Ok I have been looking at this Asus G51vx-rx05 and the Gateway P-7805u. I like the 260m GTX but is it really any better than 9800m GTS at all? And the CPU is a 2.26 in the Gateway which is also better. Also i dont really care much about screen size so 17 inch vs 15.6 inch really doesn't matter. Its been killing me to decide which to get both are gorgeous laptops HELP PLEASE!!!!

    1) CPU is upgradeable so not much con for asus besides 2.0 ghz and 2.26 ghz...no difference, you can OC asus to 2.25 ghz easy.

    2) GPU is NOT upgradeable, 9800M has 64 processor, GTX 260 has 112 stream processor, thats something you will never be able to upgrade or change.

    Asus wins hands down.

Hey I love the guide but I seem to be having a problem, I tried undervolting but it doesn't show up in CPU-Z..... it just says 1.000V when I have it set at 1.113V

CPUs are given a certain amount of voltage to run. Problem is, most processors don't need all the power to run properly, and the excess is wasted as heat.

When you undervolt, you--optimally--give your CPU just the right amount of power, which reduces heat and lowers general power consumption.

What drivers would need updating for optimal performance and where can i get the bios update for this model Asus G51vx-rx05. I just have heard there supposed to be a bios update for the one from best buy.

I might be wrong but power 4 gears already did the job isn't it? I coundn't see any different when I set undervoltage my temp still the same as before.

PS. When I brought G51 from BB I got bios version 202 but on web has update to version 203. When I updated to version 203 my temp got higher than before normally my cpu idle@29-31c after update to 203 my temp was gone up to 32-34c so I decided to downgrade back to version 202 then my temp back to normal!!!

CPU-Z 1.52 doesn't work properly right now, at least for the G51. You should use 1.51

haha, definitely...but the outlets are usually in the back of classes and lecture halls, and I always sit in the back anyway...plus the battery on my hp is practically dead and lasts about 5 minutes...the battery for the first year was alright, but yeah, now I cant go anywhere without the ac adapter.

Whoa...in your case, the G51's 2 hours battery is like a god send for you lol....

Ihave both the G51 and the new 13 inches macbook pro which last 7 hrs so they claim, but i have no doubt on at least 5-6 hours with screen dimmed. I like windows and gaming but I also like the metal finish and lightness of the mbp, still debating which one to open and keep lol. And they are drastically different too.

    This is certainly surprising.

I've been trying to get some data regarding the G51 GPU temperatures so I've been playing some games recently with GPU-Z logging my temps in the background.

When I was playing Mass Effect, the temperatures got to a max of about 88-90C which is to be expected but I just installed Prototype and played it for about 2 hours and I get a maximum temperature of 80C.

Its done at 1366x768 with all the settings on high. Both GPU-Z and HWMonitor confirmed each other and the air exhaust on the left hand side was noticeably cooler than when I was playing Fallout 3 or Mass Effect.

This certainly is quite weird considering how Prototype, a really new game, should be as demanding or even more demanding than those two games. Furthermore, I haven't gotten any slowdown issues like lots of people have encountered with the game and everything is running perfectly....

I'm not Hiro Nakamura. I'm not Japanese (Though I am Asian). But, I just have to say:

    YATTA!

    YATTA!

(CPU-Z seems to have crapped out on me, but in the second picture I'm undervolted to 1.300 volts. Trials were done on top of a deactivated plastic cooler)

Enough. I haven't tested out games yet. Probably do that in a bit.

At my highest CPU/GPU overclock I hit about 11000 in 3DMark. With my CPU undervolted/overclocked to a nice stable 1.3 V and 3.21 GHz, and with my GPU at slighly higher settings I almost hit 13,000.

With my CPU at stock voltage and ramped up to about 3.35 GHz I blew past 13,500. No screenshots of that, unfortunately, but the GPU hit 98 at its peak, right after the firefly forest test.

    I'm not sure about mine.

With full voltage, I overclocked the CPU to about 3.5 GHz, and the GPU to 605/1510/990.

    I hit 13,339 Marks. I think that's all I'll be getting.

No contest, the G51, if you ask me...Worth it for the GTX 260m, and the processor is comparable. Lower clock speed, but more L2 cache, plus a back-lit keyboard and if you ask me, a much nicer case design.

Sandro, both are solid performing gaming machines, but the G51 will give you better FPS in most games. It all depends on what your individual needs are.

Does anyone know if a newer Gateway FX edition laptop will be coming out. A friend wants it and I cant find anywhere to order online. Best Buy doesn't have one in my area not anywhere in a 200 mile radius so... But i got on Gateway site and you cant even order one off of it. So i was just wondering if anyone knew if another was being made.

Definitely. If it turns out I can't use a QX9300 on this laptop, the X9100 is perfect.

If I can somehow get my QX9300 to work... well, I'll PM you.

Is this directed at me? I only hit those temperatures at extreme overclocks and running a 3DMark trial. In Crysis (Where I undervolted/overclocked the CPU and overclocked the GPU about 2.5% over standard 260m clocks) I might have hit 90C.

Two questions (and sorry if this was previously answered, but I'm at work and the boss is already giving me the evil eye):

    1. What are the average temperatures you WoW players are getting after extended periods of time, and no adjusting i.e. no underclocking/overclocking.

    2. I've never bought a Best Buy protection plan. In your opinions, are they worth it? I'd rather spend the money and get accessories. What kind of warranty does this laptop come with?

I'm going to be picking one up after work today, so thanks for your help.

I don't think there are any WoW players with a G51 who've been posting their temps so sorry....

The Best Buy protection plan is very sketchy....but I suppose its better than nothing. The laptop comes with a 1 year manufacturer's warranty.

I just purchased my wife the a G51VX-RX05. Once I load it with WoW, I will give you some temperature info. I would not expect WoW to stress the graphics system too hard, as it is still just Directx 9 system.

Well, lots of computer-crushing games are DX9, too. Take Crysis, for example. It runs somewhat better on DX9 than DX10, but still a huge strain on any system.

An 8800GT can run WoW (512MB RAM) on almost all high, a friend tells me.

mmk. i assumed your 3DMark was closely synonymous with your Crysis/ high end gaming temps, as it is such the case with mine. But then again, I'm not running a high end CPU. stupid comment disregard.

i checked to see how WoW ran on this back when I first got it since I used to have to play WoW on all the lowest settings and eventually quit due to wotlk being nearly impossible for me to play. i was able to put everything on max, though you get a lot more fps with the dynamic shadows turned off. i don't exactly recall the temperatures while i tried WoW out for 45 minutes or so. but i would say it would reach around 80c max? i uninstalled it and everything because i was... yeah, done with that game. temps during wow shouldn't be a problem.

    Question

My G51 kept dropping wireless connection, even after I updated the latest intel pro wireless WIFI 5100 driver. Then When I move the G51 around while computer is on, There is this buzzing noise coming from the hard drive. Not scratching or anything, just like a mosquito buzzing beside your ear kinda noise.

    Normal? Bad Sign?
