And about the battery, u can buy it from the reseller that u bought the laptop from example exoticPC or powernotebooks etc. This is CBB list get the part or model number of your battery and order online if u can http://www.mobileformfactors.org/ingredients/bp/

Strange request, does anybody have the modded inf for the 169.04 xp nVidia driver from laptopvideo2go.com? They went offline a few days ago and I need the inf to make a suitable driver for myself, mainly because 150 series drivers are useless for Timeshift or Gears of War. ("Your drivers are too old, yadda yadda, the game may crash" and yeah, it really does crash :|)

    Guys and gals,

Can you tell me which kind of keyboard did you get with your notebook and how are you satisfied with it?

Initially I've got a Chicony or Darfon, I can't tell it because it was replaced, but now I have this piece of #&@! Sunrex and its quality is abysmal, the worst one I ever had.

Well, if the special keys (suspend, wireless/bt, display switch, brightness, etc.) have blue color then it is a Sunrex, I believe.

The other two (Chicony, Darfon) just have simple grey special keys, I think. The easiest (?) way to tell the manufacturer is to disassemble your notebook like this (also, this is the way to replace your keyboard):

    1.) Remove the battery pack
2.) Remove three screws that are behind the pack
3.) Remove indicator cover, preferably starting on the right side, there are six billion (actually 9) latches to unlock. (Do it gently, if it doesn't want to move try it another way)
4.) Slide the keyboard up a little
5.) Lay it on the front side

There will be a white sticker like this:

And if you actually want to replace your keyboard (presuming that you did the previous steps):
1.) To unlock the ribbon cable from the connector pull the grey latch on it towards the touchpad
2.) Plug the ribbon cable of the new keyboard into the connector and secure it by pushing the grey latch towards the screen
    3.) Slide the keyboard in
4.) Put back the indicator cover (properly, be sure that you don't leave "bumps")
5.) Secure the three screws that were behind the battery pack

As for flex, it is when the keyboard acts flexible, like sinking under pressure or "bumping out".

    My pleasure.

Yeah, can't wait for them to be back. And anyway, apart from my keyboard question, another one asking everybody:

What kind of experiences do you have with the drivers available on laptopvideo2go.com, except the 150.xx series specifically for ASUS notebooks?

My experience is that only the specific drivers for the ASUS notebooks (marked simply as "ASUS" in their description) work, but only 150.xx series drivers are avaiable. The newer, "general" ones absolutely don't work with resolution stuck at 640x480x16 colors. I'm curious if anybody has the same issues, I resolved this problem with adding further tweaks. If the site goes online I will share the tweaked modded .inf I use, in case anybody needs it.

    Hello Good People,

I'm thinking of building my own notebook and I'd like to do this with the ASUS S96S barebone model. Looking at one vendors price list, I see 4 SKUs but they all state the same product description. Any idea what that would mean?
    Here is the list:

    SKU 90NK3I161604000L902Y - $536.97

    SKU 90NK3I161504500L902Y - $559.97

    SKU 90NK3I161604000L102Y - $525.97

    SKU 90NK3I161604500L102Y - $548.97

    Thank You.

    Rakall,

It seems those different SKUs do have a difference. The S96S has a few options that can be added on. Some models come with Bluetooth or memory or both or neither. I think the different SKU mean that difference.

BTW...anyone know anything about the Half size memory? It seems like Asus abandon the idea.

Thanks for your reply, I suspected something like that to bad the vendors are not more specific in their description of the product.

You should not try to do anything else in the BIOS and quickly create a USB boot device with the DOS version of Aflash. See Guide here Any further tampering would probably make this situation even worst, if the Bios doesn't boot up/blackscreen, there would be no turning back.

    Nevermind... I guess it's fixed :)

hey no prob, i would do what d3x suggested above since i have never experienced such error

edit: nevermind, You are fine, the bios update was complete and successful. it is just that when it set everyhting to default after the update, it changed the HD settings in bios. again you are fine. If u can't use the ASUS update utility, the guide in dx3's comment above is the only way.

    GOT A BIG PROBLEM HERE:

The mic attached near the webcam continues to work even when the mic is disabled under the sound option. Now when i plug in my headphones and start typing, the mic picks up the noise and transmits to earphones(or tap on the mic on the LCD frame)

***update*** installed drivers from intel and everything back to normal. Phew :)

    hi there,my first post
bought my asus s96s from canada computers like 3 months ago is working good dual booting with ubuntu I have too that litle teee noise in winxp doesn't bother me but is very quiet under ubuntu :)....however I have 2 questions:
1.where can I get a second ASMOBILE sticker because they give me only one?
2.I read this post from the first page and saw some people are using ubuntu too does anybody made the webcam [174f:6a51 i think] work under linux?

The syntek webcam [174f:6a51] works with the latest SVN version (revision 70) of the driver available here:
    http://syntekdriver.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/syntekdriver/
But the picture is upside down (can be fixed), the colors are just wrong (RGB<->BGR whatchamacallit) and you can't set brightness, contrast, etc.

I personally don't recommend using it yet. It caused me system stability problems and it is broken by default. It is best to wait for Nicolas till he releases a new stable driver.

I would like to ask everyone about what experiences do you have with you keyboard? I have this Sunrex one with blue special keys, and I hate it because it is noisy. I want to replace it, but I don't know which one is better. I would be very grateful if it could be narrowed down which one is the best, but to determine the manufacturer the machine must be disassembled (not much, white sticker on the back of the keyb) and I don't think that too much people are eager to do that.

about the keypad don't know what to say this is my first laptop and I taught is normal the way it is ....I think I have the same keypad as you blue special keys looked under the cover but I don't see nowhere Sunrex

Yes, I have the same webcam. You know, compiling this driver from a subversion repository isn't the most easy thing to do for a newbie. You need to install the subversion client, then the kernel headers, then the build tools, checkout the svn repo, compile the kernel module, place it among the modules... yadda, yadda. It is too complicated as of now, I would gladly write a howto about this, but for now it is better to wait for a new stable release that supports your cam, and has a simpler installation. When the driver matures, I will create a package for it that will be easy to install. Please be patient.

Well, these keyboards should be available to any Intel reseller. In my case I can buy a keyboard from the company I bought the notebook, but also from several other shops who happen to be a reseller too. They usually have it listed as "VBI keyboard EN/SK/HU/CZ". The bad thing is that in most cases they don't clearly state the manufacturer, so ordering it through the e-shop is kind of a blind gamble.

Gee, I wish I could get the original keyboard I had. It was nice and quiet and had gray special keys, but I never checked the manufacturer. It eventually got replaced because after several weeks of use it had a big "bump" on the left side.

Well, close call. I still think that it is a hardware defect. When the stable version comes out I will be the first one to try it. But anyway, my Windows XP installation just died and I totally don't even care to restore it from image. It is just a piece of junk. At least I have it completely fixed on Linux, the only drawback is that I can't use any USB device or Bluetooth while on battery, but well who needs any of those while on the go.

    hey socketbind
is the suspend/sleep working on your laptop under linux(ubuntu) I tried yesterday to fix it on my laptop without luck....it goes to sleep nice but when is time to wake up I have a black screen and nothing works I need to hard reboot by pressing the power button for 5 seconds....any advice?
I just realize that if I click on the power and then click on suspend it suspends and wakes up ok and the wireless works now after I added in etc/default/acpi-support MODULES_WHITELIST= iwl4965 (the name of the wireless driver I guess)
if I setup in power management to go to sleep after lets say 5 minutes it goes to sleep but like I said before it doesn't wake up....unless I shut it down from the power button
is there a workaround to make sleep work under ubuntu ???

once every few days while i'm using this notebook, it randomly freezes up for about 7-8 seconds and then everything works normally (if i'm playing a game it will just pause and there the sound will repeat at a very fast rate.) This has happened pretty much ever since i've bought it and it hasn't bothered me that much so far, but i feel that I should try fixing this problem

wow, the exact same happened to me, so i ordered vinyls to put all over my laptop, i was wondering though, when you use ubuntu, what is the capacity of your battery, mines way too low (86%) and its unbelievably short, i get only like 1hr 15min when pushing my laptop to the limit, according to the device information my design charge should be 51.8 but im only getting 43.6, anyone know why? do i have a defective battery? theres no way i could have deteroiated it that fast, ive only had it for a couple months

PS. screw CanadaComputers, well the one in waterloo ayways, they've given me secondrate/defective product every single time, they lied about wireless 495agn card being included, and they kept my stickers!

Well I almost always used my laptop plugged in sometimes I try to see how long the battery lasts but I guess it all depends on what you're doing....anyways if I unplug the cord right now with the battery fully charged in ubuntu it shows me 1hour 40minutes(99%) so you figure it out....under windows I think is almost the same don't remember + or - 10 minutes.....now here http://socketbind.drogos.hu/asus-s96s/ is a site when they show you how to enhance battery life under ubuntu I did not tried it so if you will please let me know...

PS you said you got some vinil stickers where they asmobile or asus if yes please tell me where did you got them I want one tooo thanks

Enabling "On Demand Vertical Blank" greatly increases your battery life and it is very easy to do it. Disabling Bluetooth and Wireless LAN also has a great impact. Including these and some other tweaks I can achieve 2:30-2:40 at best with 25% brightness (no Wifi or Bluetooth). Also, in the yet to be released version of Ubuntu, there will be SATA ALPM support (thanks to the linux kernel developers), which will further enhance battery life.

I'm sorry if it some of the problems was mentioned before but I'm experiencing few annoing problems. And can't get rid of them.

1.) Mine GFX drivers crashes a lot (after hour of playing). Before driver crash fans starts cooling like mad... (Yes I have a lot of free space near vents.) This crashing I had experienced on XP32 XP64 and Vista64 too. (But Vista has great feature in reseting drivers so I stick with it). Tested few drivers from Laptop2Go and manufactured ones but each freezed difference was in time and FPS :)

2.) Intel Speed Step feature set on Enabled freezes Vista on startup (Screen with flying progressbar). Have not found a sollution yet :(

3.) Last but not least: My S96S refuses to turn off (restart is fine) or hibernate. Have to hold power button for 4s or what to really turn it off.

Guess its time to bring notebook to seller and complain or just smash with it his head?

PS: Could someone post working BIOS settings and BIOS + drivers versions?

    Thanks for an advice.

I have tried the beta BIOS, but it seems to be more like a workaround than a fix. The noise is gone, but my battery life is even worse (2:00 or less, used to be 2:30-2:40).

    Strange stuff:
The BIOS of this notebook doesn't map a separate C4 state at the software level, so I guess C3 & C4 are treated as one, it can mean both states.
v205 and earlier: Under no load the processor is mostly in C3 state. (99% of the time)
v602 beta: Under no load the processor is in C2 and C3 half the time respectively. It seems that this kind of behavior fixes the noise but reduces battery life.

(50.4%+50.2%=100.6% is kind of lol, but doesn't really matter, minor glitch in calculating it from the real numbers)

I'm kind of disheartened and convinced that manufacturers ship a bunch of "faulty" hardware. At least they try half-witted attempts like this to fix it. I have paid for a proper notebook without loud squeaking noises. At least on Linux this can be easily fixed (at the cost of no USB while on battery), but I will ask for a replacement.

hey guys, so Just randomly my touchpad "scroll" thing stopped working. and when I went to the mouse option on the key board this shows up: "Unable to connect to the Synaptics Pointing Device Driver" so basiclly I assume the driver got uninstalled or something because when I click OK and go into the mouse control panel thing it just appears like a desktop mouse control panel. as in it has the ps/2 usb mouse options, rather than a touch pad. this is annoying cause at school I always use the touchpad and I like the scroll bar on the touchpad.
do any of you have the drivers for it you could post for me or post a link to where I can dl the drivers? I cant find them anywhere and I am without my driver cd for the next month or so.

Sweet! thanks man! the touchpad works perfectly again!

but now i just realized that my Fn key doesnt work for all of its functions... for exapmple. you know when you push Fn and F5 it makes the screen brighter and brings up that blue little box on the top left screen that shows a graphic? well whatever that program was to make my Fn key work somehow got deleted or uninstalled.... I wonder what I did yesterday that screwed up my Fn and mousepad driver... i hate to bother you guys again, but do you where I can get the program for the Fn key?
