Just ordered my laptop. Quick question - is anyone using the ZeroShock III sleeve? How is it for the UL30VT? Not sure what size to order.

That is classy, indeed. I've been waiting for Amazon to restock! Too bad it won't get here 'til next week. Feedback on the ZeroShock III would be great - I really want a protective sleeve when toting the UL around.

Zeroshock is a excellent sleeve as i was the one to recommend it first in this thread. i've used zeroshock for my other computers and it did a great job.

I see 2 in stock as well. So it'd be safe to assume that the 13.3 ZeroShock would fit the UL30VT snugly? Thanks!

Read page 69 on this thread. You should also try a search. This thread has talked about it a lot already. And as a general rule of thumb, one should try a search first. This thread is actually a big victim of repeat posts. It keeps going on because people are really nice on these forums (at least in this thread) and just reply with answers.

Thanks for the measurements. Those match up with my findings for the laptop with the 4400mah battery which I weighed at 3.92lbs. So it looks like the 5600mah battery adds an extra .1lbs to the system weight, not too bad although I haven't even had an issue with the 6-7 hours I am typically getting with the 4400mah.

I have it and have been using it for my ul30vt for the past few days. The 13.3'' size is a great fit for it and it feels very solid and I don't have to worry about it wiggling around. The zipper compartment can fit a few low profile objects in there, but definitely not the power cord. I have a usb flash drive and slim hdd enclosure and cables, plus earbuds/headphones in there. It's a good solid case that's not too big.

Yes!! The replacement keyboard just came!

For those of you with the space bar issue, read below:

Previously in this thread, I mentioned that I had the space bar not registering problem. Pressing the space bar anywhere along the very bottom half of the space bar would not produce any blank spaces on the computer, which was annoying when you had to keep going back to press the space bar repeatedly again. So I contacted ASUS Support and told them my problem; they offered to send a new replacement keyboard (free shipping) but we have to pay for the cost of returning the old keyboard (Kind of sucks because I just received this laptop and it wasn't my fault that the original keyboard is defective). Sent in the forms on Tuesday, received the new keyboard today, Friday.

The new keyboard actually looks a lot better than the keyboard that originally came with my UL30Vt. The old keyboard has a rough/bumpy surface while the new keyboard has a smooth surface/texture (kind of like a matte finish on monitors). They didn't provide any manuals/instructions to replace it, but it wasn't too hard to figure out. It took about 5 minutes to replace the keyboard, now I'm up and running with NO SPACE BAR PROBLEM! :) Even pressing the bottom half ever so slightly, it produces a blank space.

So I suggest anyone with the space bar issue, to contact ASUS Support and have them ship you a new replacement keyboard.

Here are some pictures, sorry it's not good quality, it's from my camera phone.

Old keyboard (left), New keyboard (right)

Nice. I'm about to call Asus right now then and request a new keyboard.

[edit] Umm...what phone number did you call to talk to them?

[edit2] nm, found it. 1-888-678-3688. I'm being requested to perform a system recovery?

Ok, after telling the support guy that I already formatted and that this is a hardware problem and not software, he put me on hold, came back and told me I would get a new keyboard. I asked for backlit and was politely declined :p

Lol, Is it just you and me that have the space bar issue? Yeah , the support guy that I talked to before, told me to power down, unplug the laptop, then replug and try the space bar again...I'm like the hell?? this is clearly a hardware problem, not a software.

Apparently it is just you and me. Either that or no one here taps on the bottom part of the space bar :p

So is it completely normal now?

And one weird thing I noticed with switching graphics. Apparently I cant switch between the two when Evernote is running. I don't think the actual app has anything to do with it but rather, windows suggests for me to close Evernote in order to save battery. I believe one other person mentioned that they closed a bunch of apps and then switching graphics worked. Just wanted to confirm it.

Yeah it's normal now. I did noticed some flex in the middle of the keyboard (that is, if you press the keys with lots of force). That doesn't bother me though, I don't slam my keys everytime I type.

Yeah there are some apps that stop it from changing graphic cards even if you press the graphix boost. After you press the Graphix Boost button and if it doesn't switch graphic cards, then you should click on the nvidia icon on the bottom right, it will say "Increase Power" or "Save Battery" , it will tell you what app to close (not necessarily exit the program, just closing it from the desktop) and it will let you change it.

From Asus Rep on Amazon discussion under the UL30VT thread:

"Thank you all for your interest in this product! WOW! It did sell out, quickly -- then we sent more and they sold out. We definitely underestimated the demand. Amazon.com will not receive more units until the first week of January. However, for those in Canada, Amazon.ca will receive some (not many!) on around the 22nd of December. Pre-order will be the only way to get one on Amazon.ca in December, I know this because I know we can't supply them with enough -- pre-order and you have a chance.

Regarding other sellers, this is the Amazon Marketplace. Amazon handles the transaction for the other seller. If you see a $900 price tag, that's not Amazon's price. In this case someone has found an arbitrage opportunity."

So apparently we have to wait until the first week of January (US Amazon) for the new shipments to come in.

So far so good after a few hours usage. No spacebar problem that was mentioned by a few folks in this thread. No apparant keyboard flex. The viewing angle is as plain as I expected but I think I can live with that. The only problem so far I uncover seems to be the touchpad: the cursor feels sluggish and jiggling alot when using the touchpad which never happened in my lower ended 11.6 ACER 1410, but the external mouse works just fine. I hope this issue can be resolved through a driver update or so. The GPU swap doesn't seem to work after booting from the Express gate.

Asus has done a good job in thermal management. Both GPU and CPU are running quite cool at idle of 40ish c, and at load the GPU temp can pull up to 65c maxium. I even tried a little overclock on the GPU to 720/1700/950 and the load temp's barely risen by 1c when the 3D mark06 score hit near 4k.

Thanks for posting the information on graphix boost above. I kept having problems when i would try to turn on/off the discreet graphics and nothing would happen. I guess I have to go through and see what programs may be preventing that since I'm not getting any popups or anything (probably because I reformatted and guess I didn't install the crapware that deals with this?)

If you look at the keyboard, near the top (ESC key, F5-F6 key, F10-F11 key, and Delete key), there are little slots where you can insert a flat screwdriver to pop the keyboard out, you should try to do it gently though, to not scratch your laptop and to avoid ripping the short wires that connect the keyboard to the board. After you pop it out, there is a piece of tape that holds the connection in place, take it off. Then you see this white thin piece that sits on top of the wire connections, you can lift it up to release the wires (it opens like a car trunk). Take the wire/keyboard out and put in the new one, stick in the wire and close the thing that secures it and put the tape back on. Snap the keyboard into place and voila! You should be good to go.

You're talking about the upper-left power button? I noticed that it will not work if you're running as a standard user (including after a clean install of Win7). It work, however, it you run some app called batterylife.exe (I think...it's located in c:\program files\p4g). batterylife.exe requires admin privileges to run. I don't know if that's the source of the problem or what.

For me it's really a non-issue. I can always just click the battery icon in the systray and switch between p4g entertainment or p4g high-performance if I want the discrete enabled on battery. I mostly use entertainment anyway, since I would prefer discrete used on power and integrated on battery...both with turbo33 enabled...which is exactly what that power profile provides.

edit: Oh duh, I know what you're talking about. Yeah, same thing happens when I'm running Chrome. Graphics switch as soon as I close Chrome...perhaps Chrome and Evernote are taking advantage of some GPU functionality, which prevents the GPU from being able to be switched.

Not happy with Amazon jacking up the price of this thing to $949. That's crazy, will wait for the price to drop. Then will sell my M15X, but one of these little bad boys, and pay off my insurance deductible. Can any of you guys tell me how modern warfare 2 runs (what GFX settings for running native res at 30FPS)?

Amazon ain't jackin' up the price - they're sold out. The $949 price you're seeing is from another company. You just gotta wait - I kept checking back and bit as soon as Amazon had more in stock. These things are going fast. Modern Warfare scales well in general, so I'm guessing you can probably run it at native res on medium settings.

On another note - can someone try modding a backlit keyboard? I'm not daring enough, especially not with zero experience in modding... :p

I decided to dig a little further and this is all Windows preventing the switching. I'm hoping this is all there is to the issue and nothing more.

So I have Evernote open and now my graphics mode icon displays this pop-up when I double click on the icon:

Click on "Increased performance now..." and you get the list of processes to close. Notice the "Increased performance" button is disabled. Go ahead and close out the application, which is Evernote in my case.

After closing it, the pop-up refreshes itself and now the "Increased performance" button is enabled.

Click on it and it should switch graphics immediately :D

I was just wondering what about those programs require that they're closed to switch.

I finally have some time to reinstall the OS from scratch next week.

Why are you guys all installing win7 ultimate instead of home premium or pro? I quickly scanned the difference between the win7 versions, it seems to me ultimate has a bunch of features that I (and most people) would not normally use, and beside taking up space on the hdd, some of these things may be running in the background and slowing down the computer's boot time as well as normal operations.

    Any insights?

Can someone provide a list of essential drivers?

another update from asus man regarding pre orders on amazon.com :

    ASUS
I don't know what the pre-order queue looks like in the US or Canada, but if you pre-ordered yesterday from Amazon.com there is a good chance, from what I can tell, that it will ship tomorrow. Amazon should message you regarding expected delivery date, or you can call them.
For Europe, I don't know. I would get in touch with customer service for whatever region/country you are in and see if you can find out.

I have a ul30vt-a1. I seems to be having a a lot of flicking / refresh problem when i hook it up to a 24 inch lcd. Any body else is encountering this problem?

Updating drivers from asus doesn't help.
