A few people have gotten their 5600s now. Can anyone comment on their usage?
-
-
oh yeah... ups just dropped off my baby. i'm using this laptop to type right now. will post a little more about it later. let me burn the recovery discs (4 of them) then install my SSD and do a clean install.
btw. there's a disc that came with the laptop. the disc says it's a window7 recovery media for window 7 products. is that the win7 installation disc? -
(Un familiar podría comprarmelo allí y subirlo para reyes por eso estaría bien saberlo)
[Eng] Edu, how do you know that the battery have 5600 mAH? Im going crazy searching the webpages and i cant find that info. -
-
I'm not sure why they have us make recovery discs since they package the OS and Drivers on separate discs. Am I missing anything here?

Hi,
The x1 comes with hard disks already partitioned. Is there any way to join the d drive back c: without a full install?
Also, is an upgrade to windows 7 ultimate possible with just a product code from MSDN? -
-
Bought an Intel X25M 80GB and did a clean install... uh... this is faster? In fact, even with the latest firmware (Dec 8 2009). It feels the same and EVEN SLOWER on the UL30vt.
A directory copy (lots of small files) from my gigabit NAS was cranking away at 20-30MB/s using the stock 500GB drive, but now is limping along under 3MB/s (with old and new firmware). -
if you right click on my computer and hit "manage" and then under storage if you click "disk management" you should see your disk and it should be partitioned. By right clicking on one of them there is an option to extend volume, shrink volume, and delete volume.
You man be able to extend it and combine the two, or delete D drive and merge it with C if you wish
hope that helps! -

Benchmark-wise (via HD tune), I'm getting 200MB/s read/write and 0.1ms access times. In reality, for the extra cost, I'm getting silence and a higher WEI rating. -
i'm running the intel right now. fast as hell. i'm loving it...
how do i turn of indexing in windows 7? i dont' know much about Windows 7, but if you asked me in XP, i would know. a little help please. thanks -
I've see a couple questions relating to this earlier but just wanted to see if anything new has come to surface. Does anyone have any idea as to when the next model of this laptop will be released? Do you think 3 or more like 6 months. Also when will the price fall below $800. I'm new to Asus laptops so I don't really know how they market these things. Thanks!

I have a friend who likes to play DoW2 and it was good news to hear that I can play the game on this smal notebook though I don't plan on doing so all the time. Then I wouldn't be intresseded in this pc
I would appreciate if you had time to check what settings the game runs smooth with. But you have already almost convinced me to buy a UL30vt
I just came up with another question. The UL30vt doesn't have an optical-drive but do anyone know a good way to use the optical drive in another computer and copy the disc content from the disc via the other computer to this one and then use the content as if it where at a disc? I read a little about burning an iso-file from the disc with powerISO and then setting it up as a simulated disc with daemons tools. Unfortunately I don't have any optical drives available to test it out for myself -

English:
The OS can be changed without trouble.
The keyboard's a problem, the distribution of the Italian keyboard is different. That's why I haven't already ordered it.
¿MM is bringing it soon?¿Do you know when exactly?¿January? -
Did anyone figure out a good case / sleeve for this laptop?
Also is it confirmed the intel graphics card is pretty much in an always on state?
Thanks -
Anandtech's full ul80vt review is up:
http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3689
For those not paying attention, the ul80vt is identical internally to the ul30vt, except it has the 5600mAh battery (and the larger size + optical drive). This should give anyone a good idea how the 5600mAh battery should perform on the ul30vt as well. Page 6 has gaming benchmarks, page 7 has battery life benchmarks. -
My question is more in regards to when the next actual model will be released from asus with improvements like a less fingerprinty aluminum shell, or an improved trackpad that I've heard is less than great. Is the general consensus that they will be releasing new models relatively soon as they did with the EEE pcs?
-
a quick initial response.
if compared to the EeePC that i had couple days ago, this laptop does have a few cons that the EEE surprising have.
the mousepad i'm very used to since the gestures are about the same as the EEE. the major problem with the mousepad is that it's glossy. with oil on top, the mousepad would act up and not response nicely, your finger must be oil proof to get the thing to work 100%. The EEE didn't have that problem because the mousepad wasn't glossy.
viewing angle is also a lot worst than the EEE. I didn't think a netbook would have better screen when compared to a laptop that cost a lot more. i've already adjusted to this. Good posture and proper screen angle would get you very good viewing angle
other than that, i've installed my SSD. the intel x25-m ssd. 20 seconds from pressing power to the login screen. not bad at all. -
I would like to order one from Italy, but the keyboard is really a problem.
Does someone know, where I could get a spare keyboard with german layout from? The one in the UL20a should be the same. Are there any other compatible models? Has soneone the part number for the keyboard?
Does Asus send out such spare parts, if you ask them? Until I get a new Keyboard, I could use german keyboard stickers, but I don't want to live with them forever... -
I think the trackpad is more or less due to a driver issue in Win7 as I 'v seen the trackpad cursor much more responsive and following when I ever booted from WinPE in my USB key. The trackpad under ExpressGate seems flawless as well. -

-
The screen benchmarks aren't that promising on the UL80 :/ -
Yeah, basically the same screen. UL80vt has the 14" panel, Ul30vt has the 13". Both 1366x768, both identical in regards to everything but size.
-
Then ask for a german keyboard to fix the problem...
You will have to pay the price of the shipping i think... -
My 5600mAh battery shipped out yesterday... It will arrive tomorrow. Based on anandtech's testing, I expect to get around 10 hours of web surfing out of it.
By the way, I really love the laptop, but I feel that I must comment on the screen. Despite Anadtech stating (going off of UL80 and G1J) that the screen is no worse than other TN displays, I have to dissagree. The display on my HP DV5T is far, far, far better than my display on this UL80VT. Especially viewing angles, and of course, contrast. However, Anand's testing seems to indicate both of these are 'on par' with each other (DV5T = UL80VT), but I have to completely dissagree. I can't argue with his results, but since I own both the UL30VT and a DV5T, I have to say the DV5T has a much, much better display.
Now, does that mean this display is 'bad'? No... I don't want to give that impression. It is a 'standard' run of the mill display. Nothing special about it. The viewing angles are poor though. I tried to watch a movie laying down next to it in the hotel and I could easily see distortion of viewing angles while watching. It was 'dissapointing'. It just means I have to look at it head on a bit more.
Another flaw is the BT interference. I have read a bit about this and found that it is actually somewhat common among cheap laptop wireless cards and also poor placement of antenna... The combo cards seem to have a problem with it the most. If you are running heavy wifi + BT mouse, expect problems of lag. If you are just 'surfing' the web, it will work fine.
Another flaw is that there is not a quick button to disable wireless. However, there may be a function key that does this??? I have not looked, but I will when I get home... I don't like that it does not have a toggle switch though.
despite these somewhat major flaws, this is the BEST laptop I have ever owned. And... I have owned quite a few. Great laptop, well worth the price... Awesome build quality in my opinion... No loose hinges, etc... Great machine. Would love to see a high quality display for another $100 or so more and a better BT/Wifi card. -
To all who are interested in getting this laptop in europe as fast as possible:
http://www.marketstore.it/home.aspx?FID=13&PID=169951
This shop seems to ship abroad (to Germany for about 35€.
And I found this shop, that seems to sell keyboards for the machine: http://www.asusparts.eu/index.php?cPath=67674_142936_143010
So it would cost all in all something around 800€. Seems a bit too expensive for me. I think I will wait, until it is available here in Germany. Let's hope, they sell it here for under 700€... -
Low-19FPS
Med-12FPS
High-8FPS
Ultra-7FPS
So med and or high might be playable if you lower the resolution but low you could def play low at native.
*Also had to 2 Firefox windows open for studying and of course Steam so that could have lowered results -
From Anandtech review:
http://www.anandtech.com/mobile/showdoc.aspx?i=3689&p=14
" ... What's worse, most laptop manufacturers source LCDs from all of the major panel manufacturers (AU Optronics, Chi Mei, LG Philips, Samsung, and Seiko Epson/Sony), and it's not uncommon to have a single laptop using panels from two or three vendors. If you are truly concerned with LCD quality, you may need to shop locally or purchase a higher-end laptop (i.e. Dell Studio XPS) where they only use one LCD brand… and you can expect to pay quite a bit extra! ..."
I hope this baby comes to Europe with a better LCD ... -
To answer the always on question, I would assume it does turn off the power to the GPU if the dedicated card is being used. I assume this because Asus does a really great job of battery saving in this laptop and since they have the ability to power down the GPU chip, I would assume they would do that.

They even rank the UL80Vt as the 'high mark' for 'do-everything laptops'! Awesome.
