Is there anyone else who found the touchpad browsing unsmooth and jiggling, or just me?

It's by no means as fluid as the gestures on a Macbook. However, it works ok for me and I use it when I'm on the go and can't use a regular mouse. I hate touchpads in general.

2 fingers scrolling seem acceptably smooth, but the one finger browsing is jittery and NOT smooth. Does anyone have a solution for this? It seem to me that the little dimples are the culprit.

Wanna post a ul30vt-a1 on ebay for a reasonable price? I'll buy it from you. Should work fine here in Canada right?

Does the fan come on at when web browsing etc/ low power graphics mode?
I want my laptop to be inaudable when just sitting there.

Can anyone test at what temperature the fan does turn on it? (ie place a load and watch coretemp to see at what temp the fan starts)

    THANKS!!!

so anyone find a direct download link for RTM version of Win7 home premium (not student upgrade)?

also can we use the CDkey from the bottom of the laptop to activate? or is that CDkey only for Asus' recovery cd

I hope this is a driver issue after booting into the quick OS in the Asus express gate. As the cursor is significantly more responsive there though still far from being perfect.

Not sure what the rule on posting URLs is but I helped my brother over the phone last night download a copy of Home Premium to do a clean install. He had a Win7 disc but it was 32-bit and he should have 64-bit. I'm pretty sure he used this download. Hope you are ok with torrents. As someone else said, this should be legal since you already own a license.
It lists 5 files but my brother said he only had an image file which I told him just to burn to a DVD using Nero. It worked perfect. No need to use the MS utility to create a bootable disc as this is an image of a bootable Win7 disc.

As for the key at the bottom, I am almost certain that you can use that key when doing a clean install. MS has to expect people would do clean installs on these machines and it would be ridiculous to require a separate key to do so. Hope this helps.

Theoretically it is illegal to use the key on just any windows 7 disk. The reason is the key is meant to work on Asus's modified windows 7 install disks. These disks have modifications as in the themes for one. I am not sure what else may be modified. I know we are justifying it in our minds but sorry to say I don't think in court it would hold up.

The flip side is will M$ or the OEM's do anything about it? I doubt it as no one is really loosing any money from the issue. Where there is no money to be gained why waist money and tick some customers off! Now if M$ had a specific OEM to retail upgrade path with a cost involved this would be a different story...........

Just got an e-mail from amazon.ca saying

Did anyone who preordered from amazon.ca get something saying sooner? I'm wondering if they already accounted for the batch coming in Dec. 22.

i rather have a direct download link than a torrent link

    hmm....

so anyone who downloaded the iso file from here
    http://lifehacker.com/5391688/iso-downloads-and-fixes-for-windows-7-student-download#comments

activate using the key on the sticker of your laptop?

or any suggestions to direct download links? I don't want to pay for another win7key, but i want to do this legally

I have a bizspark account so I have 10 licenses for every MS product on MSDN :D

Windows 7 in general is a much more optimized OS (if you're comparing it to something like Vista) and the performance difference is probably negligible between Home Premium and Ultimate. But for more legit reason, I need IIS and the ability to join a domain so that's why I installed Ultimate.

unless you have a msdn account, good luck finding a direct link. you're seriously better off using torrents.

I used the direct iso download links in this thread.

Then I used the guides as I mentioned back here.

All worked well for me, though I did have to call in MS's automated activation line to get things activated.

It's worth it if you have the money. For now I am waiting for more manufacturers to be on par with Intel. OCZ is definitely working on it.

For migrating, I've tried out Acronis and they're a nice. What I do is a disc copy from hard to drive. Acronis adjusts the drive space to match the space on the new drive, so you must have less content on your original drive than your new drive. Then I just swap the new drive in. It works right away and keeps the boot tables the same. But I wonder if they support SSD...

Hi abcwxyz, I received the same email last night, and I preordered the laptop at around 11 o clock on the 10th of december. Asus man on the forums on amazon.com says that we should get them around december 25, but this email is stating otherwise.

Thats crazy if they come that late

I've read the entire thing, but I have 2 questions related to amazon:

    1) Does amazon charge tax on this product (I am in California)?

    2) How do you preorder from Amazon (I don't want to buy it for $949 from Techno Intelligence)?

You can only pre-order when Amazon allows you to and I believe they charge tax in CA. I live in MA and they did not charge me tax.

I've used acronis for exactly this purpose on a desktop with a SSD drive so it should work fine. Only problem I can think of is that I had both hard drives connected at once, not sure how to do this with the UL30vt.

    Just curious...

I've heard about some new Intel mobile processors coming out in early January. Are these going to be make the UL30VT's processor an old model or are the new releases in a different class?

    Some more thoughts...

The screen looks great (sharp, bright, clear) on High Performance, but crappy on other settings and especially using Intel graphics. By default, Battery Mode turns the screen into a low contrast mess.

Gigabit works well - was surprised to be able to transfer at 30MB/s to my NAS (recently set up). This is better than real world USB 2.0 speeds IMO.

The keyboard does sag more than I'd like. I can also confirm the trackpad is finicky. The only other major negative is the weird noises the HD makes when I pick up the laptop.

Laptop runs cool! It's on my lap right now while I type on my bed.

    Hello everyone,

I'm new here and really considering a UL30VT/UL80VT.
I'm quite impressed with the battery life using the power saving mode, but what about under heavy duty. Did anyone try to measure it with 100% brightness, the dedicated g210m, wifi on,turbo33 on, running heavy gaming or benchmarks?

    Thanks!

Amazon.com only ships to US addresses - so I shipped it to a US-based relative first.

I'm a bit impatient - I planned to pull the trigger one of x200s/T400/VAIO Z before xmas. The UL30vt is a good laptop, but I'm already thinking I won't be using the discrete graphics nor the 500GB drive (I'm looking at 60GB SSDs) and want W7 pro. I'm tempted to sell it and buy a 9-cell T400 although it is bulkier and may have a worse LCD.

for those who had the UL80VT previously, is there any significant differences you guys notice between the UL80VT and the UL30VT? besides of course, the lesser battery, optical drive, and the weight.

Is there really a huge difference between the build quality?
Is there a difference in wireless performance since both have different wifi cards, which one performs better?
how do the screens compare to eachother?

i'm sort of getting impatient with Amazon and ASUS restocking the UL30VT and i don't want to pay $900+ from that Techno Intelligence company. i want this laptop asap so i might just pull the trigger on the UL80VT instead w/ the $100 gift card, but i don't want to regret it either.

I think there are a couple folks that got the UL80VT and returned it in favor of the UL30VT. I don't have both so I can't compare them in terms of build quality, but what I can say is that the UL30VT is built well. I don't have any issues with my laptop.

Anyone knows when is this laptop going to come to Europe (specifically Germany, France, Spain or Italy)?
    Asus said anything about that?

Hi everyone, just ordered my UL30VT-X1 from Amazon.ca, shipping date Jan 11-19th :(. Oh well, I am still excited.

Anyway after reading this whole thread I saw abit of discussion about sleeves but no one who explicitly said they own the laptop and also own a perfectly fitting sleeve, and which one that is. So if anyone has any recommendations, I figure the sleeve is something that can go under the tree in place of the laptop. Really craving a SSD too but I think that will need to wait :). Thanks in advance.

I'm getting really impatient. I don't understand why asus couldn't release their silver version (which is what most people want) already and also why there is such a huge lag in supply. They need to get their act straight and learn about supply and demand models.
