How is it that MOST people want silver when they have trouble keeping the Black one in stock...

I think we will see a silver version if asus ever releases the rumored A1 version. The X versions been black, so i would expect the A to be silver. I still think Black looks great, just more mantaince into cleaning... still i prefer it over a silver mac style, but all these are personal preferences.

well they never planned on a ul30 vt model to begin with, so they clearly didn't know how many people wanted it. they'll get things moving soon. it's all happened so fast, they just released it this month.

Haven't heard back from the owners of the 85whr batteries yet.. any updates.

Also anyone play Bioshock or Fallout.. I'm assuming their running without a hitch.

Are Fry's or Best Buys or any local stores carrying these.. Ive looked a little with no luck.

If anyone's unhappy and wanna dump there's drop me a PM... if in perfect condition still I'd be willing to go the full $800.

Amazon is the only retailer for now. Not sure if it will be changing, I wouldn't expect it to for a month at least if it will.

Also anyone can confirm on the zeroshock sleeve? And know a Canadian retailer? I've googled abit but found nothing.

    Thanks.

Yeah, I have to say I'm disappointed that they chose the X1 instead of the A1 to release. I think the people who were waiting for the UL30VT were likely to prefer the A1. Now it's a matter of waiting til the A1 is announced, and by then, hoping nothing better is announced as well.

@mvd88 , this is my original post from a few days ago about the Zeroshock III case.

The Zeroshock III is a good case and provides an excellent fit. It's durable and portable and you don't have to worry about the zippers scratching the laptop from the inside because it has a protective cover lining the inside border of the case. I actually had it on a table and had a clumsy friend of mine knock over a cup of soda, which leaked over to the case. I picked it up and wiped it off immediately, and none of the soda seeped through the outside shell of the case. It's pretty water/fluid resistant, whereas a neoprene case would've probably absorbed the soda like a sponge or piece of cloth.

As for shipping to Canada, I'm not sure how I can help you there. There is a merchant selling it on E-bay for about $26 plus shipping the last time I checked, which is pretty much the same price I payed for through Amazon. I'd take a look to see if he ships to Canada. Good luck!

did we ever figure out why switching from nvidia graphics to intel graphics after sleeping sometimes breaks and how to fix it when it does break?

also, what tools are available to accurately measure clock speed?

Not every one likes silver. It's all a personal preference. I like X1 better than A1 because black looks better than silver.

Honestly, the color is less important to me. After advertising the battery life so much of the 5600mAh battery, it was kind of a shocker that they suddenly release the version with the smaller battery and shorter warranty. I personally prefer the silver color, but if this black one had had the battery and warranty I would have picked it up straight away.

Yup, I agree. I mean, a huge computer manufacturer like Asus, who's been around for who knows how long, doesn't know what they're doing. You know, besides all of the other products that they produce, market and ship around the entire world. What the heck would those guys know about what consumers want? Those damn guys know jack about what people like you want. I mean heck, how much engineering effort does it seriously take to design a laptop? And then actually testing it, manufacturing it, along with shipping it to retailers around the world? All of that crap should only take a few days, right? Not to mention that they should just pump out fifty million silver ul30vt's (which is what most people want) so everyone can be satisfied. Get your crap together Asus. Supply and demand, come on!

What does everyone do regarding the optical drive? I have an external drive in my house somewhere and I already put most of my stuff on an ex hard drive or zip drive such as movies and all that, but what about when you're burning movies. Anyone have trouble doing this with the usb to external optical drive? I've never really used my old ex optical drive much in the past so I was just wondering.

I knew it was sarcasm! Haha well said nonetheless. I don't think that ASUS expected this laptop to take off like it did and now they are trying their best to meet demand. Also, you have to give them credit because not a lot of companies actually have a rep who is part of the community. The asus man on amazon answers questions and concerns and I think a company that has someone like that is awesome.

Supply will catch up for sure, I'm sure they're pumping the VTs out, look at the nintendo wii, they've only just succeeded in meeting demand, and they didn't think their console was going to take off as well as it did.

hahahahaha...i bet you're some lil punk. I'm simply expressing my impatience. So if you'd like to a jerk online while u hide away at home typing on ur computer then do so. But say that to my face and thats another story.

Btw how much extra testing and designing would they need to do on a simple colour change on a laptop??? If they pumped out the black model there is no reason why they cant pump out the silver. Moron

you realize the wii is now tanking as if its just a fad. They missed out on selling a huge volumes of consoles and now that they finally have supply they are tanking because its too lil too late. I have a feeling by the time asus releases the laptop most people here want, the other companies will have answers and asus will loose out like Nintendo.

You do realize your article is from Feb. 2009, and the Kotaku link is from Dec. 2009?

And while you can look at Nintendo's sales month to month, in the scheme of things, Nintendo is still doing well.

Heat + fan noise are non-issues.

In a year, I'm sure this laptop will come with an SSD and be built with some aluminum / magnesium alloy ;-)

i'm just a neutral 3rd party, but you kind of did start it by raising the idiotic points about asus in the angry, cringe-worthy way that you did. you managed to bash undeservedly on the company we're all buying a product from while, in the same breath, completely misunderstanding supply and demand and why companies release things (especially technology) in the slow, layered way that they do.

then, on top of it, you go attack someone pointing out you're wrong?

anyway, this isn't adding anything to the discussion.

probably time to drop it. :)

Nah, I'm not some random little punk kid on the internet, and nor do I care about responding to your little threat because you think you're a wise guy. I have an electrical engineering degree, focus in computers, so I understand how things are done from concept to production. I've also been around cpu fabrication labs and blah blah blah. My point being is that you can't just whip together a laptop in a few days and produce it for the masses as if it's no big task. A company as big as Asus, actually communicating with consumers and managing to push out a few batches of UL30VT's for us enthusiasts (or whatever) is something we should all appreciate. Unfortunately, you could care less and instead, choose to come here and complain about them not releasing a silver version. Black was probably due to numerous reasons that you and I will never know (previous sales in the US, pricing, most profit before end of the year, manufacturing costs, etc), but for you to come here and bash on them, acting as if you could run the company better than those guys could, come on now

You can go ahead and keep coming off as a tough guy on the forums but it'll really get you nowhere. To anyone reading wondering why this thread got off topic, my apologies for responding to his original post bashing on Asus and letting this thread get off topic for a few pages.

Btw, no noises from the fan. HDD is louder than the fan

Because it's part of the U series, not the UL. Even the Asus rep said that when I was on the phone to get a new keyboard replacement. Also one less factor in power consumption to help improve battery life.

don't forget, if they did put a SSD, you wouldn't want to pay the price for it. SSDs aren't widespread yet, that means that, most people don't understand the technology yet. So manufacturers would want to charge premium for the option. also LED backlight? just a waste of battery power. if they include it, the advertise battery life would need to be lower and it wouldn't be as attractive

btw anyone want some high quality shots of the laptop?

It only come with 2g ddr3 though so get ready to buy another 2g.

I also saw a lot of them in most electronic market (Asus just launched a big advertising campaign in Shanghai for the UL series), silver and black.

    Hello everyone!
I have followed your discussion about the ASUS UL30vt since I found out about its existence and I have almost decided two buy one. My only remaining question is, will I be able to play Dawn of War 2 on this notebook?
I'm not intrested about playing at ultra settings I only want to have the possibility to play DoW2 at all.

    Thanks for your replies!

I am still having performance issues with the Blue Tooth mouse. I have not installed a different driver because I do not know where another driver exists for this. Honestly, I don't even believe a driver could be the issue anyway unless the driver is currently using has the signal strength turned all the way down... Which, I guess could be the case. But typically when a device does not have the right driver it defaults to higher power draw (maximum signal strength)... But it is all speculation on my part. Regardless, using a Blue Tooth mouse while gaming on this lapop is not possible.

One note - before people tell me that BT is not to be use for a mouse. I have used this BT mouse on a number of laptops while gaming and none of them exibited this type of behavior. I am almost thinking the antenna for the BT isn't installed right. Another user did mention this problem, but I have not kept up with this thread in the last week or so. Any solution?

That person is me and unfortunately, I was never able to find a solution for it. I went back to my old other wireless mouse which uses a usb dongle.

Just a random thought but I wonder if disabling the touchpad when a mouse is attached might help? Maybe playing games and having the elan app still trying to detect trackpad motion interferes with the bt connection? I remember seeing that option on the elan system tray app. I don't have a bluetooth mouse on me here at work but I can try it when I get home.
