Hibernate is flawless for me on XP and Vista and I have never experienced the darkness issue : \ Maybe you should try a different driver or update the BIOS because it also updates the Video BIOS.

I use these drivers and they work perfectly:
    [XP 32 bit / 156.09]
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14464
    [Vista 32 bit / 162.18]
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=13894

Here you can find some information about fixing the brightness:
    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15079

And here is a bootable CD with the latest BIOS:

Heloo everyone, i just got my s96s and i love it, we had a some problems at first, i took it back to canada's computers (where i bought it) complaining about a noise, after 2 weeks, all they did was scratch my laptop, steal my stickers, and then say i can't return that, so im still pretty mad about that, however, i am please with my laptop, i have a tri boot between xp and vista and ubuntu (still working out issues ) i am tee noise free thanks to RMclock, and i was wondering if anyone had an extra sticker for me to put on my top cover, or know where i can get one, i know they come with atleast one, i had it, but i returned in with the laptop to get it checked out, anyways thanks for all your help so far guys

lol =D what are the chances? i got mine from there too.. the one i bought is the Canada Computer brand.. the one where they bought the barbone and sticked all the rest in. Mine came without a wireless card so i used my usb replacement, and sticking it in does take away the tee hee noise completely. as for services, i think the tech's at canada computers are not that smart, since they're dealing with multiple companies and brands, nobody can be perfect. if you're trying to buy stuff there.. expect to handle everything by yourself.

Yeah, mine did not come with a wireless one either, fact, i had to go to another city just to get the Intel 4965AGN card, not bad, yeah i had a usb one, but i felt that sooner or later, i would snap it just because, or ill get fed up with it.

Anyone looking for a great solution to the tee noise (without RMCLOCK) and a great mouse? check out the Logitech VX nano cordless laser, the receiver is soo small, i stick it in one of the back usbs and forget about it, its soo small it won't snapp off or fallout. anywaysm anyone know of where i can get a sticker?

here is what fixed the tee noise for me
    go into device manager
open up the universal serial bus controllers thing
than you see the list of like 6 "USB Root Hub"
double click each of them and go to the power Management tab
uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
i dont know why it worked but someone told me to do it and it totaly worked.

yes. this is true. V205 bios has issues(not only w/ fan but also w/ 1394net adapter detections). we just have to wait until intel releases new bios and drivers for our notebook ;)

Has anyone still had problems with the SATA /AHCI issue? I have built 3 S96 series notebooks (one S98J, one early S96S, and one current release S96S). The solution with Vista is very simple, use a desktop computer with a floppy to create the floppy disk, then copy the files to a USB thumbdrive. Insert the thumbdrive when prompted during set-up for additional drivers. The solution with xp is simple as well, but requires the purchase of the proper USB floppy drive to pull it off. Creat the flopy disk as before, but use the disk in a Targus PA905U Slimline External Floppy Drive. It will be recognized by S96 series laptops as the "A" Drive, just plug it in before running F6 in xp set-up. I found one on eBay for $12. Both require reloading your hard drive to do it properly. I am not sure of any Hard Drive performance improvement, but Intel Turbo Memory will not work or be recognized unless the AHCI is enabled. Hope this helps somebody.

Yep i've tested a lot of drivers. I believe this is drivers too. On xp 2 times had an error during playing that nvidia driver stopped to work properly and restart is needed. But strange is that Uneal tournament 3 and unreal tournament 2004, hellgate london and few other games are working properly. So this is strange. I think that this is the drivers or graphic card compatibility problems:/ But i still dunno what to do :(

this laptop creates a LOT of heat when playing games, crashing happened to me too but that was during the time when i had my laptop on top of my blankets, where ventilation was not sufficient. However it stopped happening to me after i moved my laptop to a cooler location. But keep this in mind, my friend has a asus G1, which costs over 2000$, he said his laptop crashes frequently during gaming too. I guess this is why people said laptops are not for gaming.

Yep i think that it could be heat problem. I know few ppl who have asus, toshiba laps with almost the same config as my s96s. They payed a lot of money for this laps. Problems occures on some of this machines too. This is strange. Some of games even the older ones crash : Fear for example. But in some like ut3 or hellgate london this problem doesnt occure. Kinda strange:/ I think the problem is a mix of heat/compatibility of mobile cards and drivers. I think im gonna buy a pc for gaming. And lap will be for work only:/

i am using vista 32 buisiness edition . i am using 163.69 drivers and i have never experienced such problems.(iplay cs:source and cod4, madden 08)
    1. this is is a stupid suggestion but make sure u use max performance b4 starting a game
    2. U guys should put arctic silver on both cpu and gpu. I did it. It is so easy, if u guys have done it for desktops, it is a piece of cake. Arct silver reduced my gpu by 5deg celcuis on load.

I was planning on putting Vista on my Z96J. Since the S96J is fairly similar, I thought I would post in this thread.

Does anyone have a list of all the drivers I need to get Vista working well on my laptop? I tried Vista when it first came out and many of the drivers didn't work. None of the function buttons worked or the Power2Gear buttons near the top. Is that all fixed now?

using the asus update utility is the easiest way to do it.
    1. down the new bios
    2. run the update utility and locate the newly downloaded bios and restart after it is done.

If u don't wanna use the asus update utility, please refer to earlier posts of SOCKETBIND. ;)

    here it goes...... :D ;)

HERE IS THE TUTORIAL FOR APPLYING ARCTIC SILVER ON ASUS S96S NOTEBOOK
(I take no responsibility, so do it at your own risk). I am not sure if it voids warranty when you do this procedure.Suggestions and corrections welcome. This is how i do it and it works for me. This is my second time using Arctic silver so you will see the old compound left overs.

Things you need---- screwdriver (small star head), rubbing alcohol, a cotton swab, Arctic silver, plastic bag or an old credit card.

    1. Turn your notebook over locate the screws. Follow the arrow and apply some pressure to remove cover (see pic 1)
    2. Now you have access to memory, gpu, and cpu. (See Pic 2) This is a great chance to clean your notebook with pressured air.

    3. Unplug the fan plug!(see pic 3). Locate the screws for the removal of cpu and gpu heat sink. (see pic 4)

    4. Now that you have unscrewed the screws the heat sink should be loose. This is very tricky step, and be very careful!. To remove the whole heatsink unit, first lift it up lightly, and the start pulling it towards you until the whole unit clears the board. Turn the heatsink over and put it on a table.

    5. Leave the GPU memory thermal pads alone and don’t remove it!. When I first opened my notebook, I noticed that the CPU core had a thermal pad and GPU core didn’t. So, carefully take or wipe away the thermal pad of the CPU. Use rubbing alcohol for moisture and wipe the surface of GPU and CPU core clean! And let it dry for a moment. (See Pic 5)

    6. While the heatsink is drying(doesn’t take that long), carefully clean the core of both GPU and CPU core(it looks shiny, hard to miss) using the swab w/ rubbing alcohol. (See pic 8 thru 12)

7.NOW HERE IS HOW YOU APPLY AS5 ON THE CORES OF GPU AND CPU. Use about half a grain of rice of AS5 and place it on the cores. You can use an old credit card or put your finger in a plastic bag and spread the compound evenly. If you use your plastic bag finger, it will look blotchy as it does in my pic, but it is ok as long as you don’t have too much and it will even out when you place the heatsink on it. Be carefully not to put it on the other parts of cpu or gpu. The As5 should only go on the shiny core. (see pic 13-18)

    8. Some people like to apply some AS5 on heatsink(of the cores) but I don’t recommend it. Remember, too much AS5 will not help. Slide the heatsink into its place and screw everything tightly. Do not forget to plug in your heatsink fan plug back in its slot!!.

    9. Slide the cover back on, screw it in, and remember to dispose the waste properly. AS5 takes time to work, I think about 20hrs. AS5 will tremendously help with core overheating problems.

I thought that too in the begining. But it is indeed your cpu or other motherboard component. It is not your Hard drive sorry. :( There are so many threads on Tee noise in the forum> check out dell,HP and you will find out that it is related to CPU and the c4 sleep state. Again it has nothing to do with the hard drive!! so don't waste your time on replacing HD

c4 is a sleep state where the cpu powers down to save power. However, when going into this "sleep" state, a component in the motherboard (not sure which one) makes this tee noise coz of some frequency interference.
You can use a program called rmclock
    RightMark CPU Clock Utility
( http://cpu.rightmark.org/download.shtml) to solve the problem. there is a option to disable the c4 state and by doing this your laptop will not produce any whinny tee noise. However, disabling c4 takes away about 15min of your battery life. You can try the settings on Post#283 of this thread, those settings reduces the noise significantly without disabling c4 state.
    Good luck
