As a side note on cooling, about half an hour of Bionic Commando (intro movie and first mission) at native res with a standard-clocked GPU got me to 95 for the GPU and 72/69 for the X9100. This was on top of the Targus cooler. I was also getting 80+ fps in the game, so I can probably have it at the Asus-standard underclocks and still have excellent gameplay.

Didn't check the FPS but I played from the beginning and spent a little bit more than an hour on it.

It's hurt to know Quad not support on BB version, I still hope somehow new bios would fix it.

    Hi peoples,
I've been reading this posting since the beginning trying to wrestle with my ability of indecision lol.
    I currently (unfortunately) use a Dell XPS 1530 15.4" w/ a Core2 Duo 2.2ghz 4gb RAM and nvidia geforce 8600M GT Resoultion 1680 x 1050
I would really really love to buy a G51vx but i was wondering is it worth it and how much of an improvement would i see? i like the way the BB looks and the new GTX 260M.........but the BB version only has a resolution of 1366 x 768
am i going to be horribly disappointed by going from a high res to a lower res? the BB display model resolution has a sorta faded look on the screen but then again they dont have any games on it to try out lol........also is the RAM upgradeable? can i have 6gb on it? and for the heat factor would it be noticeably higher than what i already experience w/ my XPS? my xps gets pretty hot -_- i normally just play WoW on the xps but i'd like to have a laptop that plays all my other games too (Crysis, FEAR2, Farcry2, and the upcoming Wolfenstein)
Could really use some help in deciding what to do since my indecision seems to have taken over LOL ty all

We have a quad supported BIOS available but the problem is the motherboard revision so no, it will most likely be impossible to throw a quad in.

Ok, got it all clear Forge, thnks! I think that for the time the x9100 would just fit in, no need for quadcores right on.

One more thing: is the notebook cooler essential? Is this notebook always runing hot all the time?

    Thanks.

Hi, wasn't to sure where to post this, but as it is about the Asus G51VX-RX05 I figured here would be a good start, not a spec question, i just need to know if there are any stockists of this particular machine in england, or if any online shopes will ship to england, i seem to have been on numerous sites and can't either find this notebook or one that will ship to england, any help on this matter would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Scrap that... found a thread on this very site lol, im good at browsing...

    Peace

The 260m was originally known as the 170m.

    Dude, patience.

Anyway, it doens't run hot all the time. Of course not. Only when you hit something intense--i.e. Crysis-level games--does your GPU get hot.

As for coolers, they're not essential in the sense that a notebook will blow up if you don't have one. But if you want to get as much longevity out of it, invest in a cooler. Besides, when you get your next laptop, you can use the cooler on the new one.

More than likely not. I don't mind lower resolutions, since I can run at the best (native) resolution, and not get tiny icons or lower game performance.

Buy I'm not everyone. Some people, because of work they do, prefer larger screens with more space. If you primarily game on this machine, the lower res won't be a hindrance at all.

[quote[the BB display model resolution has a sorta faded look on the screen but then again they dont have any games on it to try out lol........also is the RAM upgradeable? can i have 6gb on it?[/quote]
I don't know much about RAM upgrading, but the Asus G51 can max out at 8GBs of RAM. I haven't seen any 3GB sticks anywhere, though.

As a happy G51 user I say yes, buy it.

Concerning the temps, could you give us some of your temperatures for hte XPS? I'm not familiar with those Dell models.

    So it idles at 78-80C?

If that is the case, what are the CPU temps? Either way, that is way too high.

yea..video card idles at high 70's C up to 80C. This is on perfectly flat glass counters. Cpu and HDD both idles around 36C which is a very comfortable range. So it's just the video card. It does seem quite high just for idling. I have not really stress tested it yet...

Right now, mine is idling at 51C and when I boot up my laptop from cold, it starts off idling like 45-46C

oh no way..i have NEVER seen my G51 idle at anything below 64C. This is just browsing or doing word 2007 on power saver mode. This reminds me... my G51 is normally pretty quiet, but for some reason the fan kicks in high even idling on power saver mode. I suppose its because of the high video card temperature. Quite strange. Once again my room temperature is around 78F or lower, actually more toward 74F, and video card is high 70C...

    strnage..

Well....I would go get it checked out at Best Buy or something (you got the BB model right I assume) because that sounds like maybe a bad or poorly placed thermal pad since everything else seems to be normal.

When I play prototype at native rez with everything maxed out, I barely manage to hit 80C.....

Wow....that is quite unlucky....just make sure of the temps, get GPU-Z and check to see that it is displaying the same temps as HWMonitor.

If it is, well.....I guess it should be probably another trip to Best Buy for you.....

There shouldn't be a fee. I assume that you like this laptop and want to keep it. So when you have a clearly defective item and want an exchange, there shouldn't be money out of pocket for you.

That would probably be true, the no fee version that is, if Geek Squad actually finds the problem out themselves. They will probably spout some nonsense about how HWMonitor or GPU-Z isn't an approved application to look at temperature and then either never manage to get the temps or do see that there is a problem and then offer to fix it in about a couple of weeks....

If howard could return it without a fee it would be much less of a hassle other than having to redo any optimization that he may have done when he first got the G51.

Yea..I really appreciate all your feedback, this is the best forum I have been t yet. I will update you guys on what's going on. I just left it on idle again doing absolutely nothing, ram usage was 1.2 gb out of 4, cpu usage was about 0 to 1%. It idled at 65C according to HW monitor. CPU was 35C approximately. This is quite warm and my room was very cool.

My DESKTOP's GTX 260, at height of Call of duty 5 urban battle with 50 multiplayer after 30 mins playing it tops out at 76C and that's on air cooling and this thing idles between 65 to 80C is quite puzzling.

As for Geek Squad...they just have a black tie lol..whos to say they know more than we do :p but I will surely keep you posted!

Yeah, idling at 78c is high, and 51c seems low (before you have your cooler turned on?) I, like howard, idle around mid 60s. but we have to remember part of it is just that each laptop will be a bit different.

I played all the way through crysis on Very High (no AA) and got about 13 fps only (but very playable throughout); the only stutters or hiccups were towards the final quarter of the game in a few big firefights, it would pause for a few seconds. Annoying... but again, I cant with my own eyes spot any difference from very high-high settings except the shadow quality lol.

Does anyone have any pics of this with the lights on the side of the screen?

Would like to see what they look like, or if they would be too distracting in the dark. Can you turn off the side lights?

not distracting at all, they are white light, but subtle. Can not turn them off, at least no shortcut to, but if u disc the power core, 2 side light is off until u plug it back in

If you are looking at the laptop screen, you can't see any of the lights on the lid so there is no distraction at all.

You can't turn off the side lights ATM but I believe Clutch is trying to write a program that lets you do it.

Just went to return my second G51 at bestuy due to idling temperature at 85C and wireless started to drop off again. I had to change the channel often to keep it from being dropped. At the counter, BB supervisor advised me they are getting a good amount of returns for asus laptops, including but not limited to G51's due to minor defects. He even mentioned it was higher rate than Dell and other brand's return rate. Will stay low for a while and see.

I'm guess I'm just lucky, then. Even with an X9100 I'm not feeling unsafe heat.

But higher turnover than Dells, do you say? That seems... odd.

Is it just at your store location, or Best Buy for a certain region? The store might have gotten a bad batch.

I know when I returned my G17 at BB the guy there commented that they'd had a few G17s and G15s returned. The GeekSquad guy felt like a lot of the issues were related to the video card being seated and cooled improperly, but who knows if he actually knew anything.

On a side note, I've been monitoring my temps everyday all the time, idle and in High performance and when I first got the laptop I was running without a laptop cooler at a idle of 50 - 59 and High Stress at 80 - 90 (average 88) . Then I received my NC2000 and my Idle stayed at 50 - 55 but high stress went to 75 - 85 (average 80). Now, about two weeks of using the system on the cooler and a month of owning it my Idle temps are consistently between 38 - 46 and my High's are 70 - 76 (average 70). All of these temps are overclocked to 2.30 and 550/900/1400

Thinking of getting this. How much of a pain was it to swap out the stock processor?

and how the Tº lowered by a month? shouldn´t they stay the same , assuming you were always using the coolerpad.

    Should be relatively easy.

Are those temps with the exact same game playing? The GPU run noticeably cooler with certain games like Prototype even though that game is very new.

No, with newer games. I am confused as well, it makes little sense. And Ive only owned the cooler for about 2 weeks and the computer for a month. But I dont really top 75 anymore at all, with Arma 2, Street Fighter, Crysis ect

I used my NC2000 today while stress testing my G51VX-X1A, and to be honest I saw results pretty much like what you were seeing before the dramatic drop. It made a difference of maybe 2c while stressing.
